I am willing to bet that you have seen some of Naomi Finlay’s photography in one of your favorite interior design magazines. I asked Naomi if I could share some of her amazing portfolio and she graciously said yes. The human element is what really brings scale and functionality to these images. I think it is always intriguing to see the owners of the place that you are admiring, somehow it either validates the space or ads a twist to what you may have assumed. Naomi is obviously talented and well versed in the skills of lighting.

Interiors by Be Modern 20th century design

I recently came across Italy based Be Modern, they have a stunning selection of Scandinavian and Brazilian designed furnishings. They also have a section where they show projects that they have worked on. “Be Modern is a project curated by Cinzia Ferrara and Monika Unger, both architects and passionate and knowledgeable collectors of mid Century Design.” It is very evident that Cinzia and Monika share the same love of mid century design as many of us do and they have some fantastic show rooms and displays.

Modern made in America by Modestics

I first discovered the work of Linda Geiser and Max Geiser when I came across their stunning beading, Wallter. Linda and Max found a need and a focus for modern products made in the U.S. So what did they do about it? They started a blog and a store, Modestics, with just that focus. I instantly recognized some of the products that were highlighted in their store and I am sure you will as well. Another feature I like is that you read the bio of the designer and maker. Make sure to check out their blog as they discuss some topics surround design in America.

Recognizing there was a void in promotion of American Made Modern, along came Modestics. Although the resurgence of American manufacturing has been a topic of discussion for years, the focus has been largely on the big auto companies. Modestics highlights the small companies and independent designers that are truly making a difference in American design.

A modern house in the forest

This modern wooded home fits right in with it woodland surroundings. The inside does feel a little cabin like but maybe that was the intent. The kitchen is great with the mix of dark cabinets and lighter wood and the bright red rug looks really striking. The interiors are definitely eclectic and create a lot of textures and colors to look at.

Casa Brixen by Vudafieri Saverino Partners

There is something comforting and warming about this modern addition by Vudafieri Saverino Partners. The glass tower ads dimensions of new but still ties into the existing architecture. The interiors are calming as well with all the art and relics nicely placed through out.

Architecture from the 1960s in the Italian Alps, transformed by a glass tower to connect all three levels and bring the outdoor garden inside. The interiors feature traditional wood and stones from the region creating a contemporary design that conserves the rigorous - almost monastic - spirit of the typical local architecture .

Modern Interiors by Chris Nguyen

The Fannin project by Chris Nguyen has a more tailored masculine feel compared to his Reeves Residence project, which is mid century to the “T”. I am liking the dark walls found throughout the interiors, it really lets the lighter colored pieces stand out. Chris also has a way of grouping objects and layering textures, that really work well together. Make sure to check out the rest of his work.

Modern by Found Associates

Found Associates has a stellar portfolio with some fantastic modern additions to some not so modern structures. The juxtaposition of these two styles of architecture are different but they feel as though they are playing nice. The interiors of these projects are amazing, clean lined with layers of texture. There are so many cool features in these pictures, the orange kitchen island, the orange and green bathroom, and the first pic in all it’s masculine glory.

Yingst retreat by Salmela Architects

I wouldn’t mind taking a vacation at the Yingst retreat by Salmela Architects. I really don’t need mention the color pallet do I? I really like the series of out buildings this place would make a perfect gather place for family and friends. The location is stunning nestled amount nature and three miles from the Sleeping Bear dunes on Lake Michigan. The over stated fire place with it’s upward reach is such a structural art piece.

Mid-Century Modern in Hammond Wood by Harold Esten

After yesterday’s post I took a look through some of the sold mid century homes on Modern Capital and found one that won my heart. This one-of-a-kind home designed by Harold Esten plays to my favorite color pallet black, white and loads of teak inside. I love the simplicity of the structure and the furnishings. The owners at the time had fantastic taste in furnishings. How about the pale blue kitchen, does it stay or go?

1958 Custom MCM in Hollin Hills by Casper Neer

Fellow Mid Century Modern fanatic, Realtor Michael Shapiro just listed this stunning 1958 home designed by Casper Neer. We all love to look at the picture perfect houses and interiors in the magazines but I really enjoy viewing homes for sale as you get a glimpse of how people live without worrying about how their pictures are going to turn out. “Neer, who was a long time resident of Hollin Hills and did many of the additions to the homes in the community, graduated from Harvard’s School of Design during the time that Marcel Breuer and I.M. were professors.”
