It would be a dream trip. This year I finally got the motivation to go for it. I've now been living in Argentine Patagonia for two months. I'm living in a gorgeous ski town called Bariloche. The town is situated on a huge alpine lake that is surrounded by jagged peaks. Sound familiar? Yet, I soon found out that things weren't as familiar as I'd expected.

Naive as I was, I figured the ski season would be the same as home, just exactly the opposite. Ski resorts in Tahoe usually begin operations around Nov. 20th. Big resorts often stay open into late May, providing a season of approximately six months. Apply that to the exact opposite time of year and it would translate to a six month ski season that started in late May and continued until the end of November. Right? Well, not exactly. Needless to say, I was pretty startled to find the the ski resort here didn't have any plans to open before June 19th. That would translate to about December 19th back home. Okay, I can deal with that. That would really only mean missing a few weeks of skiing. No problem.

While conversing with locals about being fired up to start skiing in June I got an interesting response. “Usually the ski resort doesn't open until about July 1st” a local ski guide tells me. Alright, fine, I can cope. Just a little longer. In the beginning of June I started telling myself “just two more weeks”. At the end of two weeks, with no sign of snow I again found myself saying: “just two more weeks and I'll be skiing!”

So I hang on for two more weeks......again. Then bam! I made it! July 1st! Snow, skiing, beers, buddies, good times. Nope. Just rain. Forecast: rain. Thus, I regress to the comfortable position of telling myself “just two more weeks and I'll be...”

The ski resort here in Bariloche now is hoping to open by July 8th. That would be akin to January 8th in the Northern Hemisphere. Can you imagine Tahoe ski resorts not opening until mid January? No? Well you shouldn't have to, it's not your reality. The scary thing now is that I'm down on my knees in the muck praying that the ski resort will open by mid July. I know it won't be great skiing, but I just want to be skiing. Then comes the clincher. When would you think the ski resort would close for the season after such a late opening? Well, obviously it would stay open to around November, right? Once again, not exactly. September 30th is to be the last day of operations. So now I'm sitting in my house, watching the rain pour down while clutching my season's pass that is now only worth 80 days, or less, of skiing.

It's all going to be okay though. Once the snow comes the skiing will be fun and life will regain purpose. Two and a half months of skiing isn't what I pictured, but it should be plenty. In reality, I'm very fortunate just to be here. This place truly is stunning. But I can't help longing for snow and comparing this place to home. Even if this doesn't turn out to be the most epic South American winter ever, I have already learned that I'm very lucky to call Lake Tahoe home.
www.porterstahoe.com

SNOWBOARDER Magazine, in conjunction with MATADORTM by Jack Link’s® and Windells, presents America’s Next Top Pro Model 2010

SNOWBOARDER Magazine, in conjunction with
MATADORTM by Jack Link’s® and Windells,
presents America’s Next Top Pro Model 2010

San Juan Capistrano, CA (July 6, 2009) – From the days of the
legendary Craig Kelly Mystery Air to the infamous Tarquin Robbins
sawed off shotgun deck, pro models have always held an esteemed
place in snowboarding. type="text">Alpine Aid

A couple of my college friends recently put their heads together and started a company called Alpine Aid. Their product is an herbal supplement designed to fight the ill-effects of altitude. Designed by nutritionists and top level athletes this product can help you fight fatigue, headaches, shortness of breath, and a variety of other symptoms related to altitude sickness. While this product is intended for use by top level athletes at elevation, it will also be very helpful for people who are coming to the mountains from sea level and trying to exercise, or even party... Sounds like just about everyone on vacation in Tahoe. I will be using this product to increase my pace and enjoyment in the mountains, check out their website, www.alpineaid.com. And if you've got the time, get out for a mountain bike ride or hike, the trails are in great shape and the wildflowers are going off.
<br The 113-year-old bakery would have become the sixth empty storefront in Clare's three-block downtown.

The officers were on hand for the grand reopening but have hired a manager and will employ local students as staff.

The End.

www.porterstahoe.com

The Backcountry

I believe it's the multitude of shared traits that makes backcountry fly-fishing and backcountry skiing so appealing to me. Both provide a healthy amount of solitude and silence. Both command respect of nature and reverence at its organic beauty. Both make you rely on yourself and breach that safety net of emergency hotlines, instant communication and rapid travel. Then in skiing and in fishing there is a surge of adrenaline and excitement in a peaceful and calm world. For me that adrenaline comes when I'm experiencing those moments of flight on a pair of skis or setting that hook as a monster brown trout just breached the surface water and attacked my floating fly.

I really don't know why I wrote what I just wrote. It really is a terrible introduction for a Trip Report. I guess it has to do with the fact that most people find it contradictory or even oxymoronic that a professional skier/thrill-seeker would be into such a calm and silent sport such as fly-fishing. I guess I just wanted to explain myself to myself. Cause sometimes even I think, "Why the hell do I like this fly-fishing thing so much?"

Anyways, I recently went on a backcountry fly-fishing trip with a few buddies deep into the Sierra wilds. Since your attention span is probably waning by now, here are some pictures and stats of the trip.

Days: 3
Nights: 2
Miles: 18.9
Pack Wgt: 52 lbs.
Trout Caught: Group: 100+ Me: 20+
Trout Eaten: 7
Lakes Fished: 5
Streams Fished: 2
Liquor Consumed: 9 pints of Jameson Irish Whiskey, 1 litre Milagro Tequila

What were all truly looking for.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px;

I like to equate golf to snowboarding, for every perfect park run or steep line you might do there will always be the 6 or 7 other that just didn't feel right. Golf kinda gives me the same feeling in the summer requiring a lot of concentration and good muscle memory. Well that and its hard to be super pissed and shoot a great round. In the same sense of riding getting little tips along the way makes the experience that much better. So when in need I call on my buddy Brett Kuhnsman, PGA pro at Genoa Lakes outside Carson City. What makes it a little better is that Brett was a former snowboard instructor at Squaw Valley, so he can use some snowboard references in his approach at teaching. This guy even wrote a book on golf, kinda a Zen take along pocket guide tool. Below is an excerpt from his book and if you are ever interested in a quick lesson hit Brett up at 772-232-8958 or Visit Genoa Lakes Golf course and ask for him.

The grip is the most important of all the fundamentals.

It all starts with the grip, without that, the other three fundamental will not perform to correct levels for the success needed. There are three types of grips; ten finger, overlap, and interlock. All three can work, but must combine some key components for the grip to work properly. First, your grip must be held in the fingers and not across your palm. Your left thumb print must be on the club for you to have the power and leverage needed to successfully swing. If you open your hand, you should be able to hold the grip in the fingers only, all the while looking at all of your palm. Once the grip is in the fingers and you place the club on the ground, the grooves on the face will be perpendicular to you and the toe should be slightly behind the heal. Loft is our friend and if the clubface is closed it will directly affect the flight and direction of the ball. You could have the proper grip and still hit the ball low and left due to an improper set up or alignment of the clubface. Once that is achieved, grip pressure is crucial to the entire swing. You want to hold the club as lightly as you would hold a kitten. Not so tight as to hurt the kitten, but not so lose at to let it jump out of your hands. The club should feel heavy and the wrists should be free and loose. You will squeeze a bit more at impact to sustain the hit on the club head. The last component is a stronger left hand to promote the domination of the left hand throughout the golf swing. The right hand will be in a cradle-like position to assist the left hand through the swing. The right hand can be our enemy if it becomes too domineering. All this is reversed if you play left handed. Most golfers are right handed. If you are newbie first timer and right handed, may I recommend starting out playing left handed. Your right side is dominant and will be accentuated and you will learn in a fraction of the time. If you haven't seen them before, not only do they rock for a chick band, but the lead singer Anna Kristina does a decent Robert Plant. If you ever see that they're playing in a town near you, I'd recommend checking them out.

To get a taste of Zepparella, click on the live video clips below.....

Zepparella "Bring It On Home" at the River Ranch, Alpine Meadows, CA - 6-25-09 from Chappy on Vimeo.

Zepparella "Whole Lotta Love" at the River Ranch, Alpine Meadows, CA - 6-25-09 from Chappy on Vimeo.

www.porterstahoe.com

Go Skate Day Edit..Check it out!

Last Sunday was Go Skate Day and REELComp and Porters put on an event at the Truckee Skatepark. My dog Tank also made his first skiing debut and for the record he was a hit. As you my or may not know BEN LOVES TECHNO!!! So do yourself a favor and don't watch this without sound. Don't have headphones? grab some skullcandy's or a headphone beanie. Did Josh disable your sound? well that's your problem you were probably watching to much non work related material on a Porters computer. (as we all know it is useless without sound).
Anyways this is my first time riding with Ben which was sweet, and we got to surf together two days prior. He showed me some ski ballet moves, and made me look silly in the bumps. So without further delay (besides your internet connection) ENJOY!!!

Last Day at Mammoth. from Nick Baron on Vimeo.

www.porterstahoe.com

Baja Mexico

Taking a break on the beach watching Cody catch some waves

There is nothing better than flying south to a warm, sunny beach with kick ass surf after the ski season comes to an end. Cody and I did just that this past early June and headed to San Jose del Cabo in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The great thing about Baja is that it is sunny with a balmy temperature of 97 everyday this time of the year. We had plenty of great surf (a killer south swell came through) and tons of R&R. Of course there are only small surf pics posted, we were too busy surfing until we couldn't paddle any longer when it got big and couldn't be bothered. Plus, it really wasn't THAT good so I'm making it all up and no one should bother thinking it's worth their time to travel here for a surf trip...

Saw some elephant seals fighting, and malting their skin which reeked extremely bad. On the way down to see Suzy's aunt and uncle in Newport Beach we had some serious issues with our brakes. The next morning we brought it to a shop in SD and had to get basically everything to do with the brakes fixed.

While that was getting fixed we stayed with Ben & Stacy in Pacific Beach. Ben sent his regards to everyone here at porters and was a little disappointed that I was the only one to come visit him since he moved down there. Suzy and I got to ride some bikes around the boardwalk which was super fun, thanks to Ben & Stacy. Then I had a little surf session with Ben in the afternoon.

Little did I know I was wearing Matt Connelly's wetsuit inside out the whole time. I realized that about half way through the session then Ben started calling me inside out boy. Ben and I also managed to catch the same wave and throw a stinger up top mid surf. It was pretty sweet I wish we had a picture of that. I broke my GoPro case this winter otherwise I would of been wearing it.We partied the night away and the next day had some breakfast and beers with Suzy's Duke buddy. By the way I think happy hour starts at 10:00 in SD.

Then it was off to Mammoth for the last day of shredding with Ben & Stacy. It was pretty fun I never skied with Ben so that was a treat. Mammoth was open at 7:30 and closed at 1:00 so it was a pretty early day on the hill. I got some sweet GoPro footage of Ben doing some bumps & ski ballet. I did not get a chance to edit it yet but it will be up by the end of the week. After Shredding we hit up some hot springs right outside Mammoth it was the perfect ending to a sick road trip. enjoy the pics and the video will be up soon.

www.porterstahoe.com

<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="enclosure" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/porterstahoe/PortersSports/~5/tx6J43L54YY/video-play.mp4" length="0" type="video/mp4" /><feedburner:origEnclosureLink>http://www.blogger.com/video-play.mp4?contentId=75c9e65060b064b2&type=video%2Fmp4</feedburner:origEnclosureLink>

fieldproductions.com Athlete interview: JT Holmes

FP catches up with the legendary californian kid, JT Holmes.
Field Productions

FP: Hey JT. Whats going on? Enjoying Norway?

JT: Crazy thing going on. Back in March, I met with the producer of 60 Minutes. He was interested in doing an episode on Wingsuit flying and I told him it had to be Norway. He has followed through on everything we discussed and today I am off to Molde to pick up the crew. I arrived a week early to get back into it after being rattled mentally by the Shane thing. I feel good. It is nice to be back here. Good friends, nice hikes, familiar faces and places. The weather hasn’t been good for going to the big mountains, I have jumped the Base Race cliff once a day for the last 6 days.

FP: Oh, nice. Can´t wait to see that episode of 60 minutes.
You visit Norway quite a lot. Why so? What brings you back?

JT: Norway is my favorite.

FP: So, first year shooting with Field Productions. Tell us, how was the experience working three weeks with Filip?

JT: It was great. Challenging snow conditions at first, but we had a cool road trip and spent a lot of time in the mountains. With 3 weeks we were sure to get the good snow, and when it came, it was on. I am really happy with what we got and I hope Norway enjoys seeing it too.

FP: What is the biggest difference filming with Field Productions, compared to the major companies as Warren Miller and Matchstick Productions?

JT: To be honest, it isn’t much different at all, except for that with Field your producer is also the filmer, the editor, the travel planner, AND the business brains behind the operation, so when you pass out dead tired after a long day in the mountains, looking to rest before the next one, you hear in the next hotel room the sound of Filip on the phone, working on the next project, securing sponsors, coordinating his athletes schedules. It is a good thing he is young. Otherwise, he may not be able to work so hard and still spend the day in the mountains full of energy. We’d catch him sleeping pretty hard in the car sometimes, and he likes his Red Bull.

FP: Why do you think Squaw Valley, CA has produced so many professional skiers and snowboarders through the years? Is it the ”Le Chamois” (famous après ski and pizza), or must it be the endless terrain you got over there?

JT:. What have tons of really fun steep terrain, not huge stuff, but fun stuff. The reason that Squaw Valley produces so hard is the terrain and the snow. Our snow fills in the steep goods right away, so we area ble to get into it immediately when the snow comes, whereas in the Alps or the Rockys you might have to wait til mid season to get into the steep fun stuff. Also, it is the overall layout of the mountain. Everything is visible form the chairlifts and easily accessed from the top. During a 7 minute chairlift ride, you are watching everyone skiing lines, hucking, charging. On powder days people are yelling and cheering for big airs, being typical loud Americans. Its not like you are crammed into some foggy cable car where you see nothing. Plus, you get to the top and and just go. We don’t chat at the top or traverse. You just go straight into it. 500 meters or so of fun stuff the whole way and then back to the fast chairs with funny people watching. Its fun. Ask Filip and Eirich. They’ll be back. And yes, very cheap beer and good Pizza slopeside. We win when it comes to Apres ski. Hands down.

FP: Whats on your agenda for the summer?

JT: Just splitting time between here and home. I also have the opportunity to do some big wall climbing in Yosemite and won’t pass on that because it is a great chance for me to learn, and fun experience. Late August is likely to bring some Southern Hemisphere turns.

FP: And, will you be attending the ”Eyes Wide Open” world premiere in Oslo, 19th of September?

JT: Wouldn’t miss it.

FP: See you there!

On Wednesday night Jay and I went to the Lower East side and went to the Mercury Lounge, a well known music venue. We knew nothing of the bands that were playing but we payed the $10 cover and we were not disappointed, We arrived and the 3rd band was just finishing up. When the forth band took the stage the lead singer had a Daisy Duck hat on and I looked at jay and said " this band is going to be AWESOME!" They are from Detroit and their name is Deastro, and yes Lars this is my new favorite band! Check out the pics of them below. Iwas going to upload a video but it is converting in Vimeo and it says it will be done in 11 hours. Hooray!

Thursday I got up early and jumped on the subway and went to the Museum of Modern Art. Now I understand that not everyone likes modern art, but I think that the MoMA is well worth the time. With works from Picasso and Van Gough to Warhol and Matisse it encompasses all types of modern art and plus it is not everyday you are able to see actual painting by Picasso.

I then met Jay on the west side and we went to a few galleries...needless to say yesterday was ARTastic. Jay then had to go to a meeting for work. The meeting was held at this amazing studio named Milk, click here to check it out. This studio is a place for fashion shoots, magazine shoots and ect. The production manager is a friend of Jay's and he invited us to have a beer after the meeting at the Milk's bar, * note this is not a public bar. It was awesome! Thanks Bevan!

www.porterstahoe.com

Trade one season for the next

Now that the last bits of snow are melting in Tahoe, it's time to start setting sights for some summer skiing action! Jumped on the L train towards Manhattan. Once in the city I went uptown to Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History. At the museum there was an exhibit about frogs. I like frogs so I decided to purchase the regular museum ticket and the additional ticket for the frogs. Before I headed to the frog hall I wandered through the animals of the Pacific Northwest exhibit, each diorama had a few lingering kids and parents looking at the bobcats, deer and the mountain lions. I then turned the corner and there was the bear exhibit....it was so crowded that you could barley see the bears...people where all excited and all I could think about was "hey I just saw bear the other day and mistook it for a big dog by the Squaw 7-11". So funny to see people excited about a stuffed bear..anyways today is another day, enjoy the frog pics.

PS. The frogs were not stuffed frogs.

www.porterstahoe.com
