Ryan Reynolds apparently made a quick exit from his beloved Wrexham FC on Easter Monday via private jet, despite a huge win for the club.

The 46-year-old Hollywood actor didn’t get a chance to stop for a celebratory pint when he touched down in New York just nine hours after the full-time whistle was blown.

The proud owner of the Welsh football club managed to make it back home with the wife of actress Blake Lively, where they were seen holding hands hours after the game.

Ryan reportedly shelled out £100,000 to charter his own flight from Manchester to Teterboro shortly after his team beat title rivals Notts County.

Deadpool star and co-owner of the club, fellow actor Rob McElhenney, 45, has a nervous wait ahead of him as he looks set to clinch promotion to the Vanarama National League Football League.

A pioneering black gay doctor who served the Elephant & Castle community for 45 years, including during the Blitz, has been recognized with a blue plaque at London South Bank University.

The plaque marking the site of Dr Cecil Belfield Clarke’s surgery at the junction of the Newington Causeway and Southwark Bridge Road was unveiled on Wednesday by the Bishop of Croydon and the Barbados High Commissioner.

The plaque is on the outside wall of London’s South Bank University Perry Library, which now occupies the site of the surgery.

Cecil Belfield Clarke came to Britain from Barbados in September 1914 on a scholarship to study medicine at St Catharine’s College Cambridge.

In 1920 he founded the GP Surgery at 112 Newington Causeway from where he served the local community for 45 years until his retirement in 1965. The Surgery was one of the few buildings left standing after the Blitz.

The doctor’s name lives on through Clarke’s rule, a mathematical formula used to calculate the proper dose of medication for children.

In 1931 he was one of the founders of the League of Colored Peoples, along with Jamaican physician Harold Moody and others who fought for racial equality in housing, health care, child care, and successfully challenged the ban on color in the British Army.

The plaque is one of more than 80 monuments to notable black people erected in London by the Nubian Jak Community Trust. Dr. Clarke’s plaque has been sponsored by Tony Warner of Black History Walks.

The ceremony on Wednesday was preceded by speeches from a number of invited guests, including Dr Latifa Patel, from the British Medical Association, and Dr Colin Higgins, from St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge.

L’myah Sherae, who researched the life of Dr Clarke while studying at St Catharine’s College, shared some of her findings.

Kamran Abassi, editor-in-chief of the British Medical Journal, read a letter that Dr Clarke sent to the BMJ in 1962 and quoted from the obituary that appeared in the journal after his death in 1970.

In his speech, local historian Stephen Bourne painted a wartime picture of Elephant & Castle and explained how Dr Clarke commuted daily, from the Barnet home he shared with his partner Edward Walter, to see his Southwark patients. .

Rachel Picton, Dean of LSBU’s School of Community Health and Allied Health, said: “Dr Cecil Belfield Clarke and his contribution to this community will now be properly recognized and remembered, and his legacy will live on, at the site where he diagnosed, treated and cared for patients with the passion, expertise, and commitment that we aim to instill in all of our health and social care graduates.

“It’s a great role model to learn from and a story to be proud of.”

LSBU Chancellor Sir Simon Hughes added: “We are one of the few universities in Britain where the majority of our students come from global majority communities, and we are very proud of that.”

The Bishop of Croydon Rt Revd. Rosemarie Mallet, who was born in Barbados and taught at LSBU before her ordination, told the gathering that Clarke’s story had been “made invisible” and appreciated efforts to raise awareness about her life and work.

He said he would urge local primary and secondary schools associated with Southwark Cathedral to teach their pupils about Dr Clarke and his history.

His Excellency Milton Inniss, High Commissioner for Barbados in London, thanked all those who had “brought Dr Clarke’s story to light”.

Billy Vunipola will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury that has jeopardized his chances of winning the World Cup.

Saracens No8 was carried off the Stade Marcel Deflandre field on a stretcher in Sunday’s 24-10 loss in the Champions Cup quarter-final at La Rochelle.

Vunipola underwent some explorations yesterday that have led Saracens to rule him out for the remainder of the current campaign.

Barnet club bosses have not put a clear timetable on Vunipola’s recovery, but the 30-year-old will now face an uphill battle to be ready for the autumn World Cup in France.

“Billy is an important player on and off the court for us in terms of who he is as a senior player,” Saracens assistant coach Kevin Sorrell said. “His influence will be missed. During the last four or five weeks we had been very pleased with what we had seen of Billy.

“He hurts us a lot with and without the ball. Anyone who has had a long-term injury has two sides. There’s the physical side and there’s the mental side as well and the support you need around that. Everyone will be looking out for Billy.”

Vunipola has achieved good form with Saracens this season, but was omitted from new England boss Steve Borthwick’s Six Nations squad.

The powerful ball carrier was keen to use the business end of this campaign to make his case for an England return, as an added bonus amid helping Saracens push for even more honours. Now both joint goals are gone, and Sarries must manage without another striker in the back line for the end of their Premiership campaign.

Theo McFarland was already long absent after knee ligament surgery, while Andy Christie suffered a broken arm in the Champions League last 16 win over Ospreys that also ended his season prematurely. .

Andy woodcutter They are looking to add more positive memories at Bromley before the end of the season, with the 51-year-old South London in charge of their 100th game in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Barnet.

Woodman joined the Ravens from Arsenal, where he was chief goalkeeper, in March 2021. He has also held positions as goalkeeping coach at Charlton, Crystal Palace, West Ham and Newcastle United.

He he has won 42 of the 101 games since he replaced Neil Smith at the NL club, drawing 32 and losing 27. The Ravens have averaged 1.56 points per game in his time with the club.

woodcutter he guided Bromley to the play-off places at the end of the 2020-21 season, recording seven wins, four draws and one loss in the last 13 games. They lost 3-2 to Hartlepool in the play-off quarter-final.

woodcutterThe first full season of ‘in charge saw the club finish tenth and seven points out of last place in the play-offs. The highlight of the 2021-22 season came in the FA Trophy, beating Wrexham 1-0 at Wembley in the final.

The Ravens are eighth this season, one place and two points behind Eastleigh, who is in the last play-off position.

“There have been so many standout moments so far,” Woodman said. “Obviously guiding the club to the play-off was a highlight. Winning a trophy at Wembley was another, against such a good team at Wrexham.

“I want the club to come back to the play-offs first this season and who knows after that. I have enjoyed my time here and we have to keep pushing forward.”

woodcutter he has also spoken of his pride in using young players to achieve results and advance to the play-offs in the company of some of the biggest spenders in the league.

“It’s the way we have to do things,” he said. “We have to cut our cloth accordingly. We have some good young players coming up and we want to play with them. That’s what balances the books.

“It makes me very proud to see these youngsters progress and play at the level that they are playing at. We’re really not in a bad place in terms of the size of the team with the size of the budget that we’ve had.”

Radio Song (1991)

When they decided to ditch their “indie darlings” label and make music that could top the charts, REM did it with surprising ease thanks to huge hits like Losing My Religion and Shiny Happy People. However, they never lost their ambition to play with expectations and on Radio Song they even included a guest rapper with KRS-One. Stipe has since said that the song was piss on the band themselves. Either way, and despite the fairly basic rapping, it holds up surprisingly well.

Finn Attreed of Barnet has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.

He pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply Schedule A drugs, including cocaine and the synthetic drug 2C-B, as well as possession with intent to supply Schedule B drugs, namely ketamine.

The event occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 5, 2022, when the festival’s security team received reports of a man going from tent to tent announcing the sale of drugs.

Attreed was then apprehended and found to be transporting a quantity of drugs.

Thames Valley Police officers were called to the scene and arrested Attreed, charging him the following day.

In addition to the drugs he was carrying, agents seized a burner phone containing messages related to drug deals, drug paraphernalia, and amounts of drugs.

At his sentencing hearing at Oxford Crown Court on Thursday April 6, Attreed received a total of three years and nine months in prison.

Detective Constable Daniel Smith, from the Witney Police Station-based Priority Crimes Team, said: “Finn Attreed attended the Wilderness Festival with the intention of making money from drug dealing.

“He traveled from London to try his luck in our area, however security were clever with their actions and detained him as he tried to sell his sales pitch to the campers.

“I hope he uses his jail time to reflect on his actions.

“Thames Valley Police will not tolerate drug trafficking within our communities. We will go after the traffickers and take them to court to decide their sentence.

“In addition, we will continue to work with our partners at Wilderness Festival and would like to thank them for their swift actions that led to this conviction.”

<interaction class="apester-media" data-token="610152711b664d000c5ab952"/>

Theo McFarland was already long absent after knee ligament surgery, while Andy Christie suffered a broken arm in the Champions League last 16 win over Ospreys that also ended his season prematurely. .

The return to fitness of second row Callum Hunter-Hill offsets the growing concerns of the back row, with Nick Isiekwe and Maro Itoje both options to appear on the back row and also blocked.

On strike in February (Image: Unison South West)

Thousands of Environment Agency workers in England planned a four-day strike starting Friday this week over wages. Workers have organized months of occasional walkouts and other actions in which workers have withdrawn from “on call” incident response shifts.

But government ministers have not tried to invite unions into wage negotiations, says the Unison union. The union’s latest action means personnel working on coastal sea defences, tackling water pollution, waste fires and garbage dumps were scheduled to leave from 7:00 p.m. Friday until 7:00 a.m. Monday morning.

The government has refused to allow the Environment Agency to improve the 2 per cent plus £345 pay increase given to staff in the autumn.

12 weeks at Rosyth Docks

Around 100 Kaefer contractors at the Rosyth shipyard in Scotland are scheduled for a 12-week strike from Monday of next week until July 10. The workers are painters, cleaners, scaffolders and support service personnel.

Unite union members supported the action 98 percent after Kaefer failed to make a formal pay offer. The bosses, after the strike vote, offered a 7.2 percent raise that the workers rejected.

A month on the streets of St. Mungo’s

Workers at the St Mungo’s homeless charity are on strike for a month from Monday 24 April.

The bosses have yet to resolve a pay dispute dating back to 2021. The four-week action is scheduled to continue until May 21.

Halt redundancies after Hartlepool wage strike

After a six-day strike earlier this year, Hartlepool metalworkers are facing redundancy.

Workers at the Expanded Metal Company, affiliated with the GMB union, went on strike to demand a wage increase. They won a 7.5 per cent pay rise, a lump sum of £600 and better sick pay.

But not 60 days later, the workers found out that the company was laying off ten of them. The GMB union said it would fight the dismissals. The workers should strike again to save their jobs.

University strikes should inspire a broader fight

Workers at Barnet and Southgate University in north London voted in favor of the strike with 96 percent of a 67 percent turnout.

The union of members of the UCU has already been on strike for three days after the employers offered a salary increase of 1 percent for last year and the previous one. His latest offer is a pathetic 2.5 percent for this academic year.

Last month, workers at Britain’s universities indicated they would be ready to strike in a consultative vote. Union leaders should formally vote on them as soon as possible.

Wage deal reduces power of power grid strike

Pay strikes by some 1,300 power grid workers in London and the south-east and east of England have been called off after a majority voted to accept a pay offer.

Unite union members at UK Power Networks voted for an 18 per cent raise over two years plus a one-time payment of £750. That’s a pay cut in real terms.

None of us who had the privilege of knowing Félix Masud Piloto (Havana, December 6, 1950-Chicago, March 10, 2023) would argue that he was a bridge between unknown friends, between the cultures and academies of the United States and Cuba. , between the most rigorous knowledge and other “less scientific” areas of life, such as sports. He was that, and to a superlative degree.

PhD in History from Florida State University, Professor at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, and Professor at DePaul University, Chicago, from 1990 until his death on March 10 of this year, Masud traveled frequently to Cuba, where I had friends everywhere. I remember him as a good man, with an affable character and an easy laugh, with whom you could talk about any subject. Always affectionate and sincere, his nobility was like the letter of introduction to make friends.

I met him on one of his many trips to Cuba, his homeland —where he left as a child, in the company of his father in 1962—, thanks to one of his best friends, also mine, Norberto Codina. In no time, we formed a friendship that lasted forever. We would see each other on the island and at the LASA (Latin American Studies Association) congresses, in Barcelona, Montreal or Boston, events in which he actively participated. In 2001 I invited him along with his American students to the event for the centenary of Wifredo Lam that was held at the Contemporary Art Center that bears the artist’s name, an occasion that was very important for Félix and his students due to the presence of Fidel Castro.

These days we remember him in the tribute that we wanted to pay him after his death. The headquarters of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) received us. Beyond a formal meeting, the event became a heartfelt exchange of memories and anecdotes that Félix would have enjoyed very much, without a doubt. We remember his long years of teaching and research, especially at De Paul University, where he was recognized as Professor Emeritus and where he directed, between 1992 and 2009, the Center for Latino Research and founded Dialogue magazine in 1996.

A firm defender of academic exchanges between Cuba and the United States, Masud brought to the island numerous groups of students who toured the country receiving lectures by Cuban artists and academics as part of his Cuba Program. Masud promoted the direct physical contact of the students with the Latin American realities (they also visited Chile and Argentina), since he understood that through these channels personal and scientific relationships were solidified that contributed greatly to the friendship between the peoples. From Cuba he also received the Distinction for National Culture (2007), in an unforgettable night in which the presence of his affections from this side of the world prevailed.

Of Félix it is also necessary to mention his three decades teaching disciplines such as Latin American History (20th century), Social Revolutions on the continent, Migrations, Relations between Cuba and the United States, Cinema and History, among others. He was part of the editorial committees of various magazines, including the prestigious Cuban Studiesand master’s and doctoral thesis committees. His last activity, before retirement, was directing the master’s degree in history at DePaul University. He was the author of several books of essays, in Spanish and English, among them With open arms (1988), From welcome exiles to illegal immigrants: Cuban migration to the United States (nineteen ninety six), Mariel 1980: consequences of a politicized immigration policy (2005), and an active lecturer.

Several intellectuals, writers and professors attended this last tribute in Cuba. We shared anecdotes, images and little by little we portrayed the endearing friend who also had incomparable support in his life partner, María Masud (who had left Cuba during Operation Peter Pan).

Everyone spoke about teaching, research, exchanges, sports, their solid and invariable friendship, their genuine love for Cuba in a panel made up of Norberto Codina, Roger Ricardo, Olga Fernández and Jesús Arboleya, who then gave space to the assistants. among whom I can cite Miguel Barnet, Nancy Morejón, Antonio Aja, Gisela González, Rafael Betancourt, Zayda Capote and Johana Tablada. All of them turned the emotional morning into the evocation that we owed to our great Felix.

Another tribute will be held on April 15 in the city of Chicago; a funeral at Dignity Memorial. There he will also be remembered by so many friends that Félix knew how to cultivate throughout his fruitful life, and by his students, with whom he always shared his wisdom and nobility.
