So I am having a limited run of tshirts printed for an even t I’m doing and I have extras. I thought originally that I would bring them along with me but I do not have the room…

My solution. Give them away to people who buy the font. Why not? Hey, you’re gonna buy the typeface so why not get a little somethin-somethin as a thanks.

The ‘Rules’
The next 10 people that purchase the typeface (family or single weight) from MyFonts (Link to Rhythm) and email me (neil -at- positype -dot- com) a copy of their email receipt along with their mailing address will receive a tshirt from me. Sizes are limited: only Large and XLarge remain. This is a first come, first serve basis. I have 10 extra and I don’t plan right now to print more. Shirts will be delivered to me by next week and I will immediately begin prepping to send via post.

This is fastest, quickest way I know to give these out and show a little appreciation to the people buying my typefaces. We’ll see if it works and I might do it again with future work.

Thanks everyone.

A work of Islamic calligraphy by a Japanese artist sold on December 16, 2010 for $50,000 in a Sotheby’s auction in Doha, the auction house said.

The work was created by Koichi Honda, 64, a professor at Tokyo-based Daito Bunka University.

Honda is known as an Islamic calligrapher. The 61-year-old professor of international relations at Daito Bunka University in Saitama Prefecture is Japan’s leading authority on Arabic calligraphy, a devotional art form that has evolved over the course of 1,400 years and has detailed rules determining every single facet of the practice, whether the script is executed on paper or vellum or is fired into the gorgeous ceramic tiling that can hardly fail to astonish any visitor to a mosque.

The work depicts a phrase from the Quran in a round shape against a green background, according to Sotheby’s and Honda. Islamic calligraphy, dating back to the 10th century, depicts passages from the Quran instead of images, which are prohibited as iconolatry in Islam.

Tactical is nothing more than a testosterone-laced typeface. Rigid, mechanical and unforgiving. Originally conceived in 2007 while I was working through the early sketches of Ginza, Tactical features hard 45-degree angles and the presence of a curve for curve’s sake is just not there. Complementing the original is a Stencil variant (inspired by the military, marathon video game, explosion-influenced name) and matching Obliques—altogether creating a sharply coordinating family.

Japanese calligraphy is a challenge at the best of times. So why go to the trouble of using a piece of paper as large as the side of a bus, and a brush that’s almost two meters long and weighs 50 kg?

Come New Year’s and the usually urbane pastime of shodo(Japanese calligraphy) suddenly grows in stature, literally. The primary reason is the tradition of kakizome, where people take up brushes and paper to make written declarations of their goals for the year.
