Sony Publishes Massive Q&A Regarding Breach

Q.1 When did you realise the system had been intruded?

We discovered between April 17 and April 19 there was an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network.

Q.2 How did you know that the system was intruded?

We watch for any issues that may be raised with respect to security and monitor for such issues both internally and externally.

Q.3 What is the main reason to this problem? Which parts of the system were vulnerable to the intrusion?

We are currently conducting a thorough investigation of the situation. Since this is an overall security related issue, we will not comment further on this case.

Q.4 What action did you take (are you taking)? Is there any possibility of further unauthorized access?

As soon as we learned of this issue, 1) we temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services in order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services, 2) we have also engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened, and 3) quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

Q.5 How many were affected? How many per each region? What is the latest status of PlayStation Network registered account/ operating countries.

Our investigation indicates that all PlayStation Network/ Qriocity accounts may have been affected.

Q.6 Does that mean all users’ information was compromised? Tell us more in details of what personal information leaked.

In terms of possibility, yes. We believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password, login, password security answers, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data may have been obtained, including purchase history and billing address (city, state/province, zip or postal code). If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, it is possible that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may also have been obtained.

Q.7 Have you notified those users?

We are sending out e-mails directly to these users to their e-mail address registered on the PS Network accounts. Also, we have posted web notices, and additional necessary procedures have been followed by each region.

Q.8 Have you received reports or claims that their PSN ID information/ credit card had been used improperly?

Not at this point in time.

Q.9 I want to know if my account has been affected.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. Additionally, if you use the same user name or password for your PlayStation Network or Qriocity service account for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are back on line, we also strongly recommend that you log on to change your password.
For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, postal mail or other scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking.

Q.10 What should I do to prevent any unauthorized use of my (credit card) personal information?

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, postal mail or other scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. Additionally, if you use the same user name or password for your PlayStation Network or Qriocity service account for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are back on line, we also strongly recommend that you log on to change your password.
To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports.

Q.11 Since when have PSN/Qriocity become unavailable and in which region?

PSN/Qriocity services have not been available since April 20 (US time) in all regions.

Q.12 How come it is taking so much time to resume the service?

We are taking the investigation seriously. We decided to keep the service down to allow us to conduct a thorough investigation and verify smooth operation of our network services.

Q.13 How serious is this? Have the hackers broken the security on PSN/Qriocity? Are you taking necessary measures to prevent such outage happening in the future?

Since this is an overall security related issue, we will not comment further on this case but we are working to restore and maintain the services, including countermeasures against future intrusions.

Q.14 When will the service resume?

We are taking the investigation seriously. We will keep the service down to allow us to conduct a thorough investigation and verify smooth operation of our network services but are working hard to resume the services as soon as we can be reasonably assured security concerns are addressed.

Q.15 Seems like SOE service was also not available/ suffering outage. Is this true? Is this due to the same reason as the PSN/Qriocity outage?

SOE's service is available although a service interruption due to an external attack did occur. A thorough investigation is ongoing.

Q.16 I want my money back (subscription fee, content) since the PSN/Qriocity was not available.

When the full services are restored and the length of the outage is known, we will assess the correct course of action.

Q.17 There seems to be some games that cannot be played even offline?

Depending on the game titles, but mainly PSN games, some may require access to PSN for

Sony Provide More Details on Intrusion

In their latest blog post Sony have provided more details on the intrusion into PSN

The important bits:

We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.

We believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided:

Name,

Address (city, state, zip),

Country,

Email Address,

Birthdate,

PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login,

Handle/PSN online ID.

It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained.

While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility

PSO recommends doing the following:

Using a secure password management solution like, LastPass or Keepass and changing all of your passwords to strong, unique ones

Monitoring your credit / debit card to ensure no fraudulent transactions are taking place

Be extra aware of spear phising attacks now that criminals can build up a better profile of you when sending malicious emails

What stands out to me is that passwords were compromised, why were Sony not hashing them ? That's basic security practice.

If they are unable to do such a basic thing what other vulnerabilities do they have ?

Sony Announce Two Playstation Branded Android Tablets

Images on the site

Sony have announced two Playstation Branded Android Tablets the S1 and S2.

The S1 will be released in Autumn 2011 with the S2 to follow, they will both be able to connect to the PlayStation Suite and run a number of PSOne titles.

S1

The S1 will support Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), WiFi and 3G and feature a 9.4 inch display

S2

The S2 will also support Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and features two 5.5-inch displays. The S2's two screens will be able to operate together or independently

No further specs have been released yet, but its probably safe to assume that they will feature dual core processors and at least 512mb of RAM

Interestingly the S1 appears not to be beveled an improvement on the iPad 2 that dramatically reduces its perceived size when held.

The iPad is an incredibly polished product with a strong ecosystem behind it. Whether or not Sony's tablet can compete is yet to be seen. There's certainly a spot in the market waiting for a quality Android tablet though.

Why is PSN still down ?

Playstation Online would like to say that this is "speculative report" but could hold true.

The past five days of PlayStation Network down time was sparked by a new PS3 hack that let users download PSN content for free spurring Sony to pull the plug.

That's according to new a speculative report that suggests the release of a hacked custom firmware which enables the downloading of PSN content for free is at the root of the ongoing issue.

The report highlights that a custom firmware, known as 'Rebug', was released on March 31 which, in brief, gives retail PS3s most of the options and functionality of a debug (or developer) PS3 unit.

A week later, tutorials appeared detailing a way in which users could use this firmware to download PSN content for free using fake (NOT stolen) credit card numbers.

Apparently, hackers "found out that you could provide fake CC# info and the authenticity of the information was never checked as you were on Sony's private developer PSN network (essentially a network that Sony trusted)."

Piracy ensued, which is what triggered Sony's decision to shut down PSN, speculates the report, going against common suspicion that the severs had simply failed due to a direct attack from disgruntled hackers.

The report also says "no one's personal information was accessible via this hack. Not to say they couldn't get it, but no one is admitting to it being available," backing up other reports today that the risk of credit card theft via PSN is 'not substantial'.

Killzone 3 Review

Killzone has had a rough ride over the years.

The game is just hounded by the press. Fact. It’s dubbed a “Halo Killer”, but it wasn’t Sony that said that, it was a magazine. Sony did themselves no favours with Killzone 2 mind with the now infamous E3 showing of a Playstation 3 ‘vision’ of what Killzone would be like on PS3.

Sony did later redeem themselves when KZ2 showed up with gameplay on show. Now it’s the turn of Killzone 3. Lets get this out of the way from the start, KZ3 is the most technically stunning game I have ever seen or played. The amount of special effects this game throws about the screen is mind blowing. From cloth effects to show flying about your face, if ever there were a game that screams to be played in 3D Killzone 3 is it.

Gameplay is as you were. The new addition to Killzone is Playstation Move and it works very well, in fact it’s the game Move has been waiting for as KZ duck and cover just works so well with Sonys motion controller.

Killzone 3 starts off where KZ2 ends, sort of. The story doesn’t win any awards but does the job. KZ3s sound is fantastic as always.

Online play is as before but I can’t help feel a little gutted by some of the lacklustre maps on offer. Another very sour point for me is the lack of online co-op. I don’t want to sit with someone looking at half a screen. Everyone cried out for co-op in KZ2 yet the developers have only half listened. I must stress that this is the only sticking point of an excellent game

Killzone 3 is brilliant but a few niggles keep it back from ultimate glory. I gave KZ2 a perfect score but KZ3 gets a 9.

A few updates, online co-op and maps could take this to a 10 game but for now it will have to miss that top score.

9/10

Battlefield 3 Stuns!

EA has stuck a new Battlefield 3 gameplay trailer on its website and it looks incredible.

And we mean properly incredible: The video itself is actually almost three minutes of gameplay footage chunks, so there's no flashy editing to get in the way as with the first Battlefield 3 gameplay trailer.

That means you can get a good look at some pure unadulterated Battlefield 3. Did we mention that it looks good?

Just watch.

PSP2 to launch with OLED display and 3G data options ?

With the Sony PSP2 expected to be unveiled this Thursday, January 27th, new rumours and reports have seen the upcoming device pegged with an OLED touchscreen display and 3G data capabilities.

Leaked in the reputable and oft-tech accurate Nikkei newspaper in Japan, the long overdue follow-up to the PSP is said to feature a larger display than its predecessor with the mooted OLED offering adding improved image quality and colour depth.

Powering the increased specs of the PSP2 will be a new processor with the portable gaming device adding to its online on the move gaming credentials through the inclusion of 3G network support. Announced as being supplied with 3G connectivity in Japan via the NTT DoCoMo network, it is currently unknown which service providers would support the device here in the UK.

Whilst these speculative specs have whet our appetite ahead on this week’s expected unveiling, it is hard to see how Sony intends to successfully launch both the PSP2 and widely tipped PSP Phone within a month of each other.

Which device would you rather see added to your tech arsenal the PSP2 or the PSP Phone? Share your thoughts via the forum.

Modern Combat-Domination Review

If one thing is certain in life, it’s that… great ideas and products will be copied, replicated and in some cases this will happen multiple times. From stories to cars, movies and yes, video games.

It’s fair to say that some times, things are just copied and changed slightly to try and fool the end user. Gameloft have played no such tricks. They have taken a game, mirrored every aspect and delivered the best shooter available yet on PSN (Playstation Network).

Some games do a great job of trying to bring a game to the table that gives a nod to other games yet keeps things fresh. Take Metal Gear Solid and Splinter cell as a good examples of this.

With Modern Warfare, oh sorry, Modern Combat (see what they’ve done?) Gameloft have brought a game out that I found myself struggling to contain my excitement over.

Before we talk about the game and what game it’s trying to mimic the big thing that stands out is the price.

£6.29 or £4.79 if you are a Plus member.

To put this in context a PS Mini is £3.99 for 80p more you have a full online/offline first person shooter. Now at that price you’d expect the game to be a dog.

But what you get here is a game that boasts the best Move play I’ve seen yet with an fps, fast and fluid, with a robust set of online tools to keep many shooter fans happy for hours and hours. Even when the servers die off a little the game throws in AI to every match on and offline to max out the numbers. All in all you get 5 good sized maps to duke it out on.

This takes me to the game play and maps. Many years ago when ‘I were a lad’ I hooked up my PC tower to a 56k modem and installed a HUGE fps called… Counter Strike.

Never before has a game copied another as blatantly as Modern Combat has done here. From the title screen to choosing what weapon, grenades, armour etc, this game oozes sweat and blood from Valves flagship counter terrorism shooter.

The load-out before each round lets you choose guns with money, a small amount to start, and the better you do the more money you get meaning the better the gear you can buy for the next round.

Don’t do as well and the game gets much harder and this makes for more refined play. If you come up against someone that you are convinced you took out, chances are they are well togged up with armour.

The Trial map is Sandstorm, anyone that has played on Dust (CS) or Crossroads (Socom) will be right at home. All 5 maps are very well balanced and lead to some great choke points where exciting fire fights break out. Whether arming missiles, planting bombs or extracting a VIP everyone will be able to get straight into MC. What we’ve played online so far was smooth and went without hitch. Voice chat is very clear but if using a headset remember to turn it on in the options before going online!

With the game clocking in at only just shy of 700MB you’d think that the graphics would fail but this not so. Sun glare, mist/dust, birds flying about and some nice particle effects put this game on par with the likes of Rainbow Six.

Some maps are ripped from CS and some are a mix of COD MW 1&2. Shadows and lighting play a big part in making the levels look prettier than they are.

After you’ve spent your £6 you will be left smarming at the prices you’ve paid for far lesser games. In fact, in terms of “value for money” I can honestly say you’ll be hard pressed to beat this and as a Plus member you’ll compare everything else you buy to this and think twice before splashing out.

Just one thing holds the game back from ultimate glory. When creating a match lobby the game stays in the list of games only until you start the game with no way, that I’ve seen, of going back to the lobby to let others join you. Once you start that’s it. The saving grace is the fact that you can set up a game in seconds and invite friends. Clan matches can be played in private lobbies and you could practice against the AI before hand or split your team up to tag along with the AI.

When choosing a score it would be a very easy 8/10 but you just simply can’t ignore that price and value for money that takes the score up another notch to 9.

Gameplay 8

Graphics 8

Value 10

Overall 9 (Not an average)

Scores based on the game being a Download only title.

Portal 2 PS3, PC connectivity confirmed

It looks like the definitive version of Portal 2 on console WILL be the PlayStation 3 edition, after Valve's announced a roster of connectivity features between PS3 and PC.

First up, the PlayStation 3 version of Portal 2 will ship with cross platform play, Valve's announced, allowing PS3 users to play with PC and Mac gamers.

Persistent cloud-based storage of save games and cross platform chat with PC and Mac users is also confirmed for PS3.

Even better, Valve has revealed that PS3 users who link their PSN and Steam accounts will be entitled to a FREE download of Portal 2 on the PC, which sounds like a fantastic, co-op encouraging deal to us.

"PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites," said said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve.

"We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product," added Gabe Newell.

"Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases."

Valve revealed its partnership with Sony at E3 2010 and called the PS3 'the most open console'.

PSP2 'as powerful as PS3', out Christmas - rumors

The PSP2 is as powerful as the PS3 and will be released as early as Christmas according to respected trade mag MCV, which reported yesterday on a planned reveal for the device on January 27 - just a week after Nintendo's own 3DS press events in New York and Amsterdam.

According to the new report, Sony is pitching PSP2 as a high-end portable equivalent of it's home console, and has even told licensees the device 'is as powerful as the PlayStation 3'.

The new PSP is expected to arrive at the end of this year, says MCV, perhaps even as early as October.

As previously reported, the handheld includes a HD screen and twin-stick controls in the familiar 'brick' design. It'll also use an unspecified media format for games, but you'll be able to download smaller titles from PSN.

Sony has supposedly consulted publishers about launch timings and is encouraging games with "richer, more in-depth content" to differentiate from app-centric Apple and Android devices.

More PSP2 details will be revealed following the Jan 27 announce at GDC and E3, the report concludes.

Via CVG

This is great news and looks like we could see BD Micro after all.

If it is indeed as powerful as the PS3 battery life will be a big concern, perhaps it will throttle back the power when running on battery and then boost the performance back up if you plug the device in.

This presents some obvious problems however as its a bad for the life of Lithium Ion batteries to keep them plugged in on charge

Encouraging games with "richer, more in-depth content" to differentiate from app-centric Apple and Android devices. Is certainly a good idea but the question is will developers want to pay for the development of such games when there are so many smart phone users already buying app's out there.

PSP2 official announcement on January 27 - rumors

Sony is to officially announce the PSP2 on January 27 at a special press conference in Tokyo, according to reports.

Trade publication MCV claims that game publishers were informed late last year of Sony's PSP2 plans, which would hardly be a surprise seeing as the handheld has become a worse kept secret than PSPgo was ahead of its E3 unveiling in 2009.

Last November, EA told CVG it had access to PSP2, while Square Enix and Mortal Kombat dev Netherrealm have spoken openly about the new handheld too.

A rear touch panel is one of a number of features repeatedly rumored for the PSP2, and has been referenced by patents from Sony itself.

One of the titles supposedly in development for the new handheld is a version of Uncharted. That'd shift a few machines, we reckon.

Via CVG

It wouldn't shock me to see most PS3 games playable on PSP2 with remote play. Anyone remember Lair?

PS Phone video shows Resident Evil 2, Ridge Racer

A video has emerged showing Sony's 'PlayStation Phone' Xperia Play running PSOne classics Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer.

Although Sony STILL hasn't confirmed the gaming phone, videos showing off the device in 'PSP mode' using the PlayStation Pocket application hit the web last week.

Interestingly, the user here doesn't seem to be playing the games through the PlayStation themed interface shown off in previous videos, instead he seems to be booting the games off a memory card using a 'ROM Buddy' (legal?)

As you'll see for yourself, RE2 and Rage Racer look and run pretty much as you'd expect.

"The trailer demonstrates some of the wide range of combat scenarios which players will encounter in the game's diverse new battlefield of Tajikistan, with Knox's narration detailing his personal take on the conflict. From defending bases to sweeping through mountains, villages and towns to flush out entrenched enemies, Knox and his Marine Fireteams are shown engaging insurgents at range and close-quarters, supported by ground and air support. In an awesome display of power, A10 bombers are shown obliterating an insurgent stronghold with a strafing bombing run before the marines sweep in "

PSP Phone to be unveiled in Feb, released in April?

Pocket Lint is claiming that sources close to the matter have confirmed to them that The Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone will hit shops in April, after a February Mobile World Congress announcement

Whether this is true or not though is uncertain as previously it was claimed that the phone would be unveiled on December 9th and that day came and went without any announcements from Sony but it does appear to just be a matter of time before sony officially announce the phone with Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg, saying in November:

"There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere", when asked about the PlayStation phone’s existence.

Before going on to say:

He wants to make a lot of "noise" with a new device at Mobile Word Congress 2011 in February, and stated that there is no technological issues with launching a game-oriented phone.

Splinter Cell HD Collection confirmed for PS3

The speculation can end as Ubisoft has officially listed a Splinter Cell HD Collection on PS3 for 2011.

In a sneaky confirmation that gave us the slip late last week, Ubisoft announced Splinter Cell Trilogy HD as one of the publisher's titles for next year.

It's only listed as a PlayStation 3 title at the moment, which jars with the series' being originally and predominantly only on Xbox.

Apart from a trade price of £20.42, no further details have been released, although we assume the trio will be made up of the original Splinter Cell, Pandora Tomorrow and the excellent Chaos Theory.

The first hint that retro Fisher was coming to the modern day was a listing that popped up on Amazon in August.

It was followed by a Zavvi listing for the same product a month later, leaving us pretty sure this was on the cards.

I'm very excited about this. The best SC games were the first ones. If online is intact this will be a huge game for PS3 owners.

Android Phones And iPhones Getting PlayStation Apps

The European iPhone and Android markets will provide a launchpad for Sony's new quest to get smart phone users checking up on their PlayStation Network business more often. Android phones, iPhones and iPod Touches will be able to download an official PlayStation app "soon," (read as soon as Steve Jobs decides its OK) and though a North American announcement hasn't been made yet, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands have all been named on a list of countries that will be getting access first.

Checking up on PSN trophies, tracking friends' statuses and sharing information directly to Facebook and Twitter will all be possible with the free apps, according to a post on the official European PlayStation blog. News feeds and updates from Sony about fresh products will also be included.

Staying caught up with friends and trophies is all well and good, but Sony's still going to have a long way to go to catch up with Microsoft's ambitious Windows Phone 7 Xbox Live integration. We can probably assume that the fabled PSP phone (which Sony hasn't announced yet ) will fill in some more gaps when it eventually comes out, but right now, they're just slowly playing catchup one continent at a time.

A PSP phone with industry-leading gaming capabilities and all of these other features would be a game-changer, though. Optimistically, I'd like to think that this is Sony's first baby step into realizing such a vision.

Uncharted 3 gameplay footage emerges

See the website for the video

See, this is what Michael Parkinson was missing on his chat show - exciting videogame coverage. Over the pond, talk show Late Night With Jimmy Fallon was the venue for a first official look at Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception’s gameplay.

Two things are apparent from the footage, which you can see below: first, that host Jimmy Fallon couldn’t hit the side of a barn, and second, that Uncharted 3 looks absolutely awesome. The fire effects look great, and it appears that Drake has more close-quarters fighting skills than ever.

The footage also reveals that Dake will be taking a trip to France in his new adventure - the spacious building burning to the ground is described by Naughty Dog designers Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra as a château.

There’s also repeated sightings of grizzled sidekick Sully bumbling after Drake - does this hint at a co-op mode in Uncharted 3? We’d certainly welcome it.

Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is due for release next November. Hurrah!

Playstation Phone Breaks Cover

 See website for videos

As rumors of an upcoming "PlayStation phone" hit a fever pitch, there's now a new video posted online that shows a clear, succinct look at the device in action.

It looks pretty complete, so the question is when this phone will actually come out.

Just a couple days ago, a video of the phone went online, but it was extremely blurry and far away, so no one really got a good look at it. This one is completely different.

The video shows the phone as running the "Gingerbread" version of Android, which has yet to be released to the public. It also shows how the phone slides open to reveal a game pad instead of a Qwerty keyboard. There's also a PlayStation icon in the app list, giving credence to the idea that it will be able to play PlayStation games.

The app looks different than the PSP; it has tabs for "recently played," "library," and "all." The video, however, doesn't show any games as being available.

The phone will reportedly not have the word "PlayStation" in its name. Supposedly to make it as mass-market as possible, it will just carry the generic name "Zeus Z1."

Sony Erricson make it official on the 9th December as invites were sent out for a date in France with Sony Erricson boss doing his stuff.

We'll bring you news as we get it.

GT5 First Impressions

No one may ever be able to finish GT5 to fully review it, however here are some first impressions:

Menu's:

I actually quite like the menu's they are pretty slick! Good integration with friends list, easy to navigate and visually very nice. The only thing I will say when loading up is the menu starts off by having a racing crew rendered vid in the background and this looks awful, the people look so terrible they wouldn't look good on a PS2 (minor issue)!!! However this background does change once you buy a car which makes the menu look much much better! Surely someone at PD should of said lets get rid of the driver/crew vids and stick to rendering cars!

Gameplay (mechanics):

This is where GT5 really shines! I have played Forza 3 and although the graphics and certain features are more polished on Forza imo (please don't shoot me for saying this) the gameplay is not a patch on GT5 and that's what really counts! The handling of the cars is superb, I have played around with the settings while completing my B license and minor tweaks in the ABS and traction control can make big differences!

Game Graphics:

The graphics for me are a mixed bag! Some cars and tracks look amazing but there are others that look pretty bad imo. Lighting looks fantastic and premium cars also although I'm not overly impressed with the cockpit view on any of the premium cars I have tried.

Karting:

This was probably my favorite aspect from my 4hr stint last night, really fun and felt excellent to drive especially in the cockpit/driver view.

Rally:
Only did one rally in the snow and thought it was great, again the physics seem pretty good although I have to admit I don't really hammer it around in real life in the snow, so don't know if it's life like!!! Snow effects... hmmm slightly disappointing I would have to say and look very low res.

Online:

Not tried yet!

Overall:

I would say GT5 has the edge on any console race sim I have played including GT2 & 3 which is high praise! I might not be as polished graphically as I was hoping but the driving physics are second to none. There are certain features I think should have been better but I can live with them.

Gran Turismo 5 release date CONFIRMED

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today confirmed that Gran Turismo 5 will go on sale across the UK from Wednesday 24th November 2010.

"Gran Turismo 5 is an ambitious project, with challenges and complexities which have made it our version of the Apollo Space Programme!" commented Kazunori Yamauchi, President of Polyphony Digital Inc.

"When we created the original Gran Turismo back in 1997, we wanted to set a completely new precedent for the racing genre. With the technological leap onto PlayStation 3, our objective with GT5 was to create another great revolution which would not only satisfy our own high expectations, but would meet or even exceed the anticipation of the fans. Satisfying the loyal Gran Turismo followers is at the heart of all of our efforts, which is why it was such a difficult decision to delay the release of the game, and one which we did not take lightly. I can only apologise to everyone for making you wait so long, and I hope that when you try out the wealth of driving experiences available in Gran Turismo 5, you will not be disappointed."

In Gran Turismo 5, you can tackle the world's most famous racetracks, rendered in high definition that is as vivid as the real thing, and get behind the wheels of some of the most legendary cars in motor racing from past to cutting-edge present.

Today, the impressive complete list of over 1,000 in-game cars was unveiled, including the Lamborghini Murciélago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, the Lexus LFA and the McLaren MP4-12C. The full track list was also revealed, which will see players going head to head on famous legacy circuits such as Autumn Ring, Deep Forest Raceway and the Grand Valley Speedway, plus renowned real-life circuits such as Nurburgring and the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

World Exclusive Developer Interview Patton's Campaign Confirmed for Playstation 3

Playstation Online gets into the WW2 trenches to quiz Daniel Parente about the development and future of Legends of War (LoW).

Enigma Software Productions are based in Spain.

How long has Enigma been working as a games developer and what are your goals now?

Enigma SP started 15 years ago and since then we have developed many titles, most of them for PC, in different genres: action, RPG, sports, edutainment, simulation… but above all we have specialized in strategy, thats the genre in which we have more experience and we feel stronger. Our main worry in our titles is to bring as much innovation and quality as we can.

A couple of years ago we decided that we needed to move to multiplatform development, and we thought that there was a gap to be filled in the market for high-quality strategy games. Our challenge is now to consolidate the company in the consoles market and offer what we believe players are looking for with limited options.

Is this the first project you've undertaken for the PSP?

Yes, and most likely it won’t be the last one. We are pleased with the experience.

It is a machine with many possibilities, and from our point of view it’s still little exploited, at least in this genre. We have tried to squeeze it to the maximum, and we think that we have been successful, as a lot of people and companies, didn’t think it was possible. Even our technology provider is amazed by the result.

Who's idea was it to bring Patton's Campaign to the PSP when there are other consoles with higher profiles?

The decision was taken after asking ourselves the biggest question a game developer needs to do after finishing a game: And now what? After a brief bit of market research. We realized that there was a lack of good strategy games for the consoles, and the PSP in particular. Since we love strategy games and the World War II, and we just finished “WarLeaders: Clash of Nations”, we decided that we could continue through this road, implementing some of the ideas that we were not able to develop in the PC game. We decided then to explore the idea of focusing our games into legendary military leaders, and Patton was the first one to come to our minds.

The PSP was selected to be the first one, because development times are shorter and costs are lower. It was also the toughest console, as the limitations are higher. Now, we are in the process of porting the game to the remaining consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii) and off course the PC

How long has the game been in development? I've been following and waiting for news over the last two years, was it much longer than that?

The production of the game has taken around 18 months, before that there were a few more months for the pre-production, and a couple more since we submitted the game to Sony until it was released. The game has a lot of content and features, and our QA process was very exigent (although we were able to pass very fast)

Having now played the game I'm very impressed with what you've managed to do on the PSP, how difficult was it to get Legends of War up and running?

We are very pleased with your opinion about the game. One of the major concerns when developing a strategy game are precisely the controls, even more when you are developing games for consoles. We were very confident that we would manage to make the controls simple and effective for the PSP even for a complex strategy game like LoW.

As usual the main problems were the memory limitations and performance.

The graphics are in fact some of the best I've seen on the PSP with no slowdown or other problems developers seem to face on the small platform, how much of the PSPs power was used?

We already had many of the assets included in this game from our previously release “War Leaders: Clash of Nations”. Adapting all these assets to the PSP limited memory and power was a hard work since we wanted to keep the original quality of the assets and all the functionality we had in mind.

We've squeezed the PSP; we have used even the last byte of memory available. This became a problem because we had memory issues quite often during the development, even when doing small changes.

The PSP has 32 Mb of memory of which we have only had 15 Mb available for all the game (only 7Mb for graphics). By the way, we have worked with Vicious Engine.

I've only just had 2 hours of gameplay, that I must say is very polished, what games inspired you to develop this PSP title?

Many games have inspired LoW, but I must say that our major reference has been "Warhammer 40,000: Squad Command" for PSP. We have adopted the characteristics that we liked most, but that was not enough. Our goal was to improve the weaker parts, for example the camera or the depth of the game. From our point of view, long-term Warhammer becomes monotonous and short, it does not happen in LoW, which is longer and varied.

On showing the game to my Son he said it looked just like, "Company of Heroes on PC". Very high praise indeed. Was it your intention to give PSP owners a 'Company of Heroes' type game for there handheld?

Yes, we are proud to have our game to be considered as a PSP version of “Company of Heroes”, it is a great game. We always try to play as many games as possible for every new project and pick up ideas from all of them, and of course we add many of our own ideas.

Of the 50+ hours game play, what is your favorite mission?

It is difficult to choose, especially for us… ;)

Personally, the team loves the infiltration missions and the latest missions in Berlin.

Do you have any plans for DLC? (Downloadable Content)

We are determined to expand Legends of War saga with new titles and 'minis'. We think it’s an interesting format and there is lack of titles to satisfy all kind of players. Tactical titles are scarce, for example. We want to do thematic 'minis', for example a small campaign with infiltration missions.

How has Sony got involved in the project? Have they had any input or are your developers just good with the PSP?

Unfortunately Sony didn’t get involved as much as we had expected. They gave us some inputs during the pre-production stage of the game and they are helping us with the promotion of the game now.

I've seen many WW2 movies and have my own personal favorites. What movies have inspired you for some missions in the game?

For us, the most outstanding reference has been "Saving Private Ryan" (1998), and the series "Band of Brothers" (2001) and of course "Patton" (1970). We have also had several books on Patton and the Third Army as a reference.

I understand that you are trying to bring Legends of War to the shop shelves on UMD. Have you had any more news on that yet?

We are currently in contact with some publishers to ship the game in UMD, if we get an agreement with any of them, we will do it by sure.

Do you have any plans for your next game? Will we see another chapter in the Legends of War games on the PSP?

We have quite lot ideas right now and our next move is porting the game to PS3, Xbox 360, PC and may be Wii. If users enjoy the game we have already thought about some other titles for the ‘Legends of War’ saga. For the time being our idea is to continue developing the game also for PSP.

We want to make new titles in the series based on the World War II, for instance the wanderings of General Rommel in Africa or Zhukov leading the Red Army on the Russian front... without excluding other periods, as the campaign of Julius Caesar in Gaul. Always with famous war characters, ‘legends of the war’, in the most important conflicts of humankind.

Have you had the PSP2 development kits yet yourselves or do you want to stick with PSP for now?

Once we have more information about the future PSP2 we will see if it makes sense to migrate the game to the new platform. We are a small development studio andwe don’t have devkits for PSP2 yet. We are in contact with Sony about this.

I have read that you plan to bring Legends of War: Patton's Campaign to the Playstation 3 at some point. Can you give us any exclusive news on how development is going and will it have online play?

We expect to have a technical prototype of the PS3 version of the game by mid-November as to be officially shown to publishers during the GC Lyon. We are now using a new version of Vicious Engine compatible with PS3. We are currently are in the process of porting all the assets, ensuring they have quality enough for a console like PS3, and evaluating all the PS3 can give us in terms of memory and power. The user should expect a much higher quality in this platform as the PS3 gives us much more possibilities. I think that if people were surprised with the quality achieved in the PSP, they will be even more impressed by the game on the PS3 and Xbox360.

Thank you for your time and I wish you every success with the launch of the game.

We are the ones that need to thank you for your interest in the game, and for being a fan of the game during the last months. We develop our games for people like you and your readers, and we are very pleased to see your enthusiasm about the game and our work. People interested in knowing more about the game will be able to find some more information about us in our Web page: http://www.enigmasp.com/

Playstation Online will bring you first Exclusive news as soon as we get it on the Playstation 3 version of the game. If they are thinking about Wii then we can only hope that the game will support Playstation Move.

PSP2 a near PS3 in your hands?

The existence of the device was confirmed recently when a Mortal Kombat dev said that Sony were sending units out for feedback. But what will it have ?

Mini HDMI out? Blu Ray Micro? 1080p HD screen? All games to have Trophy support? Phone? Internet? All PS3 games via remote play? PSN sign in over PSP2-PS3 when ever your by a hot spot?

Just some of the things to chew over as next year gets closer. One thing for sure is Sony need this quick. They need everything the PSP can do. PS2 games out of the box from day one. Just think of a launch with every PS2 game as a starting line up.

Good times.

Legends of War: Patton's Campaign Review

PSP fights its last stand in this brilliant World War 2 based RTS that would hold its head high even on an over saturated PC market.

It’s no secret that despite 60 Million sold worldwide the Playstation Portable has very few games gracing the little power house. Of late games have been few and far between, at least in the UK.

Two years ago I saw some screens of a WW2 shooter that at first glance looked like the fantastic Company of Heroes on PC. It also sounded like that game also in the game play department. To say as an older gamer with a passion for WW2 and all its history I was excited is an understatement. I lost track of the game with nothing seen of it until and new trailer was released last week. The new trailer brought those screenshots to life. How have they made such a great job on the PSP? Read on.

The main shock after doing a little digging and chatting to the developer was the news that the game was due out yesterday (20th October) exclusively on the Playstation Store. After talking to the developer the news is they are trying to secure a publishing deal to bring it to store shelves on UMD. If Sony doesn’t snap this game up themselves they will be missing out on what is one of the PSPs best games to date.

Tactical shooters of this kind just don’t lend themselves to handheld consoles, sure we’ve had Advance Wars, Field Commander and various turn based RPGs but nothing that feels right at home next to the best World War 2 RTS, Company of Heroes. Not only is the AI ruthless and punish you for sloppy planning on top of that you are treated to some of the finest graphics that stand tall next to the best PSP games out there.

On starting the game you are shown a slick intro movie then taken to the main menu where you can choose from Campaign, Multiplayer, Settings or Help with tips on how to play and a full Tutorial Mission, you play this mission the first time you play the game, don’t skip it as you will need help to get to grips with the game. You have three save slots so you can keep three games going or someone else can play without using your save on the same PSP. When you start you have an overview of a map of Europe showing your path to Berlin. Different Operations are divided into missions performing different types of game play from full out force to stealth missions, defence and escort missions. It’s all done from the usual top down view that is associated with many games of this type.

First of all you need to apply Patton’s skills, they range from Offensive Capabilities to charisma all improving on your team’s skill in battle. Next choose your units, you unlock more after you progress. You can purchase more units using prestige points gained by completing missions, more points for a clean sweep etc. You choose who you want to take into battle; this is where the RPG elements start to come into play. Each unit, man or vehicle are awarded EXP points in battle so building up a good set of units is essential as if you lose a man he’s gone for good. If a unit is injured you can patch him up before the next battle.

Now it’s time to head into action and this is where Patton’s Campaign starts to really shine. Controls. This is where a game like this can just fall flat. Luckily the controls are tight and very responsive. The analogue nub moves the camera in a fixed position all over the battlefield holding L1 locks the camera so you can turn it 360 degrees and zooms in and out while holding R1 again moves the camera 360 degrees but also tilts the camera up and down for a side view or overhead view. Tapping R1 or L1 selects your unit. Once selected you use the d-pad to select where you want the unit to move to, you then press X and off he goes. If you clear the Fog of War enough to see the Germans you can take a shot or throw a grenade by pressing triangle after lining up with the d-pad. It sounds complex but in no time at all you’ll be running about ducking and diving. Units can crouch behind walls, pick up health, ammo and later medics, engineers all join the fight to help out. Tanks, oh yes tanks are a joy to take into the battle but don’t get to cocky as the Germans are smart enough to out flank you and take you out with a well placed bazooka round to the petrol tanks. Once you’ve completed your objectives you are scored on your performance with Prestige and Patton’s Skills Points.

With everything going on you’d expect the graphics to take a hit. Not here. Without a doubt Legends of War is one of the best looking games to grace Sonys handheld. The first time you start playing you’ll be amazed by all the detail in the game. Wood sheds, burning buildings with fire and smoke bellowing from blown out roofs and windows. Birds flying past the camera as you pan it around. Farmer’s tractors, trees, cars, brick set streets. It really is a sight to behold. Most games that have any kind of draw distance, Monster Hunter being an exception, has fogging. Not here. The first time you blow up a tank and see debris fly through the air in a boom of black smoke with red ash as it falls leaving a huge crater you will smile a huge smile in the knowing that the developers have really created something very special on the PSP.

Multiplayer can be played with 2 players choosing units from a full stock. I’ve yet to try over ad-hoc party yet but as soon as we have I’ll update the review.

I’m playing the game on Rookie but hardened players needn’t worry as there are also some hardcore settings to give you a real test of skill and wit.

I know I’ve said at the start of the review I’m into the history of WW2 and I have visited the beaches of Normandy and yes I may get more excited than others for this game but if you choose not to give this a go it would be a great shame. It’s got everything you’d want and more for a handheld game. Weather you hold out for the UMD or if you’re a PSPGo owner needing a great game to make it worth your purchase look no further than Legends Of War:Patton’s Campaign.

Medal Of Honor sells 1.5 Million in 5 days

New Clean Sweep multiplayer mode to be available to Online Pass holders on Xbox 360 and PS3 November 2, no mention of PC release plans.

With the NPD Group clamping down on its sales figures, it's now up to publishers to tell the public how their games are selling. Electronic Arts rose to that task today, announcing that the recently released first-person shooter Medal of Honor has sold through more than 1.5 million copies worldwide in its first five days on sale.

The game sold well in the UK, topping the Gfk-ChartTrack list in its first two days on shelves. It also caused a bit of controversy in the country when UK defence secretary Liam Fox called for a ban on the title because it would let gamers play as Taliban soldiers in multiplayer. Outrage along those lines was part of the reason EA gave when it renamed the faction in the multiplayer mode as simply the "Opposing Force."

In addition to the sales figures, EA detailed new benefits for the game's Online Pass holders. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gamers who purchased the game new (or bought it used and paid the $10 fee for an Online Pass) will be able to download a new Clean Sweep multiplayer mode starting November 2. EA described Clean Sweep as a team-based elimination mode that will be playable on two all-new maps (Bagram Hangar and Kyber Caves) and two redesigned maps (Diwagal Camp and Kabul City Ruins).

It is not clear if the Clean Sweep mode will be made available to owners of the PC version of Medal of Honor. As of press time, EA representatives had not returned a request for clarification.

The first installment in the series not to be set during World War II, Medal of Honor follows a group of elite commandos called Tier 1 Operators during operations behind enemy lines in Afghanistan.

Medal Of Honor 2010/Frontline Reviews

 Medal Of Honor 2010

Medal of Honor has been set in World War Two for over 10 years when it started life on the very first Playstation. That game won awards and went on to being one of, if not the best FPS on the Playstation.

So 10 years on and EA move into the Modern era of shooting, was it a wise move or have EA shot themselves in the foot?

It's hard to write a review on a game that boasts such realism, a game that makes you care about what you are doing, a game that stirs emotion in you. Emotion? It’s a First Person Shooter, what are you on about?

Yes it is a FPS, a short one at that it's based in Afghanistan based on events that American, and British troops have to face and it all kicks off at the start and doesn't let up until the end. The chopper on-rails section is the best of its type that I've played in any game before. On-rails parts in the past have felt like breaks in the play to give you a rest, not here. It's so realistic with chitter chatter over the mics with you taking up the front gunner seat. In parts you have to blink to remember you're playing a game

Medal Of Honor doesn't glorify the conflict, instead it drives home what problems the troops face and I wish the newspapers and press would play games before making stupid statements about what we should play or why we shouldn't. The game shows the courage and comradeship that troops show each other and the "Leave no man behind" element is evident throughout.

Game play sees more stealth than I've seen in any other FPS with you being rewarded for not "going hot". I wish I could talk more about the game but I will NOT spoil anything for other players only saying that taking cover is key.

The graphics are stellar throughout with some jaw dropping moments as sunlight glints through dust and trees, moonlit missions are incredible.
What MOH does so well is make you feel very vulnerable in situations that you find yourself in where no matter how high tech you may think you are over the rest of the world, when it comes down to numbers you are just as vulnerable as everyone else.

Overall EA has crafted a very enjoyable game that totally overshadows the other "Modern" shooter in every way. No mindless killing here.
EA need to build on a great start but not by bringing out cheap shots of DLC that cost an arm and a leg. Play it fair EA and remember you are up against a large cash cow so give us some FREE DLC to keep us on your side of the modern war fence.

Medal Of Honor Frontline Remastered

Playstation 3 owners that have bought the new Medal Of Honor may have got a surprise when unboxing there new game, a copy of the Playstation 2 classic is included free of charge as a PS3 exclusive. Is it worth retreading the sandy Omaha Beaches or is it stuck in the mud?

Medal Of Honor Frontline was the first Playstation 2 game to showcase what the PS2 was capable of. Frontline won awards and had some stellar reviews with a few 10/10's and 5/5 scores with the opening level on the Normandy coast blowing gamers away with screams, explosions and gunfire as you tried to run up Omaha beach to take a foothold in what spanned out to be of the most varied shooters of last gen.

So what's changed? Well nothing if you read Eurogamers in depth probing of the game. Eurogamer, one of the biggest games websites on the net, have you played the first game?

On booting up Frontline on PS2 or the Xbox, I own both, the first thing you see is a very muddy Higgins boat full of very blurry GI's on their way to hell.
What you are now greeted with is a totally different look with a re-done sea with lighting effects casting off the sea and off the now far sharper looking GI's heading to a far better looking Omaha Beach. As you stand and look at your doomed team of troops you can see the work that EA has done to give Frontline the polish it deserves. You can clearly read text on the uniforms and lifejackets, the boat floor now has a bottom to it instead of a blurred blue look you can see how it's made. Light and shadows are now strong cast over the GIs and beach obstacles. One of the big changes to the game as far as game play goes is the iron sights. Like most FPS games iron sights is a must and now Frontline has it. What this in fact does is make the game feel fresh as I've only ever played this game shooting from the hip.

The lighting and shadows are evident throughout every level but what stands out most of all for me is the sharp AI that makes you forget your playing and near 9 year old game. They will move in and out of cover, throw grenades back at you, kick them away and even dive on them to save their chums from taking damage, good old Germans.
Frontlines levels have you scaling huge bridges, storming towns, fields, beaches and back streets in Holland, riding a mine cart and taking out antiaircraft spotter lights.
Frontline is regarded by many as the best Medal Of Honor and taking away the graphics and flash of the new game, Frontline still has the edge. It maybe old but it has balls; you even get a trophy for shooting twenty Germans in the balls.

Call Of Duty (1), Frontline and Brothers In Arms are my most played WW2 shooters. Eurogamer are so off with what they say about the re-make. EA have done a great job with an old game and veteran WW2 shooters need to boot up for a nostalgic blast on Frontline that has never looked better. Arnhem Nights that was hampered by frame rate problems is now as smooth as a nut. This maybe the last time EA put out a shooter set in WW2 on PS3, I hope not but give it a go, after all it was free and hell, you will enjoy it.

Pro Evo 2011 Review

 Gameplay:

Easily the jewel in the PES crown, along with Master League. Every goal feels satisfying and you'll often find yourself celebrating along with the players! The AI is tough on top player and the way that you organise your team tactically is paramount to how you will perform on the pitch.

Sound:

Much improved. The commentary team has been improved following the addition of Jim Beglin. The commentators now talk specifically about stadia, club rivalries, player history etc. The most pleasing feature for me is the fact that the commenatators will now mention player/team names in relation to what's happening on the pitch - e.g. "and Nani shoots!". In addition, a stadium announcer has been added. He will often mention the crowd attendance, player substitutions, stoppage time etc.

Graphics:

Konami have improved the graphics year upon year whilst on the PS3. This years iteration includes a big imrpovement graphically over PES10. The player animations have been improved immeasurably on the whole. The physics are realistic, player collisions wonderful and the highlights now give a sense of fast flowing action with the inclusion of motion blur.

Presentation:

The menus have been totally revamped to look sheek and quick. The team management screen is a huge change to the previous 10 or so PES games, and as such will require getting used to. The in-game music is actually quite good, although this can be replaced with music from the hard drive.

Modes:

The new Master League Online mode looks really promising so far. It sees the player start with the default players (Castolo, Minanda, Espimas et al). You then gain money by playing matches against other opponents - gaining more money depending on the result of the game. You then have to spend this money wisely in order to improve your team.

Licensing:

The implimentation of the UEFA Champions League licencse is back and better than ever. The pre-match cutscene makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up...I never skip a Champs League intro now! Copa Liberatadores has been added, in addition to the Super Cup.

Editing:

Editing (including the allowance of "prequal" data) is top notch - all kits can be made convincingly. The new stadium creation mode allows the user to create a variety of different stadiums. Although it appears rather simplistic at first, it does allow for many different variations of stadiums to be created. Each team can be assigned a different stadium, which can be used in all offline modes. A competition creator/editor has also been added. This allows the user to create/edit a competition, as well as setting the logo (added to the shirts), entrance music etc. A nice touch.

Postives:

- Graphics/Animations

- Improved in-game atmosphere

- Passing/Shooting mechanics

- The flow of each game is clearly affected by the teams playing/game plan

- Edit mode is brilliant

Negatives:

- No player growth when playing Master League Online

- People exploiting Master League Online mode for more money

- Although the commentary is improved it's still a little repetitive at times

Overall:

9/10

A Youtube video has hit the net showing the first 10 min's of MOH Frontline in HD.

Not only has it had some polish but the graphics have been updated. It looks like Frontline has had the makeover it truly deserves.

The first thing that hits you is the sea and gunfire from the ships in the background.

I have played Frontline to death and ADS (Aim Down Sight) has now been added to Frontline.

WRC FIA World Rally Championship Demo Review

The concept of WRC is pretty boring for a fun game. You race over long distances on your own with no opponents in site. Then repeat 20 or so times. However what has made previous games so exciting is the sense of danger you got when tearing through the forest, mere centimetres from disaster. Then there’s the massive thrill you get as you clear the section and it all starts again.

There hasn’t been an official WRC game for a long time and never on a next generation console. DIRT has provided rally fans with there fix but it just isn’t the same without the official cars, tracks and teams. So does this game fill the void?

Well watching the intro video as the demo loads fills you with horror. Have they released the PS2 demo onto the PS3? Actually the graphics look pretty close to the PSP version which came out 5 years ago. Fortunately this video isn’t taken from the game your actually playing who knows why they thought it was a good idea to include this video as you wait to get started.

You have two tracks in the demo one in the sands of Jordan and another in the gravel of Finland. The area immediately around you doesn’t look too bad, it’s not ground breaking but it’s acceptable. However off in the distance things deteriorate quickly, the textures in front of you are virtually non existent and turn into a blur.

The graphics as you smash your car to pieces are pretty spectacular though the windscreen deteriorates with cracks and you can see the side windows and door panels start to cave in as you smash them into rocks and barriers.

The graphics don’t create any sense of speed or drama, you can only really feel the speed at 180kmh + any less than that you have idea how fast you’re going and you don’t feel the sense of danger that should be there as your body tells you this is insane slow down.

There is one neat effect I do want to mention though ands that’s how the bonnet jumps up and blocks your view as you jump over hills in the road after you damage it, this really reminded me of watching WRC on TV.

I had one of the most spectacular crashes I’ve ever experienced in a rally game during the demo where I felt every roll and smash into the ground coming off of a high speed section where I didn’t slow down fast enough and saw the car break down with more cracks appearing on the windscreen and side windows with every roll.

However although the game claims to have damage I’ve had some serious crashes and the handling of the car hasn’t changed at all despite the damage indicator glowing red and yellow.

And this is a major problem with the game; it’s a racing game with incredibly poor driving physics. The car feels as if it’s stuck to the gravel, when I’m tearing along a gravel road at 100+ mph it should be twitchy as my car just skims the road bouncing up and down over the uneven surface but it doesn’t it feels as heavy as crawling around at 10mph.

Going round corners the car does slide sometimes but the wheels don’t slip on the road as you accelerate out of the corners and it just doesn’t feel right. F1 2010 is slippier than this game.

Mostly though you will go round corners with the car glued to the road and having perfect traction.

The sound of the cars is odd its more of a hum which gets slightly louder as you move up through the revs, it really sounds nothing like a car I’ve ever heard, add to this the co driver who whispers instructions and I’m really confused about what the sound department was thinking when they did there part.

It’s a real shame that the driving physics are so poor as this game is MASSIVE. It has all the tracks, cars and levels like WRC-J and WRC-P, online multiplayer and through car set up options. I wont be buying this game when it comes out and I doubt other many people will with F1 2010 just out and GT5 coming soon with its own rally mode.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light Demo Review

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light certainly isn’t Tomb Raider it’s a radically different game designed for release through PSN. However this doesn’t mean that it’s a bad game, it’s actually a really solid PSN release.

The first thing you notice is how the cameras nearly straight above you so it plays almost as a top down game. But because its not 90 degrees above you it’s a lot more in depth than a regular top down game from the past. It has a collection of regular adventure game elements like grapple hooks, climbing and jumping.

At first I was upset as the game doesn’t really push your adventure skills too hard. It’s fairly obvious what you have to do to progress and there’s not much chance of missing the critical ledges and falling to your death. But there are side challenges where like normal Tomb Raider games you have to really stop think and look around to figure out how to use your environment to reach a certain part of the level and get a bonus.

There is also a RPG element where you collect artefacts which give you bonuses such as improved defence and attack power or relics which give you a burst of power after you fill a meter up.

Shooting uses the right stick to aim and R2 to unleash your weapon. There’s a solid auto aim system which means you aren’t faffing about trying to precisely aim at a manic warrior trying to destroy you.

There’s a large collection of challenges in each level that you can complete for bonuses such as the usual collect 10 red skulls or reach a certain number of points which you get for killing enemies or collecting orbs. Which looks like it will really add more life to game as you come back to try and polish off all of the objectives.

This is also the first Lara Croft game to include co op and if you do so you must work together to utilise both players weapons and tools to work through challenges on the level that you previously solved on your own in the single player.

Graphically it is bordering towards cartoonish rather than cutting edge realism but this isn’t a dig at the game as it’s incredibly well done and the details throughout the levels are incredible as are the character models.

The levels have incredibly depth as you go through them you can see the lower levels and where you’ve been previously in incredible detail. The levels also have an incredible atmosphere thanks to the little touches like flickering lights and shadows being cast from the surroundings buildings.

The game also has some fantastic art work on the menus and loading screens.

As I’m sure you’ve gathered by now I really like this game and at £9.99 on the Playstation store its well worth getting if you like the demo.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West Demo Review

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is like Uncharted from 10 years ago. It’s not a terribly bad game it’s just dated and really pales in comparison to similar games like Uncharted.

You start off running through a series of rooms pressing X to jump over gaps in an attempt to make it off a space ship which is falling apart. This is where you start to notice the problems. It’s near (read is) impossible to actually fail at the jumping around, clearing obstacles and climbing. You just point the right analogue stick close to where you want to go and press X. You will always end up on the next ledge / hand hold and can continue doing this until you reach where you need to go.

There’s a part in it just like Uncharted 2 where you have to climb up a broken wall, it took me three or four attempts to figure it out in Uncharted and I actually had to engage my brain. But in Enslaved I just pointed the analogue stick upwards and hammered X.

Or there’s a part where you must climb the side of the space ship before it hits a high rise building and you die. Fortunately for you you’re unlikely to die as you just point up and hammer X a lot until your clear of the building.

Also annoyingly like in Army of Two the 40th Day ledges and hand holds that you need to grab onto shine like a Christmas tree so it really requires no thought, you can just mindlessly wonder through the game.

Combat is basic similar to the system in Dynasty Warriors. You have a sword / stick like weapon and tap different buttons to hit the bad guys in various ways. Square is a basic attack, while triangle is a power attack. Then various combinations do other things. It’s not normally my thing to mindlessly bash buttons but I did find it slightly therapeutic to hammer the buttons and destroy some robots.

Graphically, it’s not too great either. The anti aliasing is poor, flames / fires look poor and no where near realistic. There are some nice lighting effects in some parts where it streams through a window but there are also areas where its way over exposed and just makes part of the levels look white.

Cut scenes aren’t much better either, there’s one where a load of explosions are going off and it really highlights just how poor the graphics are as they look flat and amateurish.

As your probably gathered overall this isn’t a game worth buying which is actually a shame as based on the video at the end it looks like there’s some interesting parts of the game but the basic combat and simplistic exploring system makes it feel outdated and not a lot of fun to play.

Moving MAG...nificently!

Motion gaming is a strenuous thing.

Pulled muscles, shattered chandeliers and smashed windows are just two things that go hand in hand with flapping about in my front room.

Do I like it?

Well yes, sort of and that is because of the technology involved with the new Move controllers and sports champions.

But what I really want is a good old adult game, when I say adult game I’m not talking about a porn game, I'm more talking, "Hardcore", hardcore is the new rock and roll.

It's what is said when trying to get the likes of me involved in the motion gaming era. I tried the Wii and loved Brothers in Arms but it all fell apart with sloppy controls, bang, bang, bang.............MAG just knocked on the door.

Sony's massive action game is the first FPS to try out the brand new Move controllers, in fact this is what I've been waiting for, the chance to test a shooter. Will it replicate a mouse and keyboard set up?

The first thing I did was strap my Move controller into the new shiny Gun add-on from Amazon, boot up training and run off shouting, it works ok, press triangle to crouch, erm how can I do that with the Move in my gun you ask? Well just press it on the DS3, fumble, controller on the floor.

If you want to play MAG with a shooter add-on you need the Nav controller. Fact. Out comes the Move controller and I try again. My god it's fast. I took the look speed down to 30, yes 30 out of 100 and it's still VERY fast. MAG not only works with Move it's faster than I'd ever thought it could be. Fantastic stuff.

I finished my first game on MAG in 4th place. Take into account that it was my first go on the new map and with a new feel to the game I'd have to say Move worked very well. I’m really looking forward to getting used to it.

Your thumb uses the face buttons on the top of the Move and the DS3 does the running and ADS.

I think people will be shocked at how good Move feels with MAG. Now when's that Assault Rifle add-on coming out?

Pro Evo 2011 Demo Review

Pro evolution 2011 is a great recreation of the beautiful game, the chances of you sprinting down the pitch dodging in and out of players before placing the ball in the top corner in one fluid movement are slim really slim.

You have to work hard to break down the opposition, really hard. There’s no tapping X and having your team mate run onto the ball. You need to point in the right direction and apply just enough power or the ball will end up in no mans land or way past your intended target.

Crossing into the box feels solid. That’s the only way I can think to describe it just feels right when you cross into the box. You can really place the ball accurately and set up players into the box to head the ball in or volley it into the back of the net.

Through balls can be precisely controlled, hold triangle down for longer to put more pace on the ball and have a quicker player beat the defence and run onto it.

Throw Ins can be placed anywhere (within the range of human throwing) so that players can move around to get the ball if your being marked closely.

You really do feel great when you finally score a goal as you know you’ve had to work for it. You punch the air in delight as your plan to stretch the defence by playing the ball wide followed by precisely dropping the ball at your team mates feet with a stunning cross into the box finally finished by a solid strike into the back net comes together and after 89 minutes of trying (and crying) you finally score a goal.

Yes it really is this hard and rewarding but strangely you keep coming back for more as you really can’t let this game beat you. It’s tough but fair which is what makes it so fun to play.

Graphically the cut scenes are pretty nice, even if the in game graphics are average. The styling on the menus and in game indicators like shot power are really love it or hate it. It’s hard to describe what there like but there pretty in your face and colourful almost like cartoonish. But you can always tell how much power your applying which is a plus.

The stadium lighting effects are stunning as are the recreations of the actual stadiums themselves, but to be fair to FIFA 11 which I criticised yesterday the crowd doesn’t look too great however it does have extra touches like TV crews, photographers and marshals.

A fantastic feature is the camera; this really is a revolutionary feature. Instead of being fixed at a certain distance it moves dynamically mimicking the views you’d see on TV and you become incredibly immersed in the game and it really helps with being able to see where your team mates are around the pitch.

The advantage Pro Evo has over FIFA is having the non league teams and lots of abstract international leagues which is great if you support a team in the lower or international leagues but not having the official premier league is a big downside.

Unlike FIFA Pro Evo doesn’t even attempt to have commentators which is probably a good idea considering how FIFA has never managed to nail it and its renown for being bad.

This is a football game, and so yes you could pick up an older version cheaper. I haven’t played a Pro Evo game for a long time so I can’t compare it to last years version but I can tell you that this is a fantastic football game worth trying if you can.

FIFA 11 Demo Review

How many sports can you think off that have had the fundamentals radically changed? You can’t think of any? Neither can I and this presents an obvious problem when you create sports games, the actual sports don’t evolve much, ever. Yes the people involved change and I’m sure the developers would love to offer to update your data for just £24.99 but seriously whose going to pay that?

Despite the game of football not changing significantly EA continue to release a new version of FIFA each year.

This years FIFA 11 user interface looks similar to previous versions with the football pitch to practice in before entering the menus and the usual list of game modes with a few new additions

The gameplay feels similar to last year’s game; it’s quick with lots of movement. Shooting, through balls and passes are all the same, it’s still near impossible to cross the ball accurately and it’s nothing not like any football match I’ve ever seen. Maybe it’s because I support Coventry City but I’ve never seen so many shots of targets happen so quickly during a match. Or players make such light work of the oppositions defence.

The penalty taking system has been revamped you now have to stop a slider in the green zone before setting the power and taking the shot. This is tough and takes a lot of getting used to. It also feels like the shot direction detection is more sensitive but this may just be because I wasn’t nailing the slider right in the green zone.

I see why they updated the penalty taking as it was pretty tough to miss the goal before but now it’s pretty tough to score a goal, this doesn’t really mimic real life and it’s gone too far in my opinion. It should be on a sliding scale of difficultly where in make or break situations like a penalty to seal the game the bar moves more quickly across the screen but in lower pressure situations it reverts to the old system or the bar moves so slowly it’s near impossible to miss the green zone

There is also a new game mode called ‘Be a Pro: Goalkeeper’ where believe it or not you play as the goal keeper. This isn’t unlocked in the demo which doesn’t inspire confidence in this game mode as its one of the only new features in a FIFA game for a long time. If you sit and think about it though how much fun can it be to stand there for the whole game and dive in the wrong direction 90% of the time?

Graphically its best described as ‘meh’. Its not particularly bad or great, everything looks as you would expect for a new PS3 game the interface design is the same as are the menus, players and pitches. The crowds at the stadiums are best described as ‘jaggeedy’ although I’m not sure that’s a real word.

The sounds by which I mean the commentators are as usual amusing at best and boring most of the time. I really don’t think they’ve ever changed since FIFA 1901 they continually repeat the same phrases when a card is handed out or offside awarded my favourite quote? “The referee starts the game with a kick off” really? Someone took the time to include that in the game.

Although this entire review has been pretty negative I do want to point out that the game is enjoyable to play. The fast pace and constant attempts on goal keep it exciting but it’s not a real recreation of a football match or anything new. Personally I wont be buying this game unless the be a goal keep feature turns out to be amazing or I win the lottery neither which I are likely to happen.

Unless you want the latest team sheets and kits just buy an older version it’s cheaper and you’ll barely notice the difference. Pro Evo 2011 however is a different story look for a review coming soon.

God of War's HD collection of the original and sequel game started this whole kick for reviving classic PlayStation releases and pumping them full of HD-steroids.

Sony sets its crack team of programmers to work fixing the latest jail break

Sony released PS3 firmware version 3.42 yesterday that according to the offical blog:
" [PS3] software update v3.42 that includes additional security features. "

PC World are claiming that this translates to blocking the latest 'exploit' which lets you jailbreak your PS3 so you can run custom software

This little device came to the attention of the world a few weeks ago as it claims to:
" lets you play pirated as well as homemade games on a retail PS3 by converting it into a "debug" unit, a special version of the PS3 used by developers and others to access non-retail versions of games. "

Sony haven't officialy confirmed this but it would make sense they'd want to do this as they've already taken action to get sales of the device blocked

Again also according to PC World other users are saying the update also:
" 'fixed' the PS3's internet browser, noting the "font now seems bold and easier to read while browsing "

The real problem here is that Sony developed a fix for this 'problem' in a few weeks yet they've had years to develop cross game chat and still haven't managed it. Cross game chat would benefit thousands of users this update benefits .... ?

JAW's Oddworld remake a PSN exclusive

Just Add Water's Oddworld game is a downloadable PlayStation Network-exclusive enhanced remake of 2005's Stranger's Wrath.

Due out next Easter, it enhances the original Xbox game with 720p visuals, more detailed characters, normal mapping and self-shadowing, re-mastered dialogue, support for PlayStation Move and additional bonus material yet to be revealed.

The game marks the series' first appearance on a PlayStation console since 1998's Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus

Since word got out that we been many rumours ut what we're working on," said JAW managing director Stewart Gilray.

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath is the first project in what we believe will be a long and fruitful relationship. Having the chance to update this great title and release it on PS3 is just a brilliant opportunity, not least for us, but for the fans too."

JAW's worked closely with Oddworld founders Lorne Lanning and Sherry McKenna, a move the developer says will "ensure the remake is faithful to the original moolah-chasing epic".
