Looking For an iPhone Alternative

My iPhone is now officially fried. I can no longer charge it to its full capacity. I don’t know what happened but it’s been giving me fits. And since I don’t usually linger on a problematic thing, I’ve decided to move on.

There’s an ongoing ‘bitter’ discussion over at gigaom.com on a review he made on the about to be released (to asia at least) Nokia N900 citing it as inferior to iPhone. I got a Finnish officemate who’s gotten his pre-ordered N900 already though he still can’t get his grubby fingers on it as he’s here in the islands and his new N900 phone is waiting for him at his home in Finland. To call him a Nokia fanboy would be just about right, considering that he used for the phone giant before.

Anyway, the Nokia N900 is one of the things that I’m looking at to replace my iPhone. It’s just too bad that it’s not coming out anytime soon here in the Philippines. I was actually in the mall yesterday and looked at some of the Nokia phones on display in the mobile phone stores. Some of the Nokia models look great though there were a few criticisms when I read their reviews. Oh well you can’t get a perfect phone anyway, just look at the iPhone.

As of now, here’s my shortlist of iPhone alternatives. After the incident with my iPhone battery, I think I’m going with a smartphone model that will allow me to change batteries whenever it’s fried. Something that unfortunately I can’t do with the iPhone.

Reengineering My Sports Blog

I’m getting bored with my boxing site; bored enough that I’m even thinking of closing it. But since I just renewed its domain name I thought that I might as well make it more interesting, for me at least. Hence I’ve decided to included additional sports stories that interests me.

Actually this is not a novel idea, my friend over at ceblogger.com turned a new leaf this year with that in mind as well and he seemed to really enjoy it. I’m taking a leaf out of his strategy notebook and completely turn this blog on its head.

Just the thought of writing other sports stories makes me really excited.

Watch UFC 104 featuring Machida vs Shogun live online October 24, 2009 starting at 4:30 PM PST. The Dragon Lyodo Machidagoes against the man known as Shogun, Maurico Rua– conqueror of Chuck Lidell and Mark Coleman.

If I’m a betting man, I will have to go for Machida on this one. He doesn’t take unnecessary risks and is very consistent so far. Mauricio will do well playing his own game and take Lyodo off his rhythm. If he can do that, then he could go home with the belt. So who do you think will win?

Optimizing Live Events

Another rich source of web traffic, if you don’t know this yet, are live internet events. However, before I go into this, most ‘free’ live internet events are, how do I say this, not exactly legal, if you know what I mean. These live events are usually pay per view, which means that you should only be able to watch these things live over the internet unless you pay for them.

However, some folks would rather have you watching these events for free. They do this by opening up a channel somewhere in the internet and broadcast these events live by connecting their TV sets to the net or to they could also do so through directly from their computers. Of course these guys had to pay for the show otherwise they won’t get the live feed.

The cost for purchasing these events are easily recouped once people log into their sites to watch. There are a variety of methods that they make money off these viewers to get back their ‘initial investment’, chief among them is the impressions they get on the CPM ads they have on their sites.

Now as a website owner or administrator, you can take advantage of this by going to those sites who offer live broadcasts. Most of the time there are embed codes that are offered there for you to paste on your site. All you have to do is to get those codes and then optimize your posts so that they get very good rankings. Once you get into the page one of Google for the event, expect visitors to start rolling into your site.

You should know however that this is propagating illegal feeds, but if you are ok with that, then go ahead, knock yourself out.

Are You Using Google Analytics?

You can probably rationalize and say that it’s just a tool to monitor your traffic anyway and there are other things so much simpler than that. That may be true in a sense but if you’re really serious about your blogging, then you’re missing the world if you are not using Google Analytics. Let me tell you why.

For one it’s free, as in totally free. Some other stat-measuring websites offer premium packages for their products. This is not the case with Google Analytics.

Then there’s all the bells and whistles that you just can’t find in one single other product and Google is even enhancing it every chance they get. Just now, a whole new set of Google Analytics features have come out like Engagement Goals, Expanded Mobile Reporting, etc.. that it makes you wonder why this is free. But this is Google we’re talking about here which means they can afford it and then some.

But what I really like best about this Analytics tool is that it lets you track the keywords that your visitor use to get to your site. This one is very, very useful if you want to increase your site’s traffic because it gives you an idea of what people are searching for. You can also target those powerful long tail keywords and build entries around them.

Simply put, if you want progress in your blogging, then you simply cannot ignore Google Analytics. For a blogger, you should consider this tool as one of your best buddies.

I’m not talking about taking the October 2009 CPA Board Exams again. Or the results of that exams. I’m actually gearing up for the SEO competition that this keyword brings. If you search for this keyword now, a lot of those websites in Google’s page one are very familiar names. Let’s see if I can join the fray in the next couple of weeks.

Joining informal SEO battles like this is one of the things that gets me really excited. Yep, more than playing the usual Playstation games. I can’t say I’m already an expert on this game although I’ve had my moments. Last May, I totally dominated the CPA BOARD EXAMS keyword although I kinda expected that much knowing the efforts I put into it.

Unfortunately, this keyword sucks ass in terms of adsense returns. lol. But as they say, it’s not about the money. Not always anyway.

I also participated in the june 2009 nursing board exams seo madness. That one brought home a couple of bucks here and there although I wasn’t as dominant as I would have liked, guys like Jehzlau (hi Jehz, you don’t really know me but hi anyway, lol) and Bloggista are the big daddies when it comes to that keyword.

The good thing about dipping my chubby little fingers in this kind of activity is that I learn a lot. I experimented with various things, got great results, sometimes I also got burned. But the key thing is I learned. And that’s the cool thing right there.

And the guy that I actually learned from the most? Bloggista! lol. I have a mind to think that that guy is the blogging devil himself! Hahaha. I didn’t ask questions, I just analyzed like hell what he does with his blogs and oh boy if you can only see the things I’ve discovered. He’s devious I’m telling ya, devious!

Anyway, this has gotten long enough. To gear up for this month’s SEO competition, I’m gonna have to apply all my learnings, bare my fangs and see if I can bite a huge chunk off that $20 Adsense value that the October 2009 CPA Board Exam Results brings with it. :)

Latest Alexa Ranking Update

September was an awesome month for my blogs in terms of Alexa Ranking. My four main blogs have gained significant ranking upgrades and one even managed to break the 100K barrier. These things did not happen by accident. It took some careful analysis of what works and executing them. I practiced what I preached and got a huge satisfaction in seeing them confirmed.

Here are the four sites I mentioned.

Philippines Travel Blog – From 120K in early September to 98K as of this writing.

Third World Geek – From 140K to 111K

Mercenary Blogger – From 700K to 177K – awesome jump!

The Puncher’s Chance – From 1.4M to 337K

As for earnings this month, compared to the other big earners out there, my revenues this month is not even worth mentioning. But for my friend who works as an accountant in a huge local bank, I’m pretty sure he’d be pretty upset when he learns how much I made. lol. By the way, I’m not just talking about adsense money. And yes my Alexa Ranking had a lot to do with it.

I was browsing the web looking for Farmville game cheats when I came across CHEAT ENGINE. Apparently cheat engine is an open source tool that helps those game developers or game mods to modify games to either make them harder or easier depending on their preferences. On top of that it also has a lot of other useful tools to aid developers in debugging games and even normal applications.
