“Warri Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) was formed over three decades ago to accommodate journalists who are practicing within Warri and it’s environ.
“The Chapel has 32 qualified practicing membership. The Chapel had her last admission of members over 13 years ago and had successful pilot it’s affairs without rancor

“The Warri Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held an emergency meeting to deliberate on recent developments concerning the conduct of the forthcoming election of the Chapel slated for Monday, March 16, 2026 and the actions of the State Council Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe.

“The chapel observed that the State Chairman unilaterally took the decision to unjustly disenfranchised some members by delisting them from the voters list of the Chapel’s election scheduled to hold on March 16, 2026 thereby contravening Article 3 :3(g).

“The Chairman is running the administration of the Secretariat as his personal estate as critical decisions affecting members of the council, including chapels, are taken without recourse to other members of the SWC thereby contravening Article 5: D(e) of the NUJ Constitution 2023 (Amended).

“A case in hand is the decision to delist and excommunicate some eligible members and his response to the report of the 2026 Credentials Committee dated 8th March, 2026 titled; “Re:Approved Date For Warri Correspondents’ Chapel Election and Resolution of Petitions.” This letter was signed by the Chairman against the advice of the Acting State Secretary.

“The State Chairman, took an ignoble step to delist qualified members who are online Correspondents working for different online media organizations, thereby running foul of Section 3:2(a) NUJ Constitution 2023 (Amended).

“The Chapel also observed that the Delta State Council Chairman also disregarded the provision of the Constitution by denying members who are plying their trade outside the location of their establishment, thereby violating Article 5: (F3) of the NUJ Constitution (As Amended).

“Members maintained that an election is not a screening exercise, and therefore no individual, including the State Council Chairman, has the constitutional authority to screen members of the Union ahead of the March 16, 2026, of the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel’s election.

“Congress reaffirms its recognition of the role of the State Council leadership as limited to supervising the electoral process, not determining the eligibility of members to vote or participate in line with Article 6: 6

“Based on the obvious violation of the NUJ Constitution 2023 (as Amended) by the Chairman of the Delta State Council, the Chapel consequently, passed a vote of no confidence on the State Council Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe.

The distinction between merely having a senator and having a ranking senator is profound. While a senator may face limitations in accessing vital opportunities, a ranking senator enjoys nearly limitless access to resources and influence that can significantly enhance the lives of his constituents.

Throughout the years, we have witnessed the stark contrast in the impact of a senator versus that of a ranking senator. The latter possesses the power to unlock a wealth of opportunities and drive the dividends of democracy directly to the people. As the 2027 elections draw near, it is imperative for the Urhobo nation to unite and re-elect Sen. Ede Dafinone to the Senate. His return will ensure that we have a ranking senator, which is crucial for the advancement of the Delta Central Senatorial District and the Urhobo nation at large.

Sen. Ede Dafinone has consistently proven himself as the people’s senator, tirelessly advocating for the interests of the Urhobo nation. Unlike his predecessors, he has steadfastly defended our rights and worked diligently to bring about positive change. Let us rally together to secure a brighter future for the Urhobo nation by supporting Sen. Ede Dafinone in the upcoming elections!

Experience has shown that seniority in the Senate often translates into greater access to projects, committee leadership positions, and national influence. When a senator becomes ranking, the scope of what he can achieve expands significantly. For example, many people today acknowledge the numerous projects attracted to Delta Central by Ovie Omo-Agege. Those achievements were made possible largely because he had attained the status of a ranking senator with the influence necessary to drive development home to his constituents.

Similarly, Peter Nwaoboshi was able to leverage strategic committee positions, including involvement with the Niger Delta Development Commission, to bring development and employment opportunities to his people. Another notable example is James Manager, whose long tenure in the Senate enabled him to facilitate opportunities and federal presence for his constituents through the advantage of seniority.

These examples illustrate a simple but powerful truth: seniority matters in the Senate. A ranking senator has greater leverage, stronger negotiating power, and more opportunities to deliver meaningful development to his constituency.

It is also instructive that leadership positions within the Senate are often determined by seniority. The experience of Adams Oshiomhole reminds us that without ranking status in the Senate, access to top leadership positions can be significantly limited.

For the Urhobo nation, the path forward is clear. We have only one senator representing our people at the National Assembly. To strengthen our voice and maximize our opportunities, we must ensure that our representative gains the seniority required to influence decisions at the highest level.

Therefore, as we look toward the future, the Urhobo nation must unite behind Sen. Ede Dafinone and return him to the Senate. By doing so, we are not merely electing a senator—we are positioning the Urhobo nation to have a ranking senator, a strategic advantage that can unlock greater development, stronger representation, and a brighter future for our people.

The opportunity is before us. Let us seize it wisely and ensure that the Urhobo nation moves forward with strength, unity, and purpose, by re-electing Sen. Ede Dafinone.

The Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance has raised concerns over the slow implementation of the National Assembly’s directives to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) regarding compensation for the family of Mr. Fidelis Omhonria.

Recall that the directives were issued following the tragic incident in which two-year-old Onosereba Omhonria was killed and his younger brother, Eromonsele Omhonria, sustained a gunshot injury to the eye during an operation involving NDLEA officers.

The Vice Chairman and Acting Chairman of the committee, Senator Ede Dafinone, while presiding over the Committee review meeting with NDLEA officials, expressed dissatisfaction that nearly three years after the incident the agency is yet to fully comply with the Senate’s earlier resolution on compensation for the affected family.

Lawmakers emphasised that the delay undermines public confidence in the implementation of legislative directives and the pursuit of justice for victims.

The committee stressed the need for urgent action to address the matter and provide relief to the grieving family. The lawmakers maintained that the Senate’s directive was clear and must be carried out without further delay.

Senator Dafinone reiterated the committee’s determination to ensure that the agency fulfills its obligations. He noted that legislative oversight is critical to guaranteeing accountability within government institutions.

Furthermore, to facilitate compliance, the committee advised the NDLEA to formally engage the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation. According to the lawmakers, confiscated assets under the custody of the government could legally be accessed to provide compensation to the Omhonria family.

The committee explained that the meeting was convened specifically to review progress made so far in implementing the Senate’s directives and to identify practical steps toward resolving the matter. Members stressed that the welfare and rights of citizens must remain a priority in law enforcement operations.

It is noteworthy that the committee reassured Nigerians of the National Assembly’s unwavering commitment to ensuring justice in the case. The lawmakers also emphasized the urgent need to secure adequate medical care for the injured child, Eromonsele Omhonria, to help preserve his sight while the family awaits full compliance with the Senate’s directive.

.

In the buildup to the 2011 general elections, the late Senator Professor Adego Eferakeya issued a stern, prophetic warning to the Urhobo nation. He spoke of a quiet but devastating peril: the danger of lacking a “ranking senator” in the Nigerian National Assembly. As a member of his media campaign team during that era, I sat in the front row of history, listening as he articulated a reality that many political observers ignore to their own detriment. Senator Eferakeya was unambiguous—the Urhobo nation, despite its numerical strength and economic contributions, was often a “lone voice” in the Red Chamber. He argued that without the institutional seniority that comes with ranking status, even the most brilliant or charismatic senator remains at a structural disadvantage.

To understand the weight of this warning, one must look at the demographics of power in Nigeria. The Urhobo nation is the fifth-largest ethnic group in the country. Yet, in the high-stakes theatre of Abuja politics, we often stand as political orphans. Our neighbours in Delta North find legislative solace and strength in their kinship with the Igbos across the Niger. Our brothers in Delta South—the Ijaws—align with a vast kinship spanning Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo, and Akwa Ibom. When an Ijaw senator speaks, he is backed by a chorus of voices from multiple states. But the Urhobo voice is solitary. For that voice to be heard above the legislative din, it cannot afford to be the voice of a “neophyte.” It must be the voice of a ranking senator who understands the levers of power.

The Historical Cost of the “Newbie” Cycle
A critical look at the Urhobo political trajectory from the dawn of the Fourth Republic in 1999 up until 2015 reveals a pattern of abysmally low tangible impact. This was not due to a lack of individual talent. We sent men of immense stature to Abuja: the late Senator Fred Brume, a brilliant engineer and administrator; the late Senator Felix Ibru, a former Governor and architect of repute; and the fiery Senator Pius Ewherido. However, their legislative impact was frequently curtailed by the “newbie” trap.

In the Senate, seniority isn’t just a matter of respect; it is a matter of law and standing orders. New senators are effectively on probation. They are rarely given the floor during critical debates and are almost never considered for the “Tier 1” committees where the nation’s wealth is distributed. Save for Professor Eferakeya—who used his unique goodwill and professional standing to strategically attract the Faculty of Engineering and a Medical Center to the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), as constituency projects—few can point to landmark, multi-generational achievements from that era.

Compare this to the “James Manager Era” in Delta South. Senator James Manager served multiple terms, rising to become the Chairman of the Senate Committee on the NDDC. Because he was a ranking member, he didn’t just ask for projects; he influenced the budget. He was able to facilitate massive infrastructure, thousands of international scholarships, and high-level job placements for his people. Similarly, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi from Delta North utilized his ranking status to dominate the NDDC committee, ensuring his constituency was a primary beneficiary of the agency’s interventions. The lesson is clear: in Abuja, seniority is the only currency that buys results.

The Omo-Agege Precedent
The most recent and glaring evidence of the “Ranking Advantage” is the tenure of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege. When he first went to the Senate, he was a lone voice. But it was his return as a ranking senator in 2019 that changed the game for Delta Central. Because he was a ranking member, he was eligible to contest for—and win—the position of Deputy Senate President (DSP).

As DSP, Omo-Agege didn’t just represent Urhobo; he led Nigeria. That seniority translated into the Federal Polytechnic Orogun, dozens of power transformers across Urhobo land, hundreds of solar streetlights, and a level of national visibility the Urhobo nation had not enjoyed since the days of the Midwest Region. Had the Urhobo nation fallen into the trap of “rotation” or “political expediency” in 2019, we would have sent a newcomer who would have sat in the back row, and none of these landmark achievements would have materialised.

2027: Avoiding the Self-Inflicted Trap
Today, we see a dangerous repeat of history staring us in the face. As the 2027 cycle approaches, the whispers of “political expediency” and “it’s another person’s turn” are beginning to surface. We must ask ourselves: is it the turn of an individual to go and “dance Kerewawa” (make a mere appearance) in Abuja, or is it the turn of the Urhobo nation to finally consolidate its power?

Senator Ede Dafinone is currently bridging a massive gap. He entered the Senate during a period of intense national economic difficulty and regional tension. Despite being a first-timer, he has used his immense corporate goodwill, his international professional connections, and his pedigree to navigate a difficult scenario. He has not been a silent observer.

His gallant interventions during the Okuama crisis were a masterclass in protective representation. When the very soul of the Ewu Kingdom was under threat, Dafinone stood firm. When Urhobo interests were attacked in Warri and Sapele, and when there were attempts to denigrate the stool of the revered Orodje of Okpe, he did not hide behind legislative immunity. He stood in the gap, rebuffing attacks and ensuring that the Urhobo nation was not intimidated. He has reanimated the “Mokoro” and “Salubi” era of Urhobo politics—an era where our leaders were thinkers, protectors, and diplomats.

To abandon Senator Dafinone in 2027 for a “neophyte” would be a catastrophic mistake. A new senator, no matter how well-intentioned, will be a “nobody” in the 11th Senate. They will spend the first two years learning the rules of the House and the next two years trying to make friends. By the time they understand how to lobby for a road or a hospital, the four-year term will be over, and Urhobo will be back at square one.

Conclusion: The Choice for Progress
The Urhobo nation cannot afford to be a “perpetual beginner” in the National Assembly. We cannot continue to sacrifice our collective development on the altar of local political rotations that do not serve our national interest.

If we want a forceful voice that echoes across the floors of the National Assembly, if we want our infrastructure to match our status as a host to major oil and gas assets, and if we want our youth to have access to federal jobs and scholarships, we must play the game by the rules of the Senate. The rule is seniority.

Senator Ede Dafinone has demonstrated the temperament, intellect, and courage to lead. In 2027, the choice is simple: do we send a neophyte to “learn on the job,” or do we send a ranking senator to “finish the job”? For the sake of our children and the future of the Urhobo nation, we must not make the mistake of 2011 again. We must return Senator Dafinone to Abuja.

The Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, Major General Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd), Orhue I, has suspended the controversial amendment of the Sapele-Okpe Community constitution and the creation of a purported fifth quarter that recently triggered tensions within the community.

The royal directive followed a stakeholders’ meeting convened at the Orodje’s Palace in Orerokpe, Delta State, aimed at resolving the crisis surrounding the leadership of the community and the alleged unilateral constitutional changes by the executive led by Chief Onoriode Temiagin.

The revered Monarch, who is also the Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, had, through the Secretary of the Okpe Traditional Council/ Odugu Okpe, Okakuro O.P. Biadoyo, invited parties to the dispute for a stakeholders meeting at his Palace on Monday.

Our source, who was at the meeting, said that Orodje directed that the disputed actions be halted indefinitely. “The purported amendment of the Sapele-Okpe Community constitution and the creation of a fifth quarter is hereby suspended indefinitely,” the Orodje directed during the meeting, which brought together key stakeholders from the community.

The monarch also set aside the vote of no confidence earlier passed on Temiagin and his executive, noting that the leadership should be allowed to complete its tenure since it had only about four months left in office.

The intervention followed rising tensions in the community after leaders of Sapele-Okpe on March 1, 2026, passed a vote of no confidence on Temiagin and his executive over allegations that they secretly amended the community’s constitution and created a new quarter without proper consultations.

The development came after an aborted monthly community meeting held at Okpe Hall on the same day, where members gathered to deliberate on the issue and chart a way forward.

Prominent leaders present at that meeting included Dr. Kingsley Abeke, Secretary of the Sapele-Okpe Community Land Trust Association; Ufuoma Atose; Ovo Abeke; Bright Abeke; Chief Tom Anirah; the community Youth President, Obomine Ekariko; Chief G. Dafinone; and Senator Ede Dafinone, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District and also serves as Chairman of the Sapele-Okpe Community Land Trust Association.

Community members alleged that the Temiagin-led executive amended the constitution to recognise Otonyasere as the fifth quarter of Sapele-Okpe Community without consulting the existing quarters or members of the land trust association, a move they described as controversial and potentially injurious to the community’s legal and proprietary interests.

Tensions escalated days later when thousands of youths from the Community Council gathered staged a peaceful protest on March 4, 2026, demanding a review of the community leadership.

The protesters, who converged early in the morning, marched through major streets of Sapele, chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards with inscriptions such as “We Don’t Have a Fifth Quarter,” “Temiagin Must Go,” and “This Is Sapele-Okpe Community, Not Temiagin Community.”

Speaking during the demonstration, youth leader Ovo Abeke said the protest was aimed at drawing attention to concerns about community governance. “The decision was that he should no longer lead this community. His leadership has not been beneficial to the Sapele-Okpe people. He should step aside and allow peace to return,” Abeke said, adding that the youths wanted steps taken within 48 hours to address their concerns and initiate a leadership transition in line with community procedures.

In a bid to prevent the situation from escalating into a full-blown leadership crisis, the Orodje invited the warring factions to his palace for dialogue.

A letter of invitation issued by the palace had stated: “I am directed by His Royal Majesty, CFR, mni, Orhue I, Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, to invite you to the Palace with a view to resolving the ongoing issues in Sapele, your community.”

At the meeting, the monarch urged both the Sapele-Okpe Community Land Trust Association chairman, Senator Ede Dafinone, and the community chairman, Chief Temiagin, to work closely together to resolve the issues and restore harmony in the community.

Among prominent Sapele-Okpe leaders who attended the palace meeting were okakuro Thompson Okpoko, Professor Sam Oyovbaire, Okakuro Moses Asini, Okakuro Joe Ogufere, Okakuro Senator Ede Dafinone, Okakuro Onoriode Temiagin, Okakuro Godfrey Dafinone, Okakuro Tom Anirah, Okakuro Patrick Akamovba, Dr. Kingsley Abeke, Dr. Austin Arieja, Col. Moses Babuba Abeke, Hon. Godwin Atose, Chief Cyril Ogodo, and Mr. Churchill Ayomanor.

The Orodje’s intervention is expected to calm tensions in the community and open the door for dialogue aimed at resolving the leadership dispute.

Senator Ede Dafinone has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening unity among Urhobo people by hosting the March edition of his “Meet-and-Greet” gathering in Abuja. The event brought together Urhobo sons and daughters from diverse professional backgrounds to foster collaboration and promote collective development within the Urhobo community.

Speaking during the engagement, the lawmaker representing Delta Central Senatorial District emphasised the importance of unity among the Urhobo people, noting that their shared heritage should serve as a foundation for cooperation and mutual support. He encouraged participants to interact freely, exchange ideas and build lasting professional relationships that would benefit the wider Urhobo nation.

According to him, extending a helping hand to one another would enable individuals within the community to grow, thrive and excel in their various professional and personal pursuits.

However, the super Senator stressed that collective progress can only be achieved when members of the community actively support one another, adding that unity must extend beyond words and translate into tangible actions that uplift others.

The event also featured a symbolic moment when one of the guests, Dr. Benjamin Irikefe, presented his book titled Handbook of Skill Acquisition Training and Empowerment Programmes to the senator.
