3 Ways To Minimise Negative Review On Google Play

A quick way for people to know if your app is worth downloading is to look at your reviews. Many users will gladly give a 5 star to apps that is functional and does what it says. And then you have users who will give you a 1 star because it doesn’t do what it says, it’s missing a feature, needs more features, too slow (even though they have a really old device), it’s “ugly”, it’s got advertisement (even though it’s a free download) etc. The reality is you can not please everyone. Every app has a goal and it might not be meet the goal of every users but that’s ok! There are an abundance of apps from which to choose, but in this case your app’s reputation is at stake. Have no fear! There are ways you can minimise negative reviews published on Google Play.

1. Encourage users to send feedback via e-mail from your app

Allow users to easily send feedback to you via email by having a “Feedback” button in your app AND RESPOND to all feedback. Users need an outlet when they feel something is wrong, and a one star review is how some people see as the best way to get attention. Let email be the main channel, hear them out and address their problem. For most users, this experience is better than simply posting a one star review and achieving little. It also allows for far more actionable feedback as their is no word limit in email and you can really dig deep as to the root cause of their problem.

2. Include a FAQ

There are often many reviews complaining of the same things. To help minimise the amount of common complaints, providing a FAQ page is always useful to the users. You can have a website and even link to it from your app. Keeping your FAQ up-to-date is also helpful.

3. Reply to negative reviews as soon as you can with an understanding tone

Users like to know the developers are hearing them out. When a negative review has been published, try to understand what the problem is and keep your reply to the point. Be professional and use language that the users can understand. Show empathy if needed. The sooner you can solve the problem, the higher the chance they will turn that review around. Don’t hesitate to ask them to reconsider their review to reflect the value of app as opposed to a punishment for not fulfilling their every desire. People usually respond well when asked.

A great advice is NEVER treat a one star as if they are someone that hates your product (even if that’s what they actually say), you are on their side, every time. Do not be combative and do not be condescending. Always be professional

Not everyone will change their review but that is not as important as making a good app that people want to use. You keep at that and good reviews will naturally flood the bad ones.

Facebook July 10 Breaking Changes – Will your app break?

So what will break existing apps?

Comments “count” field has been removed.

So if your app uses that, you’ll have to get on top of removing it. And replace it with…. nothing in a lot of cases.

If you query the comments object and ask for a summary “'{id}/comments?summary=true” you can still get a count, but you can’t field expand the summary on a wall feed for example. I have opened a question on StackOverflow regarding this here.

The best alternative without extra calls is to at least count the comments there were delivered as part of your query.

Also to remember to remove the “publish_checkin” permission from your auth requests.

Checkins have been removed.

These have been replaced with regular old status posts, so if you are posting using the graph api, just replace the POST to “checkins” to “feed” and you’ll be right as rain.

The only thing to be wry of, is that posting a status with no message (as you would a checkin) is as far as I’m concerned, undocumented behaviour . It works now, but perhaps once July 10 actually kicks in, it might not work, so I would encourage including a message to go along with the “checkin”. I think this is sound advice because I think the logic behind removing pure checkins was to remove posts of low quality, ones without any message.

But I suspect the rest of the changes will only impact those who were already “doing it wrong”.

Android Facebook 3 SDK, should you upgrade?

Facebook released version 3.0 of their SDK a while back, but the majority of apps out there will be using the Facebook 2.0 SDK.

Facebook upon release of the SDK advised customers to upgrade. However, this is not a small task as the entirety of the previous SDK was deprecated.

So this leaves most of you out there with a big problem for no gain right?

Not really.

So you’re worried about future compatibility? Well, just throw the library into your project, TEST and your done.

Facebook 3.0 SDK actually re-implemented all of the deprecated calls of the Facebook 2.0 SDK using Facebook 3.0 calls. So by importing the new library, your code is “using Facebook 3.0 calls”.

I’ve found that all expected behavior is replicated fine. However, if you were misusing the Facebook 2 SDK, you might not be left off the hook when you use the Facebook 3 re-implementation.

eg.

Previously you could just pass a token into the Facebook object and you’d be done.

Facebook facebook = new Facebook(app_id);

facebook.setAccessToken(token);

And then you could make your calls. This behavior is undocumented and will work on Facebook 2 SDK but will fail with Facebook 3. So make sure you set the expiry!

facebook.setAccessExpires(expiry);

So the Facebook 3 SDK is not a perfect drop in and forget it upgrade. It is crucial to retest every facebook interaction your app uses, especially those surrounding the setting up on the facebook object. The above might not be the only behavior that isn’t replicated, but it was the only one that I found when updating a large client project recently.
