Burton Launches 'Now Boarding' on Facebook

Attention in the terminal. BurtonSnowboards is stoked to announce that they are ‘Now Boarding’ riders, road trippers, adventurers, drifters and jet setters, for the chance to win one of three mystery trips this winter, or a weekly giveaway of a travel bag packed with Burton goods.

Hosted entirely on Burton’s Facebook page, ‘Now Boarding’ is a brand new contest-based campaign inspired by the nomadic and spontaneous travel culture rooted in snowboarding. With three epic trips up for grabs, ‘Now Boarding’ takes Facebook visitors through a series of cool and fun steps where they virtually pack their bags from a selection of Burton men’s and women’s products, create their boarding passes, and get ready to be boarded for thenext giveaway. And in true snowboarding style, winners must be ready to dropeverything and get on the road, as Burton will be sending them on their waywith just a few days notice.

Each all-expense-paid trip is unveiled through a series of video clues on Facebook featuring Burton’s own team riders such as John Jackson, Marko Grilc, Charles Reid and Mark Sollors. By the final clue, the destination isrevealed, a winner is chosen and they will be on their way within the week. And if that wasn’t enough, all entrants will be invited to bring their crew on the trip if they win. It’s super easy, they just add the names of two of their Facebook friends to their own entries when registering, and boarding passes are immediately created for the whole squad.

And beyond winning one of the trips, each entrant is also eligible to win one of 12 weekly bag prize giveaways, which include a Burton Wheelie Flight Deck travel bag packed with the Burton items they selected when entering ‘Now Boarding’. Everyone can pack up to two bags per day to have the best chance at winning.

Burton Announces New Mountain Festivals Around the US

For the first time ever, Burton is launching the Burton Mountain Festival tour, a completely new experience that offers riders a full day of FREE on-snow entertainment, including Burton 2012 product demos, live music, sponsor giveaways, mini parks for the smallest snowboarders and amateur snowboard contests at select stops. Presented by MINI, the Burton Mountain Festival kicks off on December 30th at Copper Mountain and then will travel on to nine additional resorts around the US, which are all listed below.

Burton Mountain Festival stops will include up to four key elements: Burton Test Ride, Riglet Parks, Pro-Test and live music for an entire day of good times. And while each festival stop will be unique, the foundation of the festival is the Burton Test Ride program, which will be at all 10 stops. Test Ride is where virtually the entire 2012 Burton hardgoods line will be on tap for riders to test at absolutely no charge. Riders can try out a variety of boards, boots and bindings to get a feel for their ultimate set-up.

In addition to Test Ride, six of the Burton Mountain Festival stops (noted with an asterisk above) will have a Pro-Test event, which is an amateur snowboard competition for men and women featuring halfpipe and slopestyle contests that will award a total of $7000 at each stop. At every Burton Pro-Test event, riders can also win four wildcard spots to compete in the US Open pre-qualifiers, and all Pro-Test events are 4Star TTR World Snowboard Tour events. Bonfire/Salomon Parent Amer Sports Acquires Nikita Clothing

Amer Sports is acquiring Nikita (www.nikitaclothing.com), a snowboarding inspired action sports apparel brand, which focuses on female consumers. Annual net sales of Nikita are approximately EUR 8 million.

Oakley Announces Progression Sessions for 2012

Oakley is pleased to announce the return of the Oakley Progression Session series – two-day ski and snowboard camps for women looking to hone their skills on the mountain. With four camps located throughout North America slotted for 2012, including a new stop in Canada, each will be led by professional coaches and Oakley athletes who are ready to share the lowdown on how to ride like they do. The four camps will take place at top resorts during the months of February and March 2012, and range in price from $189 to $300 depending on the location.

“We had an overwhelming response to the 2011 Oakley Progression Session series,” said Oakley Women’s Brand Manager Jenny Earnshaw. “The positive energy and progression of skill that emerged at each event not only affected the campers, but also Oakley athletes and staff. From watching girls ride in trash bags in the freezing rain at Loon until the lifts closed, to not one no-show during blizzard conditions at Northstar, to having girls road trip from New Hampshire to Colorado to attend a second session, we knew we had something special. Each and every girl that attended the camps absolutely killed it, taking their skills to the next level, and having a blast at the same time. Oakley, along with its partners, is very excited to bring this experience back with the 2012 Oakley Progression Session series.”

The Oakley Progression Sessions will kick off at Le Massif de Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada, Feb. 18-19 with Marie-France Roy, Kaya Turski, Kim Lamarre and Dom Vallee coaching the event. The second stop will hit Copper Mountain, Colorado, March 3-4 with coaches Jenny Jones, Chanelle Sladics and Kristi Leskinen. Near Oakley’s home base in California, the third stop will take place at Mammoth Mountain, Calif., March 17-18 with Marie-France Roy, Grete Eliassen and Chanelle Sladics. Finally, the mountain on the east coast that started it all with their “Droppin In” camp will get a piece of the action March 24-25 at Loon Mountain, NH with Gretchen Bleiler, Ellery Hollingsworth, Silvia Mittemuller, Chanelle Sladics and Kristi Leskinen.

The one-on-one instruction and all-female environment ensure a relaxed and unintimidating way to try new skills, tricks, jumps and rails specifically suited to each “camper.” In addition to on-snow professional instruction, each Progression Session package will also include two day lift tickets, lunch on both days, morning yoga and stretching, video assessment, an array of Oakley goggles and products to try, event tee, gift bag, discounted lodging (at participating resorts), Saturday après party and Sunday awards ceremony. Since the early days of Burton Snowboards, women have always helped shape the team, the products and the company. Today marks another milestone with the launch of burtongirls.com, Burton’s first online community dedicated to women and the snowboard lifestyle.

“With burtongirls.com we wanted to create a forum where girls could discover fun, unique and diverse content around the lifestyle and culture of our sport,” stated Donna Carpenter, President of Burton. “There are so many cool aspects to our lifestyle – from traveling and meeting people all over the world, getting to ride the best mountains on the planet and working with the best snowboarders, and burtongirls.com reflects all of that.”

The freshly launched burtongirls.com website features five content sections, chosen to represent all of the facets of the true Burton girl lifestyle. The first of course is ‘Snowboarding’, followed by ‘Travel’, ‘Health & Beauty’, ‘Style & Culture’ and ‘Après’. And contributing to all of this content is a group of more than 30 female contributors, all who share a love for what our lifestyle is all about.

Gatorade Free Flow Tour Announces 2012 Schedule

PRESS RELEASE - The Gatorade Free Flow Tour today announced the complete schedule for the 2012 winter season. In its third year, the Tour offers up-and-coming amateur snowboard athletes 21 and under the chance to earn a pre-qualified spot in next season’s Winter Dew Tour (2012-13). Leading with slope and pipe contests at Vail Resort in Vail, Colo., the circuit will hit 8 resorts for a total of 28 contests. “The 2012 Winter Gatorade Free Flow Tour has one of the strongest resort lineups in the history of the Tour. Utilizing the top parks and pipes in the country, this year’s Tour will undoubtedly push the up and coming competitors to a new level,” said Gatorade action sports team manager, Carla Hess. “We look forward to this season’s competition and finding who will be the next to go from ‘Flow to Pro’.”

The Gatorade Free Flow Tour will showcase the top amateur winter athletes competing in snowboarding slopestyle and superpipe. Snowboarding disciplines will have separate competitions for men and women.

The 2012 schedule includes resorts spanning the United States – the East (2) and West Coasts (3) and the Rocky (3) Mountains. The Tour will host 12 superpipe and 16 slopestyle contests. The world’s best female snowboarders return to Saalbach Hinterglemm, Austria: on Friday February 10th, 2012, for the ROXY SNOW PRO to be held at the Nightpark Saalbach Hinterglemm! This 5-star TTR slopestyle event will showcase the women’s world snowboarding talent and skills in front of an inspired crowd. Top-notch riders like Torah Bright (AUS), Kjersti Buaas (NOR), Aimee Fuller (GBR) and Cheryl Maas (NED) will fight for the US$ 25,000 prize-purse. The finals of this thrilling competition will be held at night under a floodlit course. Following the prize-giving, the celebrations will continue with all the Pro’s at a live concert and a closing party in to the early hours!

ROXY SNOW PRO is a unique women-only event with the snow park and the contest format exactly meeting the demands of female snowboarders. The event will begin with an open qualification on Friday morning where 30 riders will fight for their place in the main session. The main session with 25 riders, including the qualified amateurs and seeded pros, will be held on Friday afternoon. The 10 best riders will advance to the finals on Friday night.

Quiksilver Pro Contest On, Festival Off

Despite Hurricane Irene's best efforts, the contest will go on for the Quiksilver Pro in Long Beach, NY. Organizers announced that the surfing competition will be held from September 4th-September 15th. However, Irene hit Long Beach hard which have forced the Quiksilver Pro to cancel the festival and concerts that were part of the event.

Here is part of the statement we received from the Quiksilver Pro.

The situation has been changing daily, and we recognize that City resources are focused on hurricane restoration and clean up as first priority. In that context, we have been informed by the City that the festival and music components of the event are no longer achievable.

The Quiksilver Pro NY is first and foremost about the surf contest and Long Beach has an incredible surfing tradition and spirit. We are committed to holding the ASP tour event at Long Beach so that together we can promote the sport by bringing together the best surfers in the world to this terrific community.
