The continuous surface creates a modern, minimalist overall ambience and makes the bathroom appear more spacious.

Photo: TECE SE

In line with the trend towards minimalist bathroom design, TECE is launching a new shower channel variant – for a seamless floor finish that looks as though it were cast in one piece. Thanks to the TECEdrainline’s mineral cast coating, levelling compound is designed to adhere to it, creating a minimalist look without any breaks in the material. With various drainage options and optional mounting feet, the shower channel is suitable for a wide range of installation scenarios.

Modern bathrooms are increasingly adopting a seamless design that creates a sense of visual spaciousness through joint-free surfaces. Until now, however, compromises often had to be made, at least in the shower area. With TECEdrainline, levelled floors can now be extended into the shower area completely seamlessly. This is made possible by a mineral cast coating on the channel flange and insert, to which, according to the manufacturer, levelled floor coverings adhere. All that remains is a narrow water inlet resembling a shadow gap.

Shower channel option for a personalised and minimalist design

The seamless stainless steel channel body features a mineral cast coating on the channel flange and insert to ensure a bond-based installation with liquid floor coverings. The factory-fitted sealing collar allows for simple and precise installation. The drain can be fitted at the side at three different heights or directed downwards, allowing it to be integrated into the shower design to suit individual requirements.

Photo: TECE SE

The shower channel set comprises a channel body and insert made from 1.4301 (304) stainless steel. The channel flange and insert are coated with mineral casting to ensure a bond-based installation with liquid floor coverings. The Seal System sealing sleeve is already fitted at the factory. The drain, which must be ordered separately, is available in four different versions: one vertical variant and three side variants in different heights. This provides greater design freedom during planning and installation. Optional mounting feet also allow for flexible height adjustment and positioning of the channel body within the screed during installation.

Whether microcement, mineral-based levelling compound or liquid resin – liquid floors are frequently used in modern, minimalist bathroom design thanks to their customisable materials. The visual advantage: the fewer visual breaks the eye encounters on the walls and floor, the larger the room appears. TECEdrainline for liquid floors capitalises on this effect. This creates a harmonious bathroom ambience that combines functionality with understated elegance.

short distance from Aachen, six ecological microhouses designed by mlab.design
have been developed, seamlessly integrating sustainability, mindful living, and
high-quality design within a compact space. Products from Keuco are central to the fittings in the bathrooms.
They complement the architecture of the holiday homes and combine
functionality, durability and timeless design.

At the heart of the design is the idea of
creating spaces where people feel comfortable and rejuvenated – places of calm,
clarity, and inspiration. The interior design of the microhouses draws
inspiration from nature and features a minimalist, precise design language.
High-quality materials, lots of wood, natural colours and carefully selected
details characterise the atmosphere. Each component serves a clear purpose and
contributes to the overall experience: more focus, more order, more relaxation.

A central component of this design principle are
the Keuco products that are inserted in the baths of the
microhouses. The matt black version in
particular fits into the calm, modern colour concept of the houses and still
provides a tasteful contrast.

Black as a contrast in a modern colour concept

Keuco’s products – such as the IXMO tap shown here – are designed to create a calm, uncluttered aesthetic that complements the architectural vision of micro-homes.

Sink mixer taps IXMO soft and thermostatic
shower mixer taps Plan Blue, which impress with their
delicate design and intuitive operation, are among the products inserted. The
bathroom fittings are complemented by a selection of Keuco Plan Accessories – from hair dryers and waste bins to toilet
paper holders, spare roll holders, toilet
brush sets, and towel holders. Thanks to the Keuco shower shelf and shower wiper, the shower always remains
tidy and the shower glass free of drips.

The interplay of the products creates a calm,
clean aesthetic that corresponds to the architectural vision of the
microhouses. The uniform design, wood and high-quality workmanship create a
bathroom ambience that is both functional and relaxing.

The mlab.design holiday homes in the Eifel National

Villa is a serene retreat nestled on a plot of old-growth jungle in Bali.
Dreamed up by seasoned blogger Christian LeBlanc, the six-bedroom home
expresses his admiration for the island and unique journey in getting there.

“I started
off as an accountant, working nine-to-five,” Christian explains. “I felt a lack
of inspiration and creativity and needed an escape.” In search of the
extraordinary, he “picked up a GoPro, started traveling, and committed to making
a video every day.” Some years of jet setting later, Christian slowly settled
in Bali and drawn to the island’s breathtaking nature and inspiring energy,
decided to fulfill a lifelong dream of building his own home.

Christian’s
purchase of the Lost Villa site was equal parts luck and perseverance: “During
the pandemic, I rode around on my motorbike asking locals if they or their
families had land. After a few days, I found it: this wild jungle plot, which
is now this sanctuary with towering trees—some over 100 years old.” From there
on, Christian began a years-long process of developing the Lost Villa, piece by
piece, into an extraordinary residence. Naturally, Christian selected Axor for
the bathrooms of this deeply personal project.

Blue and
Green everywhere

Fittings from the MyEdition collection in brushed bronze

LeBlanc
collaborated with Romania-based Singleart Design & Architecture to create
an immersive design inspired by Bali’s rich nature and local craftsmanship.
“Everything is blue and green,” LeBlanc explains, from the infinity pool and
volcanic rock koi pond to a soaring treehouse and rooftop garden laden with
bougainvillea flowers. LeBlanc’s own neighbor, an expert craftsman, hand carved
doors, beams and shelving with wood sourced from decommissioned boats, docks
and bridges. A host of curated objects—handmade Jakarta carpets, bespoke coffee
tables by Singleart and mouth-blown pendant lights from Christian’s native
Toronto—rounds out the space.

Organic
fittings in a wild environment

The virtually invisible Starck V tap focuses attention on the element of water.

When
LeBlanc first discovered Axor, he was immediately inspired: “I thought, this is
Lost Villa. The designs felt like they grew out of the earth.” An ensemble of fixtures
throughout the home reflects his artful interpretation. In one corner, a
floor-standing Starck Organic bath thermostat services a monolithic stone
soaking tub; its sensuous shape echoing the lush greenery around it. In
another, guests can discover a secluded powder room, its emerald marble
displaying a faucet with the swirling vortex of Axor’s Starck V in Brushed
Bronze—“a collection that feels experimental, elegant, and totally aligned with
our space.”

Keen on
ensuring “every space has its own palette and story,” Christian called in the
services of FinishPlus to create matching finishes for each private bathroom’s
unique palette of stone. A master bathroom matches elegant Italian marble with
fixtures from the MyEdition collection shown in Brushed Bronze, finished with a
custom black walnut plate. A different bedroom’s bathroom pairs Iranian
platinum travertine with an Uno washbasin faucet and an Overhead Showers
arrangement in contrasting Brushed Black Chrome.

Bold colors meet clean lines and gentle curves. This contrast is reflected both
in the tile design and in the overall visual language of the space.

Photo: BLCN DESIGN, Buro Bonito

With
its eventful history, the port city of Ostend is certainly one of the most
important cities on the Belgian coast. With The Ostendian Hotel, the historic
city now has a new design hotspot that aims to combine the charm of bygone
times with contemporary design. The 113 rooms feature minimalist bathrooms and
sustainable materials.

Ostend
is a city full of contrasts: here, rugged charm meets classic elegance,
maritime down-to-earthness meets sophisticated flair, and artistic atmosphere
meets lively drive. And this is exactly where The Ostendian, located in the new
Sky District, wants to come in and combine nostalgia and modernity. The
holistic concept created by The Brand Guys was implemented by BLCN Design. The
aim was to capture the atmosphere of the 70s and 80s without falling into a
retro parody. Warm colours, gently curved lines and materials with retro charm
characterise the image from the entrance area to the hotel rooms and ensure a
high recognition value. Inspired by the classic Art Deco look, this lifestyle hotel playfully evokes the bathing culture of days gone by.

One concept – from the entrance hall to the bathroom

Inclusive comfort: The
accessible bathroom blends seamlessly into the overall concept. A spacious,
walk-in shower with a fold-down seat provides comfort, while grab bars ensure
safety. Warm color tones and the interplay of smooth and textured tiles create
a modern, welcoming atmosphere.

Photo: BLCN DESIGN, Buro Bonito

For special getaways, The Ostendian offers themed rooms, each of which opens up its own little world. The hotel collaborated with local artists to design the interiors. This is evident in the individually designed suites – such as the "Herr Seele Studio" with hand-painted murals by the cartoonist and artist of the same name. The "Red Light Suite", on the other hand, is a tongue-in-cheek reminder of Ostend's former red-light district, Hazegras. Another highlight is the "Record Suite", which invites guests to engage in spontaneous jam sessions with its own recording studio, electric guitar and keyboard. The regular rooms are also stylishly designed with great attention to detail. Red and pink tones meet bold yellow here. Behind the beds, rounded fabric panels add striking accents.

The bathrooms blend seamlessly into this aesthetic. Even the retreat is staged here. In all 113 bathrooms, clean lines, pleasant textures and functional elegance create the unmistakable Ostende style. Minimalist D-Neo toilets by Belgian designer Bertrand Lejoly, timeless washbasins from the DuraStyle series and Sustano shower trays made of recyclable DuroCast Nature by Duravit, as well as Madison, the grand dame of Dornbracht's fittings series, contribute to the hotel's unmistakable design signature. White and ochre-yellow tiles, wooden washbasins and tall arched mirrors revive the bathroom culture of the turn of the century. Different tile colours, attractive glossy surfaces and carefully coordinated materials ensure that each bathroom has its own unique style and stands out from the rest of the room.

The decision to use recyclable materials and particularly durable
ceramics is a statement for a future that shows that luxury and environmental
awareness do not have to be mutually exclusive.

holders firmly to the box and prevent splash water from penetrating. The escutcheons
are attached to the escutcheon holder without a single screw. The minimal
projection of the operating units leaves plenty of space for installing the
fittings, for example in narrow shower cubicles.

The
mounting rail is ideal for shell construction. It allows the box to be
perfectly positioned and easily aligned. Retaining rings on the boxes mean that
the Homebox can also be attached to partition walls. If the hot and cold water

does not sit in the wall at the required installation depth, this can be corrected
with the extension sets.

(VDS)

Differences in shades of white are a challenge when planning bathrooms. And although some shades of white have become something of a standard here, it is good to know what factors play a role in colour planning with white and why bathroom planners should work with original samples wherever possible. With Pantone's colour of the year for 2026, a special shade of white is currently coming into play: Cloud Dancer.

White is an indispensable colour in the bathroom: sanitary ceramics, mineral cast washbasins, walls, even tiles... white dominates the bathroom as far as the eye can see. Even white surfaces are en vogue for fittings. However, from a design perspective, this achromatic ‘non-colour’ (physically speaking, it is the result of adding all visible light colours) is highly sensitive: no other colour stands for purity and purism to such an extent; however, as every shade of white has a subtle colour nuance, differences between neighbouring shades of white can be particularly distracting. Small deviations in material white and light colour are enough to make the interior design appear restless, ‘dirty’ or cool and technical. For professional bathroom planners, it is a challenge to control white in a targeted manner – on surfaces, joints, sanitary objects, accessories and lighting. Now another shade of white is being added, the Pantone trend colour of the year 2026 PANTONE
11-4201 Cloud Dancer.

Cloud Dancer – Pantone Trend Colour 2026

Poto: Pantone

Pantone, a global colour expert and provider of professional colour standards and digital solutions for the design community, introduced PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer at the end of the year, a weightless white tone designed to convey a feeling of deep serenity. According to the colour expert, the delicate white shade is intended to symbolise calm in a hectic world that is rediscovering the value of mindfulness and quiet reflection. The colour specialist is well aware of the importance of this colour family for long-lasting interior design: Cloud Dancer is intended to convey a feeling of calm and relaxation, especially in the bathroom, while in the kitchen, the shade is designed to create an impression of openness and space. Unfortunately, no further information about colour nuances can be found in the press and marketing materials; when looking at the numerous examples, one can only guess at what the shade actually looks like. Professionals will therefore probably have to decide to purchase the sample cards.

Purist to ethereal: cosy all-white interiors for bathrooms are currently in vogue

Photo: FAR.consulting, Vereinigung Deutsche Sanitärwirtschaft e.V. (VDS)

No sooner does white seem to face serious competition as the dominant colour in bathrooms, ranging from neutral concrete greige to natural light beige, than it is rediscovered as a trend colour. The first impression of Pantone's colour of the year for 2026 is that Cloud Dancer could be a white with a tendency towards a beige tone and is intended for combinations with greige and grey tones. This would make it perfect for adding a cosy touch to the interior design of the bathroom. The fact that Pantone has chosen a shade of white as its colour of the year speaks for the topicality of the colour when used in an original way.

Trendy interior design concepts that seek to break down boundaries in rooms through low-contrast, emphatically matt tone-on-tone designs naturally also find a particularly suitable stage in the bathroom. A room designed in white-on-white or all-white is likely to have an almost ethereal effect – an idea that fits very well with the name ‘Cloud Dancer’ for Pantone's trend colour for 2026. However, it is questionable whether sanitaryware manufacturers will take up the colour expert's idea and offer sanitaryware products in matching shades. The new trend colour gives bathroom designers a new approach to trend-conscious planning, but no certainty. The uncertainties surrounding the major design theme of white therefore remain. The only certainty is that white will remain a strong base colour – with a new, trendy perspective.

White in the bathroom: opportunities and risks

Photo: FAR.consulting, Vereinigung Deutsche Sanitärwirtschaft e.V. (VDS)

There is, of course, a history behind the fact that white has dominated bathroom design since sanitary facilities were first installed in homes. Not only did white become a prestigious material with the introduction of sanitary ceramics in the late 19th century, but white also conveys hygiene, clarity and visual spaciousness. At the same time, the colour provides a neutral environment for personal hygiene and cosmetics. One might think that a basic colour present in various products and applications would make uniform design much easier. However, in highly reflective rooms such as bathrooms, even minimal colour variations are amplified; even slight nuances in tiles, ceramics or fronts stand out clearly in the overall picture.

For interior designers, this means that white is less a colour than a system of tones, degrees of gloss and lighting moods that must be planned consistently. If this system is neglected, the impression quickly shifts from ‘clear’ to ‘clinical’ or from “fresh” to ‘yellowed’.

Different shades of white from sanitaryware manufacturers

Photo: FAR.consulting, Vereinigung Deutsche Sanitärwirtschaft e.V. (VDS)

Every manufacturer seems to define its own ‘standard white’, which can range from cooler, bluish shades to warmer, cream-coloured nuances. Combining sanitary ceramics, tiles, furniture and ceiling paint from different brands without coordination results in visible discrepancies – such as greyish ceramics against light ivory-coloured wall tiles. Even within a manufacturer's product range, there may be different shades of white. As a rule, the shades of white within a manufacturer's range always match each other better and are precisely coordinated. A sanitary ceramic toilet and a matching toilet seat made of plastic (Duraplast) then look as if they were made from the same mould. Professional bathroom planners plan with these product combinations per se or, in the case of colour-sensitive products, fall back on manufacturer collections.

In practice, it helps to physically compare shades of white for each project rather than relying on sample cards in catalogues or images on screens. It makes sense to have a clear strategy, such as choosing a dominant basic white for all large surfaces, complemented by a maximum of one contrasting accent white (e.g. for furniture) with a recognisable, deliberate difference.

Current standard: sanitary white / alpine white

At Geberit, the toilet seat, sanitary ceramic toilet and flush plate are colour-coordinated to match each other perfectly.

Photo: Geberit

By far the most common colour is ‘Alpine White’ or ‘Sanitary White’; estimates suggest that this shade is used in the vast majority of white sanitary ware installed in Germany. Alpine white is a relatively neutral, slightly warm white that has been specially defined for bathrooms and is similar in appearance to common architectural white shades such as RAL 9010 or similar nuances. Some sanitaryware manufacturers also offer variants such as ‘glossy white’, ‘snow white’, “edelweiss” or ‘pure white’, all of which fall within this spectrum but differ slightly in brightness and temperature. Important for bathroom planners: the names are not standardised, so original samples from different brands should always be compared directly with each other.

Role of gloss level and materiality

Shades of white are currently in vogue and create space for structure and clarity in modern living environments.

Photo: Villeroy & Boch

The degree of gloss and surface structure influence the perception of white almost as much as the colour tone itself. High-gloss tiles reflect light in a concentrated manner and amplify colour temperature deviations, while matt surfaces make white appear softer and more homogeneous. The currently popular 3D tiles refract light and provide another source of error when evaluating a colour impression.

In the bathroom context, different materials also collide: glazed ceramics, lacquered fronts, solid surface materials, lime plaster, mirrors and glass. An identical NCS, Pantone or RAL value has a different effect on each of these substrates, which bathroom planners should take into account when sampling with 1:1 samples.

Light temperature of bathroom lighting

Adjustable light temperature: rl40 mirror cabinet by Burgbad

Photo: Burgbad

The light colour of luminaires is specified in Kelvin and typically ranges from warm white (approx. 2,700–3,300 K) to neutral white (approx. 3,300–5,300 K) to daylight white from approx. 5,300 K for white light sources. Warm white light tends towards yellow and quickly makes white surfaces appear creamy or slightly beige; neutral white and daylight white, on the other hand, emphasise cool, bluish tones.

Especially in the bathroom, where skin tones and the colour rendering of cosmetic products are important, neutral white in the range of approximately 3,500–4,500 K often appears more balanced than extremely warm or cool white. Light that is too cool can make the room appear ‘hygienically bright,’ but at the same time uncomfortable and unflattering for the mirror area.

Lighting design in the bathroom: daylight and mixed light

Targeted lighting design in the bathroom: coordinated light temperatures and flexible control instead of universal lighting.

Photo: Duravit

Natural daylight changes its colour temperature significantly depending on the time of day and weather conditions: in the morning and evening, warmer, reddish tones around 3,000 K predominate, while the midday sun reaches values of around 5,500 K and above. A clear blue sky can even produce higher, very cool light temperatures, which make white appear significantly bluer.

In bathrooms, mixed light from daylight and artificial light is almost always present, which constantly changes the effect of white surfaces. Planners should therefore not rely solely on a ‘universal’ luminaire, but should specifically control the lighting atmosphere with coordinated colour temperatures, dimmable or tunable white systems and differentiated switching.

Design strategies for professionals

Photo: Pantone

Define a uniform white base: Set a main white (tiles/walls) as a reference and explicitly check all other elements – ceramics, furniture, joints, ceiling – against it.

Conscious contrasts instead of random nuances: If different shades of white are unavoidable, they should be clearly differentiated (e.g. warm off-white for furniture with cooler, clear wall white) instead of varying only minimally.

Think integratively when planning lighting: for functional lighting above the mirror, use a neutral white in the range of approx. 3,500–4,500 K, and provide warmer zones for ambient lighting. Some mirrors and mirror cabinets also offer light temperature control, which allows for more flexibility in bathroom planning when it comes to colour design.

Check your plans in real light: view sample surfaces not only in the showroom, but also on site in real daylight and with artificial lighting switched on in order to reliably assess the effect of white and light.

The colour white is essential in the bathroom

With this approach, white in the bathroom transforms from a risky colour into a deliberately controlled design tool that combines brands, materials and light to create a professional overall experience. PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer could play an important role in bathroom wall and floor design as a first step. ‘With the Colour of the Year 2026, Pantone wants to focus on the symbolic emptiness of the canvas that Cloud Dancer embodies,’ according to Pantone's marketing message. For precise bathroom planning, it is always advisable to coordinate colours for specific objects: the series name and exact ceramic colour of the manufacturer should be documented and all adjacent white tones (walls, furniture, bathtubs, radiators) should be visually checked against it.

bathroom becomes a cosy bathroom with a feel-good factor. Why shouldn't every
area of the bathroom have a cosy atmosphere – including the shower area?
Cosiness, well-being and technical finesse do not have to be mutually
exclusive. At least, that is what Hansgrohe's Raindance Alive aims to convey.

According to
Hansgrohe, the combination of RainAir and PowderRain alone creates a unique
shower experience that combines relaxation and refreshment. The innovative mesh
design of the spray disc made of anodised aluminium gives the showers an
additional homely aesthetic. And the geometrically designed thermostat with its
ultra-flat construction creates the impression that it blends into the wall and
looks like a flush-mounted module.

Surface-mounted thermostat
in slim format

Thanks to its extremely flat design, the Raindance Alive surface-mounted thermostat looks like a flush-mounted module.

Photo: Hansgrohe SE

Although the
Raindance Alive showerpipes technically have a normal surface-mounted
thermostat, they give the impression that the product merges with the wall.
This effect is made possible by the geometric thermostat with its high-quality
brass base and zinc coating. In addition, the shower rail with aluminum profile
continues in straight line to emphasize this effect. Without having to replace
the entire tiling, Raindance Alive is designed to achieve the visual appeal of
flush-mounted modules – making it ideal for bathroom renovations.

Shower head in mesh design

With its invisible jets and mesh design, the shower head aims to bring a touch of cosiness to the shower area.

Photo: Hansgrohe SE

Particular attention
was paid to the design of the showers. The new mesh design made of anodized
aluminum, which almost looks like fabric, gives Raindance Alive overhead
showers a more homogeneous and less technical appearance. The aim was to create
a structure that forms an open, soft surface from which water droplets emerge
organically. This is why the nozzles are no longer visible, but have been
concealed by the design surface. This look is intended to make the shower area
appear more homely.

Water saving included on request

Optionally equipped
with EcoSmart water-saving technology, Raindance Alive reduces water
consumption and thus saves energy costs. Raindance Alive EcoSmart showers offer
potential savings of around 40%. These figures are based on a comparison with a
conventional Hansgrohe shower without EcoSmart and are made possible by a flow
limiter in the shower. Raindance Alive enriches Hansgrohe's Raindance series
with a refreshing design language, numerous additional configuration options
and six different FinishPlus surfaces.

located on a historic site in Amsterdam's canal belt. With carefully designed
interiors and discreet luxury, The Dylan offers a stylish retreat in the heart
of the vibrant city centre. Dornbracht's
Tara fittings emphasise the architectural signature in the bathrooms of the
rooms and suites.

Located on the Keizersgracht in the heart of the "9 Straatjes"
district, the 5-star boutique hotel is in the immediate vicinity of numerous
boutiques, galleries and cafés in a location of historical significance: One of the most influential and important
theatres in the Netherlands was opened here in 1638. For almost two centuries,
the so-called “Schouwburg” was
the cultural heart and entertainment centre of the city. After a devastating
fire, the magnificent building was replaced in the 18th century by a building
with classic Amsterdam canal architecture. Only the imposing stone gate is a
reminder of the legendary theatre of yesteryear - and today it welcomes guests
to the boutique hotel.

Careful

suites, each designed in a distinct style. Those located in the “Serendipity”
building were renewed in 2024 as part of an extensive renovation. Studio Linse
was responsible for the redesign of these areas as well as the public spaces. “Creating
something new in a historic building from the Dutch Golden Age is not something
you take lightly,” says Paul Linse about the challenges of the project. “But my
design team and I ended up doing what we value most: creating an atmosphere of
timelessness that respects the past and welcomes the present.”

Historic substance and modern minimalism

The bathrooms in the suites at The Dylan Amsterdam are airy and clearly designed. characterised by a skilful interplay of historical substance and modern
minimalism. In the brasserie “Occo”, for example, there are customised velvet
sofas and quartzite tables with subtle textures. The leafy inner courtyard is
also reflected in the lush mirrored surfaces, lending the room brightness and
spaciousness. In the “Vinkeles” restaurant, a grey velvet curtain refers to the
famous theatre that once stood here. The same attention to detail is also
evident in the rooms and suites. The lofts in the gable of the historic building are among the
most striking: With their steep staircases and sharp angles, they are typical
of the architecture of their time, with the 17th century wooden beams in particular
emphasising the age of the building. They are complemented by minimalist
furnishings in beige and black, creating a warm, intimate ambience.

Fittings emphasise bathroom design

In the loft bathrooms, wood and quartzite meet light-coloured floors and walls. design in common: Visible roof beams, some with old inscriptions, white walls
and light-coloured floors create an atmosphere of lightness and clarity.
Depending on the room or suite, the bathrooms unfold differently – sometimes in
a compact design, sometimes as an open structure that flows seamlessly into the
sleeping area. Tara from Dornbracht is used in all variants, for example as a free-standing
bath mixer or in combination with wooden and quartzite washbasins. The matt
finish in Brushed Platinum sets subtle accents and lends the rooms an
understated elegance.

internationally renowned designer Patricia Urquiola has designed her first
bathroom range for Duravit: Architectural shapes and clear lines
create an aesthetic that simultaneously radiates warmth and accessibility. The Balcoon ceramics, bathroom furniture, bathtubs and
faucets create a combination of modernity, timeless elegance and minimalism. In this interview, Patricia Urquiola talks about the
bathroom series, her work and her approach to this project.

Ms. Urquiola, how did the
bathroom range come about?

The
Balcoon bathroom range is not a high-end project, but rather the result of an
intensive exploration around a product in the medium price segment. Duravit had
a gap in its portfolio at this price point and asked me for a design that
stands out from the crowd. They wanted a simple, quick project with a clear and
direct design language – while simultaneously lending a degree of dignity and
recognition value to the medium segment.

What approach did you take?

I
started with two essential forms: a cubic base and a cylindrical basin. These
two very pure geometries form the basis of the project. We then incorporated
some offsets, extended the form, and played with perspectives to create an
architecture that is still compatible with an affordable price point. All
elements are based on this double geometry. While the volume of the objects is
strictly controlled, but there is a degree of leeway with the proportions.

You inject some color into the bathroom…

Yes,
this was a deliberate departure from the minimalistic aesthetic of pure White
or Black. Our aim was to use
clay as a material to create a kind of canvas that lends the sanitary objects
more depth. The new ceramic color Clay
Terra Matt is a true innovation within the range – inspired by traditional
craftsmanship, it is central to the overall design. The earthy terracotta shade and the nature-inspired color
scheme of the bathroom furniture, with nuances of White, earthy shades of
Brown, and Anthracite, herald a new openness to color in the bathroom.

Balcoon is a highly
architectural project – the furniture is primed to interact with other design
elements…

The
furniture elements have a modular structure. The concept includes both open and
closed elements – a versatile design that can be adapted to a wide range of
room concepts and design approaches. While vanity units in the medium price
segment are usually simple cuboids, Balcoon bucks this trend. The design
language and the harmonious colors would also be a perfect match for other
living areas.

What
do you love most about your work?

When I’m working on a new project, I dive into
people’s habits and lives – that’s what design is about and I like that about
my job. I’m a big fan of hybridization, transformation, and improving things
that already exist. It takes courage to redesign things and think differently.
I love materials and am constantly rethinking them. Today, working with 3D
printing can optimize material waste, but I love ceramic and that ancient side
of things just as much... Instead of searching for the perfect line, purity for
me is perceiving design as a cycle. Time works on materials and on me... and I
work with time.

Information about the Balcoon collection you can find here.

timeless elegance and purism are combined in some of today's design collections
in the lifestyle segment of upmarket bathrooms. With the Balcoon bathroom
series by Patricia Urquiola, Duravit now wants to make this design feeling
accessible to a broad public in a medium price segment.

The
objects in the range combine simple geometric forms with clear lines, creating
a pared-down, timeless aesthetic that simultaneously exudes warmth and
accessibility. “The design plays with differences in height, projections and
the overlapping of materials and textures, from which the name 'Balcoon' is
derived,” explains Patricia Urquiola.

Form, colour and material of an architectural collection

By

countertop washbasins, which appear to float above the washbasin, are a
particular eye-catcher. The designer has placed the round and oval basins on a
square plinth. Playing with two different levels in this way is a constant
across the entire collection – from the wall-mounted washbasins through the
toilets and bidets right up to the furniture elements and bathtubs.

Patricia
Urquiola created an earthy terracotta shade for the Balcoon ceramic objects
that brings their tactile and material qualities to the fore. “Clay Terra Matt
is the central color of the new collection. A shade that makes the ceramics
look even more authentic and handmade,” says the designer.

This
is also the basis of the nature-inspired color scheme for the bathroom
furniture, giving rise to unique combinations that flow from white to earthy
brown shades and anthracite. Textured furniture finishes set playful accents.
The mineral consoles available in three color shades are yet another way of adding
even more depth and authenticity to the furniture.

Everyday furniture with an aesthetic flourish

The compact washbasin combines a black console with a substructure and top-mounted basin in the earthy terracotta colour Clay Terra Matt - the grooved structure is intended to create a playful effect.

Photo: Duravit

The

of drawers and open shelves. The visual tension of the furniture elements is
further reinforced by the combination of contrasting colors.

The
designer opted for plain décors in a range of color gradations the finishes as
standard for the medium price segment. “The furniture is given a very special
upgrade with consoles in a sophisticated terrazzo look and ribbed furniture
fronts,” says Patricia Urquiola.

Design down to the smallest detail

The oval, raised bath rim rests on a seamless acrylic panel that extends into the corners.

Photo: Duravit

The cylindrical handle merges into the body of the mixer tap in a gentle curve. The wall-hung washbasin offers a clear separation of wet and dry areas with practical storage space on the tap hole bench.

Photo: Duravit
