Artist Jeffrey Loura’s work is always a pleasure to see when it comes up in my Instagram feed. If you haven’t seen Jeffrey’s work then you are in for a new discovery. I was instantly struck by the shapes and figures going from thick to thin. Once you are done with the silhouette of the pieces, your are then treated to an engagement with the colors and textures found on the surface. They look incredible in groupings in different heights. “New York based artist, Jeffrey Loura, creates organic, elemental vessels. Jeffrey moved to New York in 1996 to earn his BFA at Parsons School of Design, where he studied Illustration. He began throwing ceramics five years later in 2001. These atmospheric hand-thrown ceramics are aesthetically modern and primitive. The focus of the work is the idea of familiarity and opposing concepts; individualism vs community; female vs male; life vs death. These quiet, peaceful forms are the result.”

The Gattman Residence by Cliff Burlew

The Gattman Residence by Cliff Burlew is currently on the market and is a site to behold. The house was built in 1959 located in Encino California. There is a nice juxtaposition to the appearance of the front and the back of the house. The front, a subtle almost minimal in appearance does not give away what is to be found on the inside while the back of the house is an open book hosting a whole wall of glass. I guess maybe that is how it should be. You don’t get to see everything from the street. Everything about this house sits well in “my mind” when I think about the ideal mid century house. I appreciate the current owners taste and attention to historical preservation.

Mid Century Modern in Toronto

This Mid Century Modern in Toronto is currently on the market. Lately there has been quite a few nice mid century homes for sale but this one caught my attention. I feel like the outside is hiding how nice the interiors are. You can’t help being drawn to those wood ceilings. For me the ceilings are the highpoint of the place. Just like most MCM homes the floor plan is wide open with plenty of glass. We don’t know the architect as the description states “Architecturally designed 1950’s bungalow” but I think most of us would love to live there.

The MHA Site Office by Open Space

I have to admit that I get a little excited when Open Space releases a new video. The MHA Site Office designed by architects A. Quincy Jones, Whitney R. Smith and structural engineer Edgardo Contini in 1947 in the housing tract known as Crestwood Hills is the subject of their latest production. The current home owner and Architect, Cory Buckner shares with us the story of Crestwood Hills, her home and her preservation work. I think its only fitting that an Architect owns and lives in this historic structure. Nice work on the video guys!

Ceramicist Julie Nelson

Ceramicist Julie Nelson has her own way of taking a living thing and making them alive in another form. I first came across her work in the form of an almost cubist style human hand. Her series of human hands is probably my favorite. Most of use our hands to communicate at some level and for some it is their voice. Each hand looks to be expressing or communicating a different felling or emotion that can be interpreted by the individual viewing the pieces. Her flock or series of birds are nice with their simplicity of shape mixed with a flock mentality create a larger scale experience.

“Her work focuses on the elemental and she crafts in a series often displaying objects in groups that interrelate. In her previous incarnation, Julie designed and produced a collection of organic, ceramic, sculptural lamps which have been commissioned, published and featured across the globe, including the International Design Yearbook, edited by Ingo Maurer. “

All White Walls in a Modern Home

All white walls in a modern home is often described as cold or plain looking but in these interiors its the perfect canvas to exercise a minimal approach while displaying design and art. The home went through a renovation with some visually fantastic results. The home has plenty of space at 3k square feet. I like the mix of different styles going on here, I think they work well together. The use of different wood types throughout the house offers that punch of warmth needed with all white interiors.

“The house is arranged over five levels. On the first floor is a further double-reception, with working fire, currently separated by removable shelving but open in its natural state. The front of the house is south-facing and both rooms are flooded with light from floor-to-ceiling sash windows.”

Brady Residence by Killingsworth, Brady & Associates

The latest installment from Open Space just dropped and it is fantastic. First off, I am so glad Mick and Elias are producing pieces like these. I greatly appreciate these home owners and their willingness to let us take a peek into their amazing homes. This latest piece is focused on The Brady Residence built in 1970 by Killingsworth, Brady & Associates. I have followed Lewy (current owner) for some time on Instagram (who hasn’t ?) and I was stoked to see him talk about the house. I love that he makes the statement “I am kind of a purist when it comes to mid century”. His collection of art and furniture is fairly hard to rival, his tastes are truly pure. Mid Century by Charles Wong

Charles Wong, AIA built this Japanese inspired mid century modern home for Dr. and Mrs. George Yuen in 1962 located in Los Angeles California. This immaculate kept home is currently on the market. Obviously the house is amazing on the inside but the exterior landscaping matches the impressiveness of the structure as well.

“All of these intricate details are met along the periphery of the house as they appear to be delicately balanced over the horizontal ribboning of clerestory windows. Engawa decking further accentuates the thematic elements of Sukiya-zukuri influence and is clearly reminiscent of Kyoto’s Katsura Imperial Palace in which Walter Gropius described as “a product of sheer vitality uninhibited in its feeling for volume and movement” after his visit there in 1954.” — deasy penner podley

Link Farm House by Slade Architecture

Slade Architecture has designed one of the best “farm houses” I have ever seen. The juxtaposition of the bottom stone volume and the top glass volume is beautiful. I love that the stone and some of the cherry wood paneling was taken for the very spot the house was built on. I can see why the owners wanted an intimate view of the surrounding area with the “glass house” giving them just that. The interiors are just as minimal and exact as the design of the structure. All around the house and its relationship with the land around it, is outstanding. Never had a desire to live in a farm house until now.
