Like him, I find that concept to be simplistic and silly and born out of marketing speak, not reality. You see, the mobile telephony market has simply become obsessed with “killers”.

These days, every new smartphone is here to “kill” some other smartphone. Whoever coined the term “iPhone Killer” really needs to be hurt badly with a microwave antenna. At first any phone with a large touchscreen was dubbed an iPhone Killer, then of course the Palm Pre was the first major contender to the iPhone’s throne, next the Moto Cliq, now the Motorola Droid, maybe the Xperia X10 in a couple weeks. The Droid has not only been dubbed an “iPhone Killer”, but a “Pre Killer” and yes, a “Windows Mobile Killer” as well…quite the natural born killer is the Droid.

Or is it? Are any handsets really dying at the hands of these ”killers”, or is it just macho marketing speak? Is the telephony world really so “red of tooth and claw”?

An article over at Cnet questions Windows Mobile’s need in the mobile world in an article title, “First iPhone, now Droid. Who needs Windows?”. Businesses need Windows Mobile, lots of Windows Mobile faithful need Windows Mobile. There are tons of Windows Mobile users still out here. I think that many will give Microsoft another chance with WinMo 7. If it doesn’t produce something worthy of getting excited, I will buy the author’s opinion. He claims that the iPhone killing "Droid” won’t get that job done, but he thinks it will put a nail in Windows Mobile’s coffin…

So the Droid may not be the iPhone killer but rather the Windows Mobile slayer. Microsoft, of course, will always have the unassailable PC franchise. But, wait, isn’t Android coming to Netbooks next year? Maybe the real battle royal for Microsoft is yet to come.

I think the Droid looks really nice, but I think it’s going to take more than 10 nice Android phones to get the final nails into the coffin people. Don’t get me wrong, I am excited about what Google is doing with Android, and there is certainly nothing wrong with it now, but HTC and Samsung are still pushing out some hot WinMo phones that are drool worthy. Until that stops, Windows Mobile will still be a player. Maybe not the player it once was, but still top 4.

Verizon has released a slew of Christmas ads along the very same theme, not only are the ads humorous, but if you check AT&T’s own website for their coverage maps, kind of makes you wonder if the lawsuit has any validity.

Best advice to AT&T if they want to be on Santa’s good list, concentrate on improving your network, and leave Verizon alone.

Check out the ads after the jump, there’s even a little Windows Mobile love thrown in.(…) Read the rest of There’s a map for that. Christmas Style! (7 words)

It won’t go away completely — the myFaves app will apparently continue to be offered as a convenient, cutesy way to access five frequent contacts and existing subscribers won’t be kicked off their plans — but for new subscribers, Even More is being billed as the spiritual successor. For the record, unlimited voice through Even More Plus starts at $49.99, so the price is definitely right — but more importantly will this end up meaning that we lose the beloved silkscreened myFaves logo on the back of virtually every T-Mobile handset sold today?

Whenever a Moto with triband HSPA hits the FCC, we’re naturally going to end up scouring the documentation — what can we say, it’s in our blood — and today we’ve found a model claiming to be the rumored Motus. As a refresher, this is a device we’d heard would rock the Android midrange with a 5 megapixel AF cam, 3.1-inch QVGA display, and HSPA for a Q1 ‘10 release, so it’s not much more than a tweaked CLIQ as far as we’re concerned — but the big news here might actually be that the Motus filing adds legitimacy to the leaked roadmap where we’d originally heard of it. That document made mention of a “Sholes Tablet” that takes the already-high-end DROID / MILESTONE further upmarket with an 8 megapixel cam and xenon flash, and as you can imagine, we’ll be listening to our friends at the FCC pretty intently over the next few weeks to see if we can catch that one sliding through.

It’s just like the old riddle: what looks like a Hero, thinks it’s an iPhone, and does double-duty as an old-school FM handheld? Why, it’s the TVG3 — and when combined with some prototypical shanzhai flair, its (con)fusion of attributes from all over the cellphone space make this one a stunning exemplar of KIRFness. Behold! 3.2-inch touchscreen, G-sensor (aka gyroscope), dual sims, Bluetooth, WiFi, built-in TV tuner, HTC looks and an almost-iPhone UI: not bad for $130, eh? In case you won’t be in Shenzhen any time soon, you can get a closer look after the break.
