Recently I took $25 from PokerNews in some stupid Partypoker promotion. I've participated in similar promos before, but I had to read lots of articles and answer some difficult quiz questions there. Pokernews does not seem to require any tests. They just give the money away for nothing.

How I do know about this? Well, when I signed up I have provided them with a photo and an email came back saying that my photo was inappropriate. Strange, as I did not send my naked picture ;) Then I started writing them and a lovely support girl told me that she was transferring the money herself to everyone from her Pokernews account. This means that Pokernews give the money from their own pocket as they also promise additional $25 from PartyPoker if you play something.

Why did I say that I've robbed them? Pokernews have this requirement to download PatryPoker using their link. I had my Party account for a long time already (do not remember where I have downloaded it from) and most probably it was not from Pokernews. Of course, I have never deposited any money, so I downloaded it once again, created a new account, added the bonus code from their site and filled the registration form. And they have transferred me the money! I, unfortunately, lost it immediately, so there's no way they could benefit from me. And somehow I do not feel like cheating, despite the promo rule that 1 person can only have 1 PartyPoker account.

Are there any other promos where I could get some free money? If so, it would be great to list them and see if it is worth 5 minutes of download and registration.<div class="feedflare">

Day 2a is another success.

Ivo “the chessmaster” Donev, played stable all day long, and never really put his tournament life on the line during the whole day. It is amazingly hard taking any chips from Ivo, and he is always very aware of what type of players he is fighting against and is able to change his game after how they play. Ivo is leaving the day with 116.500.

Ramzi Jelassi has also made another glorious day, even though he had a few set backs, but he always fighted his way back by stealing and stealing and stealing. “My arm hurts after all the raising I’ve done today, seriously” is one quote that could summarize his day, in the end he must have been involved in 80% of all the pots and winning maybe 90% of them. This gives him 107.300 for day 3 on Friday.

Toni Ojala, our Finnish champion had a day without any big action, he lost one pot early with A10 vs 10J, and then he doubled up with AA vs KK. Then of course he was involved in some smaller pots, but nothing major, the cards wasn’t on his side today, but to be able to make it through the day shows that he is a poker player that can play the players and not only the cards. 60.700 for Toni.

To sum up things we had 1476 players entering this day and 630 of them got a ticket through to day 3, the average for them is around 94.000, but that is not an official number. They are all playing on Friday as there is a free day on Thursday and day 2b tomorrow that is another day of action as we will have 4 RedKings players playing!

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps should “get another gold medal for- “LOVE MAKING!” straight from the lips of stripper Theresa White (FYI she’s smoking hot! Google her!). Supposedly our boy of Beijing hit that for 3 hours straight!!

And they said all that bong toking would leave him out of shape.
On top of all that, Phelps been known to be schooled by the master pros @ poker too! Dammmmnn… son!

Now we all seen his secret for success — he be hittin’ that bong like any good ol’ American SOB. Which is dope for the doped. But forrealz tho, I don’t know why they be hatin’ on his multi-tasking skills. Is poker addiction even a bad thing when you get to stackin’ chips real high (while you’re gettin’ high at that) and rubbin’ elbows amongst the high stakes tables? I heard he be switchin’ his game over to online poker rooms too so that means my odds of running into my new idol is THAT much better now!

Thanks Mike, without you, I never thought I had a big brother to look up to. But I got one. And he’s American. And all them haters should leave him the MUCK alone!!!!

If it were up to me I'd make it to every one. This season I missed 4 weeks out of (I think) 19. That's more than 20%. That's a big handicap to overcome.Well after making my return after a couple of missed games, I found on the stat sheet that I was about 40 points out of the final spot on the Championship roster with 4 games to go. Extremely difficult, but doable.I had three players between me and that 10th place spot that I would have to leapfrog as well in order to make it. Keeler, Dog Boy and Jonathan, if my memory serves correct. Or maybe it was 4 others with Rocky thrown in the mix. Whatever it was, we were all chasing Darlene.So began my monumental task. I put in a solid effort that week, finishing just in the money (actually, it had been the bubble until we all agreed to take $20 out of the first place spot and give it to 4th). Keeler, one of the players I had been chasing had been just surviving with a micro-stack. He made a late comeback and knocked me out on a hand where I had a decent made hand and he had a good draw.So a good showing at first was soured by one of the players I was chasing going on to win that tournament, distancing himself further. I put in a couple more good weeks, picking up points and making my late-season charge. At the end of the second to last week, I waited around for the updated stats.Keeler was in 10th, 11 points ahead. Rocky was in 11th, only 2 points in front, and Jonathan and I were tied for 12th. One game to go, I knew I had to have a good night the final game. 11 points was a fair amount, but Tommy Keeler was the type of player who could crush the competition from start to finish, or go out first. I figured if I put in a good enough performance to pick up 11 points on Tommy, then passing Rocky and Jonathan would likely take care of itself. And if the cards fell so that I couldn't catch Tommy, or Jonathan or Rocky did better than I, Darlene was sitting there in 9th place only 15 points ahead. But Darlene tends to hang around for a while week to week, picking up points, so that was a real long shot.I was feeling good. I was confident, playing well, and proud of the fact I had moved up as much as I had in the three weeks prior. I showed up at Harry's itching to make one final push. Then I saw the updated stats. Apparently Patty, in cleaning house, had waylaid or gotten rid of Harry's poker stuff. After redoing the standings I wasn't 11 points behind Keeler, I was 21 points out. There was almost no chance. And having KK against AA to be knocked out of that final tournament only sealed the deal. It was disheartening.But alas, here came one of my ideas from the off-season: the end-of-year satellite tournaments for those who finished outside the top 10. What I thought would be 3 satellites I later learned would be 5. The first two I could make it to, but the third was out of bounds. We had company coming from out of town (Another missed game, argh!). I was informed the final satellite would also be a rebuy/add-on tourney with the rebuy period being 6 blind levels long! There's no way I could afford that one, being out of work, so I was down to 3 shots to make it to the dance.What I expected would be a hotly contested opportunity turned out to be scarcely attended! Harry was there to deal. Patty played in the satellite, as did the two Genes. Then there was me. Some calls were made to see if anyone else would play, and Josh Angotti said he'd be there, but late. So we played 5 handed poker (with only 4 players for the first 20 minutes).Play proceeded quickly, and being hit with two blinds every five hands, Josh was at a bigger disadvantage than you'd think showing up 20 minutes late. It was very interesting poker. Usually when you get down to 4 or 5 handed the blinds are getting quite large, meaning it's a lot of preflop and on the flop play. This was quite different.I had a good run of cards early, though the starting hands I played were not powerhouses. The passive play of the game let me play a lot of hands, especially in position. I flopped one straight, turned the nut flush and got out to an early lead.A good run of starting hands allowed me to grow my lead even further. A couple of AKs, an AQ, pocket Jacks and pocket tens. Though I did lose one of those AK hands to Gene III's all-in reraise with 77. That proved to be a crucial hand for III.Then there was Gotti, playing somewhat short-stacked and getting cold-decked. I figured once the blinds went up he'd have to shove with his small stack. So there I am, with Gene II calling on the button and Gotti completing from the small blind. I figured Josh didn't have a pair or two big cards or he'd have pushed, so I looked down at my pocket 5's and figured I was certainly better than Gotti.But Gene in the pot was somewhat problematic. He didn't raise, but he rarely did preflop, so it was still possible he had a hand that had me crushed, so I didn't want to set Josh all-in right away in case Gene came along for the ride. So I made a raise large enough to commit Josh to the pot if he was going to play. Gene folded and Josh thought for a short time before shoving. I was almost certain it would be a race. Until Gotti turned over 33! I was wrong, he had a pair and didn't shove, but it actually turned out to be a much better situation for me.The deck was brutal to him though, as the 3 he caught on the turn to pull ahead gave me an open-ended straight draw and he lost to my straight when the 7 fell on the river. He was a huge dog in the pot from the beginning, but to have your hopes dashed like that was just cruel. Gotti took it... rather well.I got lucky on a couple more hands, splitting pots where I was outkicked by 1 rank when higher cards hit the board. But the biggest game-changer for me was when Gene III reraised another of my preflop raises. I had laid down several times to his reraises, and was starting to believe he was pushing me around a fair amount of the time. I saw AJ suited and figured it was a good time to make a stand. I was dejected when he turned over AK off-suit. A miracle board of 555QQ led to a split pot where I never had much of a chance, and I was still alive.Three handed, Gene II was micro stacked in the small blind with $525 total, I think it was with $200-$400 blinds and a $25 ante. He shoved all-in blind, Gene III folded on the button and I found QQ in the hole. You figure in that situation you have an overpair, but Gene actually had KJ. He flopped a J too, but didn't improve further.Heads up against Gene III it came down to one critical hand. AQ off-suit on the small blind/button, I put in a raise (didn't do a ton of preflop raising heads up) and once again Gene III came over the top of me all-in. The two times during this satellite I had called him in the same spot he had 77 once and AK the other time. But heads up AQ was just way too good a hand, especially with the good pot odds. So in the final hand I called him down and his TJ suited fell short.I was elated to win the game and nab my spot in the final tournament, and to also have a bit of a change in fortune, as this season was defined, for me, by running cold and suffering bad beats. But I was still a little disappointed that I wouldn't be playing the other satellite tournaments. It was a lot of fun, and played very differently than our regular season matches.But at least I won't be missing any more games this season, after all.<div class="feedflare">

While almost anyone can learn the game, very few are consistent winners.&#160;
There are several schools of thought when it comes to theory. The classic work is written by Doyal Brunson and is titled Super System: A Course in Power Poker. Brunson advocates playing extremely aggressively. While Brunson is generally recognized as one of the best and most influential poker players of all time, Super System was written by the 70's and is considered by many to be dated. The other problem with Super System is that by now, most serious poker players have read it, making it a strategy that many people can instantly recognize and thwart!
On the other hand, there are several strategies that are significantly harder or impossible to detect. One is the simple use of statistics. Understanding the odds of hitting certain cards gives the player an incredible edge. From these odds a player can determine whether or not a bet is worth calling, or a hand is worth raising. Understanding these statistics offers the player an edge that is difficult to detect and even more difficult to defeat.
The other strategy worth mentioning involves bluffing. Obviously bluffing is a strategy, but without some sort of a pattern its potential is limited. One of the most effective ways to bluff is to essentially represent a hand. For example, if you are dealt a 4/3 suited, play that hand as if you were holding, say, pocket tens. This way, your betting on the hand will remain consistent. While you may lose a hand and inadvertently become exposed, it won't matter as the occurrence of your bluffs will remain completely undetectable! Part of this strategy requires a willingness to commit. One must be willing to push chips to the middle of the table with complete authority. You must play and act as if you have the best hand. There can be no doubts.
The third strategy, if one can call it that, involves watching the pros. Now that poker is televised, it has become much easier to learn. With each hand available to the watching viewer, the student can learn how the most successful players play hands, and learn to emulate. They say imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, but it could also be the quickest way to a couple of bucks.
By following these easy strategies almost any player will see real, tangible improvements to their game.<div class="feedflare">

Really? Banning OfficialPokerRankings because it provides an "unfair advantage"? Reasons why that's asinine:

1) Anyone can request to NOT have their information revealed (if you believe you're at some sort of disadvantage - take your own info off the listings)
2) It's free and open to anyone to use - if you and I both have an "advantage" then neither of us has an "advantage" (though we dispute that there really is any advantage to be had, because...)
3) It doesn't really tell you much (if anything) that you can use against another player. No hand histories, no % of times betting, folding, re-raising, hands played, VPIP, etc. No cash game history. No idea of whether you're a tight/aggressive, loose/passive, etc. player. Only results are shown. Over the long haul, they can ONLY tell you that whatever this guy does works well or doesn't work so well.
4) FullTilt provides THEIR OWN leader board information including nicely customizable leader board filtering - where's the big difference??

Reasons to allow OPR rankings to stay up:

1) For lower stakes players it IS truly important to watch your own stats move up the "rankings". OPR isn't used to "scout" other players, but to monitor your own progress (based on OPR's definition of progress).

2) When it comes to those other players - the ones most of us look at are our friends and acquaintances. Why? To monitor their hoped for progress and movement up the rankings. It's community, boys. One of the reasons you have your own FullTilt Forums. And, surprise, the forums aren't the only way to build community - many of us track friends on OPR.

3) Collusion Control - While&#160;I haven't used it for this purpose myself - I can certainly see where it could be useful to look at various in-the-money results to see if players "Ima Colludin" and "WithMe" seem to be working together in various tournies.
In poker, it's never a good idea to go on tilt - looks like that's what FullTilt has done this time though.

If you were not using Dr Neau, STP or The Tournament Director to import your results, you'd have to enter them manually through the web or iphone.
One of our users eventually commented on how slow this process was and raised a Feature Request. Well, we listened and redesigned the process to make it much quicker and easier to record your game scores!<div class="feedflare">

In poker, “the nuts” is the strongest possible hand in a given situation. “Find The Nuts” is a one-player Texas Hold ‘em training application that teaches users to learn to read the community cards.

Why is reading the community cards important?

In a real game of Texas Hold ‘em, many players look at their hole cards then look to the community cards to identify their hand. They then identify what cards they want when new community cards are dealt.

Instead, players should read the community cards to determine the best possible hand. Identifying the nuts allows a player to understand how his hand compares to other hands and whether or not he should continue to bet.

As an example, the following cards are dealt on the flop:

6 of clubs
Ace of diamonds
Ace of spades

Someone with the remaining two Aces for hole cards (pocket Aces) has the nuts. If the 5 of clubs is dealt on the turn, the player with pocket Aces still has the nuts. However, if another club, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, or 9, is dealt on the river, the nuts changes. It’s possible that someone has a straight flush, which beats 4 Aces.

Reading the community cards tells a player where his hand ranks and what his opponents may have.

In “Find The Nuts” 3-5 community cards are dealt to the center of the game screen. The rest of the 52-card deck is in a scrollable row at the bottom of the screen. A player must choose two cards from the remaining deck for his hole cards. He should ask himself, “Which cards would give me the best five-card hand?” Once he chooses two cards and submits his answer, the application will reveal the correct hole cards and the five-card hand that comprises the nuts.

Players can practice with 3, 4, or 5 community cards; “Random” lets the application choose the number of cards; and “Progressive” deals a flop, turn, and river, representing the deal of a real Texas Hold ‘em game and teaching a player to re-determine the nuts as new community cards are dealt.

Players can also practice identifying the second best hand and the third best hand, which are a little more difficult and require a more extensive analysis and understanding of the community cards.

No matter what the settings are, standard poker hand ranking applies, and a user should always remember to consider the kicker.<div class="feedflare">

Their knee-jerk arguments hearken back to a day when going and having a flutter was thought to be a one-way ticket to hell.
Today, folks know this isn’t the case, but government policies haven’t followed suit. In the UK, USA and many capitals throughout Europe, the people’s representatives haven’t realised that poker is not only an enjoyable and largely harmless activity, but it can also fill government coffers as well. In a classic case of governments overstepping their bounds, they miss out on billions of dollars – in return for which they get to tell grown, free-thinking adults what they can and can’t do with their hard-earned money.
While the UK and USA are acting like their money will never run out, at least one country is starting to get smart: Bulgaria. Officials from that nation recently gathered to brainstorm how Bulgaria can incorporate gaming into its tourism strategy, and how to find a ‘middle ground’ on online gaming.
“Gambling tourism is a resource Bulgaria has not exploited. A national gambling development programme needs to be drawn up as part of the tourism industry,” said Deputy Finance Minister Atanas Kunchev. It’s not rocket science – you promote what you have, whether it’s climate, beaches, culture or gaming. With a possible recession looming and many governments drowning in red ink, as they say in poker: “Don’t leave money on the table.”
Around the felt, that means don’t miss bets that you would have won. In government, it means don’t miss out on revenue that you could easily have had. And in the UK, that should mean giving people what they want. You don’t put a ridiculous 15 percent tax on poker websites, because no one will locate here. Thus, you get zip. A light tax would have brought job-creating websites here to be regulated and taxed. The UIGEA in the U.S. is the same type of mistake. Despite running a huge deficit, the Bush Administration is fighting online gaming in a big way.
Nothing these governments did stopped people from gaming on the Internet – all they did was miss out on billions in tax revenue that could have been used for the common good. And you can add the recent nixing of the ‘super casino’ to this list of mistakes.
There are fewer and fewer well-paying jobs around these days. We don’t need governments to protect us morally. We can do that ourselves, thank you. What we need governments to do is help protect us financially. And you don’t do that by leaving money on the table.
It’s all about Poker http://www.pokerproeurope.co.uk

One of the most common complaints in the last year has been that PokerDIY&#160;is hard to navigate. We wholeheartedly agreed with this statement and tried to work out what was wrong with the UI&#160;that hindered usability.
We came up with a few different areas that needed improvement:

    The main menu was hard to navigate and a great deal of information and resources were not being used because of this
    Certain key areas of the site were hard to find (for example, the Poker Forums)
    Many visitors come into sub pages on PokerDIY&#160;and do not see the home page first. We wanted to help them identify where they were and what they could do
    We wanted to increase the value of adverts for our sponsors and advertisers

The new skin design addressed on all these points and focused on usabilty. As you can see at the top of this page is a Breadcrumb which helps pinpoint your location within the site. We made the search box a lot more prominent - if you can't find something we encourage you to search for it. We also made it easier to sign up, log in and edit your profile. There is now a Bookmark button at the top right of every page. You can bookmark your favourite pages in Facebook, Digg etc. with ease.
The main menu got our main attention - it uses hover over drop-down menus to make it easier to find what you are looking for. Instead of 12 different menus we now have only 6. Things have been moved around a bit to make them easier to find. Every page is a little bigger and brighter and more spaced out for easier reading. We switched from Arial to Verdana font as this was easier on the eyes when scanning lots of text.
So... this is the new PokerDIY&#160;look. We hope you like it!&#160;PLEASE&#160;feedback to us your thoughts, opinions and especially your criticism - this helps us so much!&#160;<div class="feedflare">

A few days ago I made the 40 minute drive to the casino (no biggie really), signed up for a 7pm tournament and played in a cash game for about 45 minutes while I waited for the tournament to start. While I finished down a bit playing the cash game, I gained a nice advantage over some of the players once the tournament started.
In the cash game, aside from two hands, I really didn't pick up anything else to play. Playing a $2/5 spread limit hold'em game, playing too loose isn't a good strategy against skilled players. The game is small, but second to a $5/5 game, it's the biggest game offered in our state. So, lots of good players hang out in either game, depending on whichever is busier. During the daytime on a weekday, the $2/5 games build full tables while $5/5 games generally have 4-5 players with opponents playing very short sessions. So, the result is that a lot of good players are siting at $2/5...much better than you'll typically find in casinos with higher limits available.
So, I played two hands and won them both. Other than that, I saw a couple of flops, and otherwise did some internal dancing to the eclectic range of music on my iPod. Attempting to see a few flops with suited connectors and marginal hands in late position cost me a few bucks and I finished down about $20.
When the tournament started I was seated with 2 guys that were at my $2/5 table. One of them was very loose and aggressive. The other was clearly a quality player who made plays based on his reads, rather than by simply throwing chips into the pot 'hoping' opponents would fold. I also knew that he was paying attention to me at the cash table, and thought of me as a very tight player.
Early in the tournament the good player made a raise of 3 1/2 times the big blind in early position. Another player that I had read as fairly tight but with a few tricks up his sleeve called in middle position. I was seated in the #7 seat and called with KQ os. The flop came down 7,8, rag. The initial raiser opened with a solid bet of about 2/3'rds the pot. The player to his left folded and I looked at my chips for a few seconds before&#160;making a scary looking raise, a little more than twice the size of his bet. I knew he would give me credit for a big hand since he was reading me as tighter than I really am. So, that bet looked very scary to him, like I was begging for a call. He sat thinking for a solid 2 minutes before he declared that I had to have a set to make that bet. The fun part was that I knew he was 'sure' of his read, and that later I would be able to get away with a similar type of play against him.
For the next 45 minutes or so, I couldn't find a starting hand, or the right time to enter with a marginal hand either. Evey time I picked up something like 8, 10 suited in late position, someone would come out with a huge raise preflop. With the blinds going up every 20 minutes, I knew I needed to start picking up chips.
Finally I picked up pocket jacks, which at this point looked like three aces to me. In early position I raised 3 times the big blind. My cash game opponent (the one I bluffed earlier) was the only caller. The flop came A, K, rag and for some reason I knew he didn't have the ace. I think&#160;it was the fact that he&#160;flat called me preflop instead of raising&#160;like he&#160;normally did with top hands, I had him on a hand like K, J, or something in that range. Knowing he'd bet if I checked the flop, I decided to check raise him and see if I could pick up a decent pot. Well,&#160;he bet out a little more than the pot....which surprised me a bit. My first thought was that he was trying to keep me from stealing the pot from him by check raising. Again, I read this as weak, a chance to make my move, so I did by moving all-in. This was a risky play for sure, but I never had him read for the ace, so I stuck with it. He didn't wait more than 3 seconds before flipping over his K, 10 of spades.
Now, I'm not writing about this in order to say how wonderful I am. My point is that on my way home I thought about those two plays I made against the guy, and how I wouldn't have done the same thing if I'd been playing online. Reading opponents online is so much harder than it is live, so why don't I play more live poker? When I play live, every time the dealer starts to flip the cards around the table feels like an opportunity, and it's exciting to pick up the cards and see what you've got. Playing online is fun, practical, and convenient, but there is something missing when it comes to reading opponents (at least for me there is). WhileI love playing online, I'm a better live player for sure.
The next time I'm playing online&#160;I think I'm going to start paying more attention to picking up betting patterns and note taking. In fact, I have a reload bonus at Full Tilt I need to take advantage of anyway...maybe I'll go try it now;)
Good luck to everyone!<div class="feedflare">

I decided to sit in a 1/2 N/L/H game. The players at the table were mostly older men, they were playing family pots and I was playing fairly tight, I mean after all this is my bread and butter and I play to win. Anyway, I was on the button short stacked with Ten-Jack suited, I had limped in pre-flop as did everyone else, the flop comes 7h2s8d, the under the gun puts out a bet of $20.00 the gentlemen on his left calls and everyone else folds up to me, I have a inside straight draw I raise it up to $60.00 the under the gun pushes all-in and the other gentlemen folds, now being short stacked and just about pot committed I call, he turns over pocket eights showing a set, the turn comes 2d and the river 9c giving me a straight. The gentlemen takes his bad beat and doesn't say a word, another gentlemen across from me calls me a river rat, but I don't say a word to him. I couple of hands go by and I pick up JdAd in middle posistion and just limp in, the flop comes 9d3dkc giving me a back-door flush everyone checks as do I, the turn comes 5d giving me the ace high flush, again everyone checks as do I, the river comes 7s, again everyone checks in front of me so I put out a bet of $50.00 figuring I'll just take what's in the pot, at that point the man that called me a river rat yells, I want to see what you have and calls, everyone else folds, I turn over my ace high flush, the gentlemen to the right of me says wow he got the nuts, at that point the man that called me a river rat jumps up, his chair fly's back and he punches the table in rage and starts yelling at me, so now I'm thinking to myself things might get out of control with him if I continue playing. At that point I didn't want any problems so I got up and left the casino thinking about May, 29th 2008.

What happened on May, 29th 2008 is disturbing to poker players like myself. Perez, a self-employed long-distance truck driver, had a disagreement with Prince inside the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City over a seat at a poker table, When Perez left the poker room at about 2:45 p.m., Prince followed him into the valet parking area off Virginia Avenue, Perez told Superior Court Judge Bernard E. DeLury in Mays Landing that Prince hit him several times in the face with a cane and that in defense, he pulled out a pocketknife and stabbed Prince several times, the prosecutor said. An autopsy concluded Prince died from a wound to the left cheek that severed his carotid artery and caused him to bleed to death, Housel said. Prince also had stab wounds to the mid-back, left lower abdomen and to the left upper abdomen, the prosecutor said. Prince was pronounced dead at the AtlaniCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City.

Is this what poker players like myself have to worry about every time we enter a casino?

Why? Well, Saulle got extremely lucky, and he has decided it’s time for his first big tournament.

How did Frank Saulle get lucky? Well, he was playing a 5/10 live game (No Limit Texas Hold’em), when the game started to die. Saulle's $1000 starting stack grew to about $7000, and he ended up 3-handed. Two guys Black and Hopkins, both had about $3k, when Saulle picked up KK UTG. Saulle raised it pre flop, and saw a re-raise and another re-raise ahead of him. Saulle knew one of them had Aces, thought about it, but decided to push his hole stack. Both players Black and Hopkins called Saulle's pre flop All-In and when the cards were flipped over, Both players Black and Hopkins had pocket Aces. The flop came Jh4sTs, not looking good for Saulle. The turn was way better, an off-suit Qd, giving Saulle a straight draw, giving Saulle an extra two outs, now Saulle didn’t want a King, he needed a nine, Well, you guessed it. Saulle hit the nine on the river, scooping the $9k+ pot. Bad beat for Black and Hopkins, but hey, thats poker.

When asked, Saulle stated, I can’t fold pocket kings pre-flop in a cash game. Frank Saulle said he is investing part of that money for any major tournament and hope to do as good as he did here tonight.

I used to be somewhat of a heads-up specialist - I played over 5,200 heads-up matches in the last 4 years. Prior to that I was a decent player in a variety of tournament structures. After a year or two of only playing heads-up, I finally decided to start playing some other games again. The problem was that while I played so much heads-up, I&#160;became an absolutely terrible player at tables of 6 or more. I became WAY too aggressive, wanted to win every single pot, and never believed my opponent held a hand.
Playing so much heads-up makes you that way (if you're any good at heads-up anyway). When I got back to full tables, I&#160;got so bored so fast that I would start pushing people around with any two cards I had, regardless of their play, since I wasn't paying attention anyway. I would play Mahjong between hands because my adhd was getting the better of me. The problem was that I just didn't care anymore.
Well, after several months of playing like a total donkey, I finally decided to give my old game a try again. A few days ago I sat down with the intention of playing 10 sit-n-go's, with the intention of winning and playing smart. I&#160;was feeling patient, and the goal was to prove to myself that I could still do it when I wanted to. To be perfectly honest, I expected to take a bad beat on the bubble at some point, get pissed off, then do my typical 'run everyone over until I give away all my chips' thing. Much to my surprise, I didn't implode. Here are my results:
$20 SNG's at FT.
4 wins
2 - 2nd place finishes
3 - 3rd place finishes
9 cashes out of 10!! For me playing at a full table, that's the equivalent of my cat parting the Red Sea.
I'm still not sure how I did that, and it wasn't one of those days where the deck was hitting me real hard either. I felt like I worked for my results, like I&#160;earned them. So now I&#160;feel like there is hope for me again and I'm going to give it another shot...possibly tonight. If I do, I'll update it here, although I don't know why anyone would care to read it, lol. I have a little Full Tilt bonus site that I'm working on atm, when I'm tired of doing that for the night, maybe I'll play a little and see if the other night was a fuke or not. ;)&#160;
BTW, maybe I'll write a big article on my heads-up tournament strategy here soon. That's a game I know well, and I think I can help some players improve their heads-up results.<div class="feedflare">

It’s only been 40 minutes at a 2/4 hold’em, online table where you were determined from the start to play smart, aggressive poker. It’s Friday night and you know the competition is going to be solid. You have been watching all the players and now have 4 of them pegged, while two others have just joined, and the other 3 are have been mixing it up good, playing a lot of pots.You made one mistake earlier, not knowing a “rock” had the goods, when you tried to buy a pot with a check-raise on the turn, on the come, to a draw that of course, never came. You consider your busted play, and then justify it as an investment for another hand. The rest of your losses all came while seeing cheap flops in late position, except that once, when the small blind raised you, and then it came back around. You knew you had to call just for pot odds sake. The flops have not been hitting you yet.Oh my Poker God, does this sound like me a thousand times? Yes, quite. Here’s the thing. A lot of times when you’re in a hand you shouldn’t have been, you try and justify how you lost the hand. It’s a natural human tendency to do this, and poker players know this all too well. The truth is, you looked at a KQos from early position and then had to answer a raise from the unpredictable player two seats down. You thought it was a good move, but you are heads up with KQos, he has position on you and the flop comes Ks 9s 2h. You have hit top pair and want to show him the flop hit you. You bet. He calls. 2h turned. That didn’t help him, and you really want him to fold now so put out your 4 bucks, and then, the worst thing happens, he raises. Now you know you’re screwed. He has AK or AA, maybe even a boat, but he may just be trying to buy this. Not only that, those pot odds demand you to call. You do, knowing you are going to check the river, and have to call one more bet to see his AK suited. Herein lays the value of a tool you can use on your computer, called a poker calculator.Poker Calculators are handy tools for online play that give you (at the very least) accurate pot odds to know if you should be in a hand in the first place, but also to offer the right advice for checking, folding, or betting in any given situation. Now consider this - the right advice from a poker calculator is actually the mathematically correct decision. As all experienced poker players will tell you, that is just part of the equation. There is absolutely no guarantee that a persistent maniac doesn’t have your two pair DEAD-TO-RIGHT with a made straight. That’s the intellectual part of the game. But poker is a game that persistently challenges not only your intellect, but your emotions as well. What may be surprising to you is that a poker calculator can help you check your emotions.That may be odd news to some, because a poker calculator is an inherently mathematical odds gadget, which would seemingly help you in certain hands – as well it does. But what it does even better is keep you out of the money losing hands in the first place. Take that KQos for example. I have tested a lot of the online calculators, and there isn’t one of them that advises you to come in for a raise, early position. Those cards look good, especially at a loose table, against foolish opponents, but it is absolutely a hand to play in position, with aggression, and not early with weakness where a negative EV is guaranteed.Sometimes it is hard to look at hands and lay them down. But it’s much easier to fold when your online poker calculator is flashing bright bold warning colors at you, reminding you how much –EV your hand has. This is especially crucial when you have just won or lost a hand or two previously, because at that point it’s much more likely you will play your current hand as a result of previous hands. You may recognize that description as being on tilt. Now if you had a piece of advice to prevent you from tilting twice, three, or even 6 times during a session, wouldn't you call that valuable psychological help?<div class="feedflare">

One time I deposited $50 on fulltilt won like $5000 playing tournaments (two tournaments actually $27 buying i think third place both times) payed tuition that was it. Put 100 from time to time won/lose some times i would win like$ 500> in a session playing Omaha and moving up in limits really quick so poker has been good to me.Any way this is the thing I am not currently working or attending classes so I got the free bankroll used the pokerstrategy and the rake kill me , then i got another one from Titan and when all the way to 400 in a day, cleared the 5000 points in about 5 days when all the way to $600 playing consistently 4 tables cash game SH NL50 got impatience lost like $300 moving in limits put everything on black(roulette) and well I am on the street. So now I am thinking in putting my own money so that I could take it seriously $500> more lessHere are the questions :Can someone make a living ( a modest one $100> a day ) playing SH NL50 I think I can beat this level whit out risking to much: if so what site is the best site for this kind of play.What kind of restrains should i have:play how many hours,put a lose/ win limit, play only one kind of game, when should I quit a game.How can I take poker seriously?<div class="feedflare">

They give new players a chance to try the game out without risking anything - while at the same time giving them a chance to win real money. The poker sites win too because it’s a relatively cheap way to get players in the door and trying out their software.If you haven’t heard of poker freerolls before, they are just free online poker tournaments that give away real cash prizes. All you have to do to join in on the action is choose a poker site, register an account and get to playing. It’s really cool because you don’t have to deposit any money, register your credit card or anything. There really are no strings attached.Freerolls are the best option for poker players who want to start a bankroll but don’t have the extra money lying around. In fact, I’ve known several poker players over the years who got their start playing freeroll tournaments. Some of these guys have built 5 and 6 figure bankrolls without depositing a single dollar.Chris Ferguson, winner of the 2000 WSOP Main Event, took a challenge to turn $0 into $10,000 in 2007 at Full Tilt Poker. He started out playing nothing but freerolls until he earned enough to move up through the limits. He completed the challenge within a year, accumulating $10,000 from scratch!Stories like Ferguson’s are not that uncommon at all. Like I said, many players have started a bankroll from scratch - all it takes is a little time and persistence. Poker freerolls run every day but thousands of people play so it usually takes a while to make a cash and run with it. But if you keep at it, you can do the same thing Chris did.$10K Bankroll Challenge - Chris Ferguson StyleThe key to winning freerolls is patience. The early stages are full of wild players making all kinds of crazy moves. It can be a rollercoaster of a ride but it’s full of opportunities. All you have to do is play tight and wait for the big hands. As the tournaments progress, the crazy payers weed themselves out and you can play some serious poker.The best part of all is that almost everyone you play against in a typical freeroll is an inexperienced poker player. If you read up on basic tournament strategy and play in enough freerolls, you’ll eventually take one down for a nice bit of cash. After that you can then switch to buyin tournaments or ring games and grind out a legitimate bankroll.Poker freerolls are also good for experienced cash game players looking to expand into tournament play. They provide great tournament experience without costing you a fortune in entry fees. The extra money you can win is just gravy on top if you’re in it for the practice.Tournaments with actual buyins play a little tighter but you’d still be surprised at how loose the play can be. A lot of it comes from people looking build big stacks early or bust out early and save the time. Your freeroll experience will translate nicely to buy-in tournaments. Again, all it takes is patience. All you have to do is sit back and let the crazy players send their chips your direction. Before you know it, you’ll have $10,000 too!Good luck!<div class="feedflare">

    AK Suited
    QQQ
    A8
    AK
    J8 suited flush
    Full house

A) These are the last 6 hands (in 6 games) that I have had in poker and have been knocked out (No limit of course)&#160;by

    AK Suited&#160;&#160; -&gt;&#160;Beaten by 6 8 off suite that linked up a straight
    QQQ&#160; -&gt; Other guy had 3 Q&#160;too with higher kicker
    A8&#160; -&gt; beaten by KK
    AK&#160; -&gt; beaten by 66
    J8 suited flush&#160;&#160; -&gt; beaten by Ace nut flush
    Full house -&gt; beaten by quad Qs

If I believed in luck I would say I was having a run of bad luck - I&#160;seem to get given very good cards which get pipped by not so good starting cards. I think I'd rather get rubbish cards and lose than keep hitting good cards and being pipped by extraordinary hands..... Whinge whinge whinge.
Ok, good, I&#160;got that off my chest. One advantage of having your own poker blog is that you can whinge about your bad beats ;)
These results mean that I&#160;go to the bottom of the Australian Poker League (well Sydney Poker League to be precise) - from winning it for 11th months of last year to the very bottom of the poker league scoreboard - oh the shame ;)
So, without further whinging, here are the results from the last 2 sessions. It must be said that everyone is playing very well - Sandy and Lee and consistienlty placing and Dave and Morgs are also rising fast. Jeff is still Jeff....

I have been spending some time in Atlantic City while the 2009 World Series of Poker circuit event goes on. As you know poker can be a solitary pursuit. However, when I stepped into the poker room at Caesar's, It felt like I was stepping into my office. Everyone was in a festive mood. Relaxed having a good time and playing poker with friends. It was like taking candy from a baby, just another day at the office. I decided to sit in a low stake, no limit. The table was super aggressive, and it was very difficult to get a read on the players, so I needed to play super tight. Ten minutes into the game they were out to steal a lot of my chips, raising and re-raising every bet I made, it was like they were out for blood, so instead of getting my chips, at the highest expense they got a little poker 101. I set traps, I nailed them to the wall, I doubled up fifteen minutes after sitting down, I then got up and said, the lesson for the day is over! The players did not like that comment, they went on tilt. I then left and went back to the hotel. It was a good trip after all.Frank Saulle...<div class="feedflare">

But alas, there are literally hundreds of poker sites on the Internet. How do you discriminate between all of these available sites, to find that desired site ?
There are several key criteria that you should be aware of, in your quest to find the poker site that is perfect for you.  Understanding these criteria, and being able to use them as a basis for comparison, will significantly simplify your selection process:&#160;

    Free Poker - If you are looking to play online poker for pure recreation, and not for money, ensure that the site you are interested in accommodates "free" players.  Most online poker sites do cater to free players.&#160;
    Software Download vs. Web-based - Most, if not all, online poker sites require you to download their poker client software onto your computer system to run.  If you are adverse to downloading such software onto your system, then you might want to check to see if the poker site alternatively has a web-based poker interface, which allows you to play poker on the site from within your browser.  Software installs run the potential risk of viruses and/or adware being loaded onto your system (although most of the reputable firms would never do that), but software installs on your computer generally run a lot faster than web-based sessions.  Software installations harness the power of your local PC's CPU, whereas web-based interfaces rely on downloading any screen real estate updates over the Internet during play. This can be slow, particularly, if you are running over a slow internet connection (e.g., a dialup line).  Hence, if you are after speed, select local software installations; if you are concerned about your computer's safety or cannot afford the disk space used by a software installation, select a web-based poker site.&#160;
    Methods of Deposit/Withdrawal - If you are planning to play poker for money over the Internet, it is very important to consider the methods of deposit and withdrawal that a poker site supports.  Many of these sites permit major credit cards to be used, which seem to be the universal deposit mechanism of choice.  Others permit the use of bank transfer, ACH transfer, checks, and wire transfer from banks.  Most poker sites also support some form of 3rd party eWallets, which provide an intermediary between banking institutions and the poker site itself.  The main criteria to look at are: 1) What methods of deposit/withdrawal are supported by the poker site, and how many of these methods are supported by the locale that you live in ?;  2) Is it legal to fund/withdraw to/from a poker site, from the jurisdiction that you are playing in ?; 3) What are the fees associated with the 3rd party eWallet companies that you are able to use, and how reliable are they (this latter question can be researched on some of the poker message forum boards) ?&#160;
    Locale Restrictions - Some poker sites restrict the playing for money (and even free play sometimes), based on your locale, and the laws governing gambling in your locale.  You should check with the laws of your local jurisdiction and check with the poker site, to see if there are any imposed restrictions on play, based on your locale.&#160;
    Support - You should definitely look at the methods of support that a poker site offers.  Poker sites generally provide one (or more) methods of support that include: telephone support, fax support, Email support, and live chat support. The more of these that a poker site offers, the better.  For telephone support, check and see if the poker site offers toll-free support from your playing jurisdiction or not.&#160;
    Game Variety - Depending on your level of poker playing expertise and your interest in variety, it is important to determine which game types the poker site supports.  Almost all of the sites offer Texas Holdem, but depending on your level of interest, you should check to see if they offer games like Five and Seven Card Stud, Omaha Poker (and all of its variations), Blackjack (not poker, but often included as a game option), Stud (and its variations), Draw poker, Tournament support, and limit and pot limit games.  Tournaments in particular are very popular with online poker sites, and some site tournaments offer very large prize pools.&#160;
    Bonuses - Most, but not all, of the poker sites offer some form of bonus to the player, when you initially sign up with the site.  Each site's bonus is somewhat different, but of the one's that offer first time bonus, it is usually predicated on a minimum initial deposit.  Many bonuses are also calculated based on the amount of money deposited and spent on the site. Additionally, many sites offer reload bonuses, which are bonuses that are offered to existing customers, beyond their initial deposit bonus, and as an incentive to keep you as a customer.&#160;
    Graphics and Useability - This is a very important consideration.  Every poker site has a different look and feel to it.  If you are going to be playing poker for money, it is important that you feel comfortable with the screen graphics and your ability to navigate (via mouse or keyboard clicks) through the poker program.  If you feel uncomfortable at all with the poker site, you should definitely not consider playing at it for money.  You should always test a poker site out in "free" mode first, before actually considering it for real-money wagering.&#160;
    Game Features - You should always consider the game features that are available with a given poker site.  Game  features such as hand history, multiple simultaneous playing windows, player notes, audible and visual indicators, player statistics, connection status indicator, player chat, turbo games, and screen options should always be considered.&#160;
    Rake - Rake is the amount of the pot that the poker site takes (as part of its fee for doing business), from each hand.  You should always be aware of how much rake a poker site takes (compared to another site).  Poker sites usually use a Weighted Contribution rake method or an Average Contribution method, when calculating rake.  Obviously, the lower the rake, the more money you will take home on hand wins, but this criteria by itself should not dictate which poker site you use, since all of the above factors need to be taken into consideration as well.&#160;

In summary, the aforementioned criteria should always be used, when deciding which Poker site is best for you. Depending on your preferences, some of these criteria should be given more weight than others. Happy Poker site hunting !!

For the poker events on TV and in any casino the one that controls that game and pushes you pots are the dealers and most of them don't get the recognition they deserve.I have been a dealer for the last four years and a player. But for most of my life I have always taken care of the people who are in charge of taken care of me. What I mean here is by tipping. I see it every day dealers (including myself) get stiffed on pots being pushed to people. I see all these tips on websites about how to get the biggest pot or how to trap the donkey for the biggest payout but not anywhere can I find a way for the dealer to make a little more since this is his means of income. The big pots people crave and write about in this game can sound more often out of greed and a dealer just wants to go home and pay his bills and be able to live comfortably.This is my rant and my opinion only on the subject so I am sure to get a lot of disagreements out of it but here it goes. I go to work every day trying to make a living and we have a lot of regulars that play. Most of which we hope not to push a pot to because we know we don't make any money in doing so. We hear all sorts of phrases like pick me dealer but our thinking is why would we want to pick you and give you money when you don't want to pick me to give money too? These same people have no problem tipping the wait staff for getting them a pop when it's only 15 feet away. Anyone else see something wrong with that picture?Here's my views on it when I tip a dealer and I will also try to throw in some rebuttals I have heard as well.I think of it like this. The dealer is like a stock broker who you are investing your money to but the rewards could come faster than one with no penalties for cashing out. When you invest your money with a stock broker they take a percentage of money earned and people have no problem in doing up to 15% but they have a problem tipping a dealer 10% or worse nothing to a dealer when they win a big pot. Some rebuttals I have heard on this subject would be the dealer is not risking his money in these pots. Well that's not entirely true. A stock broker doesn't risk money but a dealer that keeps pushing pots to the guy that doesn't tip and taking money away from the ones that do is facing not having much money at the end of the night to pay his own bills. Not to mention the fact that the dealer is not making you call with gut busters or the hundred dollar open-ender but if your risk turns out a good one and the pot is being pushed to you the dealer is also not making you stay. You may cash that big win out at any time. But the dealers get paid to deal. Yes they do but in most states it is barely minimum wage and because of it being a tipping profession the casino (and Uncle Sam) can tax them up to 45%. So if you win (profit) a $400 pot and tip a dollar that's tipping 65 cents which is less than 1%.Before I get bombarded with me as a greedy person here let me stop that right now. I tip this way and is just my opinion. I do not tip this way because I am a dealer. I have always tipped wait staff and bar staff %10 + and after my dealing career is over (most likely due to arthritis or carpal tunnel) I will still tip this way. Feel free to add comments good or bad and I will comment back on them.<div class="feedflare">

I'd love to hear what your league has created.

Here are a few CPL examples:

The Missouri Chip - named after "The Show Me State", the Missouri Chip is used by a folding player and requires that the winning player show his hand. Meant to inform/educate a player on styles of play, etc. You can read more about the Missour Chip at:
http://cplpoker.blogspot.com/2008/11/home-poker-league-tip-missouri-chip.html

Hand Names: "The Wally" and "The Durand". 5/2 and pocket 9s respectively - named after players in the league. The former as it was his favorite hand, the latter (well, that's a far longer story).

Other items - "Potpourri Flop": while a Rainbow flop is simply one of three different suits the Potpourri Flop is a fancier name for an "uncoordinated flop" - somethin' the ladies might like to say.

So, let's hear your creations.....<div class="feedflare">

I did well. After stepping away from it I recently decided to return. I mean, it's free to play, you can win weekly prizes and then there are the big offerings (like seats to WSOP events) that can be had. Plus, one of our home poker league members (who I recruited from the bar league I was in and who kept playing after I left - won just such a WSOP seat last year - Event 2 for $1500). I figured - "hey, it's my turn now!".Now, I'm back at - in the Free Poker Tour Network with a different home league member who plays there. The first 8 week session has concluded. I finished in second (from about 35 semi-regular players), which means I've qualifed for "regions" (at regions you qualify for state and at state you win the grand prizes - about 15% of the field advances at each level).But, here's the quandry - 85% of these players (at the local level) are total donks. Loose aggressive dunkards willing to put in chips at any time (with any hand). I've tried the "Tight Aggressive" approach (this actually works best overall) - simply waiting for your premium hands, raising it up preflop and betting more when it hits. And, I've tried the loose passive prefop limps (which seems pretty standard - it's after the flop that the chips start flying) - but with 7 of 8 players in the pot you rarely know if you're actually ahead (they'll call anything). Some of our other home league members have commented to me about how they seem to think that the bar league players' games in our league have deteriorated the longer they're involved in free poker. And, while my second place was great in the free poker - I'm in 11th of 12 in tour home poker league after 6 weeks.So, your thoughts? Bar (pub, free) poker : good practice or reinforcer of bad habits?And, check out our blog and podcast at: http://cplpoker.blogspot.comKaraoke Phil<div class="feedflare">
