I'm settling into the Temple for Performing Arts in Des Moines, which is the location for our caucus night rally and results watching party. Staff are putting finishing touches on the room and I'm setting up for a night of reporting results to the online community, while the Foo Fighters are blasting over the stereo system for a sound test.

The caucus starts in less than an hour - now is the time for Dodd supporters in Iowa to go to their caucus location and stand for Chris Dodd.

Iowa's state flag reads "Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain."

What a fitting motto for the state that tonight will serve as the proving ground for the Democratic field.

In little over a year, a new President will be sworn into the Oval Office. That person will be tasked with many jobs from Day One, but perhaps none is more important than the restoration of our Constitution following eight years of abuse at the hands of the Bush administration.

While Iowans spend the last three hours or so before the caucus pondering which candidate they will stand with, I hope they take the time to look at their state flag. Re-read their state motto. Then make their decision.

Only one candidate has made standing up for the Constitution central to his campaign.

Only one candidate authored a book this year about our nation's proudest moment standing up for the rule of law.

Only one candidate left the campaign trail to return to Washington and stop another assault on our rights.

Only one candidate has pledged that on the very first hour of the very first day, he will restore the Constitution of the United States of America.

Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.

Iowans, the time is now: Caucus for Chris Dodd, because he, above all others, will use his presidency to not just maintain our rights, but restore and protect them. We know he will do that in 2009, because he's already doing it now, in 2007 and 2008.

So stand by your state's motto and please stand for Chris Dodd tonight.

The most important problem in our country, in my opinion, is Bush's shredding of the Constitution. With signing statements, warrantless wiretapping, and the suspension of habeas corpus, among others, George Bush has reduced the bedrock philosophy guiding our nation to rubble. Chris Dodd is the candidate who will restore these founding principles because he is already working to restore them now.

Chris Dodd's fight against telecom immunity is only the latest in a twenty year history of fighting for these values. He stands up for what America is all about - fair laws, equal rights, people power - and he has the experience to get things done.

Jason has been a critical ally on this campaign and his coverage of Chris Dodd has been fantastic. Thanks for the help throughout J-Ro, and we'll be sure to look for more support as Chris Dodd moves forward in the campaign after he receives a ticket out of Iowa from Democratic caucus goers.

In seven hours, the doors to Democratic precincts around Iowa will close and the caucus will begin. After a year plus of campaigning around the country, polls, media appearances, major policy differences, and minor gaffes actual Democratic voters will have their first chance to tell the nation and the world what they think about our Presidential candidates. This is it.

Right now, the last hours of the mobilization for Chris Dodd in Iowa are taking place. Calls are going out to our supporters from volunteers in our Des Moines phone bank - making sure that every Dodd voter makes it to tonight's caucus. Precinct captains are getting the final run down of the process and the case they'll be making to their neighbors tonight when the caucus doors close. We are ready for this.

I've been in Iowa for over a week and for the second time I'm fighting off a nasty head cold. Pretty much everyone on the campaign is in the same place - working long hours in the cold, not getting enough sleep, and having a campaign office diet with far too many doughnuts and slices of pizza and not enough leafy greens puts your immune situation at risk. But I haven't heard anyone complain yet - we're trying to get our next President elected and there will be time to rest when Chris Dodd is in the Oval Office, steering our ship of state.

One thing is clear: nothing is final yet. Iowans are still making up their minds and will be doing so well into the caucus tonight.

Last night I went to the Caucus for Results rally in Ottumwa. Afterwards I got to speak with two undecided voters. They liked what they saw with Senator Dodd, but wanted to hear more about him. As much as I enjoy what I do on this blog and with the online community, getting to sit face to face with two Democratic caucus goers twenty-four hours before they would take their stand and make my case for Chris Dodd was exactly how I wanted to close this part of the campaign. Making the case, winning people over, or at least leaving them with a moment that they can turn to when they decide who to caucus for tonight in Ottumwa.

Chris Dodd has earned support in Iowa and praise online. The International Association of Fire Fighters and their loyal members will be standing with Dodd tonight - their support is visible throughout the state and will be one of the biggest factors for our success tonight. Soon enough, we shall know who is joining them to support Chris Dodd and give him a ticket out of Iowa and on to New Hampshire.

I can't wait to start hearing the results. I'll be keeping the blog up to date with news and events throughout the day.

Caucus for Results Rally in Indianola

Here's some video from the rally in Indianola this afternoon. Every event I've been to on the Caucus for Results Tour has been packed, and today in Indianola was no different. Please excuse the poor sound quality in the beginning of the video--Jackie Dodd delivered an excellent but very quiet introduction to her husband's speech.

Dodd on the Caucus Process

Crooks & Liars has posted the video of Senator Dodd's appearance today on MSNBC with Andrea Mitchell. In it he talks about the caucus process and what he thinks about other campaigns making deals to push their supporters to each other in areas where they are not viable. Dodd firmly rejects this and won't be dictating to his supporters who they should caucus for if he isn't viable in a particular precinct. From C&L's transcription:

Dodd: Yea, I’m totally opposed to that and let me take advantage of the interview Andrea saying don’t make any calls to my office, any campaigns…I didn’t come here and spend a year campaigning in Iowa…working and expect the people who committed themselves to me at my behest and support someone else. They made a decision to be for me and I’m grateful to them.

Mike Caulfield at Blue Hampshire responds to Dodd's comments favorably:

I have to say that this is exactly what I love about the guy, and his campaign.

He has realized from the beginning that he is representing his supporters -- his supporters are not representing him. He's allowed his volunteers and staff to talk freely with the press, and he's been careful to portray the causes he's taken up not as his own, but as ones he shares with his supporters.

He's truly what I would consider a movement candidate, and that's because he understands it's not about him. It's about our shared goals.

So, reluctantly, I have to concede -- he demonstrated what it is to truly be a people-powered candidate this cycle, and it would be a shame to compromise that on the home stretch.

"Chris Dodd Gets My Vote"

Blogger and video blogger Tommy Christopher makes an in-depth case for Chris Dodd at AOL's Political Machine. He goes through Senator Dodd's issue statements on labor, health care, Iraq, energy, the Constitution, national service, education, and veterans and responds to each with analysis of why he sees Dodd taking the best position on the issue.

In the law, there's a thing called prima facie, on it's face. If a candidate's case is weak on it's face, i.e. their stated positions, there's no point in seeing if they can back those positions up. That's my premise, so let's take a look at Chris Dodd in his own words. I wish I'd had this idea earlier than this, but that's life, ain't it? Hopefully I'll get to do a bunch more of these. Once more, here's where my support of Senator Dodd began.

...

With the exception of a limited training and counter-terrorism force, Dodd wants the U.S. out of Iraq. Period. I agree. Without starting a lengthy treatise on Iraq, I believe not only that the current downturn in violence is meaningless without political progress, and that the level of violence, while reduced, is still wholly unacceptable, but that it is a temporary situation. Without a political solution, the violence will increase. Key to our exit in Iraq is the rest of Dodd's foreign policy, which involves rebuilding our alliances around the world, and pressing allies like Saudi Arabia for democratic reform....After reading all of Dodd's positions, (I omitted several for "brevity"), I get a picture of a veteran progressive who wants to build with the bricks we have now. While his policy ambitions are significant, his plans for executing them are pretty traditional.

Based solely on the substance, I'd say Chris Dodd is a very good candidate. Based on his actions on FISA, which indicate that when he brings it, it gets brung, Chris Dodd gets my vote. Enough votes for Dodd might teach the rest of the Democrats the value of Courage.

One the issues. On experience. On a career of getting results for America - Chris Dodd is the best person to lead our country in 2009.
