From the website:

The basis for the formula was taken from the well known book “La fabrication des liqueurs” from J. De Brevans dating back to 1897. As usual in the 19th century the formula has been slightly modified to gain a nicely balanced distillate. Oliver Matter just uses botanicals cultivated to eco standards from nearby or equally high quality herbs such as Anise e.g. Of course no sugar or any other artificial substances are used. Oliver Matter just uses herbs such as small wormwood, hyssop and others for colouring Absinthe. The result is a pretty complex yet smooth, harmonic and mellow Absinthe.

You can purchase Absinthe Brevans A.O. Spare at Absinthe.de. Unless you live in Canada. They won’t ship here. (I asked.)

Details below:

Seeking personal stories for book

I am gathering stories for a book that will help parents understand why their teens are interested in certain media, mainly heavy metal music, video games (especially violent video games), and/or alternative spiritual paths. Ultimately, I’m hoping to bridge the communication gap so that anxious parents can lay their fears to rest — rather than assuming their kids are on a path to violence or self-destruction.

So, I’m looking for input from folks who developed an interest in any of these things as teens, and am hoping you’ll respond to the following survey(s) to provide stories from your life. Information you provide may be used in the book, but will be used anonymously unless you request otherwise.

I’m looking for folks who first discovered paganism in their teen years. I hope you’ll answer that survey specifically, but if you were or are interested in the others, please feel free to answer all three.

Thanks so much, in advance, for sharing your stories.

Surveys:

Thanks!

Beth

Beth’s a solid person with a magickal background, and I respect her work. Her approach will not be Wickeresque. So, if you get the chance, please help Beth out by filling in any applicable surveys. Thanks!

What do these three things have in common? I’m still not quite clear on that.

I received Francis Breakspear’s new book, If It Was Easy, Everyone Would Be Doing It! a few months ago, read a few pages, then got caught up in other things. I recently picked it up again, and so far it’s as direct and funny as his first book, Kaostar!, as expected.

Also as in Kaostar!, essays appear from Kate Hoolu and someone called “Dave Evans” (a pseudonym if I ever heard one).

I’ve just finished reading a two-essay interlude by Kate Hoolu, the first, titled “Stereotyping”, deals with issues of race and culture, and the second, “That behaviour is not normal! But how do you prove it?”, discusses mental health. It’s unusual to see these topics addressed in books ostensibly about practical magick, to say the least.

I’m trying to understand their inclusion, apart from the lip service paid to “expanding horizons” (which can easily be accomplished via other means). Race and cultural identity seem to be subjects that preoccupy the British and other European news media. If these subjects were rarely (if ever) addressed in earlier occult works, is it because all readers were assumed to be of white European descent, or because no-one really cared to examine the issues, and what does that mean?

Earlier in the book Breakspear cautioned against reading occult material in public. Not because the reader might spontaneously burst into robes and start chanting in Enochian, but for fear of what the neighbours might think if they caught you reading such mad rot. Yet, I regularly read stuff with weird symbols and esoteric titles on the subway. It’s where I do a lot of my reading, especially in poor weather when I can’t take my bike. I see other people reading Illuminatus!, Crowley, and sometimes contemporary fluff, but in a decade of reading this stuff in public, no-one’s ever denounced me as a Satanist or even so much as sidled away in horror and dismay. It’s almost disappointing. It makes me wonder, do these warnings come from personal events in the author’s life, or are they mere paranoia?

It may be naive, but I wonder wonder why people can’t just, you know, get over it the way civilized polite society have gotten over being upset about homosexuality or the proper “place” of women. There might always be a few oddballs who refuse to see people as people, but surely these people are marginal, not mainstream? Right? The riots in France in 2005 rather suggest otherwise, but I still don’t know what is achieved by the inclusion of these essays in this context? Awareness?

Certainly racism is ignorant and undoubtedly harmful, and mental illness misunderstood and unnecessarily stigmatized. Recognizing potential challenges/obstacles/central aspects of one’s being is one thing, but can it be self-defeating? Perhaps endorsing a victim-complex that need not exist? And what doe it have to do with occultism?

I don’t have any real answers. I don’t even have any good questions. It just got me thinking. Purpose achieved?

From Fulgur’s website:

Barry William Hale has nurtured an early fascination with the order Diptera to develop a buzzing, post-modern grimoire-bestiarum. Drawn from many years practical experience working with Beelzebub and his servitors, Legion 49 provides us with a rare glimpse of ‘the Lord of the Flies’ and the dark quintessence of his Legion. In a series of short, de-constructionist essays the artist explores traditional methods of evocation and the myths surrounding Beelzebub, before providing an iconographical and sigillic recension of his horde of forty-nine servitors, glimpsed through the protective-symmetry of the paper-cut traditions of old Mexico.

Fulgur always produces gorgeous work, last year’s Conjunctio, by Orryelle Defenestrate-Bascule and The Valley of Fear, by Austin Osman Spare were further proof of this.

His daughter, Christina, is selling some of his personal effects on eBay, including several tarot decks, mugs, lighters, clothing, and other items.

Each item has a little personal story associated with it.

Christina’s reasons are given on the new Robert Anton Wilson site as:

I do want to announce that you now have an opportunity to have an authentic RAW Artifact, from his life, his home, his library, his love: up close and personal items as I work to raise funds to help his disabled son, and pay off his final debts. Yup, he left some. Didn’t mean to, and apologized to me before skipping the event horizon. Wish I didn’t have to, but it’s my job to wrap up this debt, and move on so that we can actually do what he wanted. Which is to keep the lasagna flying – his work available to all who were interested, and provide some support for his son. He was never very attached to physical things, but he did get great joy from many items that came to be in his home. I want to make them available in the hopes that they will also bring you joy, and will close the door on Bob’s debts. So here’s your chance to have a real RAW Souvenir, to inspire your own Muse and bring RAW energy into your own space!

The auction appears genuine, so if you’re interested, click on over to eBay, grab something of RAW’s, and help support his remaining family.

I just bought a copy of Evolution, Volume One, by Stephen Pochin and two catalogues, Borough Satyr and Austin Osman Spare: Artist – Occultist – Sensualist which I’m very excited about.

It’s also fascinating to see how much the prices have climbed for some of the works I already own. Geeze. If you’re interested in Spare, and can afford to, buy while still can.

And hey, as an added bonus, it looks like Weiser Anitquarian now hosts a variety of RSS feeds so you can be notified of any new books that come in under your favourite categories. Neat.

Remember this?

Saturday Signal is Plutonica.net’s weekly round up of neat stuff found on the occult Internet. Though as it’s been on hiatus for a bit, I’ve decided to highlight a few nifty things you may’ve missed in that time.

As it was in the past, so shall it remain: if you find something weird, cool or otherwise noteworthy, please e-mail me about it. If you’re pro-promotion, include your name and website for extra credit. Thanks!

So, let’s see what we’ve got this week…

Kallisti is a strange short film by bones. Two voices speak, one reading chapters from the Principia Discordia, the other is layer over and under, providing a sort of alternate commentary. Billed as religious propaganda, it’s a disquieting 4 minutes and 35 seconds long. Hail Eris?

The fellow at Gyllene Gryningen has a bit of a crush (he calls it a “fascination”) with Persian alchemists, and reading his post on the subject, “Contemporary Persian alchemists“, now I kinda do, too.

Over at his blog on RitualMagick.co.uk, David Rankine, author of The Goetia of Dr Rudd and Veritable Key of Solomon (with Stephen Skinner), shares a bit about a new book in the works titled, A Collection of Magical Secrets.

Patti Wigington in her blog on About.com, “Official Pagan Cemetery Opens in Denmark“, “designated for members of Forn Sidr, Denmark’s officially recognized Asatru group”. Neat.

The lovely Beautiful Pyre (previously Ceilede) has written a great list titled Any Good Magician Could. Abso-fecking-lutely, my dear.

Nick Hate, formerly Nick Fitt, then Nick Pell and possibly still Ulysses Lazarus, who was formerly of Key23, then Key64 and is now of the Black Sun Gazette, wrote about his experience meeting Peter Lamborn Wilson (forever Hakim Bey to the cool kids) in New York at a talk on money. Full details (and pictures!) in “Peter Lamborn Wilson in NYC“.

Well, that’s it for this week, my darlings. More linkage next weekend.

A short video depicting a posthumous “interview” with Spare has been produced by Jamie Gregory & Neil Dineen in commemoration.

The video is comprised of photographic stills and images of Spare’s paintings and sketches are interspersed throughout. Philip Glass‘ ‘Spaceship’ provides the soundtrack.

The “interview” is conducted via oracle, with a dice, playing cards, Beck’s and Zos Speaks!, and related through scrolling text on the screen. Questions are posed in places Spare had a connection with: the Royal Academy in Piccadilly where two paintings were exhibited in Spare’s youth, the British Museum which inspired Spare’s imagery, and the Goat Tavern he frequented with Kenneth and Steffi Grant.

For all that, the responses calculated to the questions are interesting, though this may be attributed more to Spare’s enigmatic style. Repeat answers, however, dull some some of the potency of this method for the spectator.

Amusingly, the oracle declined to answer the question “What really happened between you and Aleister Crowley?”

Following the “interview” two “new” automatic images are produced “via the menstruum of undines”, and a thankful toast of Budweiser is offered at Spare’s grave.

The twelve-minute video can be downloaded from LaShTAL.com at “An Interview with Austin Osman Spare – a commemorative video“.

Falcon Press was started in 1981 by Hyatt with Israel Regardie. The name was changed to New Falcon Publications due to confusion with a prior claim to the name by another publisher. After Hyatt’s death in 2008, ownership changed to Michael Miller.

Original Falcon Press was launched shortly thereafter by Nick Tharcher and Linda Miller, selling many of the same titles as New Falcon Publications. Nick Tharcher has been granting interviews recently to clear up some of this confusion.

Joseph Mathey interviews Nick Tharcher and Linda Miller, widow of Alan Miller (Christopher Hyatt) about Original Falcon Press and the separation from New Falcon Publications for Alterati’s podcast, GSpot in “Falcon, Falcon, Burning Bright?” (Thanks to James Curcio for bringing the podcast to my attention.)
