The European Poker Tour (EPT) made its annual UK stop, hosted at London’s Victoria Casino. 730 players started out in the £5,250 main event which created a total prize pool of £3,540,500. The first place prize everyone was trying to win was set at £850,000.

After four days play the tournament had reached the final table stage of the event with the last eight battling it out to be the EPT UK champion of 2009. The notable name to make the final table was the 2008 WSOP champion Peter Eastgate, who was well positioned to go deep in this event in second place in the chip rankings. Here is how the final table looked at the start of play.

Final Table Chip Rankings

1st Aaron Gustavson 7,140,000
2nd Peter Eastgate 3,535,000
3rd Martin Gudvangen 3,510,000
4th Nikolai Senninger 2,175,000
5th Dominic Cullen 2,105,000
6th Raymond Wu 1,535,000
7th Rui Milhomens 1,100,000
8th Karim Bennani 845,000

It wasn’t until after the first break that the first elimination came about. Short stacked Karim Bennani didn’t have much luck in the early stages and found his stack whittled down to just 290,000. He decided to move all in holding and was dominated by Rui Milhomens with Bennani managed to pair his three on the flop showing but was in danger as Milhomens was drawing to a flush. The Turn proved to be the decisive card as the completed the flush meaning Bennani was drawing dead with one card to come.

Shortly after Raymond Wu looked to be in reasonable shape when pushing all in with and was called by Aaron Gustavson with That was until the flop came down putting Gustavson firmly in the lead. The on the turn finished off Wu as he was already drawing dead when the completed the board.

The next elimination came when Milhomen raised from an early position to 230,000. Everyone folded until the action reached Peter Eastgate who was on the big blind. After going into the tank to what seemed like an age he decided to put Milhomen to the test by moving all in. Milhomen didn’t seem happy but reluctantly decided to call. It turned out to be a race with Milhomen having pocket eight’s to Eastgate’s The first four cards down missed both players although Eastgate picked up more outs with a straight draw. The river card brought the giving Eastgate the pot, eliminating Milhomen into 6th place.

When the next elimination hand came we had exactly the same cards up against each other with all the money in pre flop. This time Dominic Cullen had the and Gustavson was holding the pocket eights. The first card out on the flop was the which proved to be enough to win the pot for Gustavson.

Four handed quickly turned to three when Martin Gudvangen shoved 1.1 million chips in the middle with and found some action with Nikolai Senninger calling holding Neither player hit any piece of the board and the Queen kicker eliminated Gudvangen out to collect £227,000 in prize money.

Going into three handed play Gustavson was in the chip lead having 9.1 million in chips with Eastgate on 7.6 million. Short stacked Senninger wasn’t too far behind having 5.1 million.

Gustavson managed to increase his chip stack to over 14 million when knocking out Senninger into 3rd place. Senninger started off the pre flop betting, raising to 275,000 to which Gustavson re raised to 800,000. Senninger made the call and the flop came down Gustavson bet out 1.1 million and Senninger called to see the fall on the turn. Gustavson again came out firing moving all in and after taking time to think about his next move, Senninger eventually made the call. Senninger flipped over pocket eights but found himself behind Gustavson’s Only an eight would save Senninger but the river came down with the leaving Gustavson and Eastgate heads up.

Heads up only lasted a couple of hands, the first Gustavson pushed Eastgate off the pot taking a big chunk out of his stack. On the next hand all the chips went in pre flop with Eastgate being dominated holding against The board blanked for both players meaning Gustavson was the EPT UK champion winning £850,000.

Final Standings

1st Aaron Gustavson £850,000
2nd Peter Eastgate £530,000
3rd Nikolai Senninger £285,000
4th Martin Gudvangen £227,000
5th Dominic Cullen £173,000
6th Rui Milhomens £124,000
7th Raymond Wu £87,000
8th Karim Bennani £50,100

The World Series of Poker Europe main event was held Empire Casino in London where 334 players started out in the £10,000 tournament. The event was scheduled to be played over four days to find the 2009 WSOPE champion. The field was packed full of poker pro’s from around the world which made this a very tough event to negotiate.

Once the event reached the final table stage Jason Mercier was leading the chip rankings on just over 3 million in chips, almost 2 million more than his nearest rival James Akenhead. Akenhead who will appear on the WSOP main event final table in November was also joined by his fellow Novermber nine opponent Antoine Saout. Daniel Negreanu was the short stacked player on the final table with 438,000 in chips. Here is how the rest of the final table line up looked at the start of play on the final day.

Final Table Chip Rankings

1st Jason Mercier 3,198,000

2nd James Akenhead 1,398,000

3rd Praz Bansi 1,160,000

4th Barry Shulman 1,090,000

5th Markus Ristola 784,000

6th Antoine Saout 701,000

7th Matt Hawrilenko 674,000

8th Chris Bjorin 518,000

9th Daniel Negreanu 438,000

It took quite a while for the first elimination to come about as everyone was not committing too much to each pot. Daniel Negreanu made the best start increasing his chips stack up and then eliminating James Akenhead into 9th place. All the chips went in pre flop with Akenhead having up against pocket Kings. The Kings held up handing Negreanu the pot leaving Akenhead to collect £66,533 in prize money.

Soon after short stacked Matt Hawrilenko was next to fall when he moved all in with and was called by Barry Shulman with Neither player hit any piece of the board meaning Shulman’s Ace high was enough to win the pot.

On the very next hand the last remaining November Nine player Antoine Saout moved all in with pocket Fives and found some action with Negreanu calling with Negreanu managed to river a nut spade flush eliminating Saout in 7th place.

Negreanu then went onto take the overall chip lead when eliminating Chris Bjorin dominating with Bjorin had a chance after the flop gave him a straight draw but this didn’t materialize on the turn or river. Negreanu then struck again when he eliminated Markus Ristola out into 5th place. Negreanu raised under the gun to £100,000 and quickly called Ristola when he moved all in holding He was in the lead when Ristola showed until the turn paired his King. Negreanu called for an Ace and got his wish as the came down on the river.

Four handed play lasted for quite a while and when the players went for a break Praz Bansi has the chip lead with 2.9 million just ahead of Negreanu on 2.8 million. Mercier was on 2.3 million followed by Shulman in last place on 1.9 million.

Mercier had the best of it after the restart but was then pegged back by Negreanu. The two clashed again which would be the end for Mercier. All the chips went in pre flop with Mercier needing help having pocket Sevens against Negreanu’s pocket Nines. No Seven came to rescue Mercier who picked up £267,267 finishing in 4th place.

Praz Bansi was next to go when first being crippled by Shulman and then going out against Negreanu when his was dominated by The crowd watching along the rail was rooting for Bansi to hit a two but this never came to leave Negreanu heads up against Shulman.

Negreanu held a big chip lead over Shulman at the start and it was almost over in the early exchanges. On a flop showing all the chips went in the middle with Negreanu having pocket Aces but was up against Shulman’s looking to hit a flush. The on the turn left Negreanu drawing dead handing Shulman the chip lead.

Negreanu fought back and again nearly won the event when he was ahead after the turn holding against pocket Aces on the board showing The dealer then brought the hammer blow when the came down on the River leaving Negreanu with just 2 million in chips.

Negreanu never recovered from this beat and the event was finally over when his pocket four’s was beaten by pocket tens when a ten made Shulman a set on the flop. This meant Shulman was the 2009 WSOPE champion picking up the £801,603 first place prize and the WSOPE bracelet to go with it

Final Standings

1st Barry Shulman £801,603

The two shortest stacks clashed early on which saw the first elimination on the final table. The two Swedes Pontus Kers and Stefan Hjorthall went into a race with Hjorthall having pocket nines against Kers moved into the lead after pairing a queen on the flop which was enough to win the pot as the rest of the board blanked for Hjorthall.

Not long after Brandon Demes was next to fall when running into Dermot Blain’s pocket kings. The final board brought no ace eliminating Demes into 8th place. Not long after Blain found himself in the classic coin flip race having against Dbinder Singh with pocket queens. Blain paired an ace on the flop which was enough to eliminate Singh into 7th place.

Sixth place was decided when the chip leader Chen had Jicheng Su dominated with against The flop was no help for Su coming down but the on the Turn opened up a number of outs for Su who was now looking to hit either a straight or a flush. The on the river dashed these hopes ending his tournament winning $74,923.

After his near double up early in the tournament when eliminating Hjorthall, Pontus Kers didn’t have much luck after that point and decided to push his stack of 360,000 chips in the middle with after Darkhan Botabayev had made a 100,000 raise from early position. Botabayev made the call deciding to make a gamble holding The gamble looked to be a good one when Botabayev paired a nine on the flop. The turn gave Kers more outs some hope as he had four spades to a flush as well as looking to pair a king. The river card was a black one for Kers, but wrong suit as the completed the board.

The next elimination came when Chen raised to 200,000 and Botabayev announced he was all in from the big blind. Chen made the call and was pleased to see his pocket queens well ahead up against Botabayev had a brief ray of hope after the first four cards down gave him an inside straight draw and a flush draw, but neither came on the river handing Chen the pot.

Three handed play didn’t last too long as the two large stacks Chen and Blain clashed in a huge pot. Blain started off the hand raising pre flop to 220,000 and Chen made the call to see the flop come down Chen checked and Blain bet out 350,000, Chen raised it up to 1 million and Blain announced he was all in. Chen didn’t take long to call revealing but found himself dominated by Blain’s Only a queen would save the one time chip leader but the and completed the board. Chen received a round of applause from the watching crowd as he headed to the rail to collect $239,327 in prize money.

This win had put Blain miles out in front of Mike Kim in the chip count with 7.3 million chips compared to 920,000. As expected heads up play was finished off in just a few hands. Kim made a move going all in with but was behind Blain who had The flop came down giving both players a pair of tens and the on the turn left Kim needing a nine to win or a jack or three to chop the pot. None of them came as the confirmed Blain as the 2009 APPT Macau champion.

Final Standings

1st Dermot Blain $541,089

2nd Mike Kim $484,999

3rd Daoxing Chen $239,327

The opening stop of this season’s European Poker Tour (EPT) was in Kiev, Ukraine for the very first time. This event was originally scheduled to be played in Moscow but due to recent change in Russian laws regarding poker the venue had to be changed.

296 players started out all searching to be crowned the first EPT champion this season and of course the €330,000 on offer to the winner. It took four days play to reach the final stage of the table with Russian Maxim Lykov setting the lead with 2.5 million in chips. The rest of the final table line up looked as follows.

Final Table Chip Rankings

1st Maxim Lykov 2,597,000

2nd Vadim Markushevski 1,662,000

3rd Alexander Dovzhenko 1,590,000

4th Vitaly Tolokonnikov 1,019,000

5th Lucasz Plichta 731,000

6th Arthur Simonyan 531,000

7th Adrian Schaap 520,000

8th Torsten Tent 264,000

It took nearly one hour before the first elimination came about on the final table. Vadim Markushevski had started the day second in the chip rankings but found himself to be the first player out as he clashed with Alexander Dovzhenko who had a similar sized stack. All the chips went in pre flop with Markushevski having pocket Kings but was behind against Dovzhenko with pocket Aces. No help for Markushevski meant he was out in 8th place collecting €30,000 in prize money.

Half an hour later short stacked Torsten Tent moved all in with and looked in good shape to double up against Maxim Lykov with The flop changed the outlook as Lykov hit two pair, leaving Tent needing an ace to survive. The and completed the board confirming Tent’s exit in 7th place winning €45,000.

Ad Schaap’s bid to make it three consecutive Dutch EPT wins came to an end in a race against Lykov. Schaap had up against Lykov’s pocket tens. The final board blanked out for Schaap in the end leaving him to head for the rail in 6th place winning €60,000. Shortly after online qualifier Lucasz Plichta ran his pocket eights into Vitaly Tolokonnikov with pocket queens. Both players flopped a set and the over pair easily took the pot.

Arthur Simonyan didn’t really get going on this final table, but still managed to nurse his short stack, rising up the pay ladder with each elimination. This is where it all came to an end as he pushed his remaining 275,000 in chips with He was called by the chip leader Dovzhenko who had picked up pocket tens. Simonyan could only pair an eight on the final board showing which wasn’t enough to stay alive. He still picked up €100,000 in prize money for his efforts.

Three handed play didn’t last long at all as Lykov and Tolokonnikov clashed moving all there chips in pre flop with Lykov only just had Tolokonnikov covered in chips. It turned out to be a race with Lykov having against pocket sevens. Tolokonnikov held the lead after the flop came down but the on the turn put Lykov in pole position. The river was the :8d eliminating Tolokonnikov and moving Lykov into the chip lead going into heads up.

Heads up was dominated by Lykov as his aggressive play limited the moves Dovzhenko was able to make. The final hand came when all the chips went in after the first four cards down were Dovzhenko revealed having top pair but found himself behind Lykov’s having hit trip four’s. The on the river meant Lykov was the first ever EPT Kiev champion taking home €330,000 and a seat to the EPT grand final in Monte Carlo.

The APT made its regular stop in Macau and 326 players started out in the main event. They were made up of a strong local turn out and some well known poker pro’s all fighting for the $391,556 first place prize.

After two days play the final table of nine was decided with some well known players in the mix. The most recognizable was J.C Tran along with David Steicke and Casey Kastle. Here is how the final table lined up at the start of the final day.

Final Table Chip Rankings

1st Inwook Choi 934,000

2nd David Steicke 876,000

3rd Adrien Allain 482,000

4th JC Tran 444,000

5th Chris Chau 143,000

6th Crister Hallbrook 132,000

7th Casey Kastle 130,000

8th Michael Woo 64,000

9th Winfred Yu 61,000

Just three hands into the final table Casey Kastle looked in good shape to double up against Adrien Allain when calling all his chips in pre flop with pocket Kings against pocket Nines. This was until Allain rivered a straight with the final board showing Kastle who had made the final table in the previous two APT events collected $16,966 finishing in 9th place.

Shortly after Winfred Yu pushed his short stack in with and found some action when the chip leader Inwook Choi called with Yu hit top pair on the flop when it came down but found himself behind after the turn produced the No help came for Yu as the fell on the river eliminating him in 8th place winning $26,112.

The fast pace of this table didn’t slow down as Allain eliminated Crister Hallbrook into 7th place. All of Hallbrook’s chips went in after the flop came down and Allain made the call. Hallbrook had pocket Eights and was leading against Allain’s This quickly changed after the fell on the turn completing Allain’s straight leaving Hallbrook drawing dead with one card to come.

Allain then took the chip lead when- eliminating his third victim on the final table. This came when Michael Woo pushed the reminder of his short stack in with but his timing wasn’t great as he was up against pocket Kings. Woo only managed to hit a pair of sixes after the final board came down and went out in 6th place winning $52,223.

Just before the dinner break the table was reduced to just four runner’s when Chris Chau pushed his short stack in and both Choi and Allain called. Both players checked down the cards until the final board was showing Choi had the best hand at the showdown connecting with a pair of Tens to take the pot.

When the players returned David Steicke moved in with pocket Nines only to find himself behind Choi with pocket Kings. The Kings held up to eliminate Steike into 4th place. J.C Tran quickly followed Steicke to the rail when moving all in with and both Allain and Choi called. Both players checked down the cards and the final board was showing It was looking good for Tran with two pair until Allain revealed having hit a straight on the river.

Allain had a chip stack of 2.1 million at the start of heads up, just over double of Choi’s stack. It didn’t take long for the Frenchman to overcome his opponent but needed a slice of luck to do it. The deciding hand came when all the chips went in pre flop with Choi having the best hand against The flop swung the advantage in Allain’s favour as he paired his three. No help came for Choi as the rest of the board blanked out confirming Allain as the APT Macau champion.

This was a great achievement as it was later revealed that Allain had won his seat to this event through a $5 online satellite.

The sixth leg of the 2009 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) was held at the Grosvenor Casino in Luton. 304 players started out in the £1,000 buy in main event which was the largest turn out in this year’s GUKPT. The first prize place on offer to the winner reached £88,850.

The tournament was filled with quite a few well known poker players from around the UK and Europe making this a tough field. After three days play the tournament reached the final table stage and the final nine was headed by Richard Gryko on just over half a million in chips. The rest of the final nine looked as follows at the start of the final day.

Final Table Chip Rankings

1st Richard Gryko 539,000

2nd James Williams 493,000

3rd Alan McLean 422,500

4th Clive Padden 394,000

5th Stacey Clarke 340,000

6th Nicholas McLellan 303,500

7th James Morris 276,500

8th Chuck Thompson 154,000

9th Alan McBride 140,000

James Morris was the first to go when moving All In with after the flop had come down Unfortunately for Morris he had run into Stacey Clarke holding pocket Sixes. The set was easily good enough to take the pot leaving Morris to collect £6,100 finishing in 9th place.

Short stacked Alan McBride who was given his entry to this event as a birthday present from his wife was next to fall. He moved All In with pocket Queens but was up against Clive Padden holding pocket Aces. No Queen on the board meant McBride took home £8,200 for finishing in 8th place.

The next elimination came when all the chips went in after the flop had come down between Alan Mclean and James Williams. Williams had looking for an eight to hit a straight, but was at a big disadvantage as Mclean had also looking to hit an eight to make an event bigger straight. This meant Williams needed an Ace, running diamonds or for the board to blank for McLean to have a chance. The put Mclean firmly in the lead and the on the River confirmed Williams exit in 7th place winning £11,250.

After the good early start Stacey Clarke made, it all went quickly downhill and he was the next player eliminated when trying to make a move for the pot holding after the flop had come down He had one caller in Clive Padden who had hit top pair with The board blanked out for Clarke and he headed for the rail to collect £14,300 for finishing in 6th place. Chuck Thompson quickly followed Clarke when loosing the majority of his chips to Richard Gryko when running into with He was then eliminated into 5th place by Clive Padden and won £17,350 for his efforts.

Gryko then increased his chip stack by eliminating Nicholas McLellan in a race with Gryko having against pocket eights. Gryko made a straight after the final board had come down leaving McLellan to pick up £23,400 finishing in 4th place. The players had a one hour break and Gryko was leading with 1.8 million in chips, Clice Padden had 700,000 in second closely followed by Alan McLean with 530,000.

When the players returned Clive Padden and Alan Mclean clashed as all the chips went in pre flop. Mclean was well ahead holding against Padden’s No help came for Padden leaving him with just 110,000 in chips. On the next hand Padden managed to double up against Gryko, but the come back was short lived as Padden pushed All In on the next hand with which was beaten by Gryko with Padden won £35,850 finishing in 3rd place.

Gryko started heads up against McLean with almost double the chip stack having around 2 million in chips. He put this to good use winning the event in just over 40 minutes. The final hand came when McLean pushed All in with pocket fours and Gryko called with Gryko hit top pair when the flop came down and no four on the turn and river meant he was the GUKPT Luton champion of 2009. He collected £88,850 in prize money as well as a seat in the GUKPT grand final to be held later this year.

The first scheduled stop for the forth coming European Poker Tour (EPT) has now been switched from being in Moscow Russia over to Kiev in the Ukraine. The event has now been renamed the EPT Kiev Sports Poker Championship from the EPT Russia Open and will run on the same date‘s from 18th - 23rd August 2009.

The switch was caused by a recent change in the Russian laws regarding poker making the event impossible to go ahead. Any player who has won a seat to the EPT Russia event at Poker Stars will have the option to take a seat in Kiev, partake in any other EPT event this season or to receive a full refund equivalent to the cash prize.

There is still time to win a seat to the EPT Kiev event through the satellites currently running at Poker Stars
