oh so funny and yet so sadly true

These are very exciting news - an app store for businesses. Why is Facebook so incredibly successful? Because of thousands of apps (agreed, a lot of them are rubbish and annoying but there are some treasures to be found). Why is the iPhone so successful? Yes, because of it's slick interface but certainly also because with thousands of great apps it has become so much more than a simple utility tool. Apple would have never had the resources to build all those apps on its own. Smart move = open up the platform. Similar case with Twitter. It's a platform. My colleague Lee Provoost also reminded me to mention apps that are built on government data and Vodafone's application initiative. 

Thus, the developments we have seen in the consumer market will also take hold in the enterprise market. Of course, it will take longer and be more restrictive (security and governance will be great hurdles). But in the end enterprise products will have to open up. Third-parties will develop tools on top of them and considerably change the way we work. My crystal ball tells me that we will see a surge in the number of (small yet) very useful tools in the enterprise. Developers will be drawn to it because that's where ultimately the money is.

Awesome slide deck from Michael Donnelly at Coca-Cola about how the company uses social media to achieve certain business objectives. Also, I like their active and engaging usage of FB fan pages. Most brands are setting up a fan page or group but are unable or unwilling to sustain the effort of actively managing it.

Very cool. FB is opening up step by step. Now you can subscribe to the events calendar and your friends' birthday calendar in iCal, Outlook and Google Calendar. Now I am just waiting to be able to subscribe to FB groups via RSS.

Since I am surrounded by Mac geeks, this has slipped my radar completely. Ribbon Hero seems to be a fun and engaging way of learning to use MS Office applications. Now I am pondering if this is something that could work in the corporate world, too.
