Forever Until Now: Contemporary Art from Cambodia

This 10 Chancery Lane Gallery, Hong Kong, exhibit provides, for the first time, a complete overview of contemporary art in today’s cambodia. Wide-ranging practices in painting, sculpture, film and photography by fourteen artists spanning three generations reveal new and culturally specific perspectives from a country too often defined by ancient temples and collective trauma.

The artists selected for Forever Until Now are anomalies in a country with an anomalous history. They are fourteen of only forty practicing artists in a Kingdom of fourteen million. They are either survivors or were born into a culture of survivalist thought and practice. They have coped and they continue to cope with creative tolerance to their surroundings. They evolve visual art practices regardless, or, in some cases, in spite of what is absent.

The regime of the Khmer Rouge from 1975-1979 killed the majority of educated people, including an estimated ninety percent of artists. In terms of visual arts practices, surviving artists moved forward, understandably, by enlivening traditions that were nearly lost.

The guideposts by which artists express themselves are responses to personal living experience. In this way, the artists provide a window into contemporary thought in Cambodia, with some artists considering the past as a means to build collective memory, and others reflecting the present as a means to consider the future.

Isn't this too charming? These photos are part of a spring auction by Artnet.com - a marvelous collection of iconic fashion, portrait and vintage photography.

Paris has been home to a number of legendary artists and writers, including Samuel Beckett, James Joyce and Pablo Picasso. The sale includes two photographs of Samuel Beckett taken by Bob Adelman in 1986. A pensive James Joyce is the subject of a 1937 gelatin silver print by Joseph Breitenbach.

Fashion photographers also figure prominently in the sale, including The Mainbocher Corset, Paris, the intricate design of American couturier Mainbocher, photographed by Horst P. Horst for Paris Vogue in 1939. Three photographs by photojournalist Robert Doisneau celebrate the eccentricities of everyday Parisian life including Chicken on a Leash, 1940.

A selection of vintage works from the nineteenth century as well as images of Paris by a newer generation of photographers round out the show.

The world will celebrate Duke Ellington's 110th anniversary starting April 29, 2009, with a brass band kickoff parade in NYC's Central Park.

The "Duke" is considered by many, worldwide, to be America’s greatest composer, bandleader and recording artist. Many believe he's the most prolific 20th century composer because his work encompasses so much variety, range of forms, and number of compositions. His development was one of the most spectacular in the history of music—underscored by more than fifty years of sustained achievement as an artist and entertainer.

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 to May 24, 1974) was, without question, the most significant figure in jazz and, in fact, all American music. Regarded in his lifetime as the most influential contributor to our music culture, he received in 1966 the President’s Gold Medal from Lyndon Johnson and in 1969 the Medal of Freedom from President Nixon. After his death, recognition for The Duke actually increased—including a special award citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board in 1999.

The kickoff affair will be held at the Duke Ellington Memorial, located inside Duke Ellington Circle, on 110th Street and 5th Avenue in Manhattan. The Memorial is the first monument in New York City dedicated to an African American and the first memorial to The Duke in the United States.

The first comprehensive retrospective of the work of Salvador Dalí ever to be staged in Australia is coming exclusively to the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) as the sixth exhibition in the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series. Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire will bring together more than 200 stunning works by in all media including painting, drawing, watercolour, etchings, sculpture, fashion, jewellery, cinema and photography.

The exhibition will be drawn from the two largest collections of Salvador Dalí in the world, the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí in Figueres, Spain and the Salvador Dalí Museum in St Petersburg, Florida. Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire will explore the brilliance of Dalí through chronological sections with visitors first encountering the artist as an accomplished young Impressionist painter with what is widely considered to be his first masterpiece, Self-Portrait with Raphaelesque Neck.

The exhibition will then move through Dalí’s experimentation with Cubism, Abstraction, Neoclassicism and New Objectivity during his student years and his leadership of the Surrealist movement in Paris during the 1930s.

Dr Ted Gott, Senior Curator International Art, said Dalí’s artistic imagination was constantly fed by the ruggedly romantic landscapes of his native Catalonia. “These stunning landscapes, infused with his unique imagination, informed the classic Surrealist paintings with which Dalí astonished the art world in the early 1930s and for which he is so well known for today. A strong group of paintings from the period of Dalí’s involvement with Surrealism in Paris will be included in the exhibition,” said Dr. Gott.

Salvador Dalí: Liquid Desire will also include the most significant Dalí work held in an Australian collection, the Lobster Telephone from the National Gallery of Australia, arguably one of the most famous sculptures of the twentieth century. “One of the great innovators in the history of 20th century art, Dalí’s extraordinary artistic output extends far beyond Surrealism. He was a true genius in every respect; a giant on the international stage whose art has influenced more than just his own generation. There was nothing the man could not do,” said Dr Gott.

Holland & Japan - 400 Years of Trade

From 11 January to 25 May 2009, the Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport presents Holland & Japan: 400 Years of Trade, marking the four-hundredth anniversary of commercial ties between the Netherlands and Japan. The exhibition examines the privileged position Dutch traders enjoyed on the isolated island of Deshima and the artistic and cultural interchange that resulted from their commercial contacts. Among over 20 works presented in the show are lacquerware, porcelain, a screen and paintings from the Rijksmuseum collection. The centrepiece is a scroll painting of over 6 metres in length, depicting scenes of everyday life on Deshima.

Another more recent acquisition is the spectacular portrait of the Cock Blomhoff family. This huge silk painting shows the senior merchant Jan Cock Blomhoff with his wife Titia, the first European woman in Japan, their son and servants.

It was through Dutch traders that the Japanese learned about Western technology and culture, just as it was through Dutch contacts that the West gradually discovered more about Japanese society. A number of unique Japanese paintings, such as the wonderful screen portraying a Dutch ship, a view of Nagasaki Bay and the island of Deshima, and a scroll painting over 6 metres long showing how the Dutch passed their time in their commercial enclave, provide a glimpse of Deshima and its Dutch inhabitants in the 18th and 19th century. Also displayed in the exhibition is an early Dutch imitation lacquer box, an extremely rare and exceptional object.

For the first time in four decades SeaWorld's star killer whale is communicating in something other than clicks, squeaks, whistles and trills. Shamu, who writes under the Twitter handle "RealShamu", started tweeting at 1:16 p.m. April 7, attracting close to 1,000 followers in his first week.

Shamu has tweeted on subjects as diverse as Moroccan tree goats, Brazilian soccer teams, the Obamas' Portuguese water dog "Bo", and pubs in the English countryside. Asked if he likes to eat lobsters, Shamu replied emphatically that he did not, telling his readers simply, "They're pinchy."

ArtAction and Ana Tzarev Gallery present "Frames of Reality", the first joint Israeli-Palestinian photo exhibition of its kind. this May and June. The exhibit features dozens of photographs taken by 20 Palestinian and Israeli photojournalists. The exhibit reflects the photograpers' thoughts about daily life in the region, particularly the pressures of ongoing violence. The project was developed during 12 joint workshops over a six month period, implemented by the Peres Center for Peace and "Local Testimony" which established an online social network that kept the photojournalists in constant contact with one another. The exhibit opened last fall in Jaffa, Israel.
