About 10 to 15 years ago, I was listening to an interview with singer-songwriter Steve Earle.

His words really hit me at the time – he was saying something about coming to terms with what you are and to stop pretending to be something you are not, even if it means things will get tough.

As I listened, I couldn’t help but think about my own life. I had always played it safe and followed the same old routine day after day, and I found myself in a very unfulfilling place. But after hearing Steve’s message, I realized that I needed to start pursuing the things I truly wanted to be pursuing the way I wanted to pursue them.

I haven’t been perfect in that pursuit over the past 10 years but I keep going.

I’m glad I wrote this song as a reminder to my future self and to anyone else feeling the same way.

Is there something you’ve always dreamed of doing since you were a kid, but then life got in the way?

Maybe you’re thinking “it’s way too late to start” or “I’m just too old” or “I don’t have the time anymore.”

Well, I’m hoping my story about why I started creating music can help you realize that you are never too old to start.

I’m Corey, and if you haven’t been here before, I write songs, perform, sing, play guitar – all that stuff.

Here’s the kicker: I didn’t start doing ANY of it until I was in my 30s.

Completely ignored that side of me for ALL of my 20s. But now? I’ve released a couple albums and played over 100 shows – and this is after never thinking I had a musical bone in my body outside of just being a fan.

How It All Started

Back in 2008, in my mid-30s, I ran a music blog and podcast called The Melting Pot. I’d get tons of CDs in the mail from artists hoping to get played on the show.

Some stuff was great – like this guy Chris Knight who I still love today (check him out, he’s awesome). But let’s be honest – a lot of it wasn’t good. Some was almost terrible.

I started getting curious. Looking at these artists’ social media (back when MySpace was still hanging on), I saw they had followings despite their music being… well, not great.

I thought to myself, “Well, shit, I can do way better than that!”

From Metal Head to Acoustic Guy

See, I used to be a metal guy. Sold all my gear in college because drinking money seemed more important (ah, youth).

I figured if I couldn’t scream like Rob Halford or shred like Yngwie Malmsteen, what was the point?

Obviously, that was complete BS. The ’90s showed us that deeper voices and acoustic guitars can rock just as hard.

Taking the Leap

It started with playing guitar around campfires. Friends who’d known me forever were like, “Wow, where’d you learn to do that? I didn’t know you could sing!”

In 2008, I wrote my first song, “Change the World.” People actually liked it. So I kept going – writing more songs, booking shows, figuring it out as I went.

Never Too Old to Start

Sure, some friends thought I was nuts at first. I quit bowling league and softball to focus on music.

But a couple years later? I was playing festivals. Those same skeptical friends were saying, “Wow, you were actually serious about this!”

Here’s what blows people’s minds: I did all this while raising three young kids, staying married, and working a full-time job.

Was it easy? Nope.
Did it burn me out sometimes? You bet.
Was it worth it? Absolutely.

That’s why I called my first album “Never Too Late” – because it’s true.

What’s Your Dream?

So what’s your “music”? Maybe it’s actually writing a book or starting a business.

Whatever it is, I want to hear about it in the comments below. Because you’re never too old to start something new.

But eventually, as you’ll see, music became more than a spectator sport.

Never Too Old In My 30s

It wasn’t until my late 30s that I discovered my own musical talents – singing, playing guitar, and writing songs.

This realization set me on an incredible journey where I released two albums and performed over a hundred shows, all while starting from scratch. It was a whirlwind experience, transitioning from a passionate fan to someone on the other side of the stage.

Life, as it often does, got in the way. Juggling a family and a budding music career became overwhelming, and burnout hit me hard in my mid-40s.

I made the difficult decision to put my music aside for a while.

Still, Never Too Old At Age 52

Now, here I am at 52, and I’ve realized something important: it’s time to stop making excuses and chase those dreams again! I have a collection of unfinished songs that deserve to be heard, and I’m ready to pour my heart into creating a new album.

This channel is my way of bringing you along on my musical adventure.

I’ll be sharing my process and insights on various aspects of music:

• Songwriting: Unveiling the creative process behind crafting songs.
• Music Production: I’ll be honest, this is my Achilles’ heel, but I’m determined to improve and share my journey.
• Music Discovery: Get ready for some fantastic music recommendations as I share new artists and bands that I’m excited about.
• The Music Business: Having a marketing background, I’ll share insights into the business side of music.
• Life Lessons: I’ll be reflecting on the valuable lessons I’ve learned, especially about pursuing passions later in life.

The Mission

My goal is to inspire anyone who believes you’re “never too old” to go after what they love.

If a self-proclaimed mediocre, lazy, and late-blooming musician like me can do it, so can you!

So after years of playing it with a full band, and feeling the jolt of energy having a rhythm section gave to the song, I knew I had to add them.

Also, the theme and the release of this song also correlated perfectly with the new year. This song helps turn the page on a few challenging years and sets a tone for optimism going into 2022.
