Google just announced Google Public DNS, a new service that lets consumers use Google as their DNS service provider which similar to OpenDNS.

What is Google Public DNS?
Google Public DNS is a free, global Domain Name System (DNS) resolution service, that you can use as an alternative to your current DNS provider.

To try it out:
* Configure your network settings to use the IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as your DNS servers or
* Read our configuration instructions.

Immediate I did a quick test with my desktop using ‘ping’ and the result is Ping Timeout? What? The Google Public DNS IP Address 8.8.8.8 is down? Google blocked ping icmp? Shall I use Google DNS for now? No thanks!

In order to create a new CUPS administrator user, enter a command: lppasswd -g sys -a username.

I’m having a problem creating a new user with error message: “lppasswd: Unable to open passwd file: Permission denied” today.

And I just would like to share the solution as below:

1. List /usr/bin/lppasswd file owner and permission

planetmy:~ # ls -l /usr/bin/lppasswd
-rwsr-xr-x 1 lp sys 9428 Nov 29 2005 /usr/bin/lppasswd


2. Change lppasswd ownership

planetmy:~ # chown root /usr/bin/lppasswd


3. Add a new user and it worked

planetmy:~ # lppasswd -g sys -a cupadmin


4. Make sure you have correct permission for file /etc/cups/passwd.md5

planetmy:~ # ls -l /etc/cups/passwd.md5
-rw------- 1 lp lp 90 Nov 11 08:03 /etc/cups/passwd.md5


5. Make sure you change /usr/bin/lppasswd file back to normal

planetmy:~ # chown lp /usr/bin/lppasswd

For some reason, my Linux server show me an error message as below:

/var/log/lastlog: No such file or directory


Workaround:
Simply touching /var/log/lastlog to make it work.

Leklai is probably one of the most famous sacred substances in Thailand. A relic is an object or a personal item of religious significance, carefully preserved with an air of veneration as a tangible memorial. In order to check TELNET instances limit, view /etc/xinetd.conf and look for “instances = xx“. If “instances = 10” which mean you’re limit to 10 TELNET session on your server. Configure ‘best’ number of instances as per your reference for solving this kind of issue.

If the number of server instances is lowered, some arbitrarily picked servers will be killed to satisfy the limit; this will happen after any servers are terminated because of failing the remote location or access time checks.
