About a quarter of the way into the August 2010 issue, there's a one-page Archaeology spread on a Babylonian tablet describing a round ark in a flood myth that might be a predecessor for the Hebraic/Biblical version (sorry, can't find any links on NGM's website). </p> <p>Intriguing, but that's not what struck me. Instead, we get a chorus of "Won't somebody think of the seniors on fixed incomes?" whenever anything (usually school related) comes up that might raise property taxes.</p> <blockquote> <div><em>Sidenote: Our county income taxes are 50-100% lower than in adjacent/surrounding counties. Maybe raising them might lessen the property tax load? Wonder why that never gets addressed when the "Wont' somebody think of Grandma" crowd straps on their indignation suspenders?</em></div> </blockquote> <div>Naturally, this discussion fed into the reactionary thinking (read as: why isn't the county our idealized version of the 1950's?) of local politicians and planners, namely the heavy-handed approach to skateboarders. Perhaps a little stiff in the neck and shoulders, but nothing more. But when I stood up? Diziness. Wobbly. Washing the dishes, I started having trouble swallowing. By the time I was done with the dishes, I was trembling and sweating profusely. Influenza or some bastard sibling had taken hold. But I'll return to that in a moment.<p /> In seventh grade, my Reading teacher, a poor man's Tom Selleck (<em><a href="http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&source=imghp&q=matt+houston&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=g2&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=" target="_blank">Matt Houston</a>, perhaps?</em>), got it in his head that he was going to read us some Stephen King. He dutifully sent home permission slips. I don't know why I didn't angle to be excluded, but for some reason, I was sitting in class when he began to read about a raft and, predictably, some gore. My hyperactive imagination was off, galloping away from me.</p> <p>I should perhaps explain that when this happens, it often ends with me passed out on the floor. I could feel it coming in that class, the swirling checkerboard vortex narrowing my vision. Poor man's Selleck had given us permission to retreat to the library if things got too intense, but was I going to be the first to cave?</p> <p>But of course!</p> <p>The classroom had a door opening onto the library and I took it, feeling the eyes of 20-odd 12-year olds and Matt Houston on my back.</p> <p>I've never forgiven Stephen King for that moment of humiliation.<p /> Oh, I've seen a few movies based on his books (strangely, though I'm not comfortable with it, I can watch film gore with more ease than I can read or hear about it—less room for the imagination to run away, I suppose), but I've never read any of them, not even short stories. Confronted with a fan of King's work, I inevitably, and somewhat shamefully given that I'd never read him, dismissed him as populist schlock-horror. And I've had a fair few folks I respect fall into the category of King fans<p /> Flash forward to last summer. I'm in the local library basement at the "Bag O' Books for a Buck" blowout to clear the shelves of discarded, damaged, and plain unread tomes. I gather the usual assortment of dated travel guidebooks, genre classics, science textbooks, big volumes with strange covers, and those "probably should've read this before now" specimens. Among those I picked up? <em>The Stand.</em><p /> Of course, it's been nearly a year since it went into the "to read" pile. I kept managing to push it to the bottom whenever it crept to the top. But a month ago, after hearing some creative folks I like rave about it, I read King's <em>On Writing</em>. I wasn't blown away, but the tone he struck intrigued me. This time, when <em>The Stand</em> again hit the top of the pile, I decided to have a go.<p /> That was last night.<p /> Just as the flu struck.<p /> If you're not familiar with <em>The Stand</em>, the irony of having the flu while reading it might be lost on you, but I found it darkly humorous. You travel down the deer-corpse strewn highways of central Pennsylvania, wrapped in your cocoon of sundry metals and plastics. Naturally, you drift into a "shuffling off this mortal coil" state of mind.</p> <p>An eighteen-wheeler thunders up from behind and begins to pass at roughly 70 miles per hour, relative velocity causing him to inch past your tiny subcompact. You wonder, in an idle and completely natural way, what might happen if the driver of said monstrosity decides that he urgently needs to answer that text message pinging away on his phone. Or if his kung-fu action grip on his flimsy styrofoam coffee cup slips, splashing his baby-making apparatus with scalding java.</p> <p>WHAM!</p> <p>Game over.</p> <p>What manner of short is there in our risk assessment circuitry that has convinced us that this is okay? They looked swept or combed, and I saw a mother at the bus stop trying to figure out what my daughter and I kept looking at above her house. Finally, my daughter made a remark about the clouds that let her in on our rather obvious secret. Would I have noticed those clouds without her? I'd like to think I might have, but I do wonder. When is it, exactly, that we stop looking to the heavens and focus on the rutted track beneath our feet? But upon closer inspection, I found it was feasting on the foliage. A couple of minutes of furious googling later, I'd identified the invader as the final larval stage of a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyalophora_cecropia">cecropia moth</a> caterpillar, the largest moth in North America. Apparently they're pretty common, but it's the first time I've ever seen one.<p /> In the larval stage.<p />Turns out that little guy (though 4-5 inch caterpillars might not fall into the "little" category) provided the answer to a question I had forgotten to ask of the internet hive mind. A couple of weeks ago I found the corpse of a massive (6 inch wingspan) moth in my daughter's flower garden.
