Books in Suitcases Book Club

Inside the waiting room of the Port Moody Station Museum you can find many old and beaten up suitcases. Each suitcase is filled with the contents of a person’s life.
The suitcases were created by student’s from Burnaby North Secondary. Their task was to imagine what an immigrant would bring on their journey to Canada.
The suitcases contain, necessities like clothes and shoes, but more importantly there are items of memory – pictures, letters, diaries. Items which provide safety and comfort.
Currently we all are forced into lock down. We self isolate to bring the curve down, together we all help to overcome this pandemic.
We are undertaking a personal journey, cut off form our normal busy lives.

Books provide us with endless places for our mind to travel, books can be companions during our isolation, books allow us to travel back and forward in time.
Join the Port Moody Public Library and Port Moody Station Museum and share your book with us. What book would be your travel companion, or is your rock in theses uncertain days?
The librarians from the Port Moody Public Library will each present their books, and in the Station Museum’s train car each suitcase will be opened to reveal a book.
Join us on this imaginary journey and please share your book with us all.

An amazing artist,  Claire Lawrence started 2020 Doodles:  Life During a Pandemic, which captures a glimpse into what is happening around the world during the pandemic. Claire is generously going to add her doodles to the Port Moody Station Museum’s collection.

Claire Lawrence is a storyteller and visual artist living in British Columbia, Canada. She has been published in Canada, the United States, United Kingdom and India. Her work has been performed on BBC radio. Claire’s stories have appeared in numerous publications including: Geist, Litro, Ravensperch, Brilliant Flash Fiction. She has a number of prize winning stories, and was nominated for the 2016 Pushcart Prize. Claire’s artwork has appeared in many magazines including: A3 Review and Press, Black Lion Journal, Esthetic Apostle, Sunspot and La Piccioletta Barca. Her goal is to create and publish in all genres, and not inhale too many fumes.

The Museum is so thankful for this great addition to our collection.

We are excited to now be doing an online Easter Event ! We have teamed up with Jeff McLellan and our mutual friend the Easter Bunny to plan one of the biggest picnics in Port Moody history ALL ONLINE. (maintaining social distancing at all times of course, as we all have to do our part).

The picnic is this Saturday April 11 and starts at 11:15am. This is an opportunity for you and your family to plan a picnic that can take place in your yard, living room, garage, patio or kitchen. Get your picnic blankets out and be settled for 11:30am when Jeff McLellan will be joined by our good friend the Easter Bunny ! This will be on the Port Moody Discussion Group’s Facebook Live and will  also be viewable on the Port Moody Station Museum’s Facebook page ( with a viewing party link).

Soon we will celebrate Easter – this time our amazing Easter event moves from our museum to a digital event. It is important that we all bring the curve down. But as a community here in Port Moody we are more connected then ever. Starting today we will post one historic image with a hidden Easter bunny or egg. Every day at 4pm we will show you where the egg or bunny is hidden.
