It could take Apple 12-18 months to break ties with Samsung

In light of all the recent legal drama between Apple and Samsung, it's rumored that the Cupertino-based tech giant could be in the search for someone else to manufacture the proprietary Ax SoCs found in its smartphones and tablets.

Tech analyst Amit Daryanani says that the steps need to overhaul the production and manufacturing process are numerous and complicated, and could take between a year and a year and a half, with products not becoming commercially available until 2014.

Two major players will most likely be in contention as replacements to Samsung, should Apple go that route: Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Both companies have expressed interest in the past to a potential partnership with Apple.

Daryanani says that Intel's case will be a harder sell, as it has moved beyond ARM architecture, which the iOS platform is heavily invested in.

TSMC could begin manufacturing chips for Apple as early as 2014, after it completes the transition to a 20nm production process. Capital expenditures are estimated anywhere from $1 - $3 billion, but an Apple co-investment is not out of the question.

Two other less likely scenarios exist, one which sees a merger with Global Foundries, and the other involves Apple creating its own chip fabrication plants. The latter would be an unprecedented move by Apple, who has always kept manufacturing out of house.

Huawei T8830 unveiled - dual-core ICS droid which costs just $104

There seems to be no shortage of decent Android phones at impressively low prices in China made by local companies. Today, Huawei announced the T8830, a dual-core ICS droid for $104.

As you can imagine, the specs are nothing earth-shattering, but they actually sound pretty good, considering that we're talking about featurephone-like pricing. The Huawei T8830 packs a 4" WVGA screen with Gorilla Glass, dual-core Mediatek MT6517 chipset, 512MB RAM and a 3.2MP camera. It's running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box.

Not too bad, but small local brands are providing tough competition, promising a gig of RAM, 8MP camera and Jelly Bean at a $100 price point. As with other such phones, the Huawei T8830 and its competitors are tough to get outside of China, though.

Unlocked iPhone 5 goes on sale in the US

The US market was one of the first to get the iPhone 5 on launch day. However, the only devices available until now were locked to carriers and available on contract.

Well, if you stay in the US, you don't have to look at other countries to get your unlocked iPhone 5 anymore. These devices have just hit both the online as well as the Apple brick and mortar stores in the US. The prices for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB iPhone 5 models is $649, $749 and $849 respectively, same as the iPhone 4S before.

These devices will only work on GSM networks, such as AT&T and T-Mobile in the US and will require a nano-SIM. If you order it now the phone will be shipped in one week. You can only order two units per person.

Microsoft: Surface Pro pricing to start at $899

Microsoft has just announced that the Surface Pro tablet, which will run on Windows 8 Pro, will be priced starting at $899 when it comes out in January 2013. That will be for the 64 GB version, while the 128 GB Surface Pro unit will be priced at $999. The prices do not include the Touch or Type covers.

In his post on the official Microsoft blog, the general manager of the Surface division, Panos Panay, said that both versions of the Surface Pro would come with a "Surface pen with Palm Block technology". He added:

This is an amazing feature for all you note-takers or document editors out there, especially since it has expanded capacitive and digitizing technology we’re calling Palm Block that will prevent your handwriting from getting interrupted if you accidentally place your palm on the screen as you write. This feature is pretty cool, and allows for a great inking experience alongside a great touch experience when needed.

Both versions of the Surface Pro will have "Intel’s next generation Core i5 processor" which will boost the display resolution of the tablet up to 1920x1080. The specific clock speed of the processor was not mentioned. The Surface Pro will also have a full USB 3.0 port and a mini-Display Port which will be able to show what's on the Surface on an external monitor up to a resolution of 2560X1440.

Panay added that the Surface Pro will still weigh less than two pounds and will be 14 millimeters thick. The blog post did not go into details on which date in January pre-orders will begin.

Microsoft Sells 40 Million Windows 8 Licenses

Yesterday at the Credit Suisse 2012 Annual Technology Conference Microsoft's Tami Reller (Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer for the Windows division) has announced that, in its first month of life, Windows 8 has reached 40 million sold licenses, outspacing Windows 7 in terms of upgrades.

Microsoft did not provide one-month numbers for Windows 7 but the estimates back then were that it sold about 40 million copies, meaning Windows 8 is pretty much on par with its predecessor after one month. Not a bad start for Windows 8 but certainly not a raging success.

Samsung found to violate Apple patents in Holland

The Supreme Court in The Hague found Samsung guilty of infringing another of Apple's patents today.

The patent in question involves a bounce-back effect when the end of a scrollable list is reached.

Samsung had replaced the bounce-back effect on later versions of Android with a blue glow, so only Galaxy devices running versions 2.2.1 – 3.0 which have not received the newer Android versions are said to be infringing.

Fortunately for Samsung, damages are fairly limited for the time being; the Dutch courts are allowing it 8 weeks to update the offending Galaxy devices, after which point the company will be fined €100,000 per day if infringing Galaxies still exist on the market.

Buffalo Announces the WZR-D1100H/U 802.11ac Router

S40 still alive with Nokia 205 and 206, priced at around $62

Today Nokia announced two new additions to its feature-phone lineup, the Asha 205 and Asha 206. Both phones come with dual-SIM variants as well, and look to dethrone the Asha 201 as the cheapest offering currently in the Asha lineup.

The Asha 205 comes with a 2.4 inch screen of 320 x 240 pixel resolution, 64 MB of internal memory, and a 0.3 MP camera capable of VGA images and QCIF video. It also features a full-QWERTY keyboard.

The Asha 206 has the same 2.4 inch QVGA screen, except in portrait orientation, and the same 64 MB of internal memory. Its camera has been bumped up to 1.3 MP, although it comes with a regular keypad, rather than a full keyboard.

Both new devices feature Nokia's new Slam connectivity feature, which allows fast sharing over Bluetooth without the need to pair devices. Slam works with Bluetooth versions 2.1 and up, and on several mobile platforms (Windows Phone and iOS are not supported currently, though). Also, if you're worried about the rather sparse internal memory filling up quickly, each device supports microSD cards up to 32 GB.

Both the Nokia Asha 205 and Asha 206 feature a dedicated Facebook button for quick access to your social profile, and are available in several color combinations.

Look for the Asha 205 and 206 to become available in the coming weeks for $62 before taxes and fees.
