I have only put in around 30 minutes of game time, but I’m a bit disappointed on the controls and find the game somewhat frustrating trying to line up my shots. Even changing the sensitivity of the controls didn’t seem to help that much. It seems a bit ‘jaggety’ when moving around. However a great feature is you can move the controls anywhere you like on the screen.

Also, keep in mind this is a game ported to the PlayBook from 1996! So keep your expectations of the graphics inline with that.

Story:

Developer description:

Pinball Deluxe HD is a pinball game featuring 5 different tables – more are added regularly. Each table plays very differently and has a unique style: Brix, Wild West, Carnival, Space and Underwater.

You have to defeat your enemy within a given amount of days. You start each level with a castle and a few soldiers. You need to expand and move your soldiers along the map to other castles, and attack enemy castles, thus overtaking that castle. Once you overtake all castles on the map, you win. Instead of a flat map like other games of this genre, the developers created a unique spherical surface, that gives a cool effect when your scrolling around the world.

I think the main objective of the developers on this game was ‘keep it simple’. As an example, when you click on a castle, your only options are to send ‘some’, ‘half’, ‘most’ or ‘all’ troops in that castle to another one. You don’t have to enter a number of troops you want to send in a text box, you are given 4 simple options, and it works very well. There are no options to upgrade your castles (you will automatically get upgrades on castles with a minimum amount of soldiers in them after each day) and your forces are replenished automatically with reinforcements based on your performance at the beginning and middle of each round.

I was surprised to see some lag or stuttering during gameplay. It’s not enough to detract from the game, but it did get a little annoying when scrolling around larger maps, and having to click on a castle more than once to get the options. I also found it very annoying to HAVE TO view the recap after each day of battle, when I would just like to skip it and get back into the action.

Overall I was very happy with the game. It took me only a few levels for the simple gameplay to grow on me, and once it did I spent hours playing it. Very fun indeed.

You will be launching 5 types of beavers with different properties from a canon at those pesky frogs (oh, how the tables have turned since the original Battle Frogging where the frogs were in control). The Lite version has 15 levels to play through. If you opt for the full version at $1.99, you’ll get 75 levels.

The graphics are simple and get the job done. However if I didn’t know any better I would have guessed those were little green aliens of some sort and not spherical frogs.

I’m glad the developer has lite versions of his games so we can try before we buy. If your jonsing for Angry Birds on your PlayBook, give this one a shot.
