We are going to have a blast at theRock Lock-in, and we would love to have your child join us!  Your child is welcome to invite friends along for the night as well.  We will have plenty of leaders to take care of the kiddos, and this will also be a great opportunity for us to continue building deeper relationships with these students! 

The lock-in will commence at approximately 7:00 P.M. Friday night, and end at 8:00 A.M. Saturday morning.  Please pick up your child by 8:00 A.M.

But for the first time ever, we had to renegotiate the rules before we could begin our game. No longer were the household rules simple and customary.

Seems that since we played our last game of Clue, our older daughter, Katie, visited a friend’s home where the family plays the game a little differently ... “where they play with TWO dice!  And sometimes, SOMETIMES, they play without even using the board!  Dad, they just slide the cards from player to player until someone says they’ve won!” 

Huh, how about that?

Every family plays by a unique set of rules. Whether it is bedtime, board games, curfews, chore-charts or driving privileges, each family operates according to a tailored set of expectations.  Two valuable lessons here: 

1)   Our children—whether we like it or not—ARE going to pick up new ideas and new rules from other families.  They just are.  And regardless of whether a child’s is testing a deeply-held, core family value or just sharing a new way to expedite a board game, we parents should be quick listen and probe for clarity. 

2)   There are times in all healthy families when we parents need to be open to new ideas . . . even from our children.  However, there are also times when the parent needs to be the parent, restating—sometimes over and over until we’re blue in the face—our healthy standards and rationale.  We should never shy away from clarifying the house rules. 

We hope this helps you find what you need to know faster and that you can continue to use this blog as a valuable resource with your families.

This week, as I was surfing the internet, I came across this blog post .  It is a very simple post, nothing profound, but as I read it, I was reminded that God chose me to be the parent of my children, what I do as a parent matters, and showing them my attempts to follow Jesus is one of the best gifts I could ever give them. 

I am not perfect. I do mess up more than I get it right. I don't have all the answers, but I can show my kids how much I need Jesus.  And they desperately need me to do that. 

Check it out. Hopefully it will remind you how much you matter and that God picked YOU to parent those special kids living at your house!

• On Jan. 25—Feb. 8 theRock and theRoad will be teaching on the topics of sex, dating and relationships and you need to hear first hand what will be taught and why.
• Take questions from you on the ministry and upcoming teaching.
• Encourage, equip, and partner with you as parents.

No one will have more influence on your child than YOU! We believe that what happens at home is more important than what happens at church. It is our hope that we can partner with you from the very beginning. We want to be your strongest supporters as you raise your child to know what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

To participate in our next event, you must attend a parent orientation at your campus, please click here  to register.  These orientations will be held the week of January 23rd. Cedar Falls will host their next dedication on January 28th at 3:30 pm. Osage and Waterloo will schedule their child dedication at your parent orientation meeting. 

6th - 8th Grade BOYS =  Friday, February 3rd. 

6th - 8th Grade GIRLS = Friday, February 17th. 

Please keep this night open for your students to come have a blast at theRock Lock-in!  We will have plenty of leaders to take care of your kiddos, and this will also be a great night for us to build deeper relationships with them as we jump into 2012!
