"If we do not bond with God through the gospel, then we will bond to something else - something that promises to do for us what only the gospel can do. We hold to idols so tightly, and return to them so readily, because they appear to do the same thing for us that the gospel does. They become part of us in the same way that our heavenly Father should be part of us. Thus, when called to give up an idol, it feels as if we amputate a limb." - Gospel Transformation, pg. 63

"There are two dangers we face when we watch the news. The first is that we feel ourselves responsible to do something about all that we now know. We take on the role of saviour and try to sort out the world. And because we cannot do everything we end feeling guilty. We need to trust God. He is the saviour and he is Lord. We can entrust the world to him through prayer.

But the second danger is passivity and modern media increasingly push us in this direction. We sit there being entertained, watching the news as if it were a disaster movie or crime show. Or maybe we tweet our sympathies and then go back to the problem of which ice cream flavour to chose. We cannot do everything, but we can do something."

- Tim Chester

"A common objection to the gospel today is that Christians are hypocrites. Skeptics don't mind when they see Christians sinning. They do mind when they see Christians concealing their sins. We'll see more repentance among skeptics when the skeptics see more repentance among us. Let's have a spirit of confession, because Jesus is the Friend of sinners. He did not come to call the righteous but only sinners.
When we converted to Christ, what were we saying? We were saying, 'I’ve been completely wrong about everything all my life.' But then? Too often, Christians are never wrong again!
But the Bible says, 'The sacrifices pleasing to God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise' (Ps 51:17). Jesus said, 'Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven' (Matt 5:3). Jesus taught us to pray, 'Forgive us our debts” (Matt 6:12). He said to the church in Laodicea, 'You say, I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind and naked' (Rev 3:17). Those Christians looked at themselves and all they could see was their strengths. But the Lord said to them, 'Those whom I love, I correct and discipline, so be zealous and repent' (Rev 3:19). Repent of what? Repent of saying, 'I need nothing.'
We live by spiritual breathing--exhaling the CO2 of our sins and inhaling the oxygen of the gospel.

Great post by Josh Reich, Pastor of Revolution Church (Tucson, AZ):

One of the reasons many people don’t live on mission as a follower of Jesus is time. Every Christian would agree, or should agree, that we are called to live on mission. That we are to reach the planet and disciple all people. Yet, most studies show that only 2% of Christians share their faith and live on mission.

Why? We have lost the idea of doing everyday, ordinary things with gospel intentionality. We see and often make living on mission an extra thing we do on top of everything else we do.

Here are some great questions taken from Missional Community Life by Tim Chester to think through how to do everyday, ordinary things with gospel intentionality and to live on mission in all of life:

List all the activities – including the mundane – that make up your normal:

Daily routine (for example, travelling to work, eating meals, chores, walking the dog, playing with the children).

Weekly routine (for example, grocery shopping, watching favorite TV programs, getting exercise).

Monthly routine (for example, gardening, getting a haircut, going to the cinema).

For each activity, ask whether you could add a:

Community component – involving another member of your faith community.

Missional component – involving an unbeliever.

Gospel component – talking about Jesus.

Source: http://missionalthoughts.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/gospel-intentionality-everyday/

One could look at this two ways: 1) it’s the age most people retire, or 2) it’s the age Winston Churchill became Prime Minister and led England and the Western World to victory over Hitler’s aggression. I find Churchill much more inspiring than retirement."

I am a long ways from retirement (if such a thing will exist in 30-40 years), but I found this inspiring.

"Self-sacrifice brought Christ into the world. And self-sacrifice will lead us, his followers, not away from but into the midst of men. Wherever men suffer we will be there to comfort. Wherever men strive, there will we be to help. Wherever men fail, there will we be to uplift. Wherever men succeed, there will we be to rejoice. Self-sacrifice means not indifference to our times and our fellows: it means absorption in them. In means forgetfulness of self in others. It means entering into every man's hopes and fears, longings and despairs: it means manysidedness of spirit, multiform activity, multiplicity of sympathies. It means richness of development. It means that not that we should live one life, but a thousand lives,--binding ourselves to a thousand souls by the filaments of so loving a sympathy that their lives become ours." - B.B. Warfield, "Imitating The Incarnation"

"People do not drift toward holiness. Apart from grace-driven effort, people do not gravitate toward godliness, prayer, obedience to Scripture, faith, and delight in the Lord. We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch toward prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated." —D.A.
