Public Enemy!

The legendary Public Enemy, one of the most influential bands of the last two decades (not only) on music scene, are also coming to Trenčín this year. Multi-platinum albums, lots of awards, respect in music circles, fans’ enthusiastic response… One of their albums was listed in the New York Times’ 25 Most Significant Albums of the 20 th Century. Of all the hip-hop pioneers, they are on the scene for the longest period of time. But frontmen Chuck D and Flavor Flav, and the rest of Public Enemy still offer one hell of a show!

White Lies – the thoroughly polished live shows

We saw White Lies at Sziget in Hungary and it was an incredible concert. The trio belonging to the new generation of British alternative achieved success already in 2009, when they released their debut Lose My Life… and reached #1 in the UK Albums Chart. The last year’s follow-up album The Ritual is also an excellent piece, but what lures one the most are their thoroughly polished live shows. We just can’t wait to see one in July in Trenčín.

Dry the River – powerful songs, powerful concerts

Dry the River’s frontman Peter Liddle describes the band’s production as “folky gospel music played by a post-punk band”. During the live shows their melancholic songs full of musical harmony and moving vocals sound pleasant, hearty and powerful at the same time: we’ve seen that with our own eyes twice. The band release their keenly awaited debut album at the beginning of March. Besides that, they are on the BBC Sound of 2012 list – the list is compiled each year in order to highlight the most promising new music. Get ready for Dry the River’s July concert in Trenčín.

Alternative a la Guillemots

We had the honor of seeing British band Guillemots live and we’re sure that their alternative rock will be a perfect fit for our festival. Their music is not just about rock influence. You can feel fondness for folk as well as jazz in it. The four-piece have released three albums so far; their debut Through the Windowpane from 2006 was nominated for the Mercury Prize.

S.C.U.M. – the prominent newcomers

Last year, London-based quintet S.C.U.M. were chosen by Portishead to play at the ATP festival, which made them one of the prominent newcomers on the rich British scene. S.C.U.M. are regarded as representatives of post-punk or art rock; Pitchfork describes them as shoegazers. Whatever label we decide to choose, during live acts, these young musicians who’ll be playing at our festival in summer sound just like old stagers: raw, direct as well as mysterious.

Jamaican Legends - Ernest Ranglin, Monty Alexander, Sly and Robbie in the unique project

We’re so glad to have the unique project Jamaican Legends at this year’s Bažant Pohoda. Four musicians making music history, who’re already regarded as living legends, form this band. Guitar player Ernest Ranglin is considered to be a godfather of the Jamaican music scene; piano player Monty Alexander made his mark in history by fusing Jamaican music and jazz; rhythmic duo Sly and Robbie – percussionist Sly Dunbar and bass player Robbie Shakespeare – were behind many projects and are described as the equivalent of a creative storm. Jamaican Legends are going to play together only in 2012 at the occasion of the 50 th anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence. We’ll see one of these special live acts in Trenčín!

Using an incredible lot of instruments – from piano, guitars, drums through banjo, harmonica, bass to ukulele or trombone, siblings Kitty, Daisy and Lewis Durham from London’s Kentish Town play awesome rockabilly influenced by swing, r’n’b, blues as well as country. They’re accompanied by their dad Graeme and mum Ingrid Weiss – the ex-member of The Raincoats – on stage. While watching the live show of this family, you’ll be reminded of how beautiful and full of joy life is.

A seventeen-year-old wonder – King Krule

We can say without hesitation that Londoner Archy Marshall is a little music wonder. He’s only seventeen, but it’s as if his songs full of dark tones verging on romantic ballades were created by an experienced music bard. Archy, formerly known as Zoo Kid and now using the stage name King Krule, may be just at the beginning of his career, but that he’s a must-see is unquestionable already today. And you’ll get the chance to see him in Trenčín.

Pop and psychedelia in one – Fixers

Pop and psychedelia mixed together? Is that even possible? Fixers – a five-piece from Oxford, who, according to (not only) British media, have a bright future ahead of them – are the answer. They’re planning to release their debut We’ll Be the Moon in May. We’ll have the opportunity to see one of their remarkable shows in Trenčín in July.

A wonderful post-jazz – Portico Quartet

“They feed on Steve Reich mathematics, Radiohead and ECM northern melancholy”. This is how the music of London-based Portico Quartet is described by Mojo. Post-jazz four-piece melt together acoustic instruments, including the hang with its distinctive sound, and fresh electronica. Their debut Knee-deep in the North Sea was Time Out’s best jazz album of 2007 and was even nominated for the Mercury Prize. Their follow-up album Isla also met with great acclaim and their latest eponymous album was released at the end of January. So, get ready for the new pieces by this fresh and innovative quartet.
