Argentina Movie wins Oscar for best Foreign Languaje Film

As an Argentine, I am proud to make this post, the Argentine film El Secreto de sus Ojos (The Secret in their eyes) won an Oscar last night. The film won the Oscar for the Best Foregin Language film.
This is the Trailer of the film, it is a really good film, interesting and full of suspence.

Gualeguaychu Carnival 2010

The Gualeguaychu Carnival is the most important carnival in Argentina. It begins the first´s days of January and finishes the last days of February, every weekend the streets of the City Corsodrome fills with bright colours, the joy of people, rhythms that make the body vibrate and the carnival parades that give a great show to the people present in the corsodrome.

There are five traditional parades from Gualeguaychú: Mary Mary, O'Bahía, Kamarr, Papelitos and Ara Yevi, but three are competing in each unearthing of King Momo, Saturday to Saturday between January and February, as thousands of expectant eyes which seeking to break with the everyday in search of freedom and fun. The champion will have the privilege of a comeback the following year to defend against the other two groups place and deserved recognition.

More than one night ... more than an event than a festival ... ... more than a rite ... An indescribable experience that can only be understand by anyone who has experienced the Carnival of the Country.

The Carnival is a great show to see and to have a nice weekend in the city of Gualeguaychu, a city that is located in the Entre Rios province, at a distance of 233km from Buenos Aires.

Salta, la linda

Salta is one of the most beautifull places in Argentina, with great and spectacular landscapes, it is a province that should be visited if you are planing to travel to Argentina.
Among the places you can visit in Salta, you can find Calafate, the city of Salta, a city that was founded in 1582 and it is drawn by colonial houses, narrow streets and pavements, and the brownish green of the surrounding hills, the Calchaquies valleys, the Puna, Valle de Lerma and the route of wine, where you can visit the vineyards.

This is my second post about Salta, its such a beautiful province that I wanted to share with you some more beautifull pictures and a great video of Salta.

Great monuments of Buenos Aires: Torre de los Ingleses

Torre de los Ingleses(English Tower) is a monument located in Retiro neigbourhood in Buenos Aires. It is situated in the Fuerza Aerea Argentina plaza.
The Torre de los Ingleses was built by british residents in Argentina to commemorate the centenary of the May Revolution that lead to the independence of Argentina.
The construction was conducted by the Hopkins and Gardom architects and almost all the materials used for construction were brought from England. The same happened with the technical personnel responsible for construction.
The Torre de los Ingleses is a Palladian style tower, as the trend in the late sixteenth century in Britain, is located on a platform with four access stairs. Over the main entrance facing the west, and on other sides of the building, where there is an alternate triglyphs frieze and metopes decorated with suns and different emblems of the British Empire. Among others, you can recognize the flower of the Thistle, the Rose of the House of Tudor, the Red Dragon of Wales and the Shamrock of Ireland.
The height of the tower is 75.50 m and has eight floors. At 35 m there is a clock, which has four quadrants of 44 cm diameter each of which was conducted in English opaline. On the quadrants are five bronze bells tolling in which the quarter hours mimics that of Westminster Abbey. The bell weighs about seven tons.
The tower is surmounted by an octagonal dome covered with copper plates and steel trusses on top of which rotates a vane that represents a three-masted frigate of the Elizabethan era. The chimes that mark the quarter hours weighing about 3 tons, and mimics, as the Westminster Abbey.
On the entrance door are the arms of Argentina and Great Britain, and a phrase that says "the great people of Argentina, the British residents, health, May 25, 1810-1910.
During the war with Great Britain in the 80s, the name of the tower was changed to Monumental Tower, but everybody in Buenos Aires still calls the tower Torre de los Ingleses.
It is nice walk to visit the tower and the square where it is located.

In the jungle of Misiones are the ruins of San Ignacio Miní, the traces of presence of religious Jesuits during the Spanish occupation in the early seventeenth century.

The ruins of San Ignacio Miní were declared World Heritage Site in 1984 and are currently the best-preserved ruins in Argentina. The ruins of San Ignacio Miní are composed of remnants of the village and the church that the Jesuits built to evangelize the Guarani natives who inhabited the area.

Expelled the Jesuits in 1767, San Ignacio Miní survived until it was destroyed, as other villages, during the border war of 1817. Despite this, a group under the command of Guaraní Chief Cristaldo returned to settle in the place. This repopulation was unsuccessful because the Paraguayan troops ravaged villages in Paraná in 1821.

The film "The Mission" starred by Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons is about the war that the Jesuits and Guarani Indians fought against the Bandeirantes, the service of the Portuguese empire, that destroyed the mission.

The urban plant of the mission was organized around the square and was chaired by the group that formed the largest town and the temple, with sacristy and baptistery, on one of those sides were located the parent's home, the school, dining hall, the courtyard of the workshops and warehouses, and in the other, the cemetery and the garden.

Nowadays the ruins are one of the most important tourist attractions of Misiones province.

Plaza Dorrego, Tango, art and antiques

Plaza Dorrego is located in the heart of San Telmo neighborhood in Buenos Aires. It
is a one of the major tours of Buenos Aires.
Most of the tourist that visit Buenos Aires go to Plaza Dorrego, as it is one of the most traditional tours, but also it is a place visited by locals, it is nice to have a good coffee in the Plaza and enjoy the street performers who are on the sidewalks, as living statues, tango dancers and musicians. All around the Plaza are cafes, bars and pubs with tables on the plaza, and also antiques and crafts shops.
There are plenty of shows by musicians and street dance, including tango shows. On Sundays the Feria de San Telmo takes place, during which the square and surrounding streets are occupied artisans that expose their works and also antiques. The tourists and locals contribute to give Plaza Dorrego a very special physiognomy.
The surrounding buildings are characteristic of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century no more than three floors, which houses cafes, restaurants and pubs and also churches like the Jesuit Church Nuestra Señora de Bethlem, the Parroquia de San Pedro Telmo, and the Antonio Ballve Prison Museum, which still houses the Chapel of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, built in 1734.
But also a main attraction of Plaza Dorrego and San Telmo are antique shops near the Plaza where you can visit the goldsmiths, steaks and plastics artists workshops.

Whale Vigil in Peninsula Valdes, Chubut

Every year at this time of the year the Southern right whales arrive to the coast of Chubut in the south of Argentina.
The Peninsula Valdes is the place where you can see the arrival of the whales. Peninsula Valdes is an important nature reserve located in the Chubut province. The coastline of the Valdes peninsula is inhabited by sea lions, elephant seals and fur seals. The places to find the Southern right whales are Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José, where they stay for mating and giving birth between May and December.
The Valdes Peninsula was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999 because of the wildlife diversity of its coasts.

The Chubut Government will transmit live this amazing experience for everyone, if you like nature you can see live the arrival of the whales to the Chubut shore where they return every year for their mating season.

Buenos Aires China town has a new Entry Arc

Argentina, like all countries of the world with a strong Chinese community, hasfinished the construction an entrance arch to the chinese neighbourhood. The government of China decided to pay around half a million dollars to install an arch of stone and cement that is eleven meters high and has the width of the Arribeños street, at the beginning of Argentina’s China town, in the neighbourhood of Belgrano.

The Chinese district of Buenos Aires is located in the Belgrano neighbourhood, located 2 blocks from Libertador Avenue and seven from Av Cabildo Avenue, near Barrancas de Belgrano and very close to the Belgrano railway Station.

Like in many important world cities where the Chinese community is located, China town has become an attraction for most of the people.

The construction of the arc will give China town a more important relevance for tourism and commerce.

I had already written an article about the Perito Moreno Glacier, but the other day I found these great videos an Youtube which are simply marvellous.
They show the Perito Moreno Glacier and the rupture of the glacier, one of the great natural wonders on earth.
The Perito Moreno Glacier is an absolute must if you visit Argentina. I would say that of all the natural wonders that exist in the country, the Perito Moreno is one of the most incredible and amazing.
The rupture of the glacier happens every four years, although in these last few years this has been brought down to every two years. If you have seen the rupture you can consider yourself a privileged person.

Great Buildings of Buenos Aires: Planetarium "Galileo Galilei"

When I was a kid I loved visiting the Planetarium, a sort of astronomy museum with meteorites and space images all over the place. Whilst you were sitting in the Planetarium you could see the images of the solar system shown on the projectors which made you feel as if you were in space.

The Planetarium is called Galileo Galilei and is located in Palermo, in the Tres de Febrero park in Buenos Aires.

I always loved the building where the Planetarium was built, its construction having been started in 1962 under the direction of architect Enrique Jan and inaugurated in 1966. The Planetarium is a kind of round building with five floors, six staircases and one 20 meter diameter room with 360 seats. The inside of the 20 mtr semispherical dome is covered with reflective aluminium.
The Planetarium itself is located in the center of the building, has over 100 projectors and is approximately five meters high with a weight of 2,5 tons. The cylindrical framework has independent projectors for the Moon, the Sun and all visible planets, i.e Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn and also has two spheres in the extremes that can project almost 9.000 stars, constellations and nebulas.
In the museum there are two pieces of lunar rock that were brought back to Earth by the Apollo XI mission and given to the Planetarium by Richard Nixon. You can also find meteorites that fell on Argentine territory.
If you like astronomy and architecture the Planetarium is a great place to visit.

I sometimes find Buenos Aires architecture hypnotic, Buenos Aires is a cosmopolitan city, full of life and places to go, but its architecture is fantastic, and some of the greatest buildings in Buenos Aires are nowadays important hotels.

Buenos Aires is a city that has a hotel infrastructure that is in constant growth. Among the many hotels that exist in Buenos Aires, there are some who draw attention for its beautiful buildings and make a worthwhile article to highlight these qualities.

One of these is the Alvear Palace Hotel, located in the neighborhood of Recoleta is the largest 5 star hotel in Buenos Aires, the hotel was opened in 1932, after nearly ten years of design and construction and since 2003 it is an Architectural Heritage and History of the City of Buenos Aires.

Another of the important and oldest hotels in the city of Buenos Aires is the Claridge Hotel, a 5 star hotel located in the midst of the business, banking and entertainment district. A few steps away from the most outstanding points of interest in the city.

Buenos Aires Botanical Garden

The Buenos Aires Botanical Garden is located in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. The garden, which was declared a national monument in 1996, has a total area of 69,772 m2, and holds around 5,500 species of plants, trees and shrubs, as well as a number of sculptures, monuments and 5 winter-houses.
Designed by French-born Argentine architect and landscape designer Carlos Thays, the garden was inaugurated on September 7, 1898. Thays and his family lived in an English style mansion, located within the gardens, between 1892 and 1898, when he served as director of parks and walks in the city. The mansion, built in 1881, is currently the main building of the complex.

There are three main styles of landscape gardening in the Botanical Gardan: the symmetric, mixed and the picturesque, recreated in the Roman, the French and the Asian gardens.
It also has areas where the plants are ranked according to their origin, from Asia thera are copiesof Ginkgo biloba, from Oceania, Acacias, Eucalyptus and Casuarina, from Europe, oak, elm and hazelnut, and Africa, ferns, palms, and Gomera. Also from the United States sequoias, but above all, it has a special emphasis on the Argentine flora. There are also sectors where plant specimens are arranged systematically according to taxonomic classification.
There is a Botany Library with one thousand books and ten thousand publications from around the world, freely available for visitors.
The place has 33 works of art, sculptures, busts and monuments.
Another attraction of the Botanical Garden are its five greenhouses. As pointed out more greenhouse, art nouveau style, which was awarded at the Paris Exhibition of 1899, is 35 m long and 8 wide, by design, is considered to be the only of its kind that is kept in the world.

Great Monuments of Argentina: National Historic Monument to the Flag

The National Historic Monument to the Flag (Monumento Historico Nacional a la Bandera) is a symbol monument of the city of Rosario. It is located in the Parque Nacional a la Bandera, in the place where General Manuel Belgrano rose the flag for the first time on February 27, 1812, on the Paraná river. The monument was made to commemorate the birth of the Argentine insignia and the monument´s name is reffered to the Flag.
Architects Ángel Guido and Alejandro Bustillo were the designers of the monument, and sculptors Bigatti and Jose Alfredo Fioravanti worked in the sculptures of the monument. Some time later artists Eduardo Barnes and Pedro Cresta added some of their works to the monument.

The monument has a tower 70 m high with a lookout at the top, a crypt in memory of General Manuel Belgrano, a Civic yard and a Temple vestibule. In the basement of the latter is the Honor Hall of Flags of American countries.

During the night the lights makes the effect of reflecting the Argentine flag.

Great Buildings of Buenos Aires: Biblioteca Nacional

In Buenos Aires you can find lots of things to do and visit, but one thing I really like about Buenos Aires is its architecture. There are lots of great buildings in Buenos Aires that were designed by great architects and the Biblioteca Nacional is one of them.

The Biblioteca Nacional (National Library of Argentina) is the largest library in the country. It is currently located in the neighborhood of Recoleta, being inaugurated in 1810 in a building located in the Manzana de las Luces.

It is an amazing building, buit and designed by the Architect Clorindo Testa, it has a revolutionary design for its time, it was constructed in the 70´s, and one of its main carasteristics is that the ground level was left wide open showing only the park and the reading room as a lookout on the port and the Río de la Plata.

The building has three underground reservoirs, two of them for books, which are deposits for three million books, and one to keep journals and diaries, with a capacity of five hundred thousand copies. In addition, the building currently operates the National School of Librarians, founded in 1956.

I like to post about this buildings beacause Buenos Aires has a very rich history in Architecture and this is one of the attractions of the city.

Amazing Aconcagua

Among the many natural beauties that Argentina has and which are visited by thousands of tourists each year is the Cerro Aconcagua.

The Cerro Aconcagua is the highest peak in Argentina and the highest in America and the world outside Asia. The mountain rises to 6962 meters in height and is located in the Province of Mendoza in west-central Argentina, and is part of the Andes. North and east it borders the Valle de las Vacas and west and south by the lower Valley of Horcones . It is truly an amazing and wonderful place, several glaciers traverse its slopes, the most important being the northeast or Polish Glacier and the eastern or English. The Cerro Aconcagua is located within the Aconcagua Provincial Park and is a very popular among mountain climbers from around the world, with an entry from 6000 to 7000 visitors per season, which runs between December and March. Thousands of fans visit the Aconcagua mountain each year, according to experts the north face of Aconcagua is technically simple, and you can climb through the "normal way" in the northwest, which is not necessary to use technical climbing . The second track is much more risky, that it is the Polish Glacier. This approaches the mountain through the Vacas valley, ascends to the base of the Glacier and crosses the normal to the final climb to the summit. The routes from the ridge to the south and southwest are the toughest, considering the South as the most difficult.

Is only to say that the Aconcagua is a great natural wonders of Argentina and that is that really worth a visit.

Mar Chiquita, an inland sea in the middle of Argentina

Mar Chiquita is a large saltwater lagoon that is located in the province of Cordoba in central Argentina. One of the biggest lake area of Argentina and one of the largest salt lakes in the planet. Its surface is about 6000km2.

It is a place with a great diversity of flora and Fauna, it was formed by a geological fault that was formed during the Andean folding, which was at that time the bed of a marine gulf, because of this the area has abundance of sodium sulfate that salt its waters.

The Lagoon of Mar Chiquita seems a true inland sea, the winds cause high waves, it has very interesting landscapes and its climate is excellent, but it is a tourist area little known and exploited, which also gives a special attraction. The western and northern coasts are practically uninhabited and unspoiled natural landscapes that present have difficult access, but are unique places to visit if you can. In these wild animals abound. On the south coast is where the populations where tourism is more developed, like in Miramar, Balnearia, Marull, and Altos de Chipión. On the west coast is the old village of Morteros that was a fort in the seventeenth century.

Mar Chiquita lagoon is not one of the most famous tourist destinations in Argentina, but it's worth visiting.

Teatro Colon, one of Buenos Aires greatest buildings

The Teatro Colon is one of the most important opera houses in the world. Owner of an acoustic reference, it´s an absolute must for lovers of music, the Colon theatre has always been a theater for the public and revered by the greatest artists.

Successive architects who were in charge of the impressive work (Francesco Tamburini, Vittorio Meano and Jules Dormal) reconciled different design styles so diverse as the Greek prevailing abroad, the Italian Renaissance, good distribution and the strength characteristic of the German architecture and the grace and variety of ornamentation Bizarri associated with French architecture, "to form an admirable example of the style" eclectic "in the nineteenth century.

The building occupies 8200 square meters and total area of 58,000 m² on the site bounded by the streets Tucumán, Liberty, the pasaje Arturo Toscanini and Cerrito street (Avenida Nueve de Julio) from where it is an excellent perspective of the theater.

With capacity for 2487 spectators, divided into seven levels, the horseshoe-shaped chamber in the Italian is 32 meters in diameter, 75 deep and 28 high in an atmosphere of eclectic style, combining Frenchneo renaissance and Italian Baroque, the design of the theater presents a rich decorated in gold and scarlet.

The stage is 35 meters deep by 34 wide and mouth scene is one of the largest theaters in a horseshoe-shaped. Around the room, the large foyer (Foyer), the Golden Room, the Hall of Bustos, the White Room and the Museum which houses the costumes used by some of the celebrities who passed through the stage.

If you visit Buenos Aires its one of the places you must visit, although its beeing under reparation since two years ago you can visit some parts of the theatre.

El Obelisco, a Symbol of Buenos Aires

El Obelisco is a National Historic Monument icon of the city of Buenos Aires. Located in the Plaza de la Republica, at the intersection of Corrientes Avenue and 9 de Julio Avenue, was built to conmemorate the fourth centennial of the first foundation of the city.

It was designed by architect Alberto Prebisch (one of the main architects of the Argentine modernism ), at the request of the Mayor of the city Mariano de Vedia y Mitre.

El Obelisco was built by the German company Siemens GEOPA-Bauunion - Grün & Bilfinger, which completed its work in a record time of 31 days, for which employed 157 workers. The work began on March 20, 1936 and was inaugurated on May 23 of that year.
