Poems can have a maximum of 45 lines, which will not include the title.

Poems must be the entrant's own work and not have been published, self published, published on a website or broadcast. They may not have previously received a written critique from the judge.

Entries must be in English. They can be on any subject and in any style or poetic form.

Entries cannot be returned, fees cannot be refunded and alterations cannot be made once entries have been submitted.

Attached entries must not have the writer's name or identifying marks but all the information required in the entry form must be submitted at the time of sending them.

No correspondence can be entered into as the Judge's decision is final.

Acceptance of the rules is implied by entry.

Entrants who do not comply with the entry rules will be disqualified.

You will receive an email from the competition administrator letting you know that the poems have been delivered safely and an immediate payment receipt from Paypal.

IF YOUR ENTRY AND YOUR PAYMENT COME FROM DIFFERENT EMAIL ADDRESSES, PLEASE MAKE THIS CLEAR WITH THE PAYMENT!

Guest Judge: Michael Schmidt
Michael Schmidt OBE FRSL was born in Mexico and studied at the universities of Harvard and Oxford before settling in England. Michael is Professor of Poetry at the University of Glasgow, where he is also convenor of the Creative Writing M Litt Programme. He is a founder and the Editorial and Managing Director of Carcanet Press and founder and general Editor of PN Review. PN Review has been described as “undoubtedly the most intellectually rigorous publication of its type in the UK.” He has published several collections of poems, two novels, a number of anthologies and volumes of literary history, and two books of translations. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, he received an O.B.E. in 2006 for services to poetry.
Competition Guidelines

40 line max (no min).
There is no theme. All forms (structured and unstructured) and all genres welcome.
Simultaneous submissions are accepted but please let us know as soon as possible if your entry has been accepted elsewhere or won/placed in another writing competition. Entry fees will not be refunded in this case.
Entries may be submitted via email or post. Entries submitted via email must be attached in the form of a Word (doc) or Rich Text Format (rtf). Entries submitted via post must be printed on standard-size paper and double-spaced. Entries sent via post will not be returned (please don’t send your only copy).
Please be kind when formatting and adhere to general rules of courtesy (i.e. 12pt standard font, double-spaced, pages numbered).
Your name, email address or any other distinguishing names should not appear in the body of your poem. For example, please don’t put your name and email address in the header or footer. It is fine to include the title of your submission.
Submissions must be entrant’s own original work and must be previously unpublished (if your work has appeared in an online workshop or a member’s only writer’s chat – etc – it is eligible for this competition).
International submissions are welcomed but all entries must be written in English.
As a condition of submitting, the author must hold the copyright of the entry. If the entry is successful Unbound Press will have one time publicatiopn rights. Copyright remains with the author.
Entries will be judged anonymously and all decisions are final.

You may submit your entry(ies) via email and pay the entry fee(s) online via PayPal. You do NOT need a PayPal account to use this option. Entries submitted via post should be printed on standard-size paper and double-spaced. Please adhere to common formatting (such as 12pt font, Times New Roman – or similar standard font – double-spaced). We do not reject entries based on varied formatting but we do appreciate standard style.
Entries sent via email will not be returned. Please do not send your only copy.
If you do not have an email address or you wish to receive hard-copy confirmation that we received your entry, please include a SASE or postcard.

Recognizing and Developing Unpublished Canadian Poets

Entrant Requirements

Canadian citizens only, whose current primary residence is in Canada

Age 19 and older only

The contest is open to unpublished and self-published writers only, and not to writers who have had prose or poetry published by a traditional publisher or third party in books, anthologies, journals, online, or any other form.

Contest winners will be required to show proof of age, Canadian citizenship and residency. By entering this contest, you claim that you are an "unpublished or self-published writer", as defined above, and if it is brought to our attention that you are not, or that you are not the author of the poem you submit, you will be disqualified if you are one of our top three contest winners.

The Contest reserves the right to limit the number of entrants at any time during the submission period and make an announcement of such on this contest website.

Contest winners will be recognized by our contest judge (a published Canadian poet) with a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place ranking as well as the appearance of their contest entry poetry on this contest website.

The names of our contest winners will be listed in the Writing (Contests/Awards) section of the November 2012 issue of Quill & Quire, Canada's Magazine of Book News and Reviews.

An interview with the first-prize winner will be published on Allyson Latta's website, "Memoir Writing & More", www.allysonlatta.ca, recommended by The Writer magazine in the 125th-anniversary issue as one of "16 of Our Favorite Writing Blogs and Websites" (March 2012). Allyson is also our contest's Editorial/Media Adviser.

To develop talent, $1,000 in contest prize money will be directed to online private mentoring with the contest judge, poet Catherine Graham (for Catherine's biography, click on Contest Judge).

Theme

The theme for the first Abandoned Towers writing contest is:

The concept of “abandoned towers” must be incorporated into the piece, as a phrase, allusion, metaphor, physical tower… however you choose.

Genres

Short Story: any genre is acceptable for the contest
Poetry: any form is acceptable for the contest
Flash Fiction: any genre is acceptable for the contest

Length

Short Story: 5,000 words or less
Poetry: 10 pages or less (aprox 250 lines or less)
Flash Fiction: 1000 words or less

Cost

Short Story: $10 per entry or $25 for 3 entries
Poetry: $5 per entry or $12 for 3 entries

Purpose

We’re hosting this writing contest for a number of reasons, but in the interest of transparency we’ll share them with you here:

To celebrate the relaunch of Abandoned Towers!
To provide an opportunity for writers to be recognized and rewarded for the excellence of their writing
To provide a sense of excitement about and interest in in Abandoned Towers
To increase the profile of Abandoned Towers
To provide a source of material to be published on AbandonedTowers.com and in print editions of Abandoned Towers
To provide seed funding to Abandoned Towers, allowing for a budget to improve and expand the magazine
To help Abandoned Towers move closer to its goal of becoming a professional market

Fine Print

Each submission category requires a minimum number of entries in order to proceed. If the minimum is not achieved all entry fees will be returned to the authors, and all rights will revert to the author. The minimums are:

Short Story: 100 total entries
Poetry: 50 total entries
Flash Fiction: 50 total entries

Winners will be selected prior to short list announcement in order to preserve anonymity of the pieces. Short listed pieces which do not win or receive honourable mentions will be published to AbandonedTowers.com (upon contest close). If in the opinion of the judges there are not 3 pieces worthy of prizes, those deemed worthy of prizes will split the remaining unrewarded purse(s).

Example: if no third place short story is chosen, then first place would instead receive $500 + $50 = $550 and second place would receive $250 + $50 = $300, so the total purse of $850 is still awarded.

If, in the opinion of the judges, no piece is worthy of being declared “winner” the entire purse for the category will be awarded to a randomly selected author of a short listed piece.
Rights

During the submission process you will be asked to provide the following rights to Abandoned Towers.
Submitted Piece

First world electronic rights (text and audio). If the piece is not published electronically within the calendar year 2012, all rights revert to the author.
Short Listed Piece

In addition to first world electronic rights (text and audio), we claim first print rights and non-exclusive anthology rights.
Honourable Mention

In addition to first world electronic rights (text and audio), we claim first print rights and exclusive anthology rights (for 1 year, after which they become non-exclusive anthology rights).
Winning Piece

In addition to first world electronic rights (text and audio) we claim first print rights and exclusive anthology rights (for 2 years, after which they become non-exclusive anthology rights).
Judging

Pieces will be judged on the following 5 criteria (equally):

Theme: how well the piece incorporates the theme “abandoned towers”
Writing: the quality of the writing
Potential: the quality of the ideas
Enjoyment: how much the judge enjoyed the piece
Intangibles: everything else

Canterbury Festival Poet of the Year - Deadline: 2012/05/31

Terms and Conditions
1) Entry is open to all adults over the age of 18 on 4 October 2012. National and International entries are welcome.
2) The closing date for the competition is Thursday 31 May 2012. Entries must be posted or delivered to: Adult Poetry Competition, Canterbury Festival Office, 8 Orange Street, Canterbury, Kent CT1 2JA. Entries will not be returned so please keep a copy.
3) The entry form and entry fee of £5 must accompany each poem. Payment should be in the form of a cheque made out to “Canterbury Festival Foundation (Friends)”. There is no limit to the number of entries that can be submitted, however, please include payment of £5 per poem. Only one entry form needs to be filled in, even if several poems are submitted. We are unable to accept email entries or online payment.
4) The poem or poem sequence may be on any subject and in any style, but must not exceed 60 lines in length. Entries are judged anonymously and the poet’s name should not appear on the manuscript itself. No person may win more than one prize.
5) Handwritten entries cannot be accepted. Entries should be typed in black ink on A4 paper.
Please do not staple entries.
6) Entries must be the poet’s original, unpublished work and not accepted for publication before the Awards evening on 4 October 2012. Ownership remains with the poet at all times; The Festival will not assume any share in copyright. The Canterbury Festival is not responsible for any claim of plagiarism, which will be directed to the poet alone.
7) The poem should be written principally in English; incidental foreign words/phrases and the use of regional variants are permitted.
8) Poems will be sent anonymously to the judging panel:
- Sarah Salway (Canterbury Laureate, novelist and poet)
- Marilyn Donovan (Canterbury Festival Poet of the Year 2011)
- Luigi Marchini (Chairman of SaveAs Writers’ Group in Canterbury, poet)
9) The competition organisers reserve the right to change the judging panel.
10) A longlist of entries will be selected for inclusion in the 2012 Anthology. Longlisted poets will be asked to re-submit the selected poems by e-mail in order to aid publication.
11) Shortlisted poets will be asked to read their poems at the Award Evening on the 4 October
2012 (or to nominate a reader to do this on their behalf).
12) The poets will receive a free copy of the Anthology at the Award Evening. The Anthology will be on sale at the Award evening and from the Festival offices after the event.
13) Prizes include cases of wine, book tokens, champagne and copies of the competition anthology.But most important is the revered title of Canterbury Festival Poet of the Year for 2012

Far Horizons Award for Poetry - Deadline: 2012/05/01

The Malahat Review, Canada’s premier literary magazine, invites emerging poets from Canada, the United States, and elsewhere to enter the Far Horizons Award for Poetry. Eligible poets have yet to publish their poetry in book form (a book of poetry is defined to have a length of 48 pages or more). One prize of $1000 (CAD) is awarded. Poets contributing to The Malahat Review have won or been nominated for National Magazine Awards for Poetry and the Pushcart Prize.
2012 Deadline

The next deadline for the Far Horizons Award for Poetry is May 1, 2012 (postmark date).

This year's judge will be Mary Dalton.

Guidelines

Emerging poets may enter up to three poems per entry.
Each poem may not exceed 60 lines, excluding spaces between stanzas.
No restrictions as to subject matter or aesthetic approach apply.
Entry fee required:
$25 CAD for Canadian entries;
$30 US for American entries;
$35 US for entries from Mexico and outside North America.
Entrants receive a one-year subscription to The Malahat Review for themselves or a friend.
Poems previously published, accepted or submitted for publication elsewhere are not eligible.
The Malahat Review makes no distinction between online and print publication. Work published by an online journal, on a personal website, or in a blog is considered to be previously published.
Entrants’ anonymity is preserved throughout the judging. Contact information (including an email address) should not appear on the submission, but on a separate page that also lists the title of each enclosed poem.
No submissions will be accepted by email.
No entries will be returned.
The winner and finalists will be notified via email.
Entrants will not be notified separately by letter about the judges’ decisions even if a SASE is included for this purpose.
Only the winning entry will be published in The Malahat Review’s Fall 2012 issue.

MACHIGONNE FICTION CONTEST: $1,000 for an exceptional work of literary and/or experimental fiction. Submit up to 7,500 words: anything from flash to the long story. KNIGHTVILLE POETRY CONTEST JUDGE

Jeanne Marie Beaumont is the author of three books of poetry, most recently, Burning of the Three Fires, which was a finalist for the 2011 Writers’ League of Texas Book Award, and Curious Conduct. Her first book, Placebo Effects, was selected as a winner in the National Poetry Series. She also won the Dana Award for Poetry and The Greensboro Review literary award for poetry. Her poems have been included in two dozen anthologies and textbooks, including Good Poems for Hard Times, The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror, The Norton Introduction to Literature, 9th ed., and Poetry Daily: 366 Poems from the World's Most Popular Poetry Website. She was co-editor of the literary magazine, American Letters & Commentary, from 1992-2000. With Claudia Carlson, she co-edited the anthology, The Poets' Grimm: Twentieth Century Poems from Grimm Fairy Tales.

"Afraid So," a poem from Curious Conduct, was made into a short film by the same name (narrated by Garrison Keillor) by award-winning filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt. The movie has been screened at numerous international film festivals, on the IFC, and at the Museum of Modern Art. She served as director of the annual Advanced Poetry Seminar from 2006-2010, and she currently teaches at both The Unterberg Poetry Center of the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan, and at the Stonecoast MFA Program in Maine.

MACHIGONNE FICTION CONTEST JUDGE

Rick Bass grew up in Houston, and started writing short stories on his lunch breaks while working as a petroleum geologist in Jackson, Mississippi.

Bass has published more than 20 books of essays and novels, and has worked passionately for environmental causes all over the world. His honors and awards include a PEN/Nelson Algren Award Special Citation for fiction, a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, and the James Jones Literary Society First Novel Fellowship for Where the Sea Used to Be. He was a finalist for the Story Prize in 2006 for his short story collection The Lives of Rocks. He was a finalist of the National Book Critics Circle Award for his autobiography, Why I Came West. He was also awarded the General Electric Younger Writers Award.

Bass lives in the remote Yaak Valley of Montana, where he works to protect his adopted home from roads and logging. He serves on the board of both the Yaak Valley Forest Council and Round River Conservation Studies. His papers are held at the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library at Texas Tech University and Texas State University–San Marcos.

THE NEW GUARD 2012 contest readers are looking forward to reading your work! Contest winners and all finalists get two free copies of TNG, and each submission will be carefully considered for publication. Final judging is blind.

We accept .doc or similar files–no PDFs, please. We do pay strict attention to word and line count. TNG accepts previously unpublished work only. Any size print run or online publication (including blogs and/or social networking) disqualify your entry. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, provided we're notified upon publication elsewhere. If we accept your story or poem for publication, we trust you will remove that story or poem from all other contests upon our acceptance of your work.

TNG retains standard first publication rights; all rights immediately revert to the writer upon publication. Please note that TNG cannot return manuscripts. We are not presently accepting submissions aside from our contests.
