The Boy Scouts have been busy this past decade. I just started running these trails in Laguna Canyon again (haven't done so since training for the Flo Jo 1/2 Marathon 10 yrs ago) recently and I'm stoked to find a number of new, very well maintained trails.

Logged quite a few miles on account of those Scouts, thank you very much.

Got me some catching up to do.

On Sunday I had the good fortune to spend the day hiking with some people I love. More than just mine own, cousins and uncles were involved. The highlight being some time spent in a lovely oak (I think) tree.

Boys are built to climb (even big boys), and in my experience, we're drawn to it if given the opportunity. I'm always grateful for the chance to give expression to innate desires.

Cliche, I know, but my single biggest challenge in life, for as long as I can remember, is not living in the moment. Always with an eye to the future, planning for some life that doesn't yet exist but which, according to the theory, will. It's a foolhearty existence, and honestly, it makes my head hurt.

Today I'm thankful for the inclination to change. To stop planning for or worrying over a figment of my imagination, and to start being...here. Now. Always.

My_people

It's been a couple dozen years since I last visited the Boat Parade in Newport. As with so many things, my memory over-sold it. But it was nice to be on Balboa Island with Tess and the boys, enjoying the energy that crowds always provide.

And tonight I'm thankful for my camera's primary deficiency, namely, it doesn't perform very well in low light. But alas, I like these images just fine.

I love the ocean, for a lot of reasons. But I find myself, and my boys, spending most of our beach time digging in the sand. Something about unearthing seems powerful. Important.

It's a creative process that requires we constantly adapt as the two greatest agents of change - water and imagination - interact.

There's gold in the effort, and I'm grateful for the reward.

There's plenty of shit not going well for me and my tribe of 4 right now. But you know what? My heart is full of love for my people, and the wonder I used to know as a boy seems to be showing up more often these days. Could I use an inheritance from a long lost uncle right about now? Sure. But not at the expense of what I've got already.

Nope, this valley is just part of the scenery as I pursue the next mountain top. And I'm thankful for the perspective it offers.

Dang, almost forgot. :)

Today, for maybe the 5th time, I received an email letting me know that someone had sent one of the images (pictured here) I use on my blog (www.howtomatter.com) as an ecard to someone. I offer up this capability in the Gallery tab of my site, letting anyone click on an image and send it along with a message to whomever they choose. When that happens, I get notified.

That's pretty sweet, actually, and always makes me feel like I've connected with someone in a small but important way. These words I write, and images I create...that they might play a role in someone else's story from time to time is something that makes me thankful.
