Custom Bladeworks

I am a knife and tool designer. It’s my challenge to work beautiful hi-tech materials into a useful piece of art. Knifemaking is art, a manner to express my fantasy and explore new techniques. I started making knives in the late 90′s. In that time I had a nice collection of production knives. I couldn’t find the ideal edc folder and had plans for some modifications on a smaller folder. First I made several drawings, tried some adjustments on folding knife and finally I came to the idea to start making my own knives.

With conviction I follow the philosophy “less is more”. A clean design with simple construction emphasizes the basic function of a knife. Adding more materials or parts often seems to be easier but ultimately, simplicity has more advantages. The user needs little or no explanation as to how the knife works, and there is a trust from the first contact. Difficult or unknown mechanisms also demands more maintenance, and have more chance for failure. In knifemaking there no real limits, in the “knife world” there is a lot of innovation but in my experience a clean knife design has more chances to get that timeless appearance.

SMS to Paper Airplanes

Purpose, I tried to visualize the text message communication between my girlfriend and myself. Since we are in a long distance relationship and living in two different countries text messages are often the easiest way to communicate. The challenge was to find a medium, which is variable and able to visualize the information of the text messages, but at the same time allows to keep the content private. For me the paper airplane was the perfect image for this scenario, because the text messages as well as travelling by plane are the most common ways for us to cover the distance. Additionally the paper airplanes were divided in two types depending on the length of their text. Finally, the paper airplanes resulting from this construction plan were placed in the room depending on the time when they were sent, as well as their emotional value.

When using Reeder, all changes will be synced with Google Reader. This means if (for example) you read an article in Reeder it will also be marked as read in Google Reader. The same is true if you read in Google Reader. When syncing the next time, Reeder will just pick up the changes.

Mast Brothers Chocolate

The story of Mast Brothers Chocolate is one of family and one of
craft. Rick and Michael Mast, the young owners and proprietors of the
company, make organic, artisanal sweets in their Brooklyn-based
confectionery. They take great care with their ingredients (cacao
beans imported directly from South America), their manufacturing
process (time-honored techniques alongside custom-built machinery by a
former aerospace engineer) and even their packaging.
“We originally just wrapped our chocolate in butcher paper, in hopes
of doing anything we could to communicate the message that chocolate
is food — not candy,” Rick Mast told me by e-mail. “We soon realized
that the packaging needed something more so we tried to retain the
feel of butcher paper but with beautifully designed patterns.” Every
chocolate bar they create is hand-wrapped in specially designed
patterned paper, one pattern for each of their many flavors. Although
understated, the packaging, in its simplicity and thoughtfulness,
alludes to the nature of the product it contains.

Kramer Knives

After 10 years working in professional kitchens, I knew it wasn't for
me. I could never be top chef and I didn't want to be. Instead I would
support the culinary world by caring for its most important tool-the
kitchen knife.
I traveled the country learning the secrets of knife sharpening and
eventually started a business driving an old mail truck from
restaurant to restaurant asking chefs for their most damaged knives.
After brining life back to those knives, even making them better than
new, a passion was born.
Then, while at school for Bladesmithing to deepen my understanding of
knives, I realized I wanted not just to sharpen knives but to make
them, and make them for the industry that I knew and loved.
That was 1994. Since then, I have become one of 120 master Bladesmiths
in the US. I have devoted my life to working with metal and fire,
mastering steel composition, construction and shaping in the
single-minded pursuit of the perfect kitchen knife.
My knives are a combination of artistry, old-fashioned craftsmanship,
and modern technology.

F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2011

Twenty years ago, no state had an obesity rate above 15 percent. Today, more than two out of three states, 38 total, have obesity rates over 25 percent, and just one has a rate lower than 20 percent. Since 1995, when data was available for every state, obesity rates have doubled in seven states and increased by at least 90 percent in 10 others.
