Firefox Basics

The easiest way to learn about Firefox is to go ahead and download it (it's free). You can find it at the official site: http://www.getfirefox.com. There you'll find the latest version of Firefox: Firefox 3. If you're hesitant to install and learn to use a new program, rest assured that Firefox looks and acts very similar to Internet Explorer and most other Web browsers. There's even a feature for IE users that lists the expressions with which you're familiar and tells you the corresponding Firefox names for those functions.

At the top of the screen, you'll find the Awesome Bar (a space for typing in Web addresses), a small search panel and a row of buttons -- the typical tools for common Web-surfing activities. Firefox History

The origins of Firefox can be traced directly to Netscape, a company whose Web browser, Netscape Navigator, was the dominant browser before Microsoft developed Internet Explorer. The internal company name for the browser was Mozilla. Eventually, Netscape released the source code for Navigator under an open source license, meaning anyone could see and use the code. A non-profit group was set up to direct the development of browsers using this code. This group became the Mozilla Foundation in 2003.

However, Firefox is not the browser the Mozilla group would have released if everything had gone as planned. Like Netscape Navigator before it, the Mozilla software was becoming bigger and bigger as more features were added in -- a problem in software development known as "feature creep" or "bloat." Enter Blake Ross, a computer enthusiast who first started helping out the Mozilla project as a hobby when he was 14. Instead of accepting feature creep, Ross decided to start developing his own Mozilla-based browser, focusing on a streamlined and simple version. Software developer Dave Hyatt also played a major role. Ross was joined by Ben Goodger in 2003, and development progressed rapidly from that point.

At first, the browser that would be known as Firefox was known as Phoenix. There were trademark problems, however, so the name was changed to Firebird. Another software company had a project known as Firebird, so the name was again changed.Firefox was chosen because it was distinctive, and no one else was using it (although it turned out a European company did own the trademark to the word Firefox, and a deal was reached).

When Firefox was still in the beta stage (when a program hasn't been publicly released, but people can download and use it to help find and fix problems), it was already generating a healthy buzz among tech-savvy Web surfers. In just four months after the official release on Nov. 9, 2004, an estimated 23 million people downloaded Firefox. Web tracker OneStat.com reported on Nov. 22, 2004, that Internet Explorer's share of Web browser use had dropped five percent since May of that year. Firefox had a user percentage of 4.5 percent. Current estimates (as of August 2008) have Firefox's market share at nearly 20 percent [source: Net Applications].

Firefox is an alternative browser to Internet Explorer and other web browsers.

A Web browser is sort of like the tires on your car. You don't really give them much daily thought, but without them, you're not going anywhere. The second something goes wrong, you definitely notice.

Chances are, you're reading this article on a version of Microsoft's Internet Explorer. It's the browser that comes already installed on Windows operating systems; most people use Windows, and most Windows users don't give a second thought to which browser they're using. In fact, many people aren't aware that they have an option at all.

Options are out there, however -- some people call them "alternative browsers," and one of them has been steadily chipping away at Internet Explorer's dominance. It's called Firefox. From its origins as an offshoot of the once popular Netscape browser, Firefox is building a growing legion of dedicated users who spread their enthusiasm by word of mouth (or blog).

For a while, it seemed like Microsoft's Internet Explorer was going to dominate the browser market indefinitely. Its competitors included Netscape Navigator and the AOL Browser -- and it soundly beat both of them. When Firefox debuted, it faced an uphill battle to claim space in the market. But Firefox's popularity has grown since its debut, particularly among Web administrators and developers.

The word is spreading quickly. On June 17, 2008, Firefox held an event called Download Day as it unveiled the final build of Firefox 3. The goal for the event was to encourage people to download the new browser and establish a record for the most downloads of a single application within a 24-hour period. It seems everyone these days is talking about blogging. Everywhere I go, I find articles and forums devoted to this craze. I also have heard from many home business owners who are trying to figure out what a blog is and how they can use one to their benefit.

The term "blog" is short for

"weblog", which just means an online journal

or "log". You can jot down personal thoughts and notes, post articles you’ve written or keep track of interesting websites you find. The sky is the limit, it seems, when it comes to blogging. A blog is something entirely of your own creation and you can use it to share your thoughts with the world, well….with anyone you can get to read it anyway.

Once you’ve created your blog, you will need to decide how you will use it. Will it be a personal blog, full of thoughts and comments for yourself alone or maybe your family? Or will it be a business blog, with articles and tips for potential customers? If you want your blog to be found by others, blogging experts recommend that you begin by setting the title and descriptions for your blog. These are similar to the the title and descriptions you set for your website. Try to make them meaningful because they are what people will see when your blog is returned in a Search Engine. If your description is simply "my blog", you may not draw the attention you’d like.

If you are blogging in the hopes of attracting customers, make sure to use wise use of words and links in your blogs. Try to avoid the "click here" link. Instead, opt for links within descriptive sentences. Add the HTML link within the sentence and attach it to the words that are closely related to the page or site you are linking to. For example, to link to my website I would not use "click here" as my link. I would say, "Please visit Christian Work at Home Moms for home-based work resources."
There are many ways to get your blog noticed outside of optimizing them for Search Engines. For instance, there are entire websites devoted to listing blogs dedicated to any topic that you can think of. One of the best such websites devoted to women-created blogs, is BlogDaisy.com. You can also use free tools such a FeedBurner.com to track the traffic on your blog and to create a dynamic title box that can be used to display your blog headlines on your website or even in your email signature. relevancy – content is King! The search engines realize that the more relevant their listings are, the more people will like their service and use them. Basic!

Google is a prime example of this. The famous Google Bot which is in charge of "checking" websites and adding them to the Google index is a lot smarter than it used to be. It looks over the content of your entire website, not just a single page. It will then determine what your website is relevant to and make a decision. It will decide whether or not to include your page in the natural listings or not. Upon choosing to add your site, it will then determine what keyword (s) to list it under and where it will be ranked within the results. This is where and why you need to fine tune your website and optimize for the keywords YOU WANT!

Regardless of how "pretty" your website is, content is what the search engine spiders look at. When a spider hits your page it is going to scan the entire website, including the links that you have on your page. It will determine if you meet the minimum content requirement to be listed in their directory. The content on your page needs to have some "BULK" to it . By this we mean that you should write multiple paragraphs on your page using relevant words to what it is that you want to be listed under. The spider can't read your images – but they can read the image file names – why not name your images using some of your relevant keywords?

Keyword Density Having the right keyword density is one aspect of the SEO "game" that you can control. If you want your web page to be listed for the phrase "dog training", you need to make sure that this phrase appears multiple times within the text on your website. A keyword density of between 2% and 5% is a general rule that you can follow. This will make the focus keyword/phrase apparent to the search engine spiders and will get you a better chance of being listed for this keyword.
Multi-Page Sites Having a multi-page site is becoming more and more important to the search engines. Single landing pages with no links to other pages on the same domain are very rarely listed in top positions. Make your page a multi-level site.

All you need to do is create a number of relevant web pages, and link them all together. This isn't as difficult as it sounds. Instead of one page of 2000 words – break it up into 4 pages of 500 words each.
Title: You ALWAYS want to have your focus keyword/phrase in the title of your page. When you do get listed, the search engines use the title tag as the first line of the listing. So make sure your title is catchy and highly relevant to what your focus keyword is.
Incoming links Incoming links to your page do still play a roll in your search listings, but it is nothing like it used to be. It is important that when you do get links, you work on "one-way" links...or pages that only link to your site, not link back. Also, make sure that you aim to get links to your page on relevant websites. A good way to do this is through industry partners, forums, and social bookmarking websites. In addition you want these links to be from high page rank sites.

Focus Keywords: Make sure that your focus keywords do not have millions of previously indexed sites. Your chances will be very low if you are trying to get a top listing for a saturated and highly competitive keyword. Instead, look for targeted keywords with a smaller search competition. If a keyword is being searched 1,000 or even 500 times a month; that's 1000 or 500 visitors that you will have compared to zero if you try to compete against those millions!

man in the free world wouldn’t be expected to understand a QWERTY keyboard, but it’s definitely a change. However, when in Washington there are many considerations. Imagining the President mistakenly hitting the "send" button on a classified message is an ulcer-creating scenario for white house counsel. The answer? Smartphone’s just got genius.

Internet rumors and tech bloggers report President Obama has been given an ultra-encrypted, NSA-approved Smartphone with elegant circuitry. Most credible reports name the General Dynamics Sectéra Edge as the modified unit now in use by the 44th President. General Dynamics, a defense contractor not known for cellular phones, has reportedly created an elite unit worthy of the executive branch. How did they do it?

The answer to this question is a mix of facts and innuendo. According to General Dynamics’ Michael Guzelian, the Sectéra was originally designed for NSA/military use. It is not available for consumer purchase. The cost? $3,350. Its abilities are extreme, protecting both voice and data communications. With one touch of a button, the unit switches from "unclassified" to "top-secret" transmission.
The efficiency with which this unit was ready for President Obama has many questioning whether General Dynamics designed this much earlier in the presidential campaign, much like the presumptuous NBA Championship hats that are printed at half-time. While neither General Dynamics or the white house will confirm the exact unit being used, the very existence of such sophisticated features elevates private industry.

Government and private industry have historically shared technologies. General Dynamics reportedly beta tested their unit for 15 months. X-TEL, through its subsidiary, recently released a security application called JTrek available to consumers. Choosing the right blogging platform is a very important first step. You can liken it to needing to find the perfect car. Sure, they will all get you from point A to point B, but some do it better than others. There are some that are faster, more effective, and more reliable.

The first kinds of blogging platforms are the free versions of popular software. Blogger.com is the one that is owned by Google and it's very easy to use and completely free. The only issue is that you don't really own your blog as it is hosted by Blogger. While the software is great, you're pretty much out of luck if they decide to pull the plug on you.
