PK Subban Wins the 2013 Norris Memorial Trophy

P.K. Subban has been announced as the winner of the 2013 James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded to the top defenseman of the 2013 season as determined by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.

While Subban was quick to credit his teammates for his first Norris win, there can be no doubt that it was dedication and perseverance that really paid off for the young defenseman during a season that opened with him on the sidelines as he negotiated a contract with the Montreal Canadiens. When he finally did hit the ice after missing the first six games of the season, P.K. came out flying, eventually notching 11 goals and 38 points in 42 games, finishing up with a plus-minus rating of plus 12 – the best among Habs’ defensemen, and second best on the team overall.

Congratulations to P.K. on his big – and well-deserved – Norris Trophy win! With the way his game continued to evolve over the 2012-2013 season, it’s safe to say that Habs fans will have something special to look forward to again next season!

P.K. Subban for the Norris Trophy?

After a rocky start to the season that saw him hold out for a better contract, missing out on the first six games of the season, P.K. Subban proved his value over and over again, ending up with the league scoring title among defenseman with 38 points, including 11 goals – 7 of them on the much improved Habs’ powerplay.

Now, with the end of the regular season having come and gone, Subban sees his Montreal Canadiens heading into the playoffs as the second seed in the Eastern Conference, having played a major role in helping the team to achieve that honour.

So, with all of that behind us, there are two main questions that remain to be answered: how will Subban perform in the playoffs, and will he win the 2013 Norris Trophy? I’ve venture to answer with “splendidly” and “yes,” respectively, but both remain to be seen. While he does have a strong record of showing up as a star in the playoffs (remember that tying goal in game seven against Boston last year?), he’s got some stiff competition when it comes to the Norris Trophy.

However things turn out, we wish P.K. and the Habs the very best when they open the post-season against the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night!

PK Scores First of the Season

While it may have come in a losing effort to the f*@king Boston Bruins, P.K. Subban did net a nice powerplay goal at the Bell Centre last night – his first of the season, giving him a total of three points.

With his shot better-targeted and his play just a bit more subdued than in times past, it looks like the Subbanator could soon find himself with a more prominent position on the Habs’ powerplay.

Subban Signs Two Year Deal with Habs

Finally, the wait is over – the Montreal Canadiens have signed P.K. Subban to a two-year contract, allowing our minute-eating, body-crushing defenseman to rejoin his teammates in hopes of continuing their early success this season.

While P.K. was reportedly holding out for a big pay day (according to the press, who rarely have such things right, mind you), it seems that he was happy, in the end, to take a so-called “bridge contract” of two years and $5.75 million from the Habs in hopes of establishing a big pay day when he becomes a UFA after that term.

Whatever the financial details, Habs fans are breathing a collective sigh of relief. Whether or not PK will be in the lineup against the Jets in Montreal tonight remains to be seen, but you have to think that Michel Therrian will be anxious to add another dependable defenseman to his mix, especially given the stellar play of Andrei Markov.

Hockey’s Back – Without P.K.

I have mixed feelings on the return of the NHL, but not nearly as mixed as those of P.K. Subban, I would bet. With training camp underway and the shortened 48-game season set to commence on Saturday, he remains home without a contract.

Rumours have been swirling as to offers that have crossed the table and the current positions of Habs general manager Marc Bergevin and Subban’s agent Don Meehan, but obviously nothing is getting done. It makes you wonder if everyone’s favorite powerhouse defenceman will be wearing the bleu, blanc, et rouge this season.

Habs Offer Subban 2 Years, $5.5 Million

The Montreal Canadiens have reportedly offered P.K. Subban, a restricted free agent this summer, a two-year contract worth a total of $5.5 million ($2.75 million per season). While this is only part of an ongoing negotiation process, the offer is surprisingly low from the point of view of some pundits.

While Subban’s goal output wasn’t up to par last season, he did finish at plus-9 on a minus team and brings a unique game that combines flair and talent with a gritty game, something every team needs to succeed in the NHL. Considering the recent mammoth contracts being handed out around the league, it seems certain that Subban could command $5 million per year on an open market but whether this low offer by the Canadiens inspires an offer sheet from another team is yet to be seen.

Malcolm Subban Drafted by Bruins

Malcolm Subban dons his Bruins gear. Yuck!

In a strange twist of fate, the Boston Bruins elected to draft young goaltending prospect Malcolm Subban, brother of P.K., with their first round pick in the NHL Entry Draft yesterday.

With Tim Thomas on the way out, there seems a decent chance that the young goalie will get to see NHL action in this coming season, heightening what is already a tense rivalry between the Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens as the talented brothers face off against one another.

Here’s hoping P.K.’s first goal of the season is a blast from the point that sneaks through his younger brother’s five-hole when the Habs face off against the Bruins in 2012-2013!

Subban Injured at World Championship

P.K. Subban left Sunday’s World Championship pre-tourny game between Canada and Switzerland after suffering what’s being called a lower body injury after a collision with Swiss defenceman Luca Sbisa during the first period.

Preliminary reports indicate that the injury is not related to the back problems reportedly suffered by P.K. during his season with the Canadiens. The injury is being called “not serious” and he is expected to be back in Canada’s lineup before long.

Canada ended up winning the goal 2-1 in a shootout.

PK Gets His Fifth Goal in a Wacky Game

It was a wild and wacky game against the Minnosota Wild at the Bell Centre tonight, a game that saw gaffs like Alexei Emelin laying a monster hit on teammate Erik Cole and the Wild’s Devin Setoguchi falling down during a crucial shootout attempt, but also a game that saw P.K. Subban net his fifth goal of the season on a wicked one-timer from Tomas Kaberle. In the end Montreal took the game 5-4 in the shootout after blowing a 4-1 lead in the final three minutes of the third period.

The Habs play host to the quickly fading Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
