NBC: DON’T air Skechers’ Super Bowl ad promoting abuse of greyhounds Dear Susan, NBC plans to air a Super Bowl commercial that uses greyhound racing to show how fast Skechers' new sneakers are. But an undercover investigation has revealed that the Arizona track that serves as a backdrop for the commercial is notorious for extreme animal cruelty. And with over 100 million viewers expected for Super Bowl XLVI, though, animal advocates fear the ad will effectively whitewash an industry so dependent on animal cruelty that it's outlawed in 38 states. GREY2K USA recently published findings of an undercover investigation that exposed the Tuscon Greyhound Park’s shocking cruelty. Now, the group has started a petition on Change.org asking NBC not to air Skechers' commercial during the biggest American sporting event of the year. Will you sign GREY2K USA's petition telling NBC to take a stand against animal cruelty by refusing to air Skechers' new commercial, shot at the Tuscon Greyhound Park, during the Super Bowl? When it learned Skechers was filming an ad at the Tuscon Greyhound Park, GREY2K USA wanted to draw attention to that specific track's terrible record of mistreating greyhounds. Through its undercover investigation, the group had already found that the track was: muzzling greyhounds while they're warehoused in dark, cramped kennels; providing inadequate exercise out of doors; feeding dogs raw meat from diseased animals and animals dead before slaughter; running dogs in dangerous conditions; and ignoring a disturbing frequency (every 3-4 days) of serious injuries like fractured skulls, broken bones, dislocations and muscle tears. Then, when GREY2K USA found out the ad was planned to air during the Super Bowl and had some of the biggest names in sports behind it, it became clear this issue was much bigger than just one track in Tuscon. Thousands of dogs each year suffer broken legs, cardiac arrest, spinal cord paralysis and broken necks in the dog racing industry. When the dogs are no longer profitable, they're killed. Super Bowl ads are the most sought after slots on the air all year, NBC wouldn’t have any trouble replacing Skechers' ad with another. All that's needed is enough of a public outcry to get the broadcaster to drop Skechers’ ad promoting dog cruelty. Shut down the Connyland dolphinarium where two dolphins were killed by a rave Dear Susan, Two dolphins are dead after the Connyland themepark in Switzerland allowed a two-day rave to take place just a few yards from their tank. The pair died agonizing, drawn-out deaths, seizing and foaming at the mouth. Veterinarians now say their deaths were likely caused by the ear-splitting music of the rave and drugs that ravers threw into the dolphins' tank. Carin Zellerman is an animal activist living in Sweden. After hearing about the tragedy -- and the fact that Connyland ignored protests by local activists who warned a rave would endanger the dolphins -- she decided to start a petition on Change.org to save the remaining dolphins from Connyland's negligence. Please sign Carin's petition calling on Swiss officials to shut down the Connyland dolphinarium where two dolphins died after a rave last month. Eight dolphins have died at Connyland in the past three years, and a 2010 investigation into alleged violations of Swiss animal welfare laws at Connyland is still pending. Meanwhile, the health of the remaining dolphins at Connyland is slowly deterioriating  (due to illness and chemical poisoning as well as claustrophobia that results in depressive behavior and sometimes self-abuse). The good news is that a  global outcry over this disaster is fueling the longstanding domestic movement to get Connyland's dolphin tank -- the last dolphinarium in Switzerland -- shut down. Swiss officials can't ignore this gross violation of animal welfare; they need to know that the world is watching, and that thousands expect them to save Connyland's remaining dolphins. He doesn't know it, but fighting midtown traffic isn't the only battle his owner and operator, Ian McKeever, has been waging. "We hold New York's most important commodity in the palm of our hands - that's the tourist," said McKeever, the Irish-born owner of 11 carriage horses and Chateau Stables on W. 48th St. "We give them a gateway to New York." But following a spate of headline-making incidents - including one where a horse dropped dead - opponents of the industry want to finally take that commodity permanently out of the hands of carriage horse drivers and owners like McKeever. "Obviously, the number of accidents that have happened recently gives me ammunition to start talking to my fellow senators," said state Sen. Tony Avella, a former City Councilman Council member who has introduced legislation in Albany to ban the industry from its last vestige in the city. "There's a reason horse-drawn carriages don't exist anymore," he said. And last week, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced she will introduce legislation to increase veterinary oversight of carriage horses. On Oct. 23, Charlie, a 15-year-old draft horse, shocked onlookers when he suddenly fell dead in Central Park, some 20 days after his debut pulling carriages along city streets. While the cause of death is still not known, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which polices the industry, said Charlie suffered from ulcers and had a fractured tooth. Dr. Pamela Corey, an ASPCA veterinarian, initially concluded in a report on Charlie's death that the agency was concerned the horse was forced to work through painful maladies. But Corey later tried to change her statement to say Charlie's labors didn't contribute to his death - a move that raised eyebrows. The agency then suspended her.
