A new campaign from the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has sparked controversy among some riders. The public service campaign, called "Think.Ride." is a series of short videos that encourage proper safety gear and safe, responsible riding practices, and discourages impaired riding and excessive exhaust sound. Another video tells car and truck drivers to watch out for motorcyclists on the road.

The video spots feature Perry King, actor and member of the AMA Board of Directors. This example encourages drivers to watch out for motorcyclists...

For the most part this campaign has been well received by the riding public.

However, some bikers have taken offense at AMA's efforts to curb excessive noise. Last year loud pipes were identified as one of the biggest threats to the motorcycle community by AMA's board.

5th Annual Ride for Rachel House

The 5th Annual Ride for Rachel House will be on Saturday June 26, 2010 with Same Day Rider Registration 9:00 am at the Ride Start Location 320 NE Tudor Rd. (across from LS North H.S.) in the Lee's Summit Rachel House parking lot.

The $25 Rider donation will all go to financially support the Rachel House Pregnancy Resource Centers in Blue Springs, The Northland and Lee's Summit. Thanks to our sponsors who provide each with an event T-shirt, ride patch, food, cold drinks, door prizes and live music. Riders will leave at 10:00 am for a 100 mile route on Missouri country roadways with a scheduled break stop mid-route, then returning to the Lee's Summit Rachel House Office parking lot for activities, lunch and live music.

Reynard Raceway

Formerly Sooner State Motocross Park.

Reynard Raceway consists of approximately 161 rolling acres with a 4,000 square-foot lodge. There are two natural terrain motocross tracks- each two miles long featuring huge uphills/downhills, camber corners, berms, whoops, double jumps and table tops, plus an eight-mile cross-country track/trail. Centrally located two-story scoring tower with restroom and garage downstairs, air-conditioned/heated restroom facilities including showers, 20 RV hookups and six stocked ponds.

Reynard Raceway is located at 9743 South Hwy 177 near Wellston, Oklahoma. It is 2.3 miles south of Route 66 and 3 miles from Turner Turnpike(I-44). It is about a 20 minute drive to Reynard Raceway from Oklahoma City.

BMW Unleashes Superbike on Music Videos

The S1000RR even makes an appearance in the latest product placement extravaganza from the Black Eyed Peas- Imma Be Rocking that Body.

But the good news is this: it may be worth the hype!

Our first chance to ride the new Beemer was only a very short stint around town. Unfortunately not nearly enough time or road to really find out what this bike can do. The 14th Annual Ride for the Child is Saturday, April 17, 2010. All vehicles are invited to take part in this annual poker run to benefit Prevent Child Abuse Pickens County. Registration is from 10 - 12 PM at BI-LO on Hwy. 123 in Easley, South Carolina. The cost is $25 per vehicle and includes one poker hand. Extra hands are $10. CASH prizes will be awarded! Megan Harmon, a 21 year old college student at UAH and an avid motorcyclist, lost her left leg, just above the knee, in a tragic motorcycle accident in March of '09. She has bounced back beautifully, but her insurance has run out and her quality of life would be much improved if she could receive an upgraded knee joint for her prosthetic leg. She has a basic prosthetic, which her insurance provided, but has ambitions to be as athletic as she was prior to the accident and to be able to ride a motorcycle again. Won't you please help us give this fine young lady a chance at a better life and at the same time spend a day of riding and entertainment with your friends? All money raised will go directly to Megan's prosthetic provider.

Arenacross: Still Great Fun

This weekend I watched some dirt track action for the first time in several years. It was the Tulsa stop for the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series and the venue was the BOK Center.

We cheered on the local boys- like Robbie Reynard and Corey Green- but in the end it was Tyler Bowers taking the top spot on the podium for the main event.

It was a great event and all the riders put on one hell of a show.

Bike Sales Looking Up

Sales Slowly Rebounding

The latest trade rags are reporting that motorcycle and ATV sales are slowly recovering from their monumental slump. Sales of new bikes in November 2009 were down about 13% compared to the previous year. If that doesn't exactly sound like great news consider the number was about 35% just a few months previous. Regionally the west is faring the worst with an average slump in sales closer to 20%. By contrast, dealers in the northeast report sales are off less than 2%.

This downturn in the sales of new units has had an interesting effect on the market in general. Some buyers are more apt to consider a less costly pre-owned purchase. Dealers turned up the volume on their used inventory to meet the demands of price-conscience shoppers. Powersports auction houses are popping up across the country and finding new clientele in dealers who normally only worked their trade-ins.
