When I was young, my poor dad wanted me to go to a good college and get a good job. To him, that was the path to security. To him, that was being rich.

I ended up going to the Merchant Marine Academy, one of the top schools in the nation, which at the time afforded some of the highest paying jobs after graduation.

I learned some valuable lessons such as discipline and leadership at the academy. But I didn’t learn how money worked or how to run a business. I learned those things later in life thanks to my rich dad and by finding jobs where I could work to learn rather than work to earn, such as my sales job with Xerox.

College prepared me to be a good employee, not a good entrepreneur or investor.

Thankfully, when I went to university, it was relatively affordable. I didn’t have to take out big loans, and I didn’t have the debt of my education hanging over my head. Also, at the time, you really could get a high-paying job if you wanted one, along with the high taxes that came with it.

I feel for today’s graduates because that’s not the case. Today’s graduates are paying obscene amounts of money for tuition, taking on crippling debt, and finding a job market that doesn’t justify the costs.

This week, I came across an article on CNNMoney.com, “My Degree Isn’t Worth the Debt!”, that should be a warning for all the young people thinking about starting university this fall.

The article features testimonials from six recent graduates on why they took on too much debt for the return their education afforded. Combined, the debt load of the six students is $701,800, most of which will take most of their adult life to pay off.

Here are a few quotes from the testimonials in the article:

“I have had a good life, but now at age 37, the weariness of carrying this financial burden frustrates me to no end. My son is nine years old now and will want to attend college when he graduates high school. But what will I tell him? First I have to decide if the college degree is worth the debt. I hope by the time he is making his decision, I will have figured it out.”

“I once believed that part of the American Dream was to earn a college education and this would ensure a great career and financial freedom. Unfortunately I am losing hope. I'm a mother of three, and my husband and I have been turned down from purchasing a home due to our income-to-debt ratio.”

“As social workers, we both love what we do, and we come home with a smile. But I will give you one small example of how desperate our lives are: when my wife graduated in 2007, she owed approximately $41,000 in her private alternative loans.

Three years after we started paying the minimum payments on this loan, you would think it would go down. Instead, we now owe $48,000 because of the interest!”

“My debt is a life-swallowing, all-consuming, hole in my life. No college degree is worth that.”

“I wanted to be a journalist, but I've resigned myself to the fact that I won't be able to support myself on an entry-level salary in that field. Instead, I took a temporary job providing customer service to a cell phone company”

“My life revolves around work. I'm barely able to afford rent, I'm cutting back on bills and I'm barely able to feed myself. Why? Because almost half my monthly income goes to Sallie Mae.”

Those are the words of people who believed the lie of the old rules of money and who now are paying for those lies that were sold to them. And they are the words of victims of a system that is both corrupt and criminal.

Many people say I’m anti-education, but nothing is further from the truth. I’m anti-corruption, and I’m anti-conspiracy. The student-loan racket in this country does not serve our students, it serves the rich.

I’m pro-education. I believe that complete education—education that includes comprehensive financial education—is the most important factor in determining whether you will be wealthy or not.

So, if you are considering college this fall—or if your child is getting ready for college—I ask you to educate yourself on the cost of that education…and the expected return.

The last thing I want is for you to add your words to the ones quoted above.

The last thing I want is for you to learn the hard way that it wasn’t worth it.

I encourage you to count the cost, and I also encourage you to explore other forms of education that may prepare you for what you want to do in life and that will provide you a good return—not what the rich want you to do and will provide them a good return.

This can of course be translated to the Philippines setting. A lot of people are doing doing everything they can to put their child in a good University or College. So it's good to consider the cost and the return. And consider pursuing Financial Education right beside an Academic Education.

When most people think about business they think about the stress, the longer hours, the sacrifices made.

This is what you get when you think about SMALL Businesses. If you don’t understand then it’s best if you read on.

One of the best reasons to start a business, a BIG business, is to CREATE TIME. Yes you can do that. Not by creating some futuristic time-machine (although that would be nice), but by creating more resources.

Let's think about it...

Why do people work?
To make money.

 For what?
To give a good life to our families.
To have a better standard of living.
To have the opportunity to travel.
To enjoy life.

Why do people continue working?
To have more of the above.

But what if you had enough income coming in every month to pay for everything above? What if you didn’t have to continue working for that income?

Would you still work? Would OFWs still go abroad for YEARS at a time? Definitely not. It doesn’t make sense unless you really REALLY love being away from your loved ones.

The key to doing that is creating wealth. So what is wealth?

Wealth is not measured in money. It's measured in TIME.
How many days can you live without working? That is your wealth.

If you have P1,000,000 saved and need P200,000/year for expenses, you have a wealth of 5 years (1,000,000/200,000 = 5).

If you have P300,000 passive income per year (income without work created thru business and investments) and need P200,000/year for expenses, you have infinite wealth (plus P100,000 surplus) 

So what do you choose? Working for limited wealth or infinite wealth?

If you absolutely have to know one thing about Asian economy then this must be it. This can affect all our lives in every way and if we don’t take advantage of this opportunity then it’s like missing the train and waiting for the next one in 100 years.

Will you ride the wave or will you be wiped out?

Asian economies are making an astonishing rebound. After the global economic decline, Asian countries such as China, Indonesia, Singapore, and South Korea are leading the way while the other countries are following suit. There are more talks of regional cooperation and possibly a regional currency similar to the Euro.

 The dollar could lose its reserve currency status to the renminbi [the Chinese Yuan], according to Stephen D. King, HSBC's group chief economist and global head of economics.

Asia is becoming the Engine of Economic Growth against the Global Economic Crisis.

Western Countries are more sluggishly recovering due to bad practices such as welfare, the sub-prime mess, the big bank bailouts etc. If you want to know about these just google them.

Asian countries are eventually realizing that western economic models have only brought to their own economies. Hit by the global financial crunch, they are now engaged in building a new financial architecture for themselves. This is effectively decolonizing Asian minds, making us realize that we have to forge our own standards.

Economic power is slowly shifting to the East as the Western countries passes on the torch.

So where does the Philippines, and YOU, fit in this? Here’s 3 examples:

1. As Asian economies are growing and the west is losing it’s power, it shows that the ways of the west are not as good as a lot of people thought they are. The illusion of the west as the ideal role model is finally shattered. The roles CAN be reversed. Instead of OFWs, we can have the foreigners work for us!
2. If other Asian economies are growing then so can we! The Philippines was once the Tiger Economy in Asia, and we can be that again! WE can be the role models of our neighbors. Everyone will look up to Filipinos!
3. If a national economy can rise, then so can a personal economy! A better living standard is in front of us. The opportunity to have a better life is right here in our own country!

Can you begin to imagine what this means for you and your loved ones?

That’s great news, right? So how do we begin?

The economy will rise if only the citizens make it happen. Do you remember People Power? This time it’s ECONOMIC PEOPLE POWER! If each individual Pinoy makes a real effort for the Philippine Tiger Economy then THIS WILL HAPPEN!

Start Learning about money, business, and how to improve your personal economy.

If you improve your personal economy then teach your friend, then you have changed a life.

If your friends teach their friends then you’ve improved the lives of a community.

If the community teaches other communities then you have changed a COUNTRY.

Do you have a bad habit? One that can kill you? No? Maybe you’re part of the 80% of people who don’t know they have this bad habit.

Do you have the courage to read on or will you just be a part of the 80% statistic?

What is a habit?

HABIT hab-it –noun. An acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary

Usually we do these habits unconsciously like putting your pants on with the right leg first, or flicking your long hair over your ear.

We all know that there are good habits and bad habits. The problem is, the difference between a good habit and bad habit is sometimes blurred by our dominating beliefs.

Now here’s one habit as an example: Saving money in the bank.

A lot of people (80% actually) will tell you that this is a very good habit. This is based on the belief that money in the bank is saved for a rainy day.

Now the thing about habits is, usually they are based on past experiences or the things that credible people have taught us. They are based on old information.

So why does the 20% say that saving your money in the bank is a bad habit? Several reasons.  Here’s three:

1. Inflation. The devaluation of money is faster than the interest rate given by your savings account or time deposit. The purchasing power of your money gets less every year. So you’re actually losing money.
2. Money is the blood of the economy. This is very literal. As the blood/money flows, the economy gets better. Now, for example, you cut off blood circulation to your hand. What happens? It slowly dies. The same goes for the economy. If everybody saves and stockpiles money the economy will die.
3. Ignorance. If a person just piles their money in the bank then how will they learn to handle it properly? There’s a lot more to money than just working for it and saving it. Just ask anyone with a business or attend a money workshop. An easier and more effective way of making money might be out there just waiting for you to look for it.

More knowledge about money might give you something better to look forward to than retiring at 60 and living on your savings.

Bad Habits are there usually because of ignorance or misinformation. And for a lot of people, this is the ONLY THING holding them back from success. Just ONE CHANGE OF HABIT can lead to living a life in freedom and happiness.

So do you have the courage to find out if you have bad habits that you’re unaware of? Or will you kill your potential by assuming that you know it all?

Ilang taon pa ba dapat ang hintayin bago umpisahang itayo ang magandang kinabukasan?

Maaring may mga tao na hindi nauubos ang kakabigay ng "mamaya na". Pero siguradong sigurado na mauubos ang "bukas".

Kaya bakit magsisimula ng negosyo?

Di lang napapansin ng lahat ng tao na nasa negosyo na talaga sila. Ang pinakaunang negosyo ay ang sarili. Sa araw araw na nabubuhay tayo ay kailangan natin ng pera, kaya ang iba sa atin, nagtatrabaho, ang iba, maliit na negosyo, ang iba malaking negosyo etc.

Bakit maganda magsimula ngayon? Ang negosyo ay isang "skill" at tulad ng kahit anong skill kailangan itong hasain para maging eksperto. Wala namang pinanganak na tao na magaling na magbisikleta diba? Ganoon din sa pagnenegosyo.

Kaya ngayon palang magumpisa na. Kahit maliit man yan, malaki ang maitutulong sa kinabukasan.

Evil is not just "doing bad things". It's also "ALLOWING them to happen".

Focusing on the fact that you're not doing anything bad doesn't mean that you're doing good.

What happens when we DON"T LEARN about money?

• we leave our finances to chance.
• we don't give our family or children the life that they could have.
• we tire ourselves out because our money always slips away.
• we can't help a lot of people because were so busy making ends meet.
• our economy won't improve.
• we put 80% of our life working.

What happens when we LEARN about money?

• we determine our income.
• we have the opportunity to give our family/children what they deserve.
• we can retire early.
• we can help tons of people because we have extra money.
• our economy will thrive.
• we can have the time to do what we love without worry.

So why start a business?

Business is a great way to learn about money. Not only do you learn but you also practice what you learn. The best way to learn is to actually do it. Starting a business will give you experience, education, and eventually excessive cash.

So start learning now! The sooner you do the sooner you can start a business and the better you will get in handling your finances.

Let me share an experiment for delayed gratification or THE MARSHMALLOW TEST.

The original "marshmallow test" was conducted by Stanford psychology professor Walter Mischel 40 years ago. The test was meant to measure which children could delay gratification. Follow up studies showed that children who could postpone eating a marshmallow at age 4 outpaced their peers in many areas when they were 18 years old: They scored 210 points higher in the SAT and had higher confidence, concentration, and reliability. This simple test proved to be twice as predictive of later SAT scores as IQ tests.

How does this relate to being Gadget Rich and Money Poor?

The gadgets are the marshmallows. The reason for the lack of money is because of a lack of delayed gratification. Delayed gratification means postponing happiness in the short run for the bigger benefit in the long run.

The ones who have lots of gadgets and yet little money have failed the "Marshmallow Test for Adults".

And this doesn't just apply to gadgets, but also, vacations, parties, new clothes, new cars, bigger houses etc.

Put simply some people spend now because it feels good to have new stuff - even disregarding future effects.

Imagine if this pattern of being Gadget Rich and Money Poor continues till that person retires. His life would amount to a big pile of gadgets.

What's the solution? Start building your mindset!

The first thing to build is a good mindset. This process will give discipline to practice delayed gratification among other things. Our mind is our biggest asset and our greatest investment. The way we think can unlock great opportunities for us to be great and for us to have great lives.

Start reading books like Rich Dad, Poor Dad and attending seminars like our Wealth Course Workshop.

Eventually, you can be Money Rich and you can buy all the gadgets that you want. :) Why have SOME now when you can have it ALL later?

I'd like to share this patriotic letter from a young man Reigno Jose Dilao. He is a teenager, a student, and a Filipino who has a big heart for his country. He also shares an opinion I have about generalizing.

"A letter from a teenage Filipino to the WHOLE WORLD”

As you are reading this letter, I bet that you have seen/heard about what happened earlier in our country.

Tourists were hostages of a policeman here, Rolando Mendoza. After a few hours of the horrible crime, some of the victims were dead including the hostage-taker.

I wrote this letter not just to apologize but also to let everyone know that we Filipinos are not all like Mendoza. We are loving and good-hearted people.

For so many years, our country has been standing tall and surpassing every dilemma; be it small or big. Years ago (back when I wasn’t born yet), you have watched us fight for what we think is right. We fought for the democracy of our nation.. The EDSA revolution. But that’s just one out of many.

Second. We Filipinos have been serving other countries for our families and we treat you as our own as well. With all due respect, I thank you all for giving us the trust through the years. For helping us to become what we are now.

The Philippines is more than just a group of islands. We are a nation of strong and remarkable people. A country of beauty and love known to be hospitable and well-valued. I humbly apologize for what happened tonight. No one in this world would want something like that to happen for life should be valued.

I politely ask the attention of the world. Please do not judge and mistreat us just because of what happened tonight. I have been searching the net and found terrible things. Hong Kong advices to avoid travels here, China and HK bans Filipinos and that Philippines is the worst place to go.

I can’t blame you for what you have decided but I hope that you could understand. Our country is now in a sea of problems. And I know for sure that we helped you in a way or another. Let peace and understanding reign this time.

I know that this letter will just be trash but I wish that you would understand. On behalf of the Philippine population.. WE ARE SORRY.

And I believe that in my life I will see an end to hopelessness, giving-up and suffering. And we all stand together this one time then no one will get left behind. Stand up for life. STAND UP FOR LOVE

Here's one conclusion that I got from this tragedy:

Nobody is nobody.

Our actions have an effect on the people we may not know we represent. It creates preconceptions and stereotypes.

Like this hostage taker guy. Two days ago he was a nobody to the world. Now he suddenly represents the whole country!

Why not create a positive stereotype for Filipinos and in our own way give greater glory to our country.

I'm just saying that due to this incident It's up to all of us to regain our honor and make the Filipino nationality greater.

How Are You Treated By Others?
Self-acceptance begins in infancy, with the influence of your parents and siblings and other important people.

Your own level of self-acceptance is determined largely by how well you feel you are accepted by the important people in your life.

Your attitude toward yourself is determined largely by the attitudes that you think other people have toward you. When you believe that other people think highly of you, your level of self-acceptance and self-esteem goes straight up.

The best way to build a healthy personality involves understanding yourself and your feelings.

Let the Light Shine In
This is achieved through the simple exercise of self-disclosure. For you to truly understand yourself, or to stop being troubled by things that may have happened in your past, you must be able to disclose yourself to at least one person. You have to be able to get those things off your chest. You must rid yourself of those thoughts and feelings by revealing them to someone who won't make you feel guilty or ashamed for what has happened.

Understand What Makes You Tick
The second part of personality development follows from self-disclosure, and it's called self-awareness. Only when you can disclose what you're truly thinking and feeling to someone else can you become aware of those thoughts and emotions If the other person simply listens to you without commenting or criticizing, you have the opportunity to become more aware of the person you are and why you do the things you do. You begin to develop perspective, or what the Buddhists call "detachment."

Be Honest With Yourself
Now we come to the good part. After you've gone through self-disclosure to self-awareness, you arrive at self-acceptance. You accept yourself for the person you are, with good points and bad points, with strengths and weaknesses, and with the normal frailties of a human being. When you develop the ability to stand back and look at yourself honestly, and to candidly admit to others that you may not be perfect but you're all you've got, you start to enjoy a heightened sense of self-acceptance.

Do An Inventory of Your Accomplishments
A valuable exercise for developing higher levels of self-acceptance involves doing an inventory of yourself. In doing this inventory, your job is to accentuate the positive and minimize the negative. 

Think of your unique talents and abilities. Think of your core skills, the things that you do exceptionally well that account for your success in your profession and in your personal life right now.

Think About Your Future
Think about your future possibilities and the fact that your potential is virtually unlimited. You can do what you want to do and go where you want to go. You can be the person you want to be. You can set large and small goals and make plans and move step-by-step, progressively toward their realization. There are no obstacles to what you can accomplish except the obstacles that you create in your mind.

Action Exercises
Here are three steps you can take immediately to put these ideas into action:

First, sit down with your spouse, or a good friend, and tell him or her about something that is troubling you and is still causing you unhappiness.

Second, develop perspective on your problem by standing back from it and imagining that it was happening to someone else. What advice would you give to that person?

Third, think continually about the good experiences and accomplishments you have enjoyed in the past. Remind yourself regularly that you are a pretty good person and you've done a lot of good things in your life.

Need a way to quickly access information that you might need online? Then Twitter might be your thing.

I don't often write about web applications here but my recent experiences in using Twitter is too good to mention.

When I started my twitter account I had absolutely no idea what was going on. I looked around the net and found a neat Twitter tutorial which gave me a basic idea of what I was getting into.

It turns out Twitter can serve anyone in many many ways! Here are just a few of the uses I found:

• Send updates of new blogs.
• Send updates of events.
• Get recent local and international news updates.
• Get direct tweets from some of the people I admire.
• Learn from the people I admire.
• Get daily inspirational quotes.
• Get latest updates on my interests.
• Get inspiring articles everyday.
• Spread a message quickly to your network.

I'm sure these are just a few ways to use twitter. The more useful ones are following MERALCO, GLOBE, INQUIRER, PAGASA, etc. Instant updates!

The greatest feeling though is when someone follows your tweets. And I found out that some of the people I admire do just that! Granted that these might be auto-follow, it still leaves a great feeling of connection to these people.

What better way to learn from the people you admire than to have a direct link to them!

So what's the next step? Open a twitter account then find good tweeple (twitter people, FYI) to follow.

Most of us might have come across the Law of Attraction or seen the book titled "The Secret" in National bookstore and wonder how they can use it in their lives. How do we use it to attract money, success, romance, etc in our lives?

The secret to "The Secret" is to learn how to use it properly.

Many people just attract and focus. But that's not all there is to it. It's not a magical thing where if you wish for it it will immediately come true. Get a genie if that's what you want.

The Law of Attraction has a very active process and here are some pointers to follow:

 

1) Complete this sentence: "If I had ________________, I would _______________."

It presupposes that you can have anything. Be limitless!

The problem that most people have is not that they aim too high and fail, but that they aim too low and succeed.

To maximize the Law of Attraction and your life, you have to eliminate your limiting beliefs. These limiting beliefs such as "I'm not good enough" or "I'ts too hard for me" will create a negative effect on your results and your life.

2) Think of the many ways that you CAN have what you want.

Now that you have a goal you can think of ways to reach that goal. Knowing the target then making a plan is easier than making a plan with no goal.

Know that it's really possible. Then start thinking.

After a while, you'll be surprised at the things that you'll think about. These may be things that you may normally overlook. The more that you think of ways, the more ways you'll think of or encounter. It will become a lot easier!

This is why playing Cashflow 101 is essential for those with big dreams. It makes us see that it really is possible.

 

3) Act like you have already succeeded!

You have to behave like what you want is already coming to you. Your plans are already forming which means its closer to manifesting.The positive sense of achievement that this brings is essential to keep you fueled to keep going. Make the happiness and blessings COME TO YOU!

Just as Walt Disney saw Disneyland even before it was finished, you should see what you want first.

 

4) Take Action!

This is one of the most important steps!

A plan without action is just ink on a piece of paper.

Taking action creates reality out of dreams. Things might not turn out exactly as you plan, but that's just the way it works.

“The Philippines’ most valuable export is its people.”

Think about that sentence a bit. What’s wrong with it?

For a very long time now the standard plan of a large percentage of Filipino families has been “Go to school, get good grades, go abroad, remit money back home, and retire when your kids have already grown up without you.”

I understand that most people do this for their families. A better life for the people back home in exchange for your absence. It’s a very noble thing to do and I’m proud to say that Filipinos have the capacity to sacrifice so much for their loved ones. My mom is one of these modern day heroes (hi, nay!).

But for those who are just starting out, who are just at the point where they decide “Canada or Dubai?”:

Is Going Abroad the Only Way?

Is there a great absence of opportunities in the Philippines? On the contrary..

The Philippines is currently full of problems. Nobody can doubt that. But here’s one of the many things the Create Abundance Intl Community has taught me: “Problems are Opportunities in Disguise”.

To some of the raised eyebrows from what I said, here’s why:

The greater the problem you solve, the greater you will be compensated for it. Every job, every company, every government institution etc. has been created to solve a specific set of problems.

Is there a problem of hunger in your town? Provide affordable nutritious food.

Are the kids in your neighborhood always failing? Provide tutorial services.

Find a problem, solve it. It’s that simple.

Jollibee solved the problem of serving quality pinoy tasting food quickly. Look how big Jollibee Corporation is today.

One of the main reasons Create Abundance stands today is to solve many problems and financial ignorance among them. We want to give people eyes to see the Abundance of Opportunities in the Philippines through World-Class Business Education. We don’t have to leave the Philippines for great opportunities.

This massive exodus of Filipinos to foreign countries is another problem.
