HP makes a credible case for Vista as highly usable even in an ultralight format. The HP Pavilion tx1000 battery (available for purchase February 28) crams a full suite of multimedia features and even limited Tablet capabilities into an attractive 4.2-pound notebook, complete with an optical drive. It's not the fastest ultraportable on the block, but you get a lot for your money.

Borrowing from the look and feel of HP's Pavilion dv series, the black-and-silver tx1000 is certainly a striking ultraportable. The same Imprint finish is present, which consists of subtle wave patterns on the casing, and the glowing blue multimedia buttons above the keyboard further contribute to the futuristic-chic aesthetic. We wish the buttons themselves were a bit larger, though.

The 6-cell Lithium-Ion battery extended life battery performance was shockingly good, it lasted for about 4.5 hours in balanced (normal) power mode. In addition to this battery, the model we tested included a 4-cell battery that lasted for about 3 hours. Now if you go for this option of carrying two batteries around you are good to go pretty much all-day. This is great for mobile users and it only took an hour to fully recharge the 6-cell battery, so not much downtime. The Pavilion tx1000 battery also offers a power saver mode for light work or a high performance mode for that busy day. The optical bay is swappable with different optical drives, but it is not setup to house a secondary battery.

The integrated Realtek audio and integrated Altec Lansing stereo speakers provide acceptable sound quality for most games, movies, and applications. The sound suffers from lack of bass and less than stellar mid-range vocals, but provides enough clarity and volume for general use. The two speakers are attached to the display and rotate with the screen, which is a nice touch to help direct the sound toward you whenever the screen is rotated. Another nice touch is the dual headphone jacks, which allows two people to both watch and listen to a movie without having to share ear buds.

The integrated webcam is a handy feature that allows you to do video-conferencing or capture still images without having to attach an external device. The resulting video clips and images from the webcam were clear and accurately colored. As with any webcam, low lighting conditions cause problems and result in low-quality images.

The fingerprint reader works well and is useful for logging onto the computer and websites without having to remember multiple passwords. The fingerprint scanning software took a bit more time to complete than I would have liked, as HP tx1000 battery requires fingerprints from multiple fingers on each hand and running your finger across the scanner too quickly results in an invalid scan. I purchased an HP Pavilion dv9500. In April 2008 the Nvidia 8600M inside it failed and HP replaced it under warranty.Now,my 2nd Nvidia 8600M GS has failed. Symptoms include artifacts, texture corruption in 3D apps, and a complete and total system lock up which can only be fixed via a hard reboot. Artifacts persist unless I leave the laptop off for an around 20 minutes, at which point I can boot it into safe mode without fear of locking up. I have already reinstalled hp pavilion dv9500 battery and installed the latest drivers for the video card. I spoke with (edit: woops, HP, not Nvidia) and they want me to pay $400 for a new motherboard and 8600M GS. I've seen on multiple sites* that there is a major problem with the 8600M GS failure rate.

This is the second time I have seen a hp pavillion dv9500 laptop with something screwed up. First one was a case where all of a sudden the screen would just not show up anything. nothing. not even if you hooked itup to a second monitor. but it powered on, and you could hear it. ended up getting it diagnosed and got told that the motherboard needed to be replaced, it cost about $500. Now i have one, that when you boot hp pavillion dv9500 series battery up to start windows normally, after about 3 minutes, all of a sudden the screen goes bad, it turns into a bunch of repeating squares ind just stays stuck like that until you power it off. I do not really know what to make of it. I dont know if i want to just go ahead and try to reformat it, or if there is some other hardware component that is likely causing this, or what it is that i should do. Any advice on what to check, what to look for? It seems to boot into safe mode fine... the screen looks completely fine, everything looks totall normal, and then all of the sudden it goes to scribbled lines of squares.

Is there any word of dell 310-9080 battery doing something similar? I attempted to bring the issue up with the technician I spoke with but she ignored it. I spoke with her for around an hour and got nowhere. Any advice any of you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

PROBLEM SOLVED
Got same problem all of a sudden.
After searching some forums i came across a solution that really worked.
There's some sort of a problem with this chip(dont ask me how and why)

So the solution:
1.Remove Heatsink(cpu-vga)
2.Remove nearby pcie wifi or/and bluetooth.
3.Get a hair drier(YES A HAIR DRIER)
4.aim the heat stream direct on the vga chip(aprox. 3cm away) for 5 mins
5.WORKING VGA CHIP AGAIN

Mine works now im actually posting this from my laptop
I'll get the link with from the original poster.
Although he hasnt given specific details on why this fixes the problem but as far as i get it, through time and heat levels some of the chip's pins when hot must not have contact(along with shocks)

The Dell Latitude D630 laptop was first introduced in 2007. It has a 1.80 Intel core duo processor. A "duo" processor means that you take the processor speed and double it. It shipped with 512MB of RAM and an 80 GB hard drive. It originally sold for $1900 dollars, now you can find one much cheaper on eBay for about $500 dollars. Being a business class laptop, the D630 is very sober in its design and color. It comes with a two-tone matte black-and-gray chassis that looks quite elegant. The construction material is sturdy – the lid and underside of the laptop are made from magnesium alloy. This imparts the body of the Dell D630 battery a certain amount of stiffness, which eliminates any squeaks that might develop over time. The hinges, while not super reinforced as in Lenovo's products, are quite sturdy, nicely designed, and long-lasting.

The Dell Latitude D630 battery includes most of the ports and connections we'd expect on a thin-and-light, plus a few extras. It lacks S-Video-out and a multiformat flash card reader (neither of which is essential for business users), but the Latitude D630 does add one more USB port than average, plus a serial port for use with older, specialised peripherals. In addition, the Latitude D630 piles on corporate-level security measures, including not only a fingerprint reader but also a smart card slot and an internal Trusted Platform Module. Another noteworthy feature is the Latitude D630's Wi-Fi On/Off switch, which incorporates a Wi-Fi finder. Sliding the switch past the On position lets you test for nearby Wi-Fi networks, whether you're booted up or powered down on don't even have to turn your system on to find a network.

We don't think so. Flash is cool, because it's expensive, and because it does provide significant performance advantages (when SLC flash is used). But while our results are interesting for most users, they will be shocking to road warriors. You will see very clearly in the benchmark section that theory and real life are sometimes entirely different.

We still believe that flash-based drives will be the future for the performance segment, but they must not become a key component for energy-efficient notebooks and ultra-portables — where performance is secondary — as long as their average power consumption is higher than that of conventional 2.5" notebook hard drives. Dell's Inspiron E1505 thin and light notebook offers some strong performance from its processor and hard drive but it is held back by its memory and graphics.

Weighing in at a relatively hefty 6.8 pounds and measuring 1.4 inches thick, the Dell Inspiron E1505 battery sports a roomy full-sized keyboard that makes prolonged typing comfortable. The Acer TravelMate 290 series is one of the most handsome, versatile, and long-lasting budget laptops on the market. It comes with Intel Centrino technology and costs as little as AU$2499 for the bare-bones configuration, though we recommend a few upgrades; the price difference to add a DVD burner to the Acer TravelMate 290 battery is pretty good value for a notebook. While the price may say mainstream notebook, many of the features scream thin-and-light laptop. For instance, you can swap media modules in the TravelMate 290 series, which you can't do with most mainstream notebooks. It also achieved extra-long battery life in our Labs' drain tests. Despite a few design letdowns, students and families on tight budgets should give it serious consideration.

Editor's Note: The Acer Travelmate tested here varies ever so slightly from the locally available version; in the US the memory specification drops to 128MB and various hard drive sizes are available.
Although the Acer TravelMate 290 series falls into the mainstream category, the laptop's case measures a trim 3.2cm and weighs 2.8kg (3.2kg with the AC adapter). The chassis is 33.2cm wide by 27.4 inches deep, making room for a 14-inch screen in a purplish-silvery, titanium-alloy lid. The dark-grey, plastic base features a rubber shock absorber directly under the hard drive. The well-designed lid latch opens easily with one hand.

Acer's big keyboard is a letdown. Unlike the mildly U-shaped, hand-friendly keyboards found on other Acer notebooks, the TravelMate 290 battery features a straight one. It operates quietly, but it sags under pressure and gives poor feedback. The important keys are large, as you'd expect for the chassis size, and the touchpad is also spacious and smooth, with two mouse buttons below it. (There's no pointing stick.)

Icons and text appeared nice and big when displayed at the screen's native resolution of 1,024x768, but colours looked a bit washed out, especially reds and yellows. The Acer TravelMate 290 is the fastest 1.3GHz Pentium M-based system we've tested yet, easily beating its closest competitor. The Intel 82852 GME Extreme Graphics Controller shares system memory, but surprisingly, this architecture did not hurt performance as much as we've seen in the past. Acer configured the TravelMate 290LMi so that its processor would not throttle down too much, giving it a performance edge. Dell Inspiron 1520 Battery Won't Charge

My Dell Inspiron 1520 battery will not charge. My AC Adapter is fine and powering the laptop, but the battery, that IS connected (I have taken it out and put it back in) has remained at 0% for the last few days. I recently posted this complaint in another thread, but after reading so many similar complaints, I realized I should make my own. I now understand the warranty for a battery is 1 year, but I have a few very frustrating issues with this:

First, I purchased the 3 year extended warranty assuming all parts would be included- this is, to me, common sense regardless of whether the battery is considered a consumable product or not.

Second, I have had this laptop for only 13 and half months! This feels terrible- a product which I have had a 1 year warranty for (which I assumed was 3 years) has died a month and a half after it would have been freely replaced. I am a poor college student, and this laptop was expensive enough when I bought it!

And last, I have rarely used this Inspiron 1520 battery! I have taken it on only 4-5 car trips, and I can not even recall the last time (minus right now) the battery went to 0%, as I ALWAYS have it plugged in; in fact, I would surmise that if I were to use my battery as much as the average user (certainly more than me) then this battery probably would have died long ago when it was actually under its separate and special warranty! Should I be penalized for rarely using what appears to be a bad product? After all, minus the aforementioned car rides, the only time I've really used the battery is when the charger has accidentally been unplugged! As I responded in the other thread, if a product is going to be considered consumable, perhaps it should do its job more than a handful of times before malfunctioning!

I do hope this is a different problem altogether and not my hp compaq business notebook nc6120 battery, and if so, I apologize, but, after reading many similar situations, the only problem here seems to be with the battery, and this is very frustrating!

The M1330 retains a dedicated graphics processor, but Dell claims that at just 25mm its machine is the thinnest 13.3in laptop in the world. Well, until the MacBook Air goes on sale - the Apple's machine's thickest part is thinner than the Dell's thinnest...

But these are not directly comparable machines. The first thing that sprang to mind when we clapped eyes on the M1330 was just how similar it is to sony np-f970 battery. With a 13.3in display, wedge-shaped chassis heavily tapered at the front and brushed aluminium palm rests, it could be the Sony's long-lost brother.

It turns out that, surprise surprise, you pay a premium for a tiny form factor. Just look at the Sony Vaio TZ150N, for example. $2,100 for a 1.06 GHz processor? Are you kidding me? I don't care how small, it's still a rip-off.

The best deal—if you don't mind an extra pound of weight and half-inch of thickness—is the Dell XPS M1330. It bests the MacBook Air in nearly every single category, delivering about 30% more processing power, 50% more memory, over 300% more hard drive space, plus a dedicated graphics card. All of this, for $300 less. But also, two hours less of battery life, thanks to the new smaller and more efficient Core 2 Duo processor in the MacBook Air.

But it's really no surprise that a form factor as striking as the MacBook Air's warrants a premium price. Super-slim and light laptops as a category have yet to come down from the stratosphere, dollar-wise. It's a form factor that SSD just makes loads of sense for, lightening them up and cutting down on dell xps m1530 battery life, but that drives the price up even further for the time being. The mid-tier Presario V4000 notebook from HP/Compaq hits a nice sweet spot in terms of both price and performance. Starting out at $749 after rebate, this laptop line offers good speed and a solid list of components without needing too many upgrades.

That starting price gives you a 1.3GHz Intel Celeron M processor and 256MB of DDR memory, so you might want to spend a little to upgrade the power core. Very few low range notebooks are able to flaunt a powerful, crisp, clean screen along with its low price. The extra problem of opening the Windows control is more annoying than people believe; especially for me as I constantly adjust volume during movies to either boost conversation volume or quite action scenes. There have been speaker problems with almost every notebook Ive reviewed and I began to believe that low price notebooks and good sound couldnt go together. Im relieved that I was wrong.

Our Presario V4000 test system came equipped with the latest mobile components, including a 2.0GHz Pentium M processor, an 80GB hard drive, and 1GB of 333MHz memory--the maximum amount of RAM the V4000 can accommodate. A bonus is the double-layer DVD burner; for a reasonable fee, you can add HP's LightScribe technology to laser-etch labels directly on the disc's surface. While it's a dell inspiron 1501 battery tolerable movie machine, the Presario V4000 lacks the Pavilion dv4000's instant-play features and remote control, and the V4000's stereo speakers sound too soft. Its 15.4-inch wide-screen BrightView display, with a 1,280x800 native resolution, looked slightly washed-out but offered a good amount of screen real estate. With an integrated Intel 915 graphics accelerator that uses up to 128MB of system memory, the Presario V4000 is not suitable for high-end gamer who require dedicated video memory.

As I have stated, I was planning to have this notebook plugged into power for the most part, so battery life was not the biggest concern for me. This package comes with the 8-cell battery, and if mobility is important to you with this laptop, it would be wise to upgrade to a 12 cell COMPAQ PRESARIO V4000 SERIES battery or get a spare. The advertised battery life was 3 hours; however I have found it to be closer to around 2 hours and 15 minutes. However turning options off like wireless, and keeping screen brightness down, could increase this and get it closer to the advertised figure.

As you can probably feel from the review, I'm a big fan of this notebook and am glad I purchased it. I would strongly recommend this to anyone looking for a notebook with lots of features, lots of power, and presario v4000 battery that doesn't bust the bank. This would be great for a student looking for something that can handle office applications but has enough power to handle most popular games.

Dell Inspiron 1501 Review

The Dell Inspiron 1501 is a 15.4" widescreen notebook now available with the AMD Sempron, Turion or Turion X2 processor. The dell inspiron 1501 battery has a subset of the Intel based Inspiron e1505 features and carries the same basic design and build as that popular laptop. Unfortunately, Dell cut features on the Inspiron 1501 but didn't cut its price a whole lot relative to the e1505. Unless you really want an AMD processor, it's hard to recommend this machine over the only slightly more expensive and better e1505.

The Dell Inspiron 1501 is a 15.4" screen notebook available with the AMD Turion, Turion X2 and Sempron processors. Buyers seeking a versatile solution with a larger display for mainstream multimedia and productivity tasks should choose this notebook.

In terms of design, the 1501 is identical to the Dell Inspiron E1505 battery. Both measure 14 x 10.4 x 1.4 inches and have speakers integrated into the front bezel, air vents flanking the left and right sides of the chassis, large touchpads with built-in scroll areas (that make for easy Web page navigation), 80GB hard drives, and non-offensive, silver-and-white color schemes. Although the 1501 weighs slightly less (6.4 pounds vs. 6.2 pounds), the lack of dedicated CD/DVD controls is a glaring omission, even in a budget mainstream machine. When we wanted to raise or lower the volume of a DVD or skip chapters, we had to use the software's far less intuitive controls.

The 15.4-inch widescreen produced strong colors when playing a DVD, but the viewing angles were tight on our TrueLife anti-glare display. Staying centered in front of the screen is the only way to truly enjoy the visuals, so watching a movie with a friend may be out of the question.

The Inspiron 1501's front side is free of ports. Also on the left side it has only the DVD drive, an Kensington lock and the fan holes.At the backside there are a VGA-out for connecting an external display, a modem and a LAN port, the power connector and 2 USB 2.0 ports. At the right side there are two further USB 2.0 ports, a connector for a headset and a microphone, a 3in1 Cardreader and an ExpressCard slot.

At a closer look, one can see that Dell somewhat skimped on ports. E.g a firewire port or a S-Video out are missing. Furthermore, an optical sound out (S/PDIF) would be sometimes useful. However, the 4 USB 2.0 have to be rated positively as well as the order of the ports.

This computer does not deserve to be called a computer. Ours had to have the fan replaced, the battery replaced, the power supply replaced, DVD runs like a mack truck engine, the extended hp pavilion zd7000 battery we bought did not have an extended life, the computer shuts off randomly, it looses files and the hard drive crashes and has to be reloaded, screen goes black and tiny boxes with multi colored dots appear on the screen, maintenance programming completed and it still does not work correctly. Last time we called for service no one returned our call. I tried 6 times. Then went online to request maintenance....funny thing....never heard from anyone but I did receive a survey to complete describing my experience with the recent maintenance request.....completed it and then nothing. Still stuck with the same worthless computer that is out of warranty. Imagine that. Stay away from this Dell computer.

With the HD-friendly Pavilion dv9000t, HP shows that it continues to take entertainment seriously when designing its laptops. The latest iteration of the desktop replacement incorporates a bevy of high-end components, such as a Core 2 Duo processor, discrete Nvidia graphics, and a built-in HD-DVD drive, into its lightweight case. Add in the dv9000t's sleek design, with its echoes of consumer electronics devices, and you have a system that will look as good in the living room as on the desktop. We decided to pit the ibm thinkpad r40 battery against the Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV660, the successor to the Qosmio G35-AV650, the world's first notebook with an integrated HD-DVD drive, by booting up the hi-def version of The Bourne Supremacy. On the dv9000t, the movie looked incrementally better than a standard-definition DVD, but on the G35-AV660, the colors were much more vibrant, and the images were notably sharper. That's because the Qosmio sports a 1920 x 1200-pixel resolution LCD, compared with our dv9000t's 1440 x 900-pixel screen. Spending an extra $50 will get you a more HD-friendly 1680 x 1050 pixels, but HP doesn't offer an 1920 x 1200-pixel option. On the plus side, we like that you can play HD DVDs on the dv9000t using QuickPlay.

We then output the visuals from both notebooks to the HP LC3260N--a 32-inch television--via an HDMI cable. We were less than thrilled with the dv9000t's visuals. The colors and crispness were still ho-hum, even though we were watching the movie on a much larger screen. Although the G35-AV660 didn't display images on the big screen with as much pop as it did on its own monitor, The Bourne Supremacy looked sharper and had better color balance when fed through that notebook than it did through the Toshiba PA3291U-1BRS battery.

In addition to the large storage capacity, HP has also included a full two gigabytes of memory to complement the Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor. This is double what most desktop replacements offer and allows the system to power through memory intensive applications or multitasking better than its competitors. So, if you are looking for raw performance, the dv9040us does do quite well although it isn't the top.

The new TI gauge is more accurate than today's gauges, which measure a battery's voltage, because it measures a number of electrical properties. Voltage-only-based gauges are erratic and unreliable because voltage doesn't fall steadily as the battery is discharged. What's more, the voltage changes as the battery ages and experiences different temperatures. It also varies with different power demands on the battery.

17" notebook PCs aren't known for their ability to leave AC outlets for long. Memory is adequate, but you may be better off getting 2GB instead (replacing both 512MBs inside with 1GBs).

Note the one of the biggest battery drains in Vista on a laptop is the background indexing service - this increases hard disk usage - disable it in the services.

The Core 2 Duo T7300 processor 2Ghz and 2GB of RAM (up to 4GB) can handle all from standard application to hardcore multitasking. In the top of the display there's a webcam VGA resolution which deliver clear skype video call even in low light environment. We recently reviewed the largest system in Dell's XPS range, the huge desktop 720 H2C. Now meet the smallest; the stylish M1330, Dell's latest ultraportable notebook which replaces the XPS M1210 battery. Just calling it stylish is really doing it an injustice, as it's Dells most desirable notebook to date. But it's not had a trouble-free birth, due to some production problems that have now largely been worked through.

Finally! Having waited for what seemed like an age to get our mucky paws on Dell's latest and possibly greatest consumer notebook, we can bring you a review of the Dell XPS M1330 battery. Doubtless anyone who has already ordered one will be able to substantiate this frustration, because Dell has been struggling to fulfil orders of its latest consumer notebook due to some well publicised production issues. Thankfully, those issues seem to have been alleviated somewhat, though that'll be of little consolation to those who've been waiting for theirs to arrive.

We found the notebook's speakers plenty loud but the bass weak, especially at the top volumes. Dell bundles noise-isolating earbuds, which sounded spectacular for both movies and music. We'd like to see some visual feedback when adjusting volume with the media buttons and the remote, but beyond that, watching movies or listening to music on a plane will be a blast with this screen and earbud combo.

Like its predecessor, the XPS M1330 packs a lot of power into a compact frame. Intel's 2-GHz Next Generation Core 2 Duo processor, along with 2GB of RAM, paced this system to a very strong PCMark05 score of 4,545; that's about 1,000 points higher than average for a thin-and-light system. Regular productivity tasks were speedy as well, even with several windows open, and the Toshiba PA3399U-1BAS battery handled Vista's Aero interface with ease.

This notebook pumps out plenty of eye candy, at least for casual gamers. Thanks to Nvidia's GeForce 8400M GS graphics card with 128MB video memory, the M1330 turned in a way-above-average 3DMark03 score of 5,196. The hp pavilion dv9000 battery garnered decent F.E.A.R. scores of 56 and 15 frames per second on autodetect and maximum settings, respectively. Having an HDMI output on board means you'll be able to output video and audio to a larger screen via a single port, whether you're playing games or watching movies. I was looking for a small, portable and light laptop but still with good performance for my wife when I first saw the reviews for XPS M1330. We liked the components vs. price and of course the design and weight. I was a bit sceptic about our decision to buy and try it but all my concerns disappeared when I had our new laptop running in my hands. I was amazed; it was small, fast, good looking and relatively light. I was not willing to give the laptop to my wife during the first tree weeks... There are very few 13-inch laptops on the market that bring the caliber of hardware and performance of the Dell XPS M1330. We’re getting a glimpse of the future in ultraportable power with the Dell XPS M1330. Game-capable graphics, blazing processor speed, and a pile of RAM all packed into a lovely chassis that’s as comfortable to carry as a hardback airport romance novel. Despite the extra cash you’ll shell out, we think the hp compaq business notebook nx6125 battery is the clear choice over other cheaper, less powerful notebooks.

The M1330 is a joy to use. The full-size keyboard is exceedingly comfortable to type on, and we love the touch-sensitive multimedia control buttons above the function-key row. The touch pad and mouse buttons are slightly small, but the buttons are quiet, and the pad includes marked horizontal and vertical scroll areas.

The real draw is the option to get a wide-screen (1,280x800) LED-backlit display—a $200 premium that's worth every penny. Employing 32 LEDs instead of a fluorescent tube to illuminate the LCD pixels, it's brighter than traditional screens and delivers a higher contrast ratio that makes images pop. The LEDs also use anywhere from 25 percent to 66 percent less power than a fluorescent tube (depending on the brightness level), boosting battery life. On the M1330, DVDs showed lifelike color reproduction and very good shadow detail. Sound quality from the built-in stereo speakers was a bit thin and lacking in bass, but they delivered respectable volume for a portable this size, with no distortion.

The Sony does lag behind the M1330 when it comes to battery performance. This is where that nine-cell battery plays an important role. In running down while playing a DVD movie, the M1330 lasted 3 hours 23 minutes. Normal day-to-day computing activities can probably get you well over 5 hours. You'll get an extra 22 minutes worth of battery life with the acer aspire 3680 battery, making it slightly better for travel, but you lose the luxury of having a built-in optical drive. The M1330's nine-cell battery adds to the weight, but you can always swap it out for a four-cell or cell-cell battery, which doesn't get you as much juice. If it were up to me, I'd take the nine-cell despite the extra weight.

It's been a while since Dell delivered a laptop that possessed so many awe-inspiring features. The Dell XPS M1330 is a monumental step in that it takes the best things from other great ultraportables and combines them into a single entity. My only peeve is that the weight can get up there with the nine-cell battery. Otherwise, this ultraportable should easily sit at the top of any laptop shopping list.

Many of the back-to-school laptops we've looked at in the $1,000-plus category have CPUs and chipsets from Intel's new Centrino 2 platform. The XPS 1330 battery was one of a handful with older parts, including a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 CPU. That's still the non-Centrino-2 medium-to-high-end default, and gave us decent performance all-around. Going forward, a refreshed version of the 1330 selling for the same price should have Intel's new P8400 CPU.

The system fan and heatsinks in the M1330 do a great job managing heat when the system is under load ... as we discovered when we ran multiple benchmarks back to back. The CPU temperature peaked at only 58 degrees Celsius during multiple 3DMark05 and 3DMark06 tests. The fan moved a significant amount of hot air but the noise was reasonably low and wasn't noticeable over background noise unless the room was perfectly quiet.

One thing to mention is that we kept the 9-cell extended life battery attached to the M1330 during these benchmarks. The extended life battery lifts the system off the desk and allows air to move under the notebook case ... helping to cool the system. When we performed the same benchmarks with the standard acer travelmate 240 series battery (with the case resting flush against the desk) the CPU temperatures peaked at 64 degrees Celsius.

The attractive brushed aluminum surface of the palm rests did heat up during benchmarking, but the temperatures remained at comfortable levels. The left palm rest was slightly warmer than the right. If you are particularly sensitive to temperatures you might find the warmth uncomfortable, but most users will be unlikely to complain about this.

The hard drive in our pre-production unit was virtually silent and made no audible squeals or scratching noises. The overall lack of noise coming from the fan and hard drive on the M1330 should be a welcome surprise for people with sensitive hearing ... particularly for those who owned the M1210. In fact, the only noticeable amount of unwelcome noise coming from the M1330 is from the slot-loading drive when it loads or ejects a disk.

The M1330 has most of the inputs and outputs you would expect (USB, FireWire, flash-memory-card reader, ExpressCard slot, VGA, LAN), plus two headphone jacks and a welcome High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port for connecting to an external high-definition television (HDTV). But the laptop has only two USB ports (most laptops nowadays have at least three) and no modem jack (so dial-up users need not apply).

With its handsome design, sharp screen, and extensive list of options, it's hard not to love the dell xps m1730 battery. For buyers who need a constant computing companion, it's worth a long look.

In these financially troubled times, the budget sector is more important than ever. Considering it's a notebook from the world's third-largest PC manufacturer, Dell Inspiron 1545 battery (also known as the Inspiron 15) has a lot to live up to, especially since the last Inspiron we had through our labs, the Inspiron 1525, walked away with our coveted Recommended Award. Let's find out if the 1545 is worthy of similar praise.

The Dell Inspiron 1545 is a 15.6" screen integrated graphics multimedia notebook from Dell. The Inspiron 1545 will have a budget price point when configured with an Intel Celeron processor or mid-range price point when configured with a Core 2 Duo processor.

As with many new budget notebooks, Dell's latest is available in a few different colours if purchased direct. Matte Black is standard, but for an extra £29.99 you can choose Microsatin Blue, Red or Pacific High-Gloss Blue lids. Not exactly much choice, especially given Dell's usually prolific customisation options, but any choice is better than none. where do i start? well the machine looks the part firstly with a beautiful glossy finish (susceptible to finger prints but nevertheless adds to the slick design) surrounding the keyboard. which. by the way, is great to type on (as i'm doing so at the moment), as the keys aren't flimsy or wobbly rather they feature good feedback. anyway, the screen has a great resolution as it doesn't suffer from banding or excessive backlight bleed and has excellent viewing angles. The speakers sound a lot better than the rubbish we encounter on most budget dell inspiron 1545 battery laptops / notebooks. i also have a similar spec toshiba but this machine is in a different league in the entertainment sector.

However its worth noting that the battery life is average meaning its not too efficient but hey look at the spec, the price and the performance (plus its on vista)!!! In a nutshell: a DELL laptop (emphasising the brands rep for reliability and great tech support) which is pitched at the budget market and is a simple family laptop with quality speakers, the Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop battery is definitely worth considering. Its new range of XPS notebooks, the M1330 and M1530 were both great machines, while its desktop offerings, like the XPS 420, haven't been half bad either. But let it not be said that Dell has had things all its own way, because there have been a few turkeys lodged in there too - the XPS M1730 springs to mind.

The Inspiron 1525 battery is a Core 2 Duo powered 15.4" screen notebook from Dell. The Inspiron 1525 has Intel X3100 integrated graphics, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a thinner and lighter form factor than the previous Inspiron 1520.

Like most notebooks from Dell, the Inspiron 1525 can be customized to cater to the needs of the customer. The Dell Inspiron 1525 we were testing had an Intel Core 2 Duo T5800, 3GB of DDR2 system memory, 15.4" wide-screen 1280x800 display, Intel GMA X3100 graphics, 250GB SATA hard drive, DVD+/-RW drive, Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g, an integrated 2.0MP web-camera, and a 6-cell battery. The Core 2 Duo T5800 is in Intel's Merom-2M family and is clocked at 2.00GHz, has 2MB of L2 cache, supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology, and is built on a 65nm process.
