So we looked at the best parts of the season and the games to watch.

Roosters vs. Rabbitohs, Round 1

This match alone should set the tone for the entire season. The Sydney Roosters have been the most active of all the NRL clubs as they try to put two seasons of disappointment behind them.

Their recruitment drive was spear-headed by the return to the game of Sonny Bill Williams, as well as the recruitment of a new coach in Trent Robinson. They have released Braith Anasta, but Anthony Minichiello should make for a worthy leader at Bondi Junction.

This could be the most exciting pre-season Roosters fans will have enjoyed in a very long time.

Meanwhile, the South Sydney Rabbitohs will hope to build on a very strong 2012 season, which saw them fall just one match short of the grand final.

They have brought Ben Te’o to the club, and he will be a worthy addition to what is already one of the competition’s most feared forward packs.

Greg Inglis’ move to fullback early in the 2012 season paid dividends and he can finally play his own game, something he was unable to do in Melbourne under the shadow of Billy Slater.

This could also be one of the most anticipated seasons in the club’s history since coming back from exile in 2002.

Grand final rematch, Round 3

The third in a string of four straight Thursday night matches features the two teams that contested last year’s grand final, the Storm and the Bulldogs.

The Melbourne Storm were deserving premiers last year given the horror two years the club endured after being caught out for cheating the salary cap in 2010.

Many thought it was the end of the club, and also many thought they would never rediscover their former glory. This cost them Greg Inglis, who has since defected to the South Sydney Rabbitohs. But it took them just one year to return to the summit of the competition, crowned minor premiers in 2011 but falling short of the decider.

2012 was a phenomenal year for the club, as they look to win back the premierships they claim they were wrongly stripped of. Last year was one premiership back. If they can beat the Bulldogs in this early round, they can set the tone for what should be another strong and successful season.

Sharks vs. Dragons, Round 4

Sharks and Dragons fans, put March 30 into your diaries right now. This match will not only be about bragging rights but also how far the two teams have come over the last few years.

Whilst the Dragons were experiencing their best period of success in 2009-11, the Sharks struggled. But last year was the exact opposite.

The Sharks enjoyed a very consistent season all year round whilst the Dragons struggled to put anything together under new coach Steve Price. That’s understandable, because some former top clubs have to go through a rebuilding period. And that’s what the Sharks did.

The results were there for all to see last year as they returned to the finals for the first time since 2008. Now the Dragons can emulate their Shire neighbours and make a strong run again this season.

I have a feeling that whoever wins this fourth round match can set the tone for what should be a great season.

Des Hasler vs. Manly, Round 5

This will be the fourth meeting between the Bulldogs and Sea Eagles since Des Hasler was sensationally sacked as the Sea Eagles coach in the events following their 2011 premiership triumph.

But this seemed to have no effect on the Sea Eagles, where the transition between Hasler and Geoff Toovey was smooth and the club once again featured at the business end of the season.

Their two regular season matches were split last year, as Manly defeated Hasler in Round 8 before he got one back on his old team at his old stomping ground, Brookvale Oval, later in the season. Will be another interesting match to look out for early in the season.

Roosters vs. SBW, Round 6

Bulldogs fans, mark this date into your diary right now: Friday, April 12, 2013. This is your best chance to go out and jeer Sonny Bill Williams all you like, because this will be the ultimate crunch match of the season.

It’ll be the first time SBW runs out against the club he deserted in circumstances that were less than satisfactory in 2008. How the Bulldogs fans will react to him running out in the tri-colours will be interesting, but one thing is for sure, added security will be hired in case anything goes wrong – we just hope not.

Roosters vs. Dragons, Round 7

The NRL’s annual ANZAC Day match does not gain a lot of recognition in Australia, as opposed to the AFL’s version which features Victorian heavyweights Essendon and Collingwood. But this year’s NRL ANZAC Day match will be televised on Channel Nine, going head-to-head against Channel Seven’s coverage of the AFL ANZAC Day match.

Finally, league fans will be able to watch the ANZAC Day match on free-to-air television, as most of the previous matches have only been shown on Fox Sports.

Only twice before (in 2004 and 2010) has the ANZAC Day match been televised on Channel Nine, but with the new television rights, this should be a ratings winner especially in Sydney and Brisbane.

Wests Tigers vs. Sharks, Round 9

Wests Tigers fans will still not be happy after the Sharks recruited some more of their players during the recent off-season.

Chris Heighington and Beau Ryan recently joined Bryce Gibbs, Andrew Fifita, John Morris and Isaac de Gois as imports from Concord currently residing in the Shire during the most recent off-season, and this is sure to earn the ire of the Tigers fans when the two clubs meet in Round 9.

Also, add to that the fact that the Tigers won a controversial first round match last year at Leichhardt Oval, and this will set the tone for a spiteful encounter.

Storm vs. Sea Eagles, Round 10

This is a rematch of last year’s one-sided preliminary final which saw the Sea Eagles’ premiership defence reduced to rabble by a clinical Melbourne Storm side, which was desperate to win back all the honours that they were stripped of in the last two years.

The Sea Eagles have not forgotten about this match and they will want to get one back on the team that ended their premiership defence in such a whimper. The teams have a bitter rivalry which date back to 2007, when Michael Crocker smashed Brett Stewart in the grand final, which was later rendered invalid due to the salary cap breaches.

In 2008 the Sea Eagles inflicted upon the Storm the worst ever grand final defeat any team has ever suffered in NRL history. In 2009 Billy Slater scored four tries as the Storm ended Manly’s premiership defence on the first day of the finals series.

But, most famously, in 2011, the fight between Glenn Stewart and Adam Blair made headlines, right in front of David Gallop, who was attending his first match involving both sides since Manly’s Brett Stewart was wiped out for four weeks by a crime he did not commit, and since Melbourne were stripped of the two premierships for salary cap breaches.

How will the next chapter in this rivalry be written? Find out when they meet in Round 10.

Bulldogs vs. Dragons, Round 12

Whenever these two teams meet, I always go for the Dragons.

I have been a lifelong Dragons supporter and it was a pain seeing them lose to the Bulldogs, a team which I have had a lifelong hatred towards, twice last year. To the point, after last year’s second round match, a Hitler Downfall parody (which has since been removed) was uploaded showing Adolf Hitler gettng very angry and upset about the Dragons’ loss.

I could not believe it either, given the Dragons had just come off a golden point win over Newcastle in Newcastle and the future was looking bright under Steve Price. But it was this defeat that diminished the Dragons’ dominance from the previous three years. Hopefully, there will be no repeat result this year.

Wayne Bennett, Darius Boyd and co. vs. the Dragons, Round 13

In 2010, the super-coach guided the Dragons to the 2010 premiership. Now, in the middle of the season, he will look to plot their downfall.

Last year the Knights struggled to adapt to Wayne Bennett’s no-nonsense game plan as he looked at trying to fit Darius Boyd into an already strong backline spear-headed by Akuila Uate.

Also, Danny Buderus and Kade Snowden returned to the team after stints elsewhere and struggled to rediscover their mojo. As a result, Wayne Bennett did not coach in September for the first time in 21 years.

Now he has the chance to help the Knights capitalise on what should be a strong start to the season for them.

SBW returns to ANZ Stadium, Round 15

The Bulldogs and Roosters will have already met earlier in the season, but this is the ultimate chance for Bulldogs fans to boo and jeer Sonny Bill Williams as he returns to Bulldogs territory for the first time since deserting the club in 2008.

A large crowd and extra security will be guaranteed for what should be one of the most explosive matches of the season. In 2008, Bulldogs fans turned their back on Willie Mason when he ran out in Roosters colours, but it was Mason who had the last laugh as the Roosters recorded a victory on that April night five years ago.

Whatever the case, Sonny Bill can be expected to be given an unwelcome reception by the fans he betrayed in July 2008.

Cowboys vs. Sea Eagles, Round 18

North Queensland fans will still be feeling a little bit of anger towards the Sea Eagles after the Kieran Foran “hand of god” try in last year’s semi finals. It was that refereeing blunder, which ultimately cost the Cowboys a berth in the preliminary finals and referees bosses Bill Harrigan and Stuart Raper their jobs.

The refereeing standard in 2012 was atrocious, from the Foran try to the Greg Inglis State of Origin try that should have never been.

The Cowboys vs. Sea Eagles semi was the lowest point in the season-long refereeing debacle and subsequently Harrigan and Raper were given their marching orders.

Cowboys fans have long accused Kieran Foran of “lying” and this is their chance to unleash on him when the Sea Eagles run out onto Dairy Farmers Stadium on July 15.

Sharks vs. Luke Lewis, Round 20

Another crunch match to look forward to late in the season. In mid-2012, Luke Lewis announced that he was leaving the Panthers and subsequently joined the Cronulla Sharks. He betrayed the club that he served for so long.

Though the match will be played in Cronulla, Penrith fans will already be planning the long trip so they can show the Sharks fans where Lewis really belongs.

Meanwhile, the Sharks will be out to prove that the decision to recruit Lewis, among others, pays off with a masterful display.

Panthers vs. Michael Jennings, Round 21

Just a week after facing up to Luke Lewis, the Panthers will face another player who betrayed his junior club in favour of more money at the Roosters.

Michael Jennings will return to the place which set him up for the success that he has enjoyed in his career, though this time it will be in the colours of the Sydney Roosters.

Panthers fans will still be feeling angry over Jennings’ decision to leave the club he has called home for so many years and already have early August put down in their diaries, so that they can show Jennings how angry and betrayed they feel towards him.

Again, expect a very explosive match.

Rabbitohs vs. Bulldogs, Round 24

This should be the perfect time for both clubs to gear up before the finals series. I am expecting both clubs to still be in contention for the finals series by the time they meet in Round 24.

The Rabbitohs claimed a win over the boys from Belmore early last year but couldn’t fall back on that experience in the preliminary final last year.

Hopefully they will be a better team this time around, and although the finals will be two to three weeks away, it’s the perfect time for the Rabbitohs to flex their muscles against a team that is virtually bulletproof. Because it takes skill and patience to beat a team like the Bulldogs.

Sea Eagles vs. Storm, Round 25

This match will feature two more teams that I expect to feature at the business end of the season. The Sea Eagles have enjoyed a period of sustained success and are the only club not to have missed the finals since 2004.

The Storm have also produced a period of (tainted) success in the same era, but the honours they won between 2006 and 2010 mean nothing. The corresponding match in 2011 produced fireworks with the Stewart/Blair brawl, but what will happen next in the bitter rivalry between the two clubs?

Rabbitohs vs. Roosters, Round 26

I expect both clubs to have enjoyed a successful season by the time the finals roll around. If these two clubs are still in finals contention by the time the final round of the regular season rolls around, this match will determine which of the Rabbitohs or Roosters will be well placed to make an assault at the premiership.

One team out of these two could be out of finals contention but one thing is for sure: that team will have entered the season high on expectations but under perform during the season. I’m expecting both teams to make the finals this year.

After what we saw last year, 2013 should be a very interesting and exciting season for rugby league fans. The new television rights deal, the independent commission and a new CEO should change the direction of the game for the better.

The results will be there for all to see by the end of the season, that’s for sure.

And in true typical fashion, it ended up at O’Malley’s bar in the Queen St Mall. A few of the lads he had played with over the last three years came to have one last beer and Irish singalong, even managing to attract some of the local female attention, which didn’t go unnoticed between the group.

And what are some of the cool things he is getting up to in the next 12 months? Snowboarding in Japan, living in Canada and travelling through Europe. Not a bad way to sum up a year!

All the best Damo with your adventures. And we can’t wait to have the reunion special on your way back home!

Most young people that come from our Commonwealth sister countries are coming over on working holiday visas. You get at least one year, you get to work, travel and it’s enough flexibility and time to see if you enjoy Australia. Some see this visa as an easy ticket to their Gap Year, buying them time to their next career step or personal goal.

I thought of this post as a couple of conversations with people drove me to think, are they aware that there are different visas for people looking to migrate? And a skilled visa is just one of them.

Now when you think of skilled immigrants, you naturally think of doctors, engineers and project managers. Well, I certainly did!

So I did a bit of research, and read the latest list of skilled migrants potentially eligible for this visa and some on the list pleasantly surprised me. In a nutshell, here are some ones I wasn’t aware of. You can look at the complete list at http://www.immi.gov.au

Does it sound too good to be true? Well, of course you have to meet some criteria. You can’t just stand up and say, “Yes, I am an architect!” and assume that’s enough. You have to go through some assessments, formal expressions of interest and a few more things that prove that you have credibility in your field and are also willing to contribute to the Australia Economy.

Oh and accountants are on that list! I was surprised as we seem to have every fifth person with accounting qualifications. It doesn’t take you years to study (unlike a medical career) so this might be another way of creating more skills and therefore make you more employable for potential organisations.

Cue Fraser Island. Off the coast of Queensland, and across for Hervey Bay, Fraser is the world’s largest sand island stretching over 123 kilometres.

And with hardly an inhabitants, it has become a popular destination for travellers and locals alike. And it’s easy to see why.

One of the best things about this island (in my opinion of course) would be Lake MacKenzie. You see, I’m not one for loving crashing into waves on the beach, as I suffer from a little water anxiety so the calm and clear waters of MacKenzie fit my ideal beach scenario.

How do you get there? Well from Brisbane is under four hours drive and you head North. It’s best to stay at Fraser for at least a night, two days to make the most of the travel time. Camping on the beaches is definitely one of the best things you can do but beware of dingos (wild native dogs for you who aren’t familiar with them).

Oh and I forgot to mention, one of the coolest things is if we you have a 4WD, or can borrow one, is that you drive along the beach front – truly epic. Don’t even attempt in the softer sands though as more than once, a 4WD gets stuck and it may seem funny at the time, but your insurance costs usually tone that humour down quick sticks!

It’s on the cards for Poms2Oz to do a weekend trip next year with some of the members. And I can’t wait!!!

Archive is a medium size bar located in the heart of West End, Brisbane. Over the last few years they have managed to acquire a cult-like following by providing something different to your average bar/pub. Archive has something for everyone -except maybe a XXXX Gold or other mainstream Aussie beers (no great loss there). The atmosphere is relaxed and there always seems to be something on: Bingo on Mondays, Trivia on Tuesdays, 2-4-1 meals on Wednesdays and live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights.

There are pool competitions for all the sharks out there and couches to laze on if you are feeling a little light headed. For die-hard beer fans you can’t go past the beer academies held once a month (give or take). On these special Thursday nights, Archive closes off the back bar and treat 24 lucky patrons with 4 large craft beers and a specially prepared three course meal to match -not to mention the informative presenters who give little insights into the craft beer scene and who patiently explain to a novice like me how the hell hops + water + malt = beer. And from $50 a head, it’s a very cheap night out! Needless to say, Archive is well worth a visit whilst in Brisbane. It’s where you’ll find me most weekends and the odd Wednesday

Where do I start? First of all, I have to admit that I am new on the beer scene. It’s never been my ‘thing’. I have enjoyed for years, being one of those girls who happily sips her wine whilst everyone else around her is enjoying a nice coldie. I couldn’t understand how this yeasty, hoppy, bitter tasting brew could evoke such a passionate response from most of the male (and female) population. I always described myself as a wine lover over beer any day. Until… I went overseas.

First stop was Vietnam.

“There is no way I am drinking beer”, I had naively decided. But when everyone else is doing it and you’ve been walking for hours on end and the menu has nothing but the best of Vietnam’s beer -you have to compromise. So compromise I did. Suddenly, I was looking forward to that reward in the form of “beery” goodness at the end of each day. It didn’t matter that I was sitting on child-size stools in the middle of Hanoi drinking 25 cent beers. I didn’t care, I was traveling and in six weeks had somehow become a ‘beer lover’? Soon I was seeking out the best beer in each country, Cambodia, Thailand, it didn’t matter, I wanted to know what was good.

When I returned Australia I was a changed woman. Although I still love my wine, beer has come up into equal first place and quite often I will agonize over what my beverage of choice will be for the night. But I have to say beer in Australia has certainly surprised me. Once my eyes were opened up to this new idea that beer can actually be good, I started to catch glimpses of what can only be described as a ‘beer scene’. Beer has always been popular here, but from my understanding, micro-breweries seem to be popping up everywhere making bigger and better flavours and incorporating a variety of bizarre ingredients and concepts into the humble beer. In the last month alone I have tasted many amazing craft beers, all with their own unique flavours. There have been oatmeal stouts, maple bacon coffee porter ales, apple beers, variations on the German hefferveisen and other whacky masterpieces. There are boutique beer bars emerging all around Brisbane and they usually employ very knowledgable beer enthusiasts who will gladly answer any questions you have.

This year I have been lucky to move into a suburb called West End. For those of you who haven’t had the chance to explore this wonderful part of Brisbane, I am going to let you in on a little secret. It’s a pub called Archive. But I’ll talk more about that in my next blog.

Get up for work and ‘attack the day’….It’s easy to get out of bed early in Brisbane because the sun is usually shining from 6am and it’s not freezing cold. I’ve never known anything like it. It’s a far cry from those days when I used to hit the SLEEP button on my alarm about four times before getting up when i was living back in Sunderland. I actually don’t mind going to work in Australia. The sun plays a big part in that as everyone is happier. Just think of that one week in July that is red hot…..and imagine it being like that for roughly 9 months of the year?? That is my life at present!! After work, Monday night is usually a chilled out one. I might go for a jog or a light gym session, depending on how I feel after the weekend’s game.

TUESDAY

Once work is out of the way, you mainly get a solid training session from around 6.30pm till 8.30pm. I like to work the lads hard on a Tuesday night and for that, I have a Fitness Coach by the name of Tonie Carroll, an ex Australian international Rugby League player who is highly respected throughout all of Australia. Tonie’s sessions are structured so that, whilst you may be feeling the pain of a tough session, you always know that you are getting a genuinely beneficial workout. After a good hour or so with Tonie, I’ll take the lads for a high intensity ball work session that is usually fast paced, competitive and possession orientated in it’s format.

WEDNESDAY

Most of the lads will have a night off on a Wednesday as Tuesday’s session is usually enough to keep them ticking over fitness wise. Fortunately, Wednesday is a great night to relax in Brisbane and quite often a few of the lads will meet up for a bite to eat or a night at the cinema. Most bars in Brisbane have ‘student’ nights through the midweek nights and if you are one of those lads who can handle a work hangover on a Thursday, you might be tempted to stay out for a few cheap drinks with the locals…..and several thousand European backpackers who seem to be out on the drink every night of the week!

THURSDAY

After a day at work, you’ll be keen to get to training and get the ball out. And most of my Thursday sessions will be total ball work as we have a game less than 48 hours later and I don’t want to burn the lads out. We usually go for about an hour and a quarter and it’s mainly keep-ball with games at the end, sometimes shooting drills too. Most of the lads will hang back after training for a while and watch whatever game is on the big screen in the bar.

FRIDAY

The last day of the working week in Australia is very laid back. Most firms will finish at lunchtime and employees head off to the sports bars to sink a few drinks whilst being served by topless waitresses. Obviously you don’t want to have too many drinks with the game the next day, so a night at the Suncorp Stadium to watch the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL (Rugby League) may be in order. If not, there is plenty of sport to watch on TV as well.

SATURDAY

Game day. After a good pre match breakfast and a leisurely morning, you’ll make your way to the ground and prepare for the game. The reserve side will always play directly before the 1st team and most 1st team players will watch the first half before getting ready to warm up etc. The game itself is not as quick as what you’ll be used to in the UK. It’s far too hot to be running about like an idiot for 90 minutes so it’s a little more tactical than back home. After the game, hopefully you’ll be joining in a team ‘song’ which at first I used to think was lame but now I love it. It makes a win even sweeter! After a few celebratory drinks at the club, the lads will usually head into the city to watch the English Premier League games that are shown live from around 10.30pm through till the very early hours of the morning…..and then onto the nightclubs.

SUNDAY

The beauty of living in Brisbane is that you are only a 45 minute drive from the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast and the lads will usually cool down from Saturday’s game by taking a car up or down the road to chill out on the beach surrounded by an array of hot young girls.

It’s not a bad life……

Those in power at United had been impressed with what I had done with Athletic, having taken them from the bottom of Division 2 to the top in less than a year. Athletic would have won the title that season but for a 12 point deduction that was brought about by an administration error that we were helpless to.

It was a huge blow to myself and to the players, who had deservedly received plaudits from around the Brisbane area for the manner in which we acquitted ourselves.

We ended up finishing 7th after the deduction and I resigned from my position immediately. I knew that other offers would come my way and I was right.

Several clubs from higher divisions than Athletic invited me for interviews and I listened to everybody who had something to say.

But I had unfinished business with Division 2. I needed to right the wrongs. I felt as though I had, along with my players, been harshly treated for something that was nothing to do with us and I wanted to take my frustration out on a division that I already knew a fair bit about. So I opted for Bayside United. It was a move that surprised a lot of people. United had finished 4th bottom the year before and were not exactly a big draw.

The first thing I did was to go out and get the best Fitness Coach in the area. An ex Rugby League Australian International called Tonie Carroll. The man is a machine and I wanted him to help me build a team capable of destroying the competition. We started a month earlier than any other team in Brisbane and his methods started to pay off instantly. You could see the improvements week by week.

The other thing that Tonie brought with him was a higher profile than Bayside United had ever had before. This was imperative. It allowed me to bring in players who would normally have turned their nose up at United. All of a sudden we were being talked about. People were starting to take notice and one by one, my targets started to put pen to paper.

Poms2Oz players John Robson and Liam Mulligan followed me from Athletic. I knew that the pair would be big players for us and that their signings would be the start of many more that would follow.

Several more did follow and I worked hard to create a group of players that would work hard and play hard TOGETHER. It’s massive to have a squad who enjoy being with each other. If they like each other, they will fight for each other. And when you get the mix right, it can only work in your favour come match day.

We hit the ground running with big wins over the three favourites for the Championship (Annerley, Holland Park & The Gap). It did two things.

Firstly, it gave the players confidence and secondly it sent a message to everybody. That Bayside United were the real deal. Those three wins set the tone for the first half of the season where we won all but one of our league games, the other being a draw away to high flying Samford Rangers despite having 10 men for over an hour.

We dominated every game, especially second halves where our fitness came into play and we would punish teams who had clearly not worked as hard as we had for months.

The second half of the season saw us continue to win games but not as comfortably as we had done earlier in the season. I put that down to a number of things. Over confidence perhaps, injuries and suspensions certainly and also the added pressure of being favourites took it’s toll. In a strange way though, the 1-0 wins over Grange Thistle and Holland Park in the same week were as satisfying as any of the 5-0 wins we had recorded earlier in the season. There’s just something about winning a tight one that has been a battle from the first whistle.

One team that kept pace with us was Annerley. They just kept on grinding results out week after week. So much so that going into our 3rd last game against each other, a win for the visitors would have put us under a lot of pressure going into the last two games, forcing us to win both to be certain of a title.

With 5 minutes of injury time up, we were 2-1 down and looking like choking. I sent everybody up for a corner and almost certainly that last moment of the match. Poms2Oz players Paul Swithenbank and Liam Mulligan combined to break Annerley hearts and all but wrap up the title for United. It was a great moment and easily the highlight of the season. The emotion that was played out in just one minute was something that those players will struggle to get again in the rest of their careers.

We won the title 6 days later when Annerley dropped points before we played our next game. We were there to see it and followed it up the next day with a celebratory 6-0 away win at lowly Park Ridge. We headed back to Bayside to drink long into the night. It was a fabulous night for everyone connected with the club.

Last week was our last league game against 3rd placed Samford at home. We were presented with the title that day and won the game 6-1 with an impressive performance to finish off a superb season.

It’s been a brilliant year. Not just because we won the title. It’s been more than that. Friendships have been formed and memories have been created. None of the squad will forget the 2012 season, and nobody who was there for Liam Mulligan’s injury time equalizer against Annerley will ever forget that feeling. It was simply magical.
