Let's face it. When there is a new thing in town we all want try it. Well I do ;-) So when I heard of <a href="http://turntable.fm/" title="turntable.fm website" target="_blank">turntable.fm</a> I was very interested to try it out. Being a DJ and always eager to discover music I thought the idea was quite interesting. At the moment, to sign on, you are required to have a Facebook friend already using it which I did. I loved the concept of having head bopping peeps with DJs playing tunes. Once in, all you have to do is choose your avatar and name and find a room that interests you. And there you go, you are part of the crowd. You can then decide if you like the track or not by clicking on "Lame" or "Awesome". This will add points to the DJ's score. You can also become a fan of the DJ which means that next time she/he plays you will be notified.&nbsp;</p> <p>If you want to DJ yourself, you have to click on a free turntable - for busy rooms, you have to be quick on the click and it can take some time. Although the idea of having 5 DJs playing is cool for listeners, it can be time consuming for DJs because each one has their turn to play one song. Having 5 DJs playing and on average 5 minutes per track, that means it takes at least 20 minutes before you can play your track. Of course, if you DJ in rooms that only have 2 DJs, I think it would be more interesting. DJing could be good for testing out some new tracks you or others have produced but you will have to be armed with patience as it is hard to get to a turntable on busy rooms. One thing I really like was the interaction between users. Anyone can chat about what they are listening to.</p> <p>How the track listing you want to play works is that you add them to your DJ queue. And next time it's your turn to play, the top track on your DJ queue will play. Better have your top track ready! When I played, I found myself wishing that I could create different track lists. I kept changing the tracks queue depending of what the previous DJ was playing, I kind of wanted to keep the same mood or have a musical flow that fitted. Of course, this is my personal opinion. It might be different for other DJs. With your points that you accumulate while DJing, you can change your avatar. More points you get, the bigger and different your avatar can become.</p> <p>If you want, you can create your own room. You are then the moderator. You can invite DJs to play. Then, people might show up in your room. It might take time. You need to get DJs that have fans and most likely DJs would prefer to play in rooms that have people in - but you can build it up.</p> <p>The application is simple to use and eye catching. &nbsp;These head bopping characters are really funny. A great app to discover music. It is on a beta phase so only a limited amount of users can be invited. I know a few guys that are disappointed about not being able to try it out. Is it creating a hype? I wonder.</p> <p>Nonetheless, I will follow closely and I'm quite curious to see what they will do next.</p> <p>Has anyone tried it and would like to comment? The Karman Line live back in November 2010 and featured them on my <a href="http://limeblog.posterous.com/fff-alecia-chakour-the-osrah-the-simonsound-t" title="Follow Friday Feature with Alecia Chakour, The Simonsound &amp; The Karman Line" target="_blank">Follow Friday blog</a>. When I heard that they were releasing an EP, I couldn't wait to listen to it. I wasn't disappointed. Their synchronicity is remarkable. They are guiding the listener to great depth and true aural experience of well maneuvered mixed synths, pads and sound effects. This album has to be listened to on big speakers. The CD is for sale on <a href="http://thekarmanline.bandcamp.com/" title="The Karman Line Bandcamp Page" target="_blank">Bandcamp</a>. Also available is a digital download - no minimal amount required but give them a few quid. It is worth it.</p> <p><iframe src="http://bandcamp.com/EmbeddedPlayer/v=2/album=1739165180/size=grande/bgcol=FFFFFF/linkcol=4285BB/" frameborder="0"><a href="http://thekarmanline.bandcamp.com/album/tklep01">TKLEP01 by The Karman Line</a></iframe></p> <p>Here are a few questions I've asked them:</p> <p><strong>How did The Karman Line started?</strong><br /> We met in college, both of us were doing Computer Science. We seemed to like the same music and started talking about doing some producing together. Jack was in a band at the time and when they split up we decided to give it a go. The band went through many name and style changes over the years, but we finally seem to have a sound we're both comfortable with, so the time is right to release an EP.</p> <p><strong>What is the story behind the name?</strong><br /> The Karman Line is a scientific term - it's the boarder between the Earth's atmosphere and space. When someone passes this line, they are officially an astronaut. It doesnt really have any significant meaning to us, other than a nerdy interest in astrophysics, although we do joke about it being a drug reference. Just say no kids.</p> <p><strong>Do you always produce your music together in one studio or you do some work separately?</strong><br /> We work seperately. Technology has made it really easy to collaborate with people without actually physically being in the same place. We send tracks and stuff back and forth over email. There have been a couple of times where we've sat together to write stuff, but it tends to get muddled. Playing live is different though - we do get together before gigs and put it all together. Thats probably what we enjoy the most, especially when we have the visuals up and running.</p> <p><strong>Who's good at what in the creative process?</strong><br /> I wouldnt say either of us are better at anything. Jack has a better ear for harmony and melody and I prefer to work with the rythym side of things, but its definitely even as to who does what. When gigging, Im using Ableton and Jack is playing parts of tracks live. I also control the visuals and fire them off in time with the music.</p> <p><strong>Who else would you like to collaborate with?</strong><br /> We've done a couple of tracks with the lads from New Mind Line which we havent done anything with as yet, even though they're really good tracks. We'd definitely like to do something with them again, their lead singer Jai has one of the best voices in Cork. We're also looking to do a track with Debbie Hayes, who sings with the Electric Foxx. There's a plethora of producers around Cork at the moment who we'd love to work with; Coherx, Laserface, Aodhgan, but everyone is doing their own thing, so it's hard.</p> <p><strong>Any groups you particularly like?</strong><br /> At the moment we're listening to a lot of more glitchy hip hop stuff like Baths, Jamie XX, Dorian Concept and Hudson Mohawke. We listen to a lot of alt rock bands like Grizzly Bear, TV on the Radio, Real Estate - mostly hipster American stuff that gets frowned upon because of the people associated with it. People like The Chemical brothers were obviously a band we grew up with and continue to influence us, as is Orbital, Leftfield, FSOL, Boards Of Canada. We also both have an unhealthy obsession with Radiohead and the Beatles. Im listening to a guy called Decentfolk from Cork that's playing the next Modulation right now and its quality stuff.</p> <p><strong>What is next for The Karman Line? Do you have plans to play at music festivals and touring this summer?</strong><br /> We're playing Indiependence again this year - hopefully on a bigger stage late on in the evening. There's also talk of doing something for Kinsale arts week and the Cork Midsummer Festival. It's not often you get invited to Texas</p> <p><strong>How did they idea of a Big Band came about? </strong><br /> It developed slowly to be honest. I started off inviting Conor (double bass) and Simon (drums) to help me perform some of my tracks on stage. As the gigs started to get a bit bigger, I started to add in various things I was into. I wanted each show to be bigger and better. I simply kept adding elements/sections that I like. I want the big band to evolve constantly so I'm always making changes.</p> <p><strong>Being an 11 piece orchestra, getting everyone together to rehearse must be challenging? </strong><br /> You don't know the half of it! I've know of the SXSW as one of the best showcase festival in the world. Also, Austin is a city I always wanted to visit.</p> <p><strong>What is the story behind your band name R.S.A.G.?</strong><br /> R.S.A.G. is an acronym for Rarely Seen Above Ground. Back in 1997 with a friend, John Daly, I started my first solo recordings. We both had four track recorders. So, we joined them up for the maximum amount of tracks. We took our time experimenting with sounds and techniques. It was very creative and fun. Of course some friends were involved in the process. DJ Cool C aka Cormac Cullinan and Andy Hart put down some samples. John Daly played some bass and Cello. It really was the beginning of what I know I wanted to do with the rest of life. Anyway, another friend Gareth Swenney who played bass in a band called Gout was also around for some of those sessions and he turned to me one night after hearing the recordings for the first time and said, " Jeremy, your rarely seen above ground, you know that?"</p> <p><strong>What part, if any, has social media played in the progress of your career?</strong><br /> Social Media has a played a vital part in my career. Bloggers are after really starting to put bands and artists out there. Whether it's labels or punters who are turned on to new music by this developing social media. Of course TV, radio and print are still very effective but bands and artists who can't afford PR and especially the cost of promoting an album. In this age of bad CD sales and a lack of money bands and artists have to get more creative. Not just in music but getting more of a visual presents on this vast social network we have available to us.</p> <p><strong>What's next for you after SXSW?</strong><br /> After SXSW I will be doing more shows with the summer season approaching in Ireland, Europe and hopefully America. I'm also playing drums with a band from Paris called Bot'ox. How does that feel?</strong><br /> Feels great...To be honest last year was a little stressful as Elis from the band landed himself in hostipal days before we were due to fly over so we had to get our good friend James from <a href="http://soundcloud.com/3epkano" title="3epkana SoundCloud Page" target="_blank">3epkano</a> to step in. We had fun but I think our confidence was down a little. This time we will bring some form of noise.</p> <p><strong>Why did you choose to record your album in Montreal at Hotel2Tango?</strong><br /> We love Canada first and foremost. Also we just felt it would be nice to record outside Ireland in a studio that had amazing equipment and that recorded on tape. Hotel2tango has a lovely ethos and it was just a pleasure to be there for 2 weeks. A very happy time for us and we hope to return.</p> <p><strong>You seem to have enjoyed recording the album "It Goes, It Goes (Forever &amp; Ever)". What is your most memorable part?</strong><br /> I think once we'd settled in and we got familiar with the staff in there and their dogs. Each night it was nice to open a beer or two while we listened back to that day's work. Walking home we'd be surprised at how good the songs were sounding but maybe that was the beer talking.</p> <p><strong>You have released your album on CD and vinyl. Why on vinyl?</strong><br /> Things have changed dramatically in the last few years with the whole downloading thing. We admire the format very much...it sounds fantastic and having the artwork blown up looks great but mainly it's a very rewarding thing to own I guess. Personally I find cds very annoying and flimsy. We arranged the record in advance to be divided into three parts to fit on three sides of vinyl. The fourth has the lyrics etched onto it. Listening to their work is very enjoyable and you want to hear how the story develops. I got an email from Podge at about 10pm the night we found out and I couldn't believe it! I've never been to America at all so I'm excited just to even go over there and experience the thing as a whole and then having gigs and having new people listen to our music on top of that is excellent!</p> <p><strong>What is the story behind your band name?Why Ham Sandwich?</strong><br /> It just came about in practice. We were talking about band names and it came up and we all kinda liked it just for the fact it was silly and it would be remembered. We got a lot of stick at the start,people telling us to change it but we never did. And now I think people realise its just a name and you can't judge a book by its cover and all that!</p> <p><strong>How the music video idea "Ants" came about? </strong><br /> When we had the album done and dusted we gave a copy to our friend Marc Corrigan who had previously done our video for Broken Glass. He came back to us then after listening saying he had an idea for Ants. We thought it would be perfect as it was the next single we were releasing. So he made us a 10 second clip of what it was going to look like and everyone loved it! And then when we put it on youtube the hits just went up and up! It was mental!</p> <p><strong>What part, if any, has social media played in the progress of your career? </strong> <br /> Well at the start MySpace was a huge help to us and any band really. You could put songs, pictures, blogs, all in the one place without having to get a website built up really. It was so handy. Now its Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. They've made Myspace too complicated that everyone has moved on to other places I think. Tumblr is great for blogs and it looks great too. Twitter is brilliant for just small little bit of info you want to put out there and Facebook it great for everything really. I think its very important as a band to have some sort of internet presence definetly. He is known for giving passionate live performances with intemperance and abandonment. His latest album "TMS &amp; The Baptists" was made with the punk rock legend and former member of <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/humanzi/24077561823" title="Humanzi Facebook page" target="_blank">Humanzi</a>, Tom Schwoll. However not all his work is as political as his latest single "We Want Blood' which coincided with the European markets crisis and could have not been more current. His music is sharp and filled with personal quick-witted life stories. Austin is amazing we can't wait.</p> <p><strong>Do you think digital gives the artists more control and power over their own promotion as oppose to depending on record labels?</strong><br /> I think most artists would opt to be on a label if they had the choice. Even if only for the prestige or the feeling of acceptance. We have our own label an we court a couple of other small labels this would not be possible if not for the digital age of the music industry so yeah. It's important if you think about it. But I tend not to think much about businss if I can. Then, denial. Then, acceptance. Then, dancing. Then, I ate a Toblerone.</p> <p><strong>2010 has been an amazing year for you. What was the most memorable moment?</strong><br /> Making friends with the lovely people at Sargent House...Being in Japan again, playing alongside Mike Watt...lots of groovy stuff. This year was bizarrely good. Almost suspiciously good. The Toblerone is pretty high up on the list too.</p> <p><strong>You are releasing your album in North America on March 15th, 2011. What do you hope for?</strong><br /> World peace and a new Syndicate game.</p> <p><strong>What is next for you after SXSW?</strong><br /> Next for us is writing a new album and then probably getting back to Japan for a bit. But seriously... we're really chuffed and can't wait.</p> <p><strong>In the music industry, people are saying that "Rock is dead". What do you think of that?</strong><br /> It sounds like the kind of lazy, ignorant and redundant marketing slogan that you might hear in a corpoate board meeting. All music lives in the hearts of the people it affects and only dies when its traditions are no longer carried on. Rock music and its many interpretations are very much alive. A sphincter says what??</p> <p><strong>What part, if any, has social media played in the progress of your career?</strong><br /> Viral and social networking, together with virtual magazines and blogging are now inherent parts of any working and touring band, irrespective of how successful or well known they are. You can see for yourself how seriously the major labels are taking this approach by clicking on any music site the net has to offer. The whole industry is now geared around television, web exposure and concerts, and social media is the glue that bonds these together. Yawn!</p> <p><strong>When are you going back into the studio for your second album and what should we expect?</strong><br /> We're just finishing off the second album this week. It should be out in April and we're really happy with it. SXSW is something we've wanted to do for ages. we can't wait. lots of our favourite irish bands are heading over too, so it will be nice to experience the festival with them. I'm looking forward to waking up with Lydia from Sweet Jane in a fed-ex truck and watching homeland security take care of Adabesi&nbsp;Shank.</p> <p><strong>What made you decide to work with Stephen Street (The Smiths &amp; Blur) and how was it?</strong><br /> Stephen is great. the record is out of the oven, but its tastes better when you let it cool. we cooked it at gas mark 5 for a whole year. obviously with his history with the two above mentioned bands and many others, we were quite daunted at the thoughts of working with him but it was great. we are really happy with how the record is sounding, and are excited for people to hear it.</p> <p><strong>Which influence does each of you have that the rest of the band don't share and where's the common ground?</strong><br /> Well, Greg gets really car sick, Brian has&nbsp;emetophobia, and when this&nbsp;emetophobia takes hold it takes a pop at his diggie system and mick doesn't like driving with the smell of shit in the car so he never drives anywhere. the common ground must be that we are all in the car.</p> <p><strong>What part, if any, has social media played in the progress of your career?</strong><br /> Well, obviously the Internet is as much a part of most peoples lives now as eating breakfast and having a pint. So i guess we use&nbsp;&nbsp;it like any other band, pushing to get heard any way we can, without leaving our dignity with the paper trail. The guys dedicate a lot to Rams and I'm always really chuffed to tell them about exciting live prospects. I was mostly thinking about the traveling element of it. There was also a sense of artistic achievement, being invited to SXSW.</p> <p><strong>You have chosen your band name based on 1950's product designer Dieter Rams. Why is that?</strong><br /> I love Dieter's timelessness and his ethical approach. He was totally relevant to his time but, outside of the fact that there's not such a huge demand for pocket radios, I don't think his stuff will ever date. I'd like to create music like that. There's also the thing about the pocket radio looking like an iPod - when I started Rams' a couple of years ago, we were kind of in an iPod era. My music usually begins with me in a studio, overdubbing which relates in some way to the way people listen to music now. The way people live, use products and listen to music is changing but the core principles of design or art will always be the same. I like this idea, and Dieter's pocket radio story illustrates it well for me.</p> <p><strong>Which came first for you, being a pianist or a drummer?</strong><br /> Drums came first. I played kit with a few different bands and was involved in orchestras and stuff when I was a bit younger. I mostly play piano now but I'm still more drummer than pianist, I think. I've been told I play the piano like a drummer... Whenever possible, I still play drums in a band called <a href="http://www.myspace.com/silhouetteofficial" title="Silhouette Official Website" target="_blank">Silhouette</a>. I left the band I was drumming in, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/mojofuryband" title="Mojo Fury Official Website" target="_blank">Mojofury</a>, about two years ago to focus on Rams. The album I recorded with them will be released around the same time as SXSW. It's fun to see that kicking off while doing this.</p> <p><strong>What's next for you after SXSW?</strong><br /> The broad plan is to keep working on the album and start fine tuning it. How does that feel? </strong><br />Feels good. Its nice to asked back again. The buzz in Austin for the 4 days of the festival is quite surreal.<br /> We played a shit load of shows there last year , like 10 or so. Thats the big thing, your only there for 4 days do make it count. Which we will again this year.</p> <p><strong>This year, rock songs in the charts fell to their lowest in 50 years. What do you think of that?</strong><br /> Don't really care. It don't bother us. The charts have always been primarily filled with pop music. It is what it Is.</p> <p><strong>More and more bands seem to record in a vintage aka old school way. You did it with your debut album. Why was that?</strong><br /> Because its Natural. We as 3 dudes make one noise. the records we all loved were recorded by A BAND together in a room . That process had been lost as an artform as far as we were concerned. It was too easy for any old shit to record with protools. And as a result a lot of records ended up sterile and lifeless. By us taking our route, our record definitely has soul.</p> <p><strong>What part, if any, has social media played in the progress of your career?</strong><br /> Facebook is very Important tool for keeping our fans Informed. Twitter even more so. We started using Myspace, which in its day was excellent. What part social media as played in the progress of your career?</strong><br /> We were simultaneously blogged about here &amp; abroad pretty much out of nowhere towards the end of last year &amp; I'd have to say those blogs are entirely responsible for our name getting out past my front door. Because of bloggers like MP3Hugger, Nialler9 &amp; No Fear Of Pop among others (Pasta Primavera, Unholy Rhythms, No Modest Bear, so many amazing blogs) our tracks are being listened to by people around the world, I'm not sure that could have happened quite so quickly or easily in the days before blogging &amp; file-sharing to be honest... We're extremely grateful for the way things have gone...</p> <p><strong>We all know that physical music sales are declining. And yet you still printed your CD with hand-made packaging. What value do you place on producing a physical product in today's music market?</strong><br />From my own experience of (my) constantly changing music consumption I know that I personally tend to buy only limited edition packages, whether it's a cassette, a 7" or a handmade CD package. The idea of doing our own limited edition package was as much in line with what Delphi wanted to do as the general aesthetic we'd like associated with our releases. Music lovers want something interesting &amp; hopefully we came close with the handmade package. All of the packages were designed, printed, cut, scored, folded &amp; put together by myself &amp; Alexis from Delphi &amp; we're doing the same with the remix EP coming out March 11th (Remixes by Kohwi, Keep Shelly In Athens, Strands &amp; The Holy Roman Army). The remix package was designed by Alan &amp; Adrien from 'And Maps And Plans' &amp; it's a really really beautiful piece of work.
