Wow, I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's finally time for me to jump onto the creativeLIVE set and teach a 3-day workshop to anyone who wants to watch...I was inspired to do this thanks to the most wonderful woman I met from Nigeria, who reminded me that not everyone around the world can take workshops and travel, and told me that I should give back. So, I've planned so much for the next 3 days and I can't wait to share my passion with you.

I've visted this tree an absurd number of times, waiting, watching, and staring at this lone wonder. In a freshly-planted wheat field, I stood watching as the sun set over the coastal range to the west, illuminating "my" tree and making a long shadow that appeared on the rolling hills to the east. It is moments like these that make the effort completely justified.

This is a panorama image from almost a year ago. We've had such a dry winter that I'm curious about what this spring will be like...

finally. feels like i've been walking around with a welding mask on when the sun finally comes out after 2 weeks. the weather report hinted at this scene the previous evening so i set the alarm for 3:40 to be onsite at 4:30 then had to beat a retreat to get to my first job by 8:00. i've been trying to photo clouds like these, well everytime i turn my camera on. definitely worth getting up for. thanks for looking and thanks for any comments or critiques. have a nice day from Maine, Usa.

We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You'll make it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
It's time that you won

This is 4 exposures blended together using my advanced Photoshop tonality control and multiple exposure blending techniques. I produced a video detailing these techniques, it's available here: www.zschnepf.com

I just got back from a 2 week vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii. I wish I could have stayed forever, I love Hawaii. This is a very special location for me, I lived on the Big Island when I was a kid and I used to swim in the tide pools here. My family and friends would watch the sunset while we soaked in the ocean. That's exactly what I did on this night, I soaked in the waves as they ebbed and flowed wearing just a pair of shorts and capturing the action. Aloha Hawaii, till next time :)

Puppet Labs, a leading provider of IT automation software, today announced Puppet Application Orchestration, which helps organizations orchestrate the deployment and management of infrastructure and applications while enabling customers to model complicated applications and application stacks as Puppet code.

“Over the past several years, Puppet’s model-based approach has become the standard for modern infrastructure management," said Luke Kanies, founder and CEO of Puppet Labs. "Puppet Application Orchestration is a direct extension of our existing strengths and technologies, adding new tools and capabilities that give our customers a full management stack, from bare metal all the way up to modern distributed applications."

This makes sure that your class behaves correctly independent on how it is used. Take for example the field fieldAccessor in the class java.lang.reflect.Field.

Tuesday, at the end of my 5-hour crash course on machine learning for actuaries, Pierre asked me an interesting question about computational time of different techniques. I’ve been presenting the philosophy of various algorithm, but I forgot to mention computational time. I wanted to try several classification algorithms on the dataset used to illustrate the techniques

> rm(list=ls())
> myocarde=read.table(
"http://freakonometrics.free.fr/myocarde.csv",
head=TRUE,sep=";")
> levels(myocarde$PRONO)=c("Death","Survival")

But the dataset is rather small, with 71 observations and 7 explanatory variables. So I decided to replicate the observations, and to add some covariates,

A Database Platform for the Internet of Things

The history of computing is punctuated by periods of disruptive innovation that play havoc with the technology landscape.

For a while database technology seemed immune to this kind of disruption, but by about 2004 it began to stumble – long before the explosion of smart phones and tablets. CPUs became multicore, enabling new approaches to scaling out databases across large grids of servers. At the same time, the Internet was producing larger collections of data than had ever been amassed before. It began, of course, with Yahoo! and Google but quickly blossomed out to what we now call social media (LinkedIn, MySpace, Facebook, etc.) and the rapidly expanding industry of multiplayer games, where data on the activity of millions of individual game players was being collected and analyzed. The traditional databases were no longer so widely applicable, and in some areas they were utterly inadequate.

And, also meetings.

However, the road to improvement through this complex situation can be a strange one.

This is supposed to be my vJBUG topic, it's about better tooling which saves you valuable time when developing! During the talk, I developed a JBoss Fuse Application using the latest tooling available in JBoss Fuse! Here's what I go over:

How to debug Camel applications.

Data mapping between POJO and XML, JSON with Dozer with drag and drops only.

Deploying and packaging an OSGi ready Applications.

Before the demo, here are some basics. This video goes through and tells you all about the tools available for JBoss Fuse.

Proactive Monitoring in the Digital Experience Age

Tremendous shifts are happening in the way customers are interacting with brands. Customers are making the choice of digital interaction over brick-and-mortar visits for more and more services. For the most part, that interaction continues across different screens — tablets, laptops, smartphone and smart watches. This is a story that many businesses can tell, be it the banking industry, the airline industry, or even horse betting. Enterprises are striving to deliver innovative digital strategies offering that right balance of delight and utility. As digital experiences emerge as the primary brand engagement point, IT teams are quickly realizing different strategies are required to ensure the quality of the brand experience.

Naturally, this shift is a significant enabler for new business opportunities. One great example is Starbucks Mobile Order & Pay; time-challenged customers using the app can grab and go. The result? More customers served, higher same-store profit.

In a previous post we learned how to pass Java system properties from the command-line to a Java process defined in a Gradle build file. Because Grails 3 uses Gradle as the build tool we can apply the same mechanism in our Grails application. We need to reconfigure the
run
task. This task is of type
JavaExec
and we can use the method
systemProperties
to assign the system properties we define on the command-line when we invoke the
run
task.

We have a simple Grails 3 application with the following controller that tries to access the Java system property
sample.message
:

Ratpacked: Use Asynchronous Logging

Ratpack is from the ground up build to be performant and asynchronous. Let's add a logging implementation that matches the asynchronous nature of Ratpack. Ratpack uses the SLF4J API for logging and if we write logging statement in our own code we should use the same API. For Groovy developers it is nothing more than adding the
@Slf4j
AST annotation to our classes. The Logback library has an asynchronous appender which has a queue to store incoming logging events. Then a worker on a different thread will invoke a classic blocking appender, like a file or console appender, to actually log the messages. But in our example we don't use the standard async appender from Logback, but use a asynchronous logbook appender from the Reactor project. Now our queue is backed by a very performant reactor ring buffer implementation.

The following Logback configuration file shows how we can configure the
reactor.logback.AsyncAppender
:

In this post I will focus on how to factor out reusable parts of an architecture into separate files that can best be described as architectural templates. We will also cover the restriction of dependencies by dependency types.

Creating Architectural Templates

Let us assume we want to use a predefined layering for several modules of our software system. Without a template mechanism we would have to write something like that:

Microservices-Washing: Get to the Value, Strip Away the Hype

Somebody call the buzzword police: we have a serious case of microservices-washing in progress. The term "microservices-washing" is derived from "whitewashing," meaning to hide some inconvenient truth with bluster and nonsense.

We saw plenty of cloudwashing a few years ago, as vendors and enterprises alike pretended what they were doing was cloud, even though it wasn't. Today, the hype around microservices has led to the same kind of obfuscation, as vendors and enterprise technologists alike are saying they're building microservices—even though a cursory look at what they're really up to wouldn't uncover a single one.

APIs—specifically streaming APIs—enable the IoT vision to become reality. The addition of a real-time streaming proxy and an API management solution addresses some of the unique challenges of these streaming APIs and makes a great combination for any IoT-based enterprise.

Why streaming APIs for IoT? Some of the so-far-so-good Web technologies in use to support the IoT are quickly becoming too inefficient. The reason? Most of them use HTTP as the protocol transport. By definition HTTP is half-duplex and can only deliver full duplex, real-time communications such as the ones required to monitor real world events at the cost of a higher latency and increased network traffic.

Regular readers know why I want a branching model for a non-development purpose and with merge directions like so:

This article isn’t about that as such, but is about the merge capabilities of Subversion 1.9.2. Take just the bottom-right of that diagram
/baz/UAT
and
/baz/PROD
. I want to merge back and forth between the two. Say ‘baz’ is a person, and I’ve launched a UAT and PROD environment for them. There’s only one file within, and for our purposes I’ve called it testfile.txt.

PostgreSQL has a great feature called Foreign Data Wrappers (FDW) that allows it to connect directly to outside systems. Although the setup can be a little complicated, once it’s available you can run queries with joins or subqueries against them, insert data, create views, etc. Heroku has dramatically simplified the process of using FDW with PostgreSQL and Redis thanks to Data Links.
Clustering Jenkins with Kubernetes in the Google Container Engine

While we’ve already discussed how to use the Google Container Engine to host elastic Jenkins slaves, it is also possible to host the master itself in the Google Container Engine. Architecting Jenkins in this way lets Jenkins installations run more frictionlessly and reduces an administrator’s burden by taking advantage of the Google Container Engine’s container scheduling, health-checking, resource labeling, and automated resource management. Other administrative tasks, like container logging, can also be handled by the Container Engine and the Container Engine itself is a hosted service.

What is Kubernetes and the Google Container Engine?

Kubernetes is an open-source project by Google which provides a platform for managing Docker containers as a cluster. Like Jenkins, Kubernetes’ orchestrating and primary node is known as the “master”, while the node which hosts the Docker containers is called a “minion.” “Pods” host containers/services should on the minions and are defined as JSON pod files.

More on MiniDumper: Getting the Right Memory Pages for .NET Analysis

In my previous post on MiniDumper, I promised to explain in more detail how it figures out which memory ranges are required for .NET heap analysis. This is an interesting story, actually, because I tried a couple of approaches that failed before coming up with the final idea. Basically, I knew that a dump with full memory contains way more information than is necessary for .NET dump analysis. Even if you need the entire .NET heap available, you typically don’t need a bunch of other memory ranges: executable code, Win32 heaps, unused regions of thread stacks, and so much more.

My first attempt was to filter the memory ranges that are put in the dump by using a VM range callback with theMiniDumpWriteDump method. With this approach, every memory range that’s being written into the dump is first passed to the callback, which gets a chance to filter it out. So I figured I can filter out executable code (modules), Win32 heaps, anything really that’s not part of the .NET heap—and I could get the extent of the .NET heap and other necessary CLR heap regions by using the ClrMD API, notablyClrRuntime.EnumerateMemoryRegions.

In iOS 9, Apple introduced a new means of implementing automatic layout management (or "autolayout") in iOS applications: the UIStackView class. This
UIView
subclass arranges its subviews in either a horizontal or vertical line, optionally resizing or redistributing them as needed in response to device size or orientation changes.

In earlier versions of iOS, view layout had to be performed either manually or via layout constraints, neither of which was particularly convenient.
UIStackView
significantly simplifies this process. Internally, it uses layout constraints to manage views' size and position, hiding the details of constraint management and absolving developers of the responsibility of working with them directly.

Integrating Swagger With Hippo CMS RESTful Resources

The decoupling of content and presentation in Hippo CMS matches the present trend away from server-side html compilation to separate client and server codebases. The speed of development in this model depends heavily on the ease of integration with backend services. Frontend developers, whether internal or third-party, need up-to-date documentation and simple mechanisms for testing APIs.

Swagger has emerged as a de facto standard for documenting RESTful services. It makes API documentation part of the codebase rather than a separate (and thus often neglected) sibling. In addition, it is easy to present and test using Swagger UI. In this post we’ll show how simple it is to integrate Swagger into your Hippo CMS RESTful resources to make your content easy to find and consume.

For the last decade, as broadband Internet has proliferated and increased in speed, there has been a steady march toward storing data online ("in the cloud") both as consumers and businesses. Now, even more than data, entire applications are being delivered on demand, via the cloud. For the most part, it's sparked a revolution in mobile computing and in document collaboration. Now, hard drives can be small and very fast; documents can be worked on collaboratively in real-time from multiple locations; cloud applications are always up to date; and our music and photos are accessible wherever we are.

With the introduction of the latest iPhone and iPad operating system, iOS 9, Apple - who prides themselves on being a "total solution" for the consumer and prosumer - is strongly encouraging their customers to take another step towards fully trusting the cloud.

As Mystery Science Theater 2000 says, “If you’re wondering how he eats and breathes, and other science facts, just repeat to yourself ‘It’s just a show, I should really just relax’.” Realism does not always have room within the realm of fiction, yet often I see many indie devs strive to make their game “realistic.” Bullet drop, dynamic weather, understated physics. After all, “gritty, dark, and realistic” is the new trend these days, it is only natural that these themes gain popularity and traction. Despite this, if we look to the reasons behind the success of gritty reboots and realistic near-simulators, we can also find the key to making fantastical and whimsical games as well.

Realism Can Work Against the Game

I just came across an interesting article in The Conversation by Robert Merkel on Australia’s brand new PM, Malcolm Turnbull. Like many, I had not heard of Mr. Turnbull till about a week ago but it turns out that he had a very successful business career in a number of fields, most notably in the IT industry where he was a key early investor and board chairman of Australia’s first large commercial internet service provider, OzEmail. His 1994 investment of A$500,000 reportedly made him A$60 million when sold five years later.

His investment in IT and other technology-based start-ups continued throughout the 2000s, only ending in 2012. Even after this, his involvement with the IT industry continued, as first the shadow Communications Minister and then the Communications Minister under Tony Abbott. Very few senior politicians anywhere in the world have had anything like the breadth of professional experience in these fields that Turnbull has.

Over the past few months, we’ve been reaching out to users, doing user testing, and compiling a collection of the most complex traces Traceview has encountered to date. What have we found? Unsurprisingly, our customers’ apps (and ecologies thereof) continue to grow more sophisticated, distributed, and asynchronous.

We’re obviously excited about this trend, as instrumenting and visualizing complex, full-stack traces is our bread-and-butter. To make exploration of your most complex traces even easier, we’ve poured blood-sweat-and-coffee into to a slick new visualizer that lets you explore even your gnarliest multi-app traces all in one place.

Persistence in CQRS Read Models

One of the biggest benefits of CQRS is the ability to implement multiple read models. Business rules and the domain model are safe, clean and isolated over in the write model. They are not getting in the way of view models, which can selectively pick the pieces they are interested in, freely reshape them, and do everything in a way that needs different kind of elegance and clarity as the domain model. The read models are all about query performance and convenience.

Put simply, CQRS is a practical implementation of what Pat Helland described in his paper on immutability: The truth is the log. The database is a cache of a subset of the log. Let’s have a look at some consequences of this approach.

Infinispan local caches have several features that make it more than just a map—expiration and eviction, listeners, statistics, transactions, cache stores, and so forth. However, this comes at a price—due to all the hooks and object allocation, plain
ConcurrentHashMap
is faster than local cache.

There are applications that need something in between—great performance but some of those features, too. In our case, the motivation were internal caches in Hibernate Second Level Cache. Therefore Infinispan 8.0.1.Final brings the simple cache —alternative implementation of the
AdvancedCache
interface optimized for maximum performance when you need just the basics.
