Dozens of curlers from around the world will soon be arriving in Langley and Surrey for the annual Optimist International U- 18 Curling Championships from March 27 to 31 2013.

These young, highly competitive curlers representing clubs from Canada, the United States and Japan will compete over a five-day tournament in an event dedicated for athletes less than 18 years of age. It provides an opportunity for young athletes to mature and enhance their curling skills in an international junior competition.

“In curling, a child does not need to be bigger, faster or stronger to grow from playground to podium,” said Al Kersey, event chair.

In addition to the tournament, competitors will also have the opportunity to participate in a high performance development camp to focus on honing their skills. With the guidance of four international curling coaches, the curlers will work on team building skills and mental and physical prep before games.

The U-18 championships attract some of the best young curlers in the world, and many go on to compete at professional levels.

Alumni Rachel Homan of Ontario won the 2013 Scotties Canadian Women’s Curling Championship in February and is now competing for Team Canada at the World Women’s Curling Championships in Riga, Latvia from March 16 to 24.

Another past competitor, Team Brown, from the Kamloops Curling Club just won the 2013 Tim Hortons Junior Women’s BC Championship and competed for Team Canada at the 2013 Junior World Championships in Sochi, Russia.

“With the increased television exposure this winter, curling has become the ‘hot’ sport due to the reduced hockey season,” said Mel Kositsky, host chair.

“This event has a history of producing a number of today’s champions and hopefully the communities of Surrey and Langley will come out and watch these future rock stars.”

Live Scoring Links:

The 2013 Optimist International U-18 Curling Championships will be held at the Langley Curling Club, 20699 42 Ave in Langley and at the Cloverdale Curling Club, 6150 176 St in Surrey.

An exciting new initiative from the Canadian Curling Association (CCA) means curling fans are just a click away from watching their favourite sport from anywhere on the planet with an internet signal.

Curling TV, which is now on-line and available at www.curlingtv.ca, offers curling fans a wide array of video options, ranging from archived TSN broadcasts from Season of Champions events (round-robin and playoffs), archival footage from older events (wait till you check out some of the highlights of past Briers dating back to 1955!), as well as instructional videos, equipment tips and post-game media scrum footage from our championship events.

“We’re always looking for new ways to offer opportunities to our fans to get involved with curling,” said Greg Stremlaw, the Chief Executive Officer of the CCA. “We’re very excited about what this new venture gives our fans, and where we can take it in the future.”

TSN broadcasts from Season of Champions events will be loaded onto the site within 48 hours of their appearing on television; currently, broadcasts are available from all of the 2011-12 events and the events that have taken place during the 2012-13 season.

“What we’re most excited about is that anybody interested in curling can find something to watch on Curling TV,” said Stremlaw. “Competitive curlers and coaches can use the archived broadcasts for game analysis and instruction, while beginning curlers will find benefits from such features as the equipment guides. There really is something for everyone to enjoy.”
