AmberMac on VP Digital

PowerFriending’s author is interviewed for a video show by VP Digital on Viafoura. See the complete interview below

She sort of gives a “State of the Union” message on digital from her perspective as an innovator and keen follower of the space. It is a perspective that she can uniquely share because of her experience as an author, ux specialist in answer to her interviewer. She is a digital columnist for The Globe and Mail in Trending Tech, a co-host on two highly followed video podcasts The Social Hour and Command N, a broadcaster on CTV and a strategist in digital for her firm MGIMedia, a Canadian leader in the Digital Strategy space.

Amber MacArthur – Technology Host, Journalist, and Strategist from Viafoura on Vimeo.

New book Coming ?

And it appears we may have another masterpiece in the oven with a new book. Although Amber does not fully reveal if the next “book” will be in hardcover or online we see her own actions reflecting the changes in the market and await eagerly the outcome. The concept of book publishers publishing hardcovers versus digital online self-published multimedia efforts are undergoing massive change and Amber pointed to children’s interactive books as a classic example of changes. Also discussed was the disruption to the market from large players like Amazon delivering directly and by-passing the retail shops As an author she looks to advice from her readers at how they wish to get her content, and knowing this trendsetter in her wisdom she will make the right moves.

You Tube will grow in 2012

The explosion of video will continue in 2012 with You Tube being the biggest player, in conjunction with its other properties such as Google + being able to allow sharing directly, in addition to the integration with the manu other social properties. You Tube will have more direct competition in online video with the emergence of new models from the old established TV networks like CBS which already has made headway with quality productions being offered.

Social Networks Evolving

Facebook, Twitter,Google + are all on the scene with Facebook evolving with its business model quite well.New entries to the market are allowing it to get broadened at at the top by the big players with unique niche sites like Quora and Path springing off for distinct communities.

AmberMac..now into 40th Episode

Powerfriending author AmberMac has teamed up with Sarah Lane to do a new podcast on the TWIT.tv network. The show will be a continuance from the ever popular Net@Night with Amber and Leo Laporte that has already had a long history with over 190 episodes. Lane filled in on net@night during Amber’s maternity leave and has been on and off with Amber and the show since then filling in when Leo was unavailable.

AmberMac and Sarah Lane- The Social Hour

The two are a dynamic duo from different countries although both are well travelled and are usually in the center of the tech and social media scene both in the Silicon Valley and the thriving scene in Toronto where Amber is based..

I watched the first live version of The Social Hour and think it will be fun for anyone who wants to know the news now in social and a bit of the why and how behind it.

Tell to Win: Connect, Persuade, and Triumph with the Hidden Power of Story

Why another book review on the Powerfriending.org site? Simple answer one of Powerfriending’s big supporters is Tony Robbins who did a video telling us what a super person AmberMac is and why we should listen to her. I just got an email with a small video from the same Tony Robbins today encouraging me to look at Peter Guber’s new book, with almost the same fervor. The book is entitled Tell to Win: Connect, Persuade, and Triumph with the Hidden Power of Story

Any smart marketer knows that the best way to succeed in their objective is to tell a story that explains the idea better than any set of data points or PowerPoint slides sets could on the merits of the idea. Tell to Win…The Hidden Power of Story is the way that we all learned at our Daddy’s knee and it is the way that most of us learned our life lessons all along.

Peter Guber Author Tell to Win: Connect, Persuade, and Triumph with the Hidden Power of Story

Peter Guber , the author is the former chairman of Sony Pictures and current CEO of Mandalay Entertainment Group. Guber illustrates how powerful storytelling—about yourself or your product—can be the ultimate tool to get the meeting, engage the listener, and close the deal. With brisk and readable anecdotes, the author relates what he’s seen and learned in Hollywood, and how his celebrated friends—Bill Clinton, the Dalai Lama, Arianna Huffington, Nelson Mandela, and Frank Sinatra—impressed upon him the power of a well-crafted story or appeal.

Tell to Win Author Peter Guber

The celebrity name-dropping lends some glitter to Guber’s very reasonable precepts: as he urges the reader to harness the power of metaphor in crafting the core narrative of a pitch or advertising campaign, he refers to how Michael Jackson taught him about drama by making him watch a python slowly stalk a helpless mouse, and how KISS frontman Gene Simmons, son of Holocaust survivors, used his backstory to fuel his ambition and his business strategy. This valuable and inspiring book will help readers deliver an authentic and meaningful story to customers, colleagues, or prospective clients.

Tell to Win Teaches Us How To Spin a Good Tale

Good storytelling begets good understanding as the reader feels the story on an emotional level. I think it is often interesting to look who makes pre-sale comments on new books. I heard about this title from an email from Tony Robbins who told me the story of how Guber had been such an influence on his life, not only as a friend and a mentor .but also from the spinning of great stories which moved Robbins, who is no slouch in the storytelling and personal development world. Guber’s book Tell to Win: Connect, Persuade, and Triumph with the Hidden Power of Story is available March 1 at online sources and bookstores. If you want to preorder this book, Tell to Win you can do it now at Amazon,Barnes&Noble or many other fine booksellers.

Ever the social person that Denise is she posted this pic on Facebook with an encouragement for people to go out and get it and read it, if they had not done so already. The picture is very nice for all of us in Ontario’s snowy winter but the wise thought did not escape us.

Powerfriending Review by Andie Lewandowski

Toronto based-writer Andie Lewandowski recently reviewed PowerFriending on her blog Andie as a Writer

“Cred: Shares her technology expertise in Toronto’s Globe and Mail, on Yahoo!, and in online and cable television shows: Webnation, CommandN, TWiT, and the late Call For Help.

Summary: Non-fiction, how-to book. Amber walks her talk.

Follow the author in action as you read and see applications of her tips at work and to keep up on the new trends that aren’t in the book.

Read if…
you are on Facebook
you want to be on Facebook
you aren’t on Facebook
you are interested in social media other than Facebook
you want a social media expert to communicate in an adult, formal tone
Read when…
you have a specific question – the contents & index allow this book to be used as a reference piece
you wake up in the morning – read a few pages and try out the tips (this will help you avoid being overwhelmed by all the information)
you want examples to show how companies handle issues and problems with customers online
you need guidance for strategizing your growing business’ social media plan
you think you don’t need a social media strategy (you do!)

This Book Is Like… reading a traditional book. Malcolm Gladwell-esque.

Amber is so bright, real and relatable on camera. Her written words feel different because her personality has lost its visual and auditory impact and therefore, this book highlights her professional side.

Despite cute nods to a tech savvy personality with made up words and publishing under her handle, I found the style of the book dry when compared to the Amber I’ve been mentor-crushing on since 2004 – or the Amber I met a few weeks ago!

However, I have come to realize that this book is for people who are more comfortable with the formal tone and want a straight forward instruction book. This is a large niche that needs an authority like Amber – I only hope they find her!

If you want the real Amber – well, my favourite version of Amber – keep up with CommandN.

Amber gives the gift of simplicity with these basic guidelines for social media conduct:
The ABCs of Internet Friending:
Authenticity
Bravery
Consistency
Amber also covers the history of social media, for those who are just joining in and are feeling like they’ve been missing out. This is a refreshing change from the overall tone of social media.
“Fail.”

It’s good to see the former web design and usability expert incorporating visual layout elements into this book:

I wanted more.

Next time, MOAR INFO GRAPHICS PLZ.

Of course, I’ll always be a fan-girl:

(I rarely mark my library territory.)”

If you have not got your copy of PowerFriending yet just look to your right for the bookseller of your choice
