In doing so they knew this may cost them their lives. They knew they would have to fight for their independence- just declaring it wouldn’t be enough. They were willing to die for their freedom- and many did.

It is not enough to declare what you want in life, you must be willing to fight for it. That is what the essence of martial arts is about. Fighting for what is right. Fighting for freedom, for opportunity, for justice, for a better life for your family. What in your life is worth fighting for?

Life is full of risks, our forefathers knew the risks of declaring independence. They weighed the costs and the rewards, but most importantly they were fully committed to their decision. Most people aren’t fully committed to their decisions, especially the ones that matter most. Our martial arts teaches us to face our fears, to persevere, to follow through with our commitments.

Many martial arts are hundreds if not thousands of years old. Many died and gave their lives for the techniques and concepts we train today. Martial arts honors those that came before us and paid the ultimate price for the knowledge we have. When we bow onto the mat we do so in recognition of those that came before us. When we use our training to overcome obstacles and stand victorious we honor those that paid the ultimate price!

I had the privilege of being in Philadelphia this Fourth of July. It is an awesome reminder of those that paid the ultimate price for our freedom. I urge you to honor them by living your life to the fullest. Conquer, overcome, make a difference. Don’t waste your freedoms, make your life count!

Make every day Independence Day.

Jared Hess vs. Yosmany Cabezas

Round 1

Big kick by Cabezas to start things off but Hess holds on to his leg and takes Cabezas down and takes side mount. Hess connects with a couple of nice lefts. Hess hammers Cabezas with some hard lefts to the face as he works toward top mount. Hess is controlling the fight on the ground early. Hess postures up and lands a hard right. Cabezas is trying to work an arm bar from the bottom. Hess is using his wrestling skills to keep Cabezas at bay. The referee stands the fighters up. Cabezas looks a little gassed already. Cabezas gets Hess in a guillotine but Hess escapes. Another takedown by Hess as the bell sounds.

Hess controls the round with his wrestling skills

Round 2

Cabezas is breathing very heavy as Round 2 starts. Cabezas tries an ill-fated trip attempt and ends up on his back because of it and Hess is now in control again. Hess is working Cabezas up against the cage. The fans are getting restless but the fact is the fight is just so terribly one-sided as Hess is dominating Hess is completely controlling the fight on the ground. Hess is looking to end the fight with blows but he is appears to be tiring and doesn't have much behind his punches.

Another big round for Hess

Round 3

Both fighters come out of their corners and look spent. Roundhouse kick by Cabezas. Another wrestling takedown by Hess and it's back to it the fight's common theem...Hess on top. Hess is just cruising home at this point, but he isn't taking any chances. Hess has Cabezas' back and is hammering down blows as Cabezas is just trying to hang on. The ref can't let the fight finish, he has to call it.

Total domination in every sense of the word by Hess.

Official Decision

Hess by TKO at 14:26
