I hate those wire hangers that inevitably end up infiltrating my organized troops of camel colored slimlines courtesy of the dry cleaner. As I was pilfering the metal transgressors from the ranks, I wondered where wire hangers go to die. Covered in paper, pickled with wire twist ties and blanketed in plastic bags, they aren’t easily recycled. Usually, they sit in a corner pile until I get around to returning them to the dry cleaner to be reused, or so they assure me.

Since the cardboard is printable, they provide a branding or promotional opportunity, ideal for use in retail and hotel environments. At home, you can let your imagination go wild and use the blank cardboard slate to write daily affirmations or love notes to your significant other-or cross the boundaries of organized and use the corrugated to write a list of the people you were with when you last wore the garment, lest you be caught dead in the same outfit twice.

Bubble Wrap in convenient dispenser

Besides being a great product for protective packaging, Bubble Wrap, which incidentally turned 50 earlier this year, is beloved for its innumerable configurations. It’s also just plain fun. Case in point, at my niece’s 4th birthday party, 5 lengths of bubble wrap created the coolest dance floor of all time.

Bubble Wrap manufacturer, Sealed Air, hosts an annual competition entitled, “2010 Bubble Wrap Competition for Young Inventors,” which awards a $10,000 U.S Savings Bond to the winner. The inventions submitted showcased the creative and ingenious use of Bubble Wrap. The winner (pictured here), produced a scientific tool designed as an inexpensive alternative to Petri Dishes.

As any Urbanite will attest, living in a metropolis affords a wealth of convenience in the way of restaurants, culture and social events, but getting around the city with a bulky package or heavy corrugated box doesn’t make the list.

Enter “The Move-It,” courtesy of one of the design engineers up for the UK’s James Dyson Award.

An innovative solution to the everyday urban problem of transporting an oversized cardboard box from point A-point B without a car, “The Move-It,” is a simple kit of self-adhesive cardboard parts, which the user sticks on to a cardboard package, turning it into a lightweight, easy-to-use trolley. It consists of a set of wheels and two different types of handle. A combination of these components allows the user to move boxes of almost any size and shape up to 20Kg.

Not only is “The Move-It” convenient, but it’s also GREEN. Every single component is cardboard. Wheel, axle, chassis and handle can all be mashed up at the recycling facility and made into new cardboard products; and the special contact adhesive that sticks the wheels and handle to the box is designed to dissolve in water.

Widely regarded as a blank canvas with endless creative possibilities, the corrugated box has captured childrens’ imaginations for generations. Give a baby a present and you’ll often find they are more interested in playing with the retail packaging than the toy inside. What child at some point hasn’t fashioned a corrugated bulk container into a playhouse, a castle, or fort?!  The Toy Hall of Fame recognized the popularity of the corrugated box as a toy in 2005 by inducting it into it’s Toy Hall of Fame.
