Derek Boogaard’s Brain To Be Donated To Science

Over the weekend, Derek Boogaard, of the New York Rangers, and noted hockey tough guy enforcer was found dead in his apartment. The reason for his death is unknown as of now but reports say that an autopsy report won’t be released for a couple of weeks.

People immediately were reminded of another former NHL tough guy enforcer, Bob Probert, who also died at an early age because of the number of fights the two partook in during their NHL careers and the repeated blows to the head they received.

NFL Investigating Lockout Contact Claims

No one really knows what’s going on in the world of professional football ever since the players were locked out, then the lockout was lifted, but eventually only to have the lockout put back on. It’s been a crazy off-season in which fans, players, coaches, trainers, managers, etc., don’t really have a clue as to what’s happening.

No one will probably know until the NFL and the players come to an agreement and reach a deal to put a new CBA in place. Until then we’re stuck waiting around trying to figure out what’s happening.

Brandon League Hasn’t Blown Closer’s Role Yet

Seattle Mariners closer Brandon League couldn’t have asked for a better start to his 2011 MLB regular season as he went 9-for-9 in save opportunities with a 2.08 ERA. A 100% save conversion rate is pretty darn good.

Then League had a horrendous week and his manager Eric Wedge had to come out and defend League saying he’s still the Mariners closer before the start of the Mariners-Indians game that would later be postponed due to heavy rain. League’s the closer for now, anyway.

While the Dallas Mavericks still await the winner of the Memphis Grizzlies-Oklahoma City Thunder series to see who they’ll be facing off against in the Western Conference finals after the Grizzlies forced a Game 7 by winning Game 6 95-83 on Friday night we already know that the Eastern Conference finals will pit the #1 seeded Chicago Bulls against the #2 seeded Miami Heat.

San Jose Sharks Advance To Western Conference Finals

The Western Conference finals match-up has been set after the San Jose Sharks avoided a historic collapse and won Game 7 of their Western Conference semi-finals series against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.

All the pressure was on the Sharks as they went into Game 7 having blown a 3-0 series lead and watched the Red Wings win three straight games of their own to tie the series at 3-3.

Jaromir Jagr Could Return To Penguins

From the moment former Pittsburgh Penguins legend Jaromir Jagr played his last game in the NHL and took his talents to play for the KHL’s Avangard Omsk in Russia people have wondered when he’d once again play in the NHL and come back to North America.

Well, the wait for Jagr’s NHL return might be over next season. After some speculation he might come back and play for the Edmonton Oilers the past couple of seasons, Jagr could very well make a return not only to the NHL but to the team of his glory days, the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Joe Mauer Not Sure When He Will Return

The Minnesota Twins currently sit in last place in the AL Central and need all the help they can get to help claw their way back to the top. Yes, Francisco Liriano threw a no-hitter but he can’t do that every game all year. At some point the Twins’ bats are going to have to come up with a win.

Unfortunately their best hitter and best player, all-star catcher Joe Mauer, has been on the disabled list since April 14 and he’s unsure of when he’ll be returning to the Minnesota line-up.

NFL And Players Next Round Of Mediation Talks Set For May 16

While all the talk about the NFL and the de-certified NFLPA as of late has been focused on the lockout and whether or not the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit will be issuing a ruling on the NFL’s motion for a permanent stay on the lockout there is a mediation session that’s going to be held between both sides on May 16 in Minneapolis.

Low Rated Helmets Lead To Greater Risk of Concussions In NFL

Virginia Tech researchers conducted a study on football helmets that was led by professor Stefan Duma of biomedical engineering at Virginia Tech. The study gave helmets a 1-5 star rating and predicted concussion risk. The results that came back might scare and confuse you.

The results of the study found that 38% of players in the NFL last season decided to wear a helmet made by Riddell that was the second lowest rated helmet when it comes to reducing the risk of getting a concussion.

Grizzlies @ Thunder Game 5 Preview

It’s going to be hard for any other game in the Memphis Grizzlies-Oklahoma City Thunder’s Western Conference semi-finals match-up to live up to what they did in Game 4.

The Thunder and Grizzlies played in a triple overtime thriller Monday night in a back and forth game that had both teams leading by double digits at one point and having those leads erased. The Grizzlies twice tied the game late; once in the 4th quarter and once in the first overtime with late second three pointers.
