I Am Not a Tree

Dad always said, when he had a catch in his back or something, that he had a "hitch in his get-along." I feel like I have a hitch in my holidays.

When I was a kid, we didn't really have the holidays you saw on TV or in the movies. We didn't string popcorn or sing Christmas carols. There was rarely a turkey at Thanksgiving or a tree at Christmas. We loved each other, but it was just the 4 of us and it seemed silly to them, I guess, to celebrate. They were older and my brother was 12 when I was born. We didn't have much money, or a nice spot to put a tree or even a big table to gather around. It would have been like "faking it," I think. Maybe that's why I'm a big fan of "faking it 'til you make it?" I longed for those holidays I saw on TV. For a birthday party or the ability to believe in Santa or even just dying Easter eggs. Longed for the thankfulness of the season and carving the turkey. I always dreamed of standing around a big kitchen with loved ones and cooking all day or playing touch football in the crisp autumn air before dinner.

Over the years, life has changed me, changed what I want. I tried hard to make the holidays like a movie once I got married, but without children, it just seemed like nothing ever turned out. By then, I had an over idealized version in my head no one could live up to. Including me. So many holidays were spent alone, it became the norm. Especially after my husband passed, there was a lot of alone time, not just at the holidays. I adapted. Adapted so well that I'm not sure I know how to be part of a family anymore. In my head I think I still want to and I try, but I always end up feeling like I don't belong. Like I don't know "how to family" anymore.

I psyche myself up for gatherings. I look forward to them and I dread them, in equal measure. Once I'm there, the people are always lovely and it's nice to have friends and extended family to be around, but after a few hours, I usually can't help but try to figure out how to extricate myself. That's not a reflection on any of them, but of me. I really don't know how to not be alone anymore. I've never thought of myself as anti-social, but I started to wonder.

I worried whether I'd every re-learn how to be with people without trying to sneak off or leave early. I just couldn't figure it out. I wanted nothing more in life to be a part of a family and I think I still do, but my actions are puzzling to me. Am I too old to adapt anymore?

Well, I answered that question this week. I'm NOT too old! I had two fantastic gatherings this week with wonderful people and I have another tomorrow that I'm excited about...cousins I haven't seen in decades.

Moving back home was probably the single best thing I could've ever done for myself. I still have a way to go, though...learning how not to always be alone. But I'm working on it!

I guess the moral of the story is twofold: you're never too old to learn and you are not a tree - if you need to make a change, DO IT!

Alternative moral of the story: when you find yourself self-analyzing in the wee hours, GO TO SLEEP and don't inflict it on others. LOL!

Weekend Bits and Bobs - Loving Every Moment

Long time, no see! I am on hiatus from nail polish reviews, at least I'm not currently accepting PR Samples anyway, but I do intend to post on the blog now and then. When I first started Pointless Cafe, it had zero to do with nail polish. So, while I may post my Nail of the Day now and then, I'm remaining on hiatus from polish reviews at least until the end of this year. I'll re-evaluate at that time.

In the mean time, what HAVE I been up to?

Somehow, in spite of my past use of "never" in connection with "farm," I am becoming a farm girl! Okay, fine. A farm older lady. Since I've moved back to "heaven" from South Lower Hell (aka South Texas) I've been loving the chance to be outside without internally combusting. The trees are green and the land is fertile.

Here's a quick photo "walk" through my recent activities. I have to say, I'm loving every moment. Turning 50 does something to a person. You just want to enjoy life. That doesn't necessarily mean no more working, just doing work you love. For me anyway.

I left the beach, but I didn't leave the water. There are many wonderful lakes...

The Ohio River...

I practically live in Hoosier National Forest and Lincoln Park is so close! Federal and State. Walking in the woods is something I used to dream about when I was in Texas. Now I can do it any time I feel the urge.

Wonderful family...the sort of family time and distance can't separate. Twenty-six years apart and I still adore them. So happy to be close again.

And the farm? ME? Seriously, I'd never even MET a chicken before. My guy's farm doesn't have animals, but his family's farms do. Check out the hens! (Thanks for the eggs, gals!)

Even with no animals, there's work to be done and I'm learning. I can't even describe my first time on the zero-turn and do it any justice. I just wish I'd had it on video. Okay, mostly I wish I'd had HIM on video when it got away from me and he jumped about 5 feet and had to run as he was teaching me. But it didn't take long. If you don't have a zero-turn, you NEED one. Just sayin'. And getting the hang of mowing so much (and AROUND so many flowers and things) I'm pretty sure at least half of his yard got mowed twice.

Land spreadin' out so far and wide (you're welcome for the ear worm if you're over 40)...

And he can grow anything.

But he's not above buying something pretty for my birthday either...

And the mornings are SO PEACEFUL!

So right now, I'm just taking a little time out for myself. But I'll see you back here fairly often, I'm sure.

THIMK! Brexit, Mad Magazine and MEMES

THIMK!

I had a teacher once in high school who had this printed on the chalkboard all the time. I didn't really understand at the time, not being around for the THINK slogan from IBM in the 50s and not being a fan of MAD Magazine, or the subsequent THIMK Magazine. But it was still effective and I did always try to think before I spoke. Research a bit if I wasn't sure.

This post is about politics, sort of, so get out now if you're easily insulted. I say "sort of" because it's not about the candidates running for President in the US. It's not really even directly about Brexit.

But it IS about an epiphany of sorts. Okay maybe not an epiphany. A realization? A light bulb moment?

Social Media SUCKS! Not in every aspect of course, but in the political arena? Absolutely SUCKS!

I've always said that if you did your research, if you were thinking for yourself, if you knew the reasons WHY you backed a particular candidate, or supported a particular party, then I respect you. Whether or not we agree about anything, I respect you as someone who thinks. We can agree to disagree. We can have discussions. But if you believe something vehemently and have no idea why? No respect at all. If your support is based upon a collection of idiotic memes on social media and you can't give one reason why you believe what you do, other than spouting insults and getting mad and calling people morons, which is NOT a discussion by the way, then GO HAVE A SEAT.

But here's what happened to me for the past two mornings over coffee. As usual, I scroll through Facebook. Laughing at cats with brain freeze or Chewbacca Mom or looking at vacation and wedding photos of my friends. That usually includes gorgeous photos of Scotland as I follow a lot of Scotland photography pages.

I love Scotland. I've made no secret of it. Even my DNA test shows that I'm SO Scottish. I love visiting. I can't count the hours I poured over articles and tier levels for visas and all the requirements, which I can't seem to meet so I could move there. I'm also sort of obsessed with all things British. I don't know if anglophile covers all of the UK or not but I am one for sure. So naturally I do see things on Facebook from time to time about Free Scotland and Brexit.

Naturally I don't offer up an opinion because I am not educated on politics in the UK. And I don't live there. But I couldn't help but form at least precursory opinions on it. Was I rooting for an Independent Scotland? Yes. Because I don't know all of the implications and consequences. I only remembered what I learned in history classes.

So now, naturally, I tend to, being as uneducated on Brexit as I was on an Independent Scotland, root for a vote for the UK to leave the EU. Save your angry emails. I've already said I realize the extent to which I am in the dark. And my opinion doesn't matter one whit. I. Don't. Live. There.

I saw an article a friend liked and it was all about how the only smart thing for the UK to do is to vote to leave the EU. I read it. I "liked" the page it was shared from. I wondered a bit about the ins and outs and consequences and if they were worth it and wondered how I'd feel if I lived there. And I went on about my day.

This morning, however, I woke up to my feeds absolutely flooded, because I "liked" that one pro-leaving page, with memes and articles and graphs and charts and rhetoric about why anyone who votes to stay in the EU is an absolute brainless moron. You know I've just finished clicking on most of them and reading what appeared to be well thought out, reasonable reasons. Clever memes were abundant. Just like the US. Just as "absolute." Just as cut and dried. Just as persuasive.

Thing is, in the US, I AM educated on politics in general and specifically, I've made sure to educate myself on the candidates, such as they are. I've lived here my entire life so I know the history and the rhetoric and the "party-line" and everything that goes with it all. Well, to the best of my ability. I believe I have the ability to see the overall picture, not just through a knothole in the fence, but on a ladder, overlooking the fence. The bigger picture. And it takes me less than 2 seconds to see through the stupid memes and seemingly convincing numbers on graphs and charts.

I shake my head in disbelief at some of my "Facebook friends" and so-called educated people who not only fall for, but pass along the most ridiculous things on Facebook. They rant and call people names. They threaten to unfriend people. And it's so obvious they have no idea what they're on about and couldn't answer even the simplest of questions as to why they believe what they do. I think HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? To seemingly educated, intelligent people?

Well, now I know.

I'm not all that. No one is going to mistake me for Einstein or Hawking. But I try to learn. Every day.

And a precursory look at the flood of "information" in my feeds this morning taught me something very important. Two things really. And may have helped me understand a little about HOW people get so easily sucked in. 1. People are lazy. 2. Uninformed people are easily manipulated.

Now I have no clue whether leaving the EU or remaining is best for the UK. My feeds suggest leaving is the ONLY WAY. But I know how skewed that is. And as I read the articles, I was basically convinced they were 100% right. Because I haven't done my research. Because I didn't check their sources. Because "it all sounded right." I did have alarm bells going off in my head though. I knew, deep down, that I couldn't be lazy and just believe whatever was in my feeds this morning.

What I want to know is WHERE ARE THE ALARMS in the heads of all these people in my feeds every day posting political memes about the election here in the US? Are they just too lazy to research? Are they just indoctrinated from childhood? Conditioned by the media? Or are they more calculated, sitting back to see what "the majority" thinks - what bandwagon the hipsters and "cool" people hitch up to - before deciding what "side" they're going to be on. From what "pulpit" they will look down on the mass ignorance and at whom they should shout insults?

I'm now at the bottom of my pot of coffee so I'll bottom-line it quickly: EDUCATE YOURSELVES before opening your mouths. Know what you believe and WHY. Be someone who helps not hinders. Do not be someone who is so easily manipulated. No matter what you decide to stand for, STAND for it or "you'll fall for anything."

Be aware of The Third Wave.

First, I must explain how this collection came about. Indie makers are, well...creative people to say the least LOL! And they always have a lot of polish testing that they can pull from for a guest spot in a box etc. Or, you know, when they have weird food-induced dreams. If you aren't "friends" with Leah Ann on Facebook, it's possible you missed what prompted this collection, which is a shame. She has weirder dreams than I do and that is saying something. (Shut Up, Ashley!)

Hi everyone! Time once again for The Digital Dozen week and for February it's Nail Heroes! I'd need more than 5 days to really cover all of them, but for now we will be showing you 5 of them.

For Day 1, it's Debbie over at The Crumpet. If you follow her blog, or her other blog, you may know that she will be stepping WAY back from blogging and nails soon to focus on her own life and we will miss her terribly. But you can't really begrudge someone doing what they need to do for themselves - their own lives. Debbie I hope you are able to find all the happiness in life that you deserve and I hope you stay in touch and don't forget us!

I chose one of my Crumpet favorites to recreate, but I did it in a different color scheme. For this mani I used KBShimmer Eyes White Open and Eclipse (both purchased by me because yes I'm on my 2nd bottles of each already) and acrylic paint for the red and pink.

Weekend Bits and Bobs: Valentine's Day 2016, Bunns and my Perspective Adjustment Team in "Action"

4. Okay, now that's out of the way, here's how I really feel...

So, I'm doing this February calling called #rockyourhandwriting on IG with lots of other people. I don't know why, but it's fun! Makes me want to find my calligraphy pens and play around again. But so far I'm just using a regular ol' pen and some sharpies now and then. #lazy

Here are a few more:

I cooked a little - tried a few new things. The other day I saw a recipe for Wafer Sandwich Cookies that looked SO GOOD! While I'm not what I'd call a "great" cook, I will say that I'm usually a very good baker. But alas, these were, um...well let's just say they TASTED amazingly delicious.

I got the recipe from CasualContrast here and they looked like this...

So I gave them a shot! The icing was easy of course.

The wafer part though? I didn't do something right. Yes I pricked them with a fork, but you can't tell. However, they were buttery amazingness though. Wouldn't win any beauty contests though!

I also had some leftover potatoes from dinner so the next morning I made tattie scones, a Scottish favorite. First time trying and I need to play with the potato-to-flour ratio a bit but they were yummy.

If there had been any doubt before as to why I'm not a food blogger, I mean aside from the fact that I'm the pickiest eater on the planet, with the palate of a picky 5 year old, there shouldn't be any question now! But, if you come over I will feed you well and it will all taste good!

My FOURTH coffee maker since I moved back to Indiana crapped out on me. That's less than 9 months! (And I had the receipts and boxes for two of them, so as much as I hate to return stuff, I carted them off to Walmart and was told I was TOO LATE. Past 90 days. GRRRRR!) Even though this awful water goes through a Brita pitcher first, I still think it has to be our water causing the issue. So after polling my FB friends, I ended up with a Bunn. No bells and whistles like clocks or timers or auto shut-offs, but DANG SON, I got coffee in 3 minutes! And it's good coffee!

It's been a bit of a rough week at Chez Sheila, so I allowed myself a little indulgence. (Who am I kidding, I allow myself any food indulgence I can anytime I can. I just don't usually eat it quite like this.) Yes I've made some awesome Boston Creme Pies in the past but I bought this one and I have zero shame. And yes I ate it straight from the package with a fork like a BOSS. And yes, I ate the entire thing all by myself.

I'm still wearing this mani I did the other day while reviewing the upcoming CbL Krispy Kreme Dreams Collection (launching Feb. 20th) - still working on my stamping as you can see.

And the dogs and I are still enjoying our first "winter" here at home. They got their "blankies" and arranged them just so and took over the entire sofa.

When I'm having a rough week or I'm feeling down I can always count on my fur-crew to give me a perspective adjustment.
