I really like the BOXHEAD house by Carter+Burton. Concrete, dark walls and exposed wood walls are a very cool combo. This home does have some great “green” qualities as well.

Tactics on efficient budgeting lead to the concept of creating boxes in a larger box; each shift in scale is marked by a shift in preciousness completed at the cabinet level.

The double cmu wall is tilted in plan to gather sun in the colder months. This thermal mass is filled with a special foam insulation allowing for some thermal bridging for solar lag while featuring a durable inside to outside relationship

Oak plywood creates the boxes and unfolded boxes implied creating a contrast of cozy informal modern with expanses of shifting light. Drywall is used sparingly while balancing the budget.

The linear concrete counter runs from the pantry and kitchen to the dining area forming a buffet and built in entertainment cabinet. Custom removable cutting boards allow for an expansion break.

Recycled terrazzo ground concrete slab cutouts are recycled from a dumpster and used as tile in the main bathroom lining the floor, shower wall and forming the tub platform.

Artek headquartered in Finland doesn’t just make furniture, they have a strong presence of modernism in everyday environments. They have a great “projects” section of their site that really shows of their sense of minimal modern design. More pics after the jump

Artek was founded in 1935 by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl. The business idea of the company was “to sell furniture and to promote modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other means.” The founders of Artek advocated a new kind of environment for everyday life. They believed in a grand synthesis of the arts and wanted to make a difference in town planning as well as architecture and design.

What an incredible modern home smack dab in Tijuana Mexico. I really like the balance of natural and hard surface textures. The scrap wood exterior wall is really a cool element only to reveal all of the interior concrete walls. I love all of the modern landscaping outside, inside and even on the roof. I really love these minimal modern interiors by Thomas Bendal. I had to ask myself why interiors like these were so appealing to me. These minimal rooms are not filled with all these “designer” or MCM objects I think I need to have. The color pallets and the few nicely crafted pieces in these rooms really can stand on their own. Artist Roger Borg sent me an email about his newest modern neon sculptures. I don’t believe I have seen anything like these. Some people may see these as just modern lamps but the fact that they produce light defines and enhances the lines and shapes of the sculpture. In the right spaces these would be killer. through observation and speculation i test the world and its workings. what is of paramount interest to me is its nature at the most base level. how circumstances arise. how sequences form and events unfold. how single narratives merge with others, giving rise to more complex interactions. how information is transcribed within the fluid column of time. how the present moment comes to be, and how it is continually steered into the next. at this boundary of present and future, possibility reigns supreme. infinity rules what may be. permutations abound. but beyond this cusp emerges only a single lone instance of what is and what has become. it is with deference to these thoughts, and within this context, that my work is born.
