Unfinished Business

Jordan, a student at PSU, is a field organizer for Oregon for Hillary. Fourteen years ago, she met the then-First Lady in a meeting arranged by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. At just eight years old, Jordan had endured two heart operations, cancer and a kidney transplant. People like Jordan are the reason why Hillary is in this race.

On Friday I woke up at 4:30 in the morning -- I had jumped the gun by two hours. However it’s not every day you get to reunite with your life-long hero, hence my anxiousness. As an eight-year-old girl recovering from renal failure, I first met then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton at the White House.

I am 22 now, and in less than four hours I would be meeting Hillary yet again. Only this time she was coming to my neck of the woods, Portland, Oregon, and not as First Lady, but as Senator Clinton, Democratic presidential hopeful. Our reunion would take place at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, a place that has given me a second chance at life on numerous occasions.

Upon seeing her at last, I met her half way as she greeted me with open arms. This was history coming full circle and I could barely contain my nerves. In an attempt to compose myself, I recalled the advice of my father who told me days prior, “Remember this isn’t about you. Just remember what you are there for.” I tried to keep in mind the bigger picture, and thus the larger-than-self meaning behind Hillary’s visit.

More important than me was the Senator’s effort to revisit the cause she so vigorously championed during the time of our first meeting. Universal health care is as she said -- “unfinished business.” I have the luxury of being relatively healthy now, and more so, have had the luxury of being insured, making my trials much easier for me and my family to deal with. The same can’t be said for 43 percent of the patients currently treated at Doernbecher.

As a former patient I now had the honor of guiding the Senator on a tour of the intermediate care ward. Her candor and grace immediately struck me, and her inquisitive nature made her effortlessly approachable. Watching the Senator reach out to one young man, clearly suffering from the effects of chemotherapy and radiation -- a distant memory in my mind -- prompted flashbacks, which further reinforced my sense of place and purpose.

At 9:30 the visit culminated in a roundtable discussion in the main courtyard where dozens of doctors, patients and their families braved the cold to hear the Senator make her case for why every American must have health care. We heard from two mothers of ill children treated at Doernbecher -- two separate stories as case in point for how the current health care system has failed its people, and in this particular instance, its children. “How can we expect to achieve Universal Health Care if the stated goal is something far less?” Hillary asked of the hospital’s onlookers.

This is why I support Senator Clinton. She was ahead of her time when she first worked to achieve universal health care fourteen years ago and she has refused to give up since. I am thoroughly convinced that, above all, Hillary has a personal interest in seeing this come to fruition, and we know she won’t shy away from the fight ahead. I’m for Hillary because she’s a fighter like me.

Excitement for Hillary is Brewing Here in Puerto Rico!

As many Boricuas enjoyed their café con leche while doing last-minute Mother’s Day shopping at Paseo De Diego, in the heart of San Juan, I was overwhelmed listening to people who over and over again shouted out “Hillary, esa es mi candidata”.

A group of volunteers took to the busy streets of Río Piedras, handing out bumper stickers, yard signs and, most importantly, one-on-one information on Hillary’s comprehensive agenda for the jurisdiction with the largest Hispanic population under the American flag--- over 4 million.

With a voter turn-out of more than 80%, we here are very vocal about politics and, during our visit, people were certainly eager to shake hands with us and express their whole-hearted support for her candidacy. They know that Hillary is a champion for Boricuas but, most importantly, she is the one, true voice for all Latinos in the United States.

On Sunday, June 1st, all eyes will be on Puerto Rico as we celebrate the democratic primary and Hillary’s victory here in the Island.

El 1ero de junio, ¡sal a votar por Hillary!

Why I'm In

Hillary just sent out the following message:

Dear Friend,

There are some people out there who want to declare this race over now, before all the ballots have been counted or even cast. There are some who say they don't know why I'm in this race. So let me tell you why I'm still running.

I'm in this race for everyone who needs a champion. For the hardworking families who are losing sleep over gas prices and grocery costs and mortgage payments and medical bills -- but who never lose that American can-do spirit and optimism.

I'm in this race for the more than 16 million people like you who have supported me -- for the people who have put their hearts into winning this race. You never gave up on me, and I'll never give up on you.

We are in the homestretch. After sixteen months, there are only three weeks left to compete in the final contests. With your help I'm going to keep fighting until every last American has a chance to be heard, and as we learned last night in West Virginia, I know we can win.

Contribute now to keep our campaign going strong.

I'm also in this race because I have the best chance of beating John McCain in November and putting America on the right track.

We proved something in West Virginia last night -- a state every Democratic president has won since 1916. And we proved something in a few other battleground states that have a history of picking presidents. Pennsylvania. Ohio. Arkansas. New Hampshire. New Jersey. New Mexico. Nevada. And, yes, Michigan and Florida.

I am in this race, and so are you, because we both know the stakes in this election are too high to stay on the sidelines.

So let's keep going together, you and me. Let's keep driving our campaign forward, and let's keep winning.

Make a contribution today to help me win.

I want to thank you again for the incredible generosity of spirit you have shown over the course of this campaign. Together, you and I are going to make history.

Thank you,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

HUBdate: Victory In West Virginia

Victory In West Virginia: Hillary won the West Virginia primary by a 41-point margin, earning 67 percent of the vote…In her victory speech, she told supporters that “there are some who have wanted to cut this race short. They say ‘give up, it's too hard, the mountain is too high,’ but here in West Virginia, you know a thing or two about rough roads to the top of the mountain… I’m in this race for the millions of Americans who know that we can do better in our country, for the nurse on her second shift, for the worker on the line, for the waitress on her feet, for the small business owner, the farmer, the teacher, the coal miner, the trucker, the soldier, the veteran, the college student.” Read more.

In Case You Missed It: Watch Communications Director Howard Wolfson on the significance of Hillary’s West Virginia victory: “This isn’t just a small victory, this is a huge victory. The media has been telling voters: Barack Obama is the presumptive nominee. It’s all over. Give up. Don’t come out and vote. And yet, in overwhelming numbers, they’ve come out and voted for Senator Clinton tonight.” Watch here.

Why West Virginia Matters: “The Mountain State is used to picking winners. Every nominee has carried the state’s primary since 1976, and no Democrat has won the White House without winning West Virginia since 1916. Democrats carried West Virginia in 1992 and 1996, but lost the state - and the White House - in 2000 and 2004. Hillary has predicted victory against Sen. McCain in West Virginia based on the strength of her economic message. Given the attempts by our opponent and some in the media to declare this race over, any significant increase in voter turnout, coupled with a decisive Clinton victory, would send a strong message that Democrats remain excited and energized by Hillary’s candidacy.” Read more.

Hitting the Airwaves: Hillary appears on national news programs today including ABC World News, CBS Evening News, CNN’s Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, FOX News, NBC Nightly News, and Noticiero Univision.

By The Numbers: A new ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that “more than six in 10 Democrats…64 percent…say Clinton should remain in the race.” A USA Today Poll also shows a majority of Democrats want Hillary to continue. (View the ABC poll and the USA Today article.)

Standing For You: In a Courier-Journal op-ed, Hillary writes to voters in Kentucky: “Day after day, I've been inspired by the people I've met -- people who embrace opportunity, never waver in the face of adversity, meet hard times with hard work, and never stop believing in the promise of America… The challenges we face are great, but the possibilities are endless if we roll up our sleeves and get to work with a president who works her heart out for you every day. I hope you will go to the polls on May 20 and give me the chance to be that president.” Read more.

On Tap: Hillary will campaign in South Dakota on Thursday and Oregon on Friday and Saturday.

West Virginia Results

Hillary just sent out the following message:

Dear Friend,

After tonight's tremendous victory here in West Virginia, it's clear that the pundits declaring this race over have it all wrong. The voters in West Virginia spoke loud and clear -- they want this contest to go on.

I'm listening to the voters -- and to you.

With your help, I'm going to carry the energy of tonight's victory into the next contests in Kentucky and Oregon. And just as always, I'll be depending on you to share every step of this journey with me. You have worked your heart out, put yourself on the line for what you believe in, and given generously. And I'm not about to turn my back on you.

We've proved conventional wisdom wrong time and again in this race. We did it again tonight in West Virginia. Let's keep going.

Thank you,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

Memo: Why West Virginia Matters

With a record turnout expected in today’s primary, West Virginia Democrats will make clear who they believe is the strongest candidate to take on Sen. McCain in the Fall.

The Mountain State is used to picking winners. Every nominee has carried the state’s primary since 1976, and no Democrat has won the White House without winning West Virginia since 1916.

Democrats carried West Virginia in 1992 and 1996, but lost the state—and the White House--in 2000 and 2004. Hillary has predicted victory against Sen. McCain in West Virginia based on the strength of her economic message.

Given the attempts by our opponent and some in the media to declare this race over, any significant increase in voter turnout, coupled with a decisive Clinton victory, would send a strong message that Democrats remain excited and energized by Hillary’s candidacy.

In the face of grim poll numbers, the Obama campaign has attempted to dismiss today’s outcome despite the fact that Sen. Obama has outspent us on advertising, has more staff in the state, and more than double the number of offices.

He has also benefited from the support of the most high-profile endorsers in West Virginia—Sen. Jay Rockefeller and Congressman Nick Rahall. By every measure, the Obama campaign has waged an aggressive campaign in the Mountain State.

Despite being the so-called “presumptive nominee” and benefiting from these advantages, Sen. Obama has been unable to close a significant gap in the polls.
Sen. Clinton has already won Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida and Michigan. With a win in West Virginia, Sen. Clinton will have once again proven her greater ability to win in the key swing states.

Hillary's Statements on the Earthquake in China and the Situation in Burma

Hillary on the Earthquake in China:

Like all Americans, my thoughts and prayers are with the people of China, as they grapple with the devastation caused by the terrible earthquake which struck Sichuan province earlier today. I extend my condolences to those who have lost loved ones and am especially grieved by the number of children who have been affected. I welcome President Bush’s offer of assistance, and join with him and all Americans in our readiness to help in any way at this time of need.

Hillary on the Current Situation in Burma:

As the humanitarian situation in Burma continues to deteriorate, it is critical that the United States and the international community do everything possible to get humanitarian assistance into the country to save lives.
The Burmese junta has blocked international efforts, prevented humanitarian workers from distributing assistance, and insisted that the junta control aid distribution itself.
The Bush administration must work urgently and at the highest levels with other governments that have leverage with Burma to persuade its rulers to allow aid to reach those in need without interference.
The United States should continue to press for access to deliver assistance directly. Equally important, the Bush administration should work through friends and partners in the region, including India, Japan, and Thailand. We should also provide aid, logistical, and other support to international organizations already on the ground.
While I welcome reports of some increase in the delivery of humanitarian assistance, including the arrival of the first American aid flight, we must make it clear to Burma's military rulers that the international community will hold them responsible if they refuse to meet their international obligations by blocking access and aid to the people of their country who are in dire need. We cannot allow politics to obstruct the delivery of assistance that can prevent this grave humanitarian situation from getting worse.

Please visit redcross.org to learn more about disaster relief efforts.

What People are Saying Across West Virginia

With the West Virginia primary approaching, voters across the state are declaring their support for Hillary:

...just wanted to drop a line to tell you about one of your amazing supporters in WV. This would be my cousin Kathy. In the last past year she has been through open heart surgery and leukemia. She got out of the hospital about a month and half ago in remission. Tonight I was getting on the interstate to go to Clarksburg, and who do I see - my cousin Kathy standing on the side of the road waving a Hillary sign. That is true heart. Like me, she was raised by a mother who taught her to be independent and never set limitations. I won't vote for you for president because you are a woman. I will vote for you because of your experience, intelligence and because I feel you truly want to help this country. The fact that you are a woman…is a bonus. Oh, and I'm fairly certain my husband, son , and nephew will be voting for you, also. Good Luck!

-Julie L. from Fairmont

My name is Andrew and I am a junior political science major at West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. Four weeks ago I was sure my vote in this primary was going to Senator Obama, but after hearing the former President speak at our campus and sitting down and figuring out what matters in this country, there is only one way to vote -- and that’s for Senator Clinton. Senator Clinton has a lifetime record of fighting for hard working Americans and I believe once again she will prove the critics wrong. I believe we need someone in Washington who won't forget where they come from and where they've been and I believe Hillary Clinton is that person. Hillary you'll always be a Mountaineer and on May 13th we will make sure West Virginia remains Clinton Country!

-Andrew N. from Morgantown

...Hillary has the experience, compassion, and wisdom to build America back up to where it should be and put the pieces of our country back together again. There are many leaders in this world, but the ones that lead with compassion are the only ones that are remembered and respected. Hillary has gained our respect in the past and will continue to prove that she deserves it in the future…A vote for Hillary is a vote for the change we need and the experience to back it up. I am putting my middle class family of four into the hands of Hillary knowing that she will care for us as she has cared for her own…Hillary is the future of our American dream. I put my full faith in Hillary's hands to provide the answers to the most difficult problems in our world today. If you look closely into Hillary's eyes when she speaks of the change needed for us, you can actually see the compassion for the American people. You can see yourself, your neighbor, your family, your friends, your children's future...and the world right there in her eyes. As she speaks you can actually hear her listening to you, and the needs of everyone. Hillary's presence makes you feel that there is a future worth waking up for.

-Jennifer L. from Bridgeport

I am the Assessor of Marshall County, WV and I want to give my endorsement to Hillary as the next President of the United States. Senator Clinton is the only candidate that is proposing solutions to problems that affect working-class West Virginians and Americans. I don't think I've ever seen a candidate display such tenacity and a fighting spirit -- and Hillary does it every day on the campaign trail. These qualities are what I want in my president, and I am fully confident that Hilary will carry those qualities to the White House. I've always stated in my election campaigns that I got into politics to try to help people. There is no doubt in my mind that Hilary has done the same.

-Christopher K. from McMechen

Women March to the Mailbox for Hillary

Tess is the Oregon Women's Outreach Director.

Yesterday our amazing women leaders congregated across the state and celebrated Mother's Day weekend with a rally for Hillary.

In Portland and Eugene, over 400 women and families gathered to hear from a panel of fantastic speakers including Ellen Malcolm, Ann Lewis and many more. Grammy nominated singer Sophie B. Hawkins pumped up the crowd.

Immediately following the event, mother's marched in unison with their families and children to the ballot box to cast their vote for the most qualified candidate in the race – Hillary Clinton.

As I have worked on this race, I have heard many stories from women all over the state about the significance of this opportunity and what watching Hillary's struggle and triumph has meant in their lives. Emotions ran high yesterday as women cheered, rallied, chanted, and cried while watching their young daughters and sons take turns running to the mailbox to drop their mother's ballots.

It was a special day, and one that will go down in my memory as one of the most moving experiences on this campaign.

Here's to paid family leave, reproductive rights, equal pay, health care for our children, care for the environment, and the historic phrase "women's rights are human rights." Here is to all of the women across this country who have had the courage to walk Hillary's walk with her – to those who continue to fight every single day – until every vote is cast and counted.

&ampamplt;br&ampampgt;

Click here to learn more about what's happening in the Beaver State.

Mother's Day in West Virginia

On Mother’s Day, Hillary traveled throughout West Virginia with Chelsea, starting off her day by attending Church in Huntington. The senior pastor gave some inspiring remarks about making a difference in this world and having a voice. His words were very fitting, as Hillary has pledged to be a voice in the White House for all Americans who have been invisible to the current administration.

Hillary and Chelsea then went on to Webster to tour the home of Anna Marie Jarvis, who founded Mother’s Day 100 years ago. The next stop was Grafton, where Hillary took part in a Mother’s Day celebration. Hillary spoke to the gathered crowd, and talked about the inspiring women and mothers she has met in West Virginia and throughout the country. Read Hillary's full speech here. Hillary ended her day in Eleanor, and it was amazing to see how many people came out to fill the George Washington Middle School gym on Mother’s Day. The bottom line – West Virginia loves Hillary!

&amplt;br&ampgt;

Click here to visit the West Virginia page and learn more about what's happening in the Mountain State.

Today In West Virginia: Hillary hosts a “Solutions for the American Economy” Town Hall in Clear Fork, a “Solutions For America” rally in Logan, and an “Old-Fashioned Political Rally” with Governor Joe Manchin in Fairmont.

Mother’s Day In Grafton, WV: “Sunday was Mother’s Day, but U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton did not take the day off. Instead, she was campaigning here at the birthplace of the holiday. Clinton, along with her daughter Chelsea, toured the home of Mother’s Day founder Anna Jarvis early in the afternoon. The two Clintons stopped briefly to wave to onlookers who had braved the rain to line the road in order to catch a glimpse of the presidential candidate. ‘Happy Mother’s Day,’ Clinton shouted to the spectators.” Read more.

In Case You Missed It: Read and listen to Hillary’s Mother’s Day remarks here.

Sunday Show Appearances: On CBS’ Face the Nation yesterday, Campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe said, “We still have seven million Democrats yet to vote.
My Daughter Can Dream a Bit Bigger Because of the Path Hillary has Blazed

Neera Tanden is the Policy Director on the Hillary Clinton for President campaign.
Campaigns, especially Presidential campaigns, are relentless -- long hours and late night phone calls are par for the course. So parents of young children are often hesitant to join them. As a mother of two fabulous children -- a 5 year old girl and a 2 year old boy -- I had my own concerns when I first started my job on this campaign. I knew that a presidential campaign would, to put it mildly, mean less family time. But I took this job -- and have worked for Hillary for 10 years -- because I believe there is no public official in America more committed to our children's future. Hillary has worked tirelessly for decades to make mothers' (and fathers') jobs easier. During the course of this campaign, I've been lucky to work with her on her policies to help parents balance work and family -- from a national paid leave program, to expanding the Family and Medical Leave Act, to expanding child care. And I have to say, those proposals really hit home for me.
So on Mothers' Day, I'm proud of what Hillary has already done in terms of changing the conversation about women's roles and mothers' roles. I'm honored to be part of this fight, and feel lucky that I was able to do the job. As a mom herself, Hillary has been tremendously understanding and flexible, moving meetings to accommodate my daughter's school plays. While I may sleep a little less than I'd like, I actually have been able to tuck my kids into bed at night most nights on this campaign.
That is a tribute to Hillary's firsthand understanding of what it's like to be a working mom. (But it's also a tribute to my loving, amazing husband who's taken on the role of super dad.)
I will celebrate Mothers Day with my children knowing that Hillary has already made history and that my daughter can dream a bit bigger because of the path Hillary has blazed for her and millions of girls in our country. And I know that as President, Hillary will help ensure that we leave this country better off for both my children.
