Hey Guys,

It’s been a while but I wanted to write a series on the importance of being a worship leader so this will be one blog of many.

There are several aspects to the job of a worship leader. First, let’s talk about the practical. A worship leader has to pick out songs for the church and learn those songs proficient enough to where he or she is not a distraction on stage. If there is a band then the song list and the songs, preferably the track and the chart, needs to be sent to the band in plenty of time for them to be able to learn the song, or songs, by Sunday, or whenever the service runs.

Go here to read my article on Christian Guitar Lessons.

The structure of the set list is another practical factor. There should be some type of deliberate flow to the service—how many fast songs, and where are they placed; how many slow songs, etc. The flow that always seemed to work well for me is to start fast and rocking at the beginning, to wake people up and get them amp-ed. Then maybe one more like that followed by a medium to slow song. I try to always do one very slow, reflective type song somewhere in the middle. Many people connect with God better in these reflective type songs. I know I do. I love the fast one and even prefer them to some degree, but when it comes to one on one with me and God, the slower, more minor chord songs really get me in a place of reflection on God and the things of God.

I’ll continue this conversation in the next post. Thanks for reading, and I hope you’re well.

-Aaron

When I first read the title of Tim Hughes song, ‘Jesus Saves’, it reminded me of street preaching crews who also carry pretty offensive signs like, “God Hates Fags!”—I’m not going to get into how wrong that is, what a bad message that sends to unbelievers and to the gay community and how much it misrepresents Jesus, who I believe is God, but I will say that the title of the song turned me off at first. It seemed like a dated phrase that was associated with negative memories for me.

However, I love Tim Hughes and think he’s one of the greatest songwriters of all the popular worship leaders out there right now, with David Crowder as a close second. So, of course, I gave the song a chance, and I loved it! It’s got a great energy to it, along with a cool riff, good melodies and solid lyrics. Well done, Mr. Hughes, once again.

If you have the luxury of playing with a band, leading a worship team, this is a great one to perform as it is on the track. It rocks. My pastor said to me, after we played it for the first time on Sunday morning, “Is that punk rock?” Haha! No, it’s not. But it is plenty rock for a worship song. If you are only playing the song on acoustic, by yourself or in front of a small group of people, the songs translates just as well. And there is a little riff that goes with the verse that keeps is more interesting than the standard down-down-up-up-down-up strum pattern.

Well, if you have the time, learn and lead and play this one. It’s one of the good ones, especially if you need to liven up the energy, which, as you may know, is what I’ve been trying to do at my church recently. The song has a few 2’s (C2) and 7ths (Am7, Dm7) and a slash chord (G/B), but those chords aren’t actually too difficult once you take a look at them. Give it a try. You can do it!

Members can login now and get the video lesson of myself teaching you how to play this song.

Not a member? Get started today with our Christian Guitar Lessons where you will learn to play guitar along with the worship songs you hear every Sunday!

Here is a cool live version of the song by Tim Hughes, himself:

I’ve noticed something recently that I’ve known to be true for a long time but haven’t always taken advantage of (I know; I’m not supposed to end a sentence with a preposition, but sometimes it’s too much effort to avoid!). I’ve been making it a point to ask for things I want, even when, especially when, I don’t think I’ll necessarily get what I’m asking for.

I spend my mornings tutoring/teaching a couple of, now, 8th grade, kids. I was just there, originally, for a couple of months to help out and fill in a gap. But then the position opened up for a longer-term position, and I thought I’d like to stick around because I could use the extra cash and I’d really grown to like the kid (I only had one kid back then) I was working with. So, I prayed and asked God for favor when I asked for a raise, and when they asked me to stay, I said I would, but that I’d like a raise. They agreed to a small raise, which was great. I liked being there. About a month or two later another kid joined our ranks, so, I spoke with God again, and, even though only a short period of time had passed, I asked for another, bigger raise, since the job involved more responsibility. What could I lose, right? Well, they gave me another raise—two and a half times bigger than what they had given me the first time.

I was on a roll, so I decided to keep going. I wanted to go back East to meet my girlfriend’s parents over Christmas but also wanted to take this trip to Nashville to write with Nathan Chapman, Taylor Swift’s producer, with Chas. The problem was that I only had one vacation day at the church where I lead worship. I prayed and then asked the paster for another vacation day, and lo and behold, he gave it to me!

These are small things, but they illustrate a larger point. “You do not have, because you do not ask God” (James 4:2). Often times, when we want something, we forget to ask God. We strive and fight and kick and don’t get it, but we never even asked God. Here is why it is important to ask God: God wants us to know that ALL good things come from His hand alone. God is in control; He is sovereign. And when we come to good with our wants and needs, it shows him that we recognize Him as our provider. So, go for it; ask God!

I’d love to hear what you are dealing with or learning from God in your life right now…please feel free to comment below.

In Him,

I’m grateful for bands like Hillsong United that seem to consistently crank out worship songs that are not only thoughtful lyrically but have stellar melodies. Now, I’m not saying all of their stuff is great, but there is a lot that is. And, at the risk of sounding negative, and without pointing any fingers, there are a lot of worship songs out there, music in generally, really (including secular), that are just mediocre at best.

Of course, they still honor God etc., but it’s great when there is a certain magic in a song, melodies that carry it to a new level, lyrics that pierce straight to the heart. I know it’s rare, but these songs do exist, and I feel like “From The Inside Out” is one of those worship songs.

It so poignantly describes human failure and God’s relentless mercy, His patience to forgive, restore and refresh…over and over again. It is also a cry for this mercy and for the very heart of God. Pretty cool stuff. Well, enjoy this song. I know I do.

First of all, this song is still #1 on the Christian music iTunes chart, which is saying something. I realize that anything Chris Tomlin and Matt Redman do (individually or together because they are both amazing writers and worship leaders), especially with the Passion brand backing them, will have first shot at the charts. But, I think this one is very deserving.

‘Our God’ is a really good worship song. The lyrics are simple, but not trite, and the melodies are pretty strong throughout the song. In fact, I feel like the bridge melody tops even the hook, the chorus. Anyway, I’ve been playing this song at my church the past couple of weeks and have had a good response.

If you are not familiar with this song then you are in for a treat! Check out this video…It puts the song to some pretty amazing looking pictures.

Well, I digress. Give this song a listen, and if you’re up for it, learn to play it. I strip it down to it’s essentials, so it should be manageable for any level of player.

Enjoy!

“Blessed Be The Name” is always a go-to worship song when I need something solid in my worship set. People love it and it has an enduring quality where it is just one of those songs that never seems to get old.

Lyrically, it has a pretty tough message: “Blessed be your name on the road marked with suffering…” This truly is Job’s story. I sing it so nonchalantly sometimes, but it really is a tremendous declaration of faith, of God’s sovereignty.

Besides the meaning and the theology in the lyrics, it’s just got great melodies and a simple but strong chord progression. Bravo Matt Redman!

Enjoy this song. I certainly do.

Here’s a video that someone shared with me that is just incredible. It literally made the hairs on my arm stand up as I watched it. The message of the song become so clear. This video was done by a church that I have never visited and includes people I have never met…but one day we will all meet and together we will sing “Blessed By Your Name”!

“Mighty To Save” is a great worship song. I actually didn’t start playing it in my church until about six months ago and had only heard the song, here and there, a couple of times. But now it’s one of my favorite worship songs to play and sing. It’s one of those rare songs that has great melodies in every section of the song, along with solid lyrics to match.

“Mighty To Save” is pretty straight forward to play. There aren’t that many chords, but the progression works well. The only section that is a little tricky is the bridge. Each time the song goes to the F#, it is only briefly, just enough time for an upstroke strum. It’s really more of an accent chords. But because it’s a barre chord, it can be a challenge for some to get to and out of it quickly. Oh, and if you can swing it, it sounds better if you pick the chords in the verse.

If you haven’t heard this song here is a video I found of “Hillsong” playing the song live.

This week I am showing you how to play one of my favorite worship songs. I play this at my church all the time and I feel it’s just a really powerful and well written song. It has a really cool arrangement, interesting chord progressions, and an awesome melody. Not to mention I think the lyrics are excellently written as well.

So I decided to let everyone take a look at this lesson. I hope you enjoy it!

Also, for members, I have a huge surprise coming in the next several days…we are almost done putting the finishing touches on it but keep an eye out because it will be ready for you soon. Also, I’ll have the chord chart available soon for members also (should be in the next day or two).

When I was in college back in Tennessee I became friends with a guy that had the same passion and desire that I had for leading worship and ministering to people. You may have heard of the band “Fee” before or maybe you have not. If you have, you probably know that the lead singer’s name is Steve Fee.

On many occasions I co-led worship with Steve on campus or around our small college town and have always had great respect for Steve and everything he has done over the years. I remember when he got the gig of leading the Passion Tour in our senior year of college (or maybe the year after…) and how exciting it was. Well, fast forward 10 years or so and Steve and his band are doing great, playing all over the world, and writing great worship songs.

And the best part about it, all the success hasn’t changed Steve one bit. He’s still the genuine, awesome, hilarious, and Christ-centered guy he was back when we were leading worship together in a small house with no air conditioning and 100 people jammed in it like sardines.

Here’s an interview with Steve that I think is worth watching…and if you hadn’t heard of him or his music before now you have

This week I’m going to be doing a lot of filming and I’ll be teaching you guys at least one of Steve’s more popular songs so be on the lookout for that in the next couple weeks.

Hey Everyone,
I played this song at my church this past week and it is really just a great worship song. It has become one of my absolute favorite worship songs to date because of it’s simplicity yet it’s profoundness.

Hey Everyone,

I played this song at my church this past week and it is really just a great worship song. It has become one of my absolute favorite worship songs to date because of it’s simplicity yet it’s profoundness.

The song is called “Center” by Charlie Hall and if you haven’t heard it before check out this clip of his band performing it live. The way I show you how to play it may be a little different than the way he is playing it here because I simplified it just a bit to make it easier for you to pickup quickly. When I play this song I use what is called a “3 string capo” or “cut” capo but in this lesson I don’t use it so you can learn it with me.

I also added the song “Oh Happy Day” just to add a little more up tempo song into your collection

Check out the video here then login and go to the worship songs page and you can learn how to play it!

If you aren’t a member yet just either click here or go to the “Membership Sign-Up” button up at the top of the page and you can get started.

And if you don’t know how to play guitar don’t worry…my whole course is designed for beginners and teaches you how to play guitar from the absolute beginner stage.
