Former IHRA champ looking for good 2012 after first year learning curve

LONDON, ONTARIO (February 2, 2012) – One of Canada’s most successful drag racers will be returning to the Pro Modified Racing Association in 2012.

After his first PMRA racing last year, London’s Rob Atchison will be behind the wheel of the Atchison Racing Corvette Pro Modified, and said he hopes his short time last season will bear fruit.

“We’re going to try to make the next step up,” said the three-time IHRA Funny Car Champion, who believes the team has made the transition from the Alcohol-powered Flopper to a door-slamming Pro Modified. “We’ve made some changes, and I think I’ve learned how to drive the new car.”

Atchison was a dominate force in the IHRA Funny Car wars, winning 21 events, world records in elapsed time and speed, and the three titles in 2003, 2004, and 2005. With only 20 runs on the Corvette last year, he believes he has made the needed driving style adjustments.

“With a Funny Car you have to steer it all the time,” he noted. “I found with the Pro Modified the drive can be much smoother, and there is not the need to be aggressive as with the Funny Car. There is less correcting with the Pro Modified, and making adjustments as you’re driving down the track does little to help.”

Rob’s father Bob Atchison will continue to act as crew chief for the car, a Tim McAmis Race Car chassis powered by a 481X AJPE prepared by Atchison Machine Service under the hood of the 1963 Corvette body. An APSI Superchargers – D Rotor Screw-type Supercharger is employed, along with an Atchison Machine Service fuel system. A three-speed Lenco sits behind the engine.

Assisting the team are Kyle Harris, Pat Ryan, Dennis Smith, Colin Harris, Maxine Atchison and Julie Atchison. Thanks go to Dave Bankes for his involvement on the team.

The effort is sponsored by Atchison Machine Service and West Coast Transportation along with product sponsors, Pennzoil/Shell Oil, Eaton Aeroquip, Mahle Clevite, NGK Spark Plugs, Contact Welding, Jet Tools and Equipment, Hoosier Tire, Dewalt Tools, Lenco Transmissions and Permatex Canada. The team placed ninth in the 2011 PMRA standings highlighted with a semi-round appearance in event six of the schedule.

Racing since 1995, Atchison said he and the team should be ready for serious racing.
“We’re going to be back,” he said. “I love racing the PMRA series, it’s a great organization that gives us the chance to race locally in front of many fans and sponsors.”

The PMRA will compete in seven events this year, starting May 18-20 with the Victoria Day Weekend Challenge at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park.

The Pro Modified Racing Association, www.PMRA.ca competes with its two companion series, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, www.Quick32.ca and the Pro Bike & Sled Series, www.PBSS.ca offering a solid and full package of drag racing action.

MARTIN, MICHIGAN (December 21, 2011) – US 131 Motorsports Park will be celebrating its 50th year of operation in 2012, and the Pro Modified Racing Association, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series will be part of those celebrations.

The three popular drag racing series will race at the south-western Michigan track June 8-9, for the second event on the 2012 calendar.

The race at US 131 Motorsports Park, to be known as the Summer Showdown, will be the first for the PMRA, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, or the PBSS.

“We’re very excited in going to US 131 Motorsports Park,” said Bruce Mehlenbacher, Director of Operations for the three Series. “This is our first time in Michigan, and US 131 is a perfect fit for our three Series. Not only will it give each Series and its teams a chance to showcase in a new market, but also an opportunity for new competitors to tryout our Series. Michigan is a hot-bed of serious and very competitive race teams.”

Opened in 1962, the facility received a $14 million upgrade 10 years ago, and continues to host a major IHRA National event.

“We’ve worked with Bruce (Mehlenbacher) for several years now, and we finally got a date set up,” said the track’s General Manager Jason Peterson. “This weekend will be a stand-alone event, and we’re looking forward to it.”

Peterson added that admission prices for the Summer Showdown will be very affordable. An adult pass for Friday, June 8 will be $12, and for Saturday, $15 will get you through the gate.

A test and tune session for all PMRA, Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and PBSS racers will be held June 8, along with a qualifying round. The remaining qualifiers will be held June 9, and then elimination rounds will take place

“US 131 Motorsports Park is a fabulous track,” said two-time Quick 32 Sportsman Series champion Kevin Wicke of Stratford, Ontario. “We have raced there many, many times. The teams in that area know all about our Series, they will be gunning for us.”

Wicke, who drives the K&K Racing Dodge Stratus, won in Top Sportsman class at the IHRA National event at the track in 2007, and has been runner-up in the class twice.

“It’s a great track,” he continued. “I’m glad we’re going there, and I know all the racers can’t wait to get there.”

All three Series will open the 2012 season with the Victoria Day Weekend Challenge at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park May 18-20. At present, the PMRA will be racing in six events next year, and plans are underway to add another event to the Quick 32 Sportsman Series and PBSS to bring their complement of races to six as well.

SYCAMORE, ILLINOIS (November 28, 2011) – One of the world’s largest and most popular names in motorsport instrumentation will be returning to the Pro Modified Racing Association and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series as a Contingency sponsor for 2012.

Auto Meter Products, manufacturers of a wide range of automotive and racing instruments, will provide contingency awards for both drag race series at all events for the upcoming season.

Auto Meter has been a part of the popular drag race series since 2006.

“We are pleased once again to be a part of both the PMRA and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series,” said Marc Erickson, Director of Motorsports for Auto Meter. “Both series have done a great job in the promotion of drag racing during the past several years.”

Auto Meter offers its customers the most extensive line of technologically advanced, competition-inspired, and race-proven instruments of any aftermarket automotive instrument supplier in the world today.

“We are proud to have Auto Meter return as part of our contingency package,” stated Bruce Mehlenbacher, Director of Operations of the PMRA and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series. “As the most respected name in high quality, performance aftermarket instrumentation, tachometers, and gauges, Auto Meter is the standard in the industry, and we are very happy to have them with us once again.”

Started in his Illinois home in 1957, Auto Meter founder Vern Westberg believed that electrical and electronic applications to automotive instrumentation was the way of the future, and started the business with an electric tachometer. He pursued his vision, overcoming the bias that electrical gages were inferior to mechanical instruments, proving that readings with his products were more concise and with less chance of breakdown.

The business grew from a home-based mail-order enterprise, and by the mid 1960s Westberg had developed a new timing light and dwell tach as well as a diesel engine tach.

Always with an ear bent to racers’ concerns, around 1970 Auto Meter introduced its “Monster” tachometer, a precise instrument with a large five-inch face which gave the racer an easy and instant reading on engine speed. This tach paved the way for electronic instruments, and is a mainstay in competition vehicles to this day. It has been cited as one of the 10 most significant speed parts of all time in the world of racing.

Today Auto Meter not only continues to be a leader in automotive gages, it is continually providing state-of-the art instruments and data acquisition units for all types of auto racing.

Auto Meter also works with car manufacturers on OEM equipment for new vehicles, is involved with the motorcycle industry, provides instrumentation to the marine industry, and is a supplier of electric and electronic testing equipment for professional repair facilities.

Along with a contingency award to the low qualifier, the winner and runner-up at each race event, a separate award will be presented through a random draw from the list of qualifiers at each of the PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series drag racing series events for 2012. These contingency programs are designed to increase the exposure and product sales of Auto Meter for race teams and fans in both Series.

And he won the title by a mere margin of only one point.

“This has been a great year,” said the driver of the 1969 Chevy Camaro Pro Modified. “We are very happy,” he continued. “Not only did we win our first PMRA race, we also won the championship. We are just ecstatic.”

In his second year of PMRA competition, Montesano stayed at the top of the points race throughout the six-race season, but it was close as second-place finisher Bruce Boland of Hamilton, Ontario, and third-place Eric Latino of Whitby, Ontario, whittled into Montesano’s lead. When Boland won over Latino in the final of the last race at Cayuga, the points were tallied, and Montesano won over Boland 1534 points to 1533.

Qualifying for each race, Montesano put down some killer laps in qualifying number one for race two and race three, posting a meet low ET – top speed of 5.889-second, 245.81-mph in race two, and a 5.909, 245.54 to start on the pole in race three.

He went to the semi-finals in four races, lost in the final to Latino in race two, but took the win over Boland at Grand Bend for race five.

The Cynergy Composites Camaro body sits on a G-Force Race Cars platform and is powered by a ERD (Engine Research & Development) 526-cubic inch Brad Anderson (BAE) Supercharged Hemi utilizing an ERD fuel system and a PSI supercharger. A Lenco three-speed and a Coan Racing torque converter is couple to the engine, and this combination set the record last season for the quickest quarter-mile converter car at 5.88-seconds.

“I have to thank crew chief Carl Spiering for his work and tuning the car,” Montesano said. “I also want to thank Sal Vavala for all his work, as well as the help and support from the rest of my crew, Elisabeth DosSantos, Jon Daniel Montesano, Nino and Minnie.
“They all put in a lot of hard work and it paid off this year.”

Montesano said he plans to return to PMRA competition in 2012.

“We have some things in the works for next year,” he said, not getting into specifics yet.
“The PMRA has been a fantastic series. I’m glad I moved over to it a couple of years ago.”

The Annual “Night of Champions” Championship Point Award Series Banquet for the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA), the Quick 32 Sportsman Series and the Pro Bike & Sled Series (PBSS) will be held at the Burlington Hotel & Conference Centre in Burlington, Ontario on Saturday, November 19, 2011.

Bruce Boland, driver of the B&B Racing 1941 Willys Pro Modified, lost the title to Vito Montesano of Maple, Ontario. Boland tallied 1533 points to Montesano’s 1534 in a see-saw championship battle all season that was not determined until the last race of the final event.

“We started good and ended good,” noted Boland, who won the PMRA title through 2007-09. “We had some shifter issues midway through the season, or we would have made it.”

One of the original PMRA members since its inception in 2004, Boland has always started his season with a new race car, and 2011 was no exception, as he traded his 1963 Corvette in for a 1941 Willys, a car he said has been top-notch.

“The Willys has been the best car I’ve ever had,” he said. “It was built with top-quality components. I really like this car.”

The Larson Race Cars product is powered by an ERD (Engine Research & Development) 526-cubic inch Brad Anderson (BAE) Supercharged Hemi. A PSI Superchargers screw-type supercharger with tweaking by ERD with a Waterman fuel system sits atop the blower. A Lenco three-speed transmits the power from the engine.

Boland started his season in fine form with a victory at the Cayuga Dragway opener after qualifying number one with a 5.953, 235.47. He was eliminated in round one of race two, went to the semi-final in race three, suffered another first-round loss in race four, and then got back in the groove with a final round appearance in round five, losing to Montesano.

But the B&B team had all in good order for the final event, qualifying number two on the ladder, and working through the field to shut down Eric Latino of Whitby, Ontario to take his second win of the year.

Boland wanted to thank the efforts of his crew, starting with crew chief Rob Cesario, and other team members Willy Kerr, Dennis Veillette, Brad Short and Ron Pierce.

He also thanked Jon Salemi of Resolution Racing Services for his help with the car’s fuel system, along with team sponsors Backwoods Excavating & Float Service, Excel Motorsports, Pro Racing Fuels, NGK Spark Plugs, A&A Auto Parts, and Double D Construction.

Boland said he plans to return to the PMRA in 2012, realizing the challenge will be strong.

“We’re going to have some real competition next season,” he mentioned. It’s going to be tough.”
