Haarlem is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Holland and it is located fairly close to Amsterdam. The New York City borough 'Harlem' is named after this city.

I've visted this tree an absurd number of times, waiting, watching, and staring at this lone wonder. In a freshly-planted wheat field, I stood watching as the sun set over the coastal range to the west, illuminating "my" tree and making a long shadow that appeared on the rolling hills to the east. It is moments like these that make the effort completely justified.

This is a panorama image from almost a year ago. We've had such a dry winter that I'm curious about what this spring will be like...

finally. feels like i've been walking around with a welding mask on when the sun finally comes out after 2 weeks. the weather report hinted at this scene the previous evening so i set the alarm for 3:40 to be onsite at 4:30 then had to beat a retreat to get to my first job by 8:00. i've been trying to photo clouds like these, well everytime i turn my camera on. definitely worth getting up for. thanks for looking and thanks for any comments or critiques. have a nice day from Maine, Usa.

I just got back from a 2 week vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii. I wish I could have stayed forever, I love Hawaii. This is a very special location for me, I lived on the Big Island when I was a kid and I used to swim in the tide pools here. My family and friends would watch the sunset while we soaked in the ocean. That's exactly what I did on this night, I soaked in the waves as they ebbed and flowed wearing just a pair of shorts and capturing the action. Aloha Hawaii, till next time :)

This spectacular solo mangrove tree accompanied by a few rocks is the perfect recipe for that 'Zen' feeling. Sam, Dave, Kim & myself spent the morning in awe of this little beauty. The tide came in faster than anticipated & we had no option other than to leave or risk getting swamped & potentially drowning our cameras.

Happiness is a mental state of well-being characterized by positive emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy. It doesn't hurt to feel it once in a while :)

ChromaTouch: A 3D Touch Color Picker in Swift

If you're fairly new to Swift, you may have found my last post on 3D Touch a little daunting. Here's a much smaller project that may be a little easier to follow to get up and running with force, peek, pop and preview actions.

ChromaTouch is an HSL-based color picker where the user can set the color with three horizontal sliders or by touching over a colur swatch where horizontal movement sets hue, vertical set saturation and the force of the touch sets the lightness of the color. As the user moves their finger over the swatch, the sliders update to reflect the new HSL values.

In a previous post we learned how to pass Java system properties from the command-line to a Java process defined in a Gradle build file. Because Grails 3 uses Gradle as the build tool we can apply the same mechanism in our Grails application. We need to reconfigure the run task. This task is of typeJavaExec and we can use the method systemProperties to assign the system properties we define on the command-line when we invoke the runtask.

Ratpacked: Use Asynchronous Logging

Ratpack is from the ground up build to be performant and asynchronous. Let's add a logging implementation that matches the asynchronous nature of Ratpack. Ratpack uses the SLF4J API for logging and if we write logging statement in our own code we should use the same API. For Groovy developers it is nothing more than adding the @Slf4j AST annotation to our classes. The Logback library has an asynchronous appender which has a queue to store incoming logging events. Then a worker on a different thread will invoke a classic blocking appender, like a file or console appender, to actually log the messages. But in our example we don't use the standard async appender from Logback, but use a asynchronous logbook appender from the Reactor project. Now our queue is backed by a very performant reactor ring buffer implementation.

In a recent study, the McKinsey Global Institute concluded that the Internet of Things (IoT) has an economic potential of up to $11.1 trillion a year by 2025. APIs—specifically streaming APIs—enable the IoT vision to become reality. The addition of a real-time streaming proxy and an API management solution addresses some of the unique challenges of these streaming APIs and makes a great combination for any IoT-based enterprise.

Why streaming APIs for IoT? Some of the so-far-so-good Web technologies in use to support the IoT are quickly becoming too inefficient. The reason? Most of them use HTTP as the protocol transport. By definition HTTP is half-duplex and can only deliver full duplex, real-time communications such as the ones required to monitor real world events at the cost of a higher latency and increased network traffic.

PostgreSQL has a great feature called Foreign Data Wrappers (FDW) that allows it to connect directly to outside systems. Although the setup can be a little complicated, once it’s available you can run queries with joins or subqueries against them, insert data, create views, etc. Heroku has dramatically simplified the process of using FDW with PostgreSQL and Redis thanks to Data Links. Let’s try it out.

Clustering Jenkins with Kubernetes in the Google Container Engine

While we’ve already discussed how to use the Google Container Engine to host elastic Jenkins slaves, it is also possible to host the master itself in the Google Container Engine. Architecting Jenkins in this way lets Jenkins installations run more frictionlessly and reduces an administrator’s burden by taking advantage of the Google Container Engine’s container scheduling, health-checking, resource labeling, and automated resource management. Other administrative tasks, like container logging, can also be handled by the Container Engine and the Container Engine itself is a hosted service.

What is Kubernetes and the Google Container Engine?

Kubernetes is an open-source project by Google which provides a platform for managing Docker containers as a cluster. Like Jenkins, Kubernetes’ orchestrating and primary node is known as the “master”, while the node which hosts the Docker containers is called a “minion.” “Pods” host containers/services should on the minions and are defined as JSON pod files.

In my previous post on MiniDumper, I promised to explain in more detail how it figures out which memory ranges are required for .NET heap analysis. This is an interesting story, actually, because I tried a couple of approaches that failed before coming up with the final idea. Basically, I knew that a dump with full memory contains way more information than is necessary for .NET dump analysis. Even if you need the entire .NET heap available, you typically don’t need a bunch of other memory ranges: executable code, Win32 heaps, unused regions of thread stacks, and so much more.

My first attempt was to filter the memory ranges that are put in the dump by using a VM range callback with theMiniDumpWriteDump method. With this approach, every memory range that’s being written into the dump is first passed to the callback, which gets a chance to filter it out. In iOS 9, Apple introduced a new means of implementing automatic layout management (or "autolayout") in iOS applications: the UIStackView class. This UIView subclass arranges its subviews in either a horizontal or vertical line, optionally resizing or redistributing them as needed in response to device size or orientation changes.

In earlier versions of iOS, view layout had to be performed either manually or via layout constraints, neither of which was particularly convenient. UIStackView significantly simplifies this process. Internally, it uses layout constraints to manage views' size and position, hiding the details of constraint management and absolving developers of the responsibility of working with them directly.

Virtual reality advancements are poised to present a Holodeck-like experience, Siri is disturbingly Hal 9000esque, and even cellphones were inspired by “Star Trek.” Google’s latest gadget, Project Soli, is set to absolutely blow minds.

The Linux Foundation announced today the release of its first ever report measuring the estimated value of development costs in the wider scope of open source projects in which it participates.

I just came across an interesting article in The Conversation by Robert Merkel on Australia’s brand new PM, Malcolm Turnbull. Like many, I had not heard of Mr. Turnbull till about a week ago but it turns out that he had a very successful business career in a number of fields, most notably in the IT industry where he was a key early investor and board chairman of Australia’s first large commercial internet service provider, OzEmail. His 1994 investment of A$500,000 reportedly made him A$60 million when sold five years later.

His investment in IT and other technology-based start-ups continued throughout the 2000s, only ending in 2012. Even after this, his involvement with the IT industry continued, as first the shadow Communications Minister and then the Communications Minister under Tony Abbott. Very few senior politicians anywhere in the world have had anything like the breadth of professional experience in these fields that Turnbull has.

Using Docker To Deploy Bluechatter To Bluemix

This week I gave a presentation at the local Bluemix meetup group on Docker containers and Bluemix.

For the demonstration during the presentation I decided I would use one of the apps I first wrote as a Bluemix developer advocate, Bluechatter. Bluechatter is a very basic IRC/chat like application written in Node.js. It uses the pub/sub feature of Redis to distribute chat messages amongst various instances of the application, so it can scale very well. For the meetup demonstration I wanted to show how you can deploy the Bluechatter application as a Docker container in Bluemix.

Infinispan local caches have several features that make it more than just a map—expiration and eviction, listeners, statistics, transactions, cache stores, and so forth. However, this comes at a price—due to all the hooks and object allocation, plain ConcurrentHashMap is faster than local cache.

There are applications that need something in between—great performance but some of those features, too. In our case, the motivation were internal caches in Hibernate Second Level Cache.
