width="200" height="145">

Anticipating a power shortage of 11,000 MW by the end of 12th five year plan in Southern region (SR), Central Electricity Authority proposes to lay two high voltage direct current (HVDC) lines from Gujarat and Chhattisgarh with 6,000 MW capacity each to overcome power deficit faced by Southern states.

According to CEA estimate, total projected demand for SR comprising Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala at the end of 2016-17 would be 57,221 MW while the total availability would stand at 48,188 MW which includes generation by newly added power projects of 15,760 MW.

“The SR would be deficit of power due to high load growth and the fact that some of the planned generation projects, like Krishnapatnam Ultra Mega Power Project, Ind Barath, Yermarus, Edlapur, Kalpakkam, Udangudi and Cheyyur UMPP, among others are getting delayed. It was assessed that the SR would have deficit of 7000 to 11,000 MW of power by 2016-17,” said CEA sources.

A senior official of Power Grid Corporation of India said that to overcome the power crisis in the SR, many inter and intra regional transmission projects are to be undertaken. “We are planning to construct two lines from Gujarat and Chhattisgarh to SR to import the surplus power from there,” the official said.

A 800 Kv HVDC line would be laid between Raigarh in Chhattisgarh and Pugalur in Tamil Nadu with a capacity of 6,000 MW.

TANGEDCO along with Maharashtra State Mining Corporation proposes to set up a 4,000 MW pit head power station in a coal block jointly allocated to them in Chhattisgarh. The state would get 2500 mw as its share.

PGCIL official said that Gujarat could have around 6,000 MW of surplus power in the future.

“The surplus power from Gujarat can be imported to southern region to meet the deficit. Hence we are planning a 800 kv HVDC link from Gujarat to a suitable landing point in SR,” the official said, adding that total cost of the project be around Rs 12,000 crore.

A TNEB official said that execution of these transmission lines would ease grid congestion and enable power import from surplus regions in times of need.

Source

Power Grid to invest Rs 472 cr in two projects…

Power Grid Corporation of India will invest more than Rs 472 crore in two projects.

The investment plans were approved by the transmission utility's board of directors at their meeting held on January 13, PGCIL said in a regulatory filing today.

The two projects are estimated to cost Rs 472.58 crore.

An investment of Rs 374.63 crore will be made in 'Phase-I of Unified Real Time Dynamic State Measurement (URTDSM) Project', which is expected to be completed in 27 months.

Besides, the state-owned company will invest Rs 97.95 crore in 'Transmission System associated with contingency plan for evacuation of power from IL&FS (2x800 MW)'. width="200" height="121">

Various options are being studied to reduce the cost of smart grid technologies, which will help in bringing down overall transmission and distribution losses in the power sector, a Planning Commission member said today.

Smart grid technologies would help in ensuring efficient power system and pilot projects in this regard have already been identified by the government.

Planning Commission Member B K Chaturvedi said that an exercise is underway to reduce the cost of smart grid technologies.

High capital and operating costs are among the major challenges in implementing smart grid technologies in the power sector.

"There is an eminent need to develop smart meters to meet the challenges of power theft," Chaturvedi said and added that the losses related to transmission and distribution of electricity should be reduced.

He was speaking at a conference on smart grids organised by industry body PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here.

Fourteen smart grid pilot projects have been shortlisted by the Power Ministry for funding.

Going by estimates, India's Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses are more than 20 per cent, among one of the highest in the world.

BYPL had earlier been barred power supply from this Himachal Pradesh-based power plant from October to December 2013, after defaulting on payments and now SJVN Ltd has extended this power regulation till June-end. This deprived the national capital of about 40-50 MW of power.

SJVN Ltd sent a regulation notice to the state load dispatch centre on regulation of supply from its 1,500 MW hydel plant in December, sources said. BYPL's share from the plant is 27.24% of total allocation.

"SJVN Ltd in its notice has informed that power rendered surplus due to regulation of power supply to BYPL would be sold through PTC on energy exchange platform," said an official. Sources said the regulation will continue in 'duration of regulation' or up to an earlier date if the default is rectified.

"The regulation will be communicated by reducing the schedule of BYPL from the identified source (Nathpa Jhakri plant). SLDC Delhi will have to regulate drawal schedule for the intrastate regulated entities and the regional load dispatch centre (RLDC) would regulate drawal schedule of Delhi State Control Area," said a notice served by SJVN Ltd.

BSES discoms have been regularly defaulting on payment to entities like NTPC, NHPC, DTL, IPGCL and PPCL, claiming cash flow crisis and financial difficulties.

The discoms are now in the midst of disagreement with the new government led by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal who not only ordered a CAG audit for the companies but also announced a Rs 200 crore subsidy benefit for consumers, the cost of which owed to the BSES companies would be adjusted against their pending dues to Delhi government. BSES discoms have said that this adjustment would not be sustainable for them.

Source

Odisha to sell surplus power to Karnataka…

The Odisha government has decided to sell surplus power to Karnataka.

The matter was discussed at a high-level meeting here on Monday, which was attended by chief secretaries of both states. Senior officials of the Odisha government’s Energy department were also present.

“Karnataka Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee, who is in the State, had an official meeting with our Chief Secretary J K Mohapatra here on Monday, where a preliminary discussion on the power sale was held. Details will be worked out when officials of both states meet,” said sources in the Energy department.

At the meeting, the Karnataka chief secretary reportedly expressed his keenness to purchase power from a State-owned undertaking in Odisha rather than a private company.

If everything works out well, Karnataka will purchase power from the Grid Corporation of Odisha, a State-owned undertaking which purchases power from different sources, including private sector electricity generation companies in the State. It sells them to four power distribution utilities that supply power to consumers in four different zones in Odisha.

This will not be the first instance of Odisha, one of the very few power surplus states in the country, selling electricity to another state. It had earlier sold power to Rajasthan, Delhi and Haryana.

If sources in the Energy department are to be believed, the average power requirement in Odisha at present stands at around 2,700 MW. The State currently gets about 3,000 MW from different sources, including its own thermal and hydro power stations, besides electricity generating private sector companies. “We get around 300 MW of surplus power at the moment which can be sold to other states”, an official in the Energy department said.

Source

Kerala, Tamil Nadu unable to buy power from National Grid...

India's southern states are unable to buy power from the rest of the country although a new grid has been put in place since January 1.

Kerala and Tamil Nadu have not been able to buy power from the exchanges over the past one month, a senior official of Indian Exchange said, adding that prices have risen substantially in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka due to inadequate supply from the local plants.

"Although the national grid now connects the entire country, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have not been able to source any power because this new grid is wheeling only about 300-400 mw a day and power trading has not been allowed on the grid yet," the official said, requesting anonymity.

Kerala, Tamil Nadu unable to buy power from National Grid

While there is no generating station with excess power in these two states, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have been receiving some supply from the local plants, he said. However, this supply is not adequate.

As a result, power prices in these two states have risen sharply to 5 per unit from 3 per unit over the past one month, he added. At the same time, there are a number of thermal power stations with idle capacity in north and east India. These plants cannot be fired up as the new grid is not stable enough to supply excess power to the southern states from the rest of the country, officials said.

Until last month, the southern grid was a standalone power distribution system which could not draw adequate power from the rest of the country. Producers such as NTPC, on the other hand, were saddled with idle capacity because they could not route power from their plants due to lack of a transmission system linking southern India. Power prices have, therefore, remained high in the southern states, officials said, adding that the new grid is yet to change the scenario.

Source

CG to Pioneer Manufacture of Smart Grid Devices...

Avantha Group Company CG launched its state-of-the-art Smart Grid facility at the Global Village, in Bangalore today, for full-fledged manufacturing of Smart Grid devices. Besides manufacturing Smart Grid devices, the facility will support economic development, foster job creation and boost an understanding of Smart Grid solutions in the energy field.

The Smart Grid devices manufactured in this facility will offer numerical solutions to Indian Utilities and Industries in the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) segment and provide improvement in the electric grid to make it more efficient and reliable. CG has invested 80 million INR in this facility which can employ more than 100 people. The Smart Grid facility will manufacture Substation Automation products, Distribution Automation devices, Protection and Control systems, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Telecommunication Solutions. It will also offer Global Engineering Services such as Systems Integration, Installation, and Commissioning. The facility is fully equipped with modern equipment to ensure an annual production capacity of 10,000 units of Power Line Carrier Communication Terminals (PLCC) and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED).

CG has the most comprehensive portfolio that provides specific solutions and products for each application, including systems that can evolve as the network evolves. CG’s solutions give timely and necessary information needed to implement automatic functions and allow maximum use of the grid at minimum cost. The real value-add of the Smart Grid concept over the conventional automation system is that Smart Grids are able to convert the data provided by installed devices into actions and decisions that are taken in real time to operate the network.

With more than 2 million CG Smart Meter complete solutions installed worldwide, CG is a well-established manufacturer in this field. CG’s Smart Grid devices are running successfully in the world's first major Smart Grid deployment at the Iberdrola STAR Project, Bilbao, Spain, where over 2,27,000 Smart meters monitor the electricity services provided to the area’s 4,10,000 inhabitants. In the past year, CG has participated in no less than ten Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Pilot Projects in Europe, Asia, and America.

CG is already participating with many of these Smart Grid devices and services, in India’s first Smart Grid Pilot project - the Puducherry Smart City project which requires approximately 87,000 Smart Meters and a Street Light Automation solution that will prove substantial savings to the Electricity Department of the Government of Puducherry (PED). CG’s Utility Distribution franchise that operates in Jalgaon efficiently manages the multiple data obtained from the intelligent devices installed at all voltage levels, enhancing the quality of service provided to the Utility’s end users and drastically reduces technical and non-technical losses.

CG’s cost effective Smart Grid solutions will help Utilities identify and eliminate power thefts and system losses caused by aging or faulty equipment. For the Utility’s customers, CG’s Smart grid solutions will offer more control over their power consumption and energy costs and spread awareness of consumption patterns.

As a part of its transmission network expansion plan, Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) has proposed an investment outlay of 170000 million INR** for implementation of various projects during the current financial year. CG aims to participate in PGCIL’s Smart grid related energy improvement projects.
Commenting on the inauguration, Avantha Group Company CG’s CEO & Managing Director Laurent Demortier said, “The opening of CG’s Smart Grid manufacturing facility in Bangalore is a result of intense planning with the Indian stakeholders: customers, regulators and employees. I thank all of them for what they have achieved so far. Expansion in Smart Grid markets is a key strategy of CG. After America and Europe the Bangalore facility will spearhead Smart Grid operations in Asia.”

Source

Soon, wireless power transfer on the go...

Imagine charging your cell phone while on an evening walk without any wire or device near you. This 'power in the air' thought has received a big boost with Duke University researchers demonstrating the feasibility of wireless power transfer using low-frequency magnetic fields over distances much larger than the size of the transmitter and receiver.

"What consumers want and expect from a useful wireless power system is the ability to charge a device wherever it is - not simply to charge it without a cable," said Yaroslav Urzhumov, assistant research professor of electrical and computer engineering at Duke University.

"Previous commercial products like the PowerMat have not become a standard solution exactly for that reason as they lock the user to a certain area or region where transmission works," he added.

The Duke researchers have created a 'superlens' that focuses on magnetic fields.

The superlens translates the magnetic field emanating from one power coil onto its twin nearly a foot away, inducing an electric current in the receiving coil, said the study published in the journal "Scientific Reports".

This is the first time such a system has successfully sent power safely and efficiently through the air.

"We have demonstrated that the efficiency of magneto-inductive wireless power transfer can be enhanced over distances many times larger than the size of the receiver and transmitter," said Urzhumov.

"This is important because if this technology is to become a part of everyday life, it must conform to the dimensions of today's pocket-sized mobile electronics," he added.

Superlens looks like a few dozen giant Rubik's cubes stacked together.

Both the exterior and interior walls of the hollow blocks are intricately etched with a spiraling copper wire reminiscent of a microchip.

On one side of the superlens, the researchers placed a small copper coil with an alternating electric current running through it, which creates a magnetic field around the coil.

"It's actually easy to increase the power transfer distance by simply increasing the size of the coils," explained Urzhumov.

Urzhumov and his team want to drastically upgrade the system to make it more suitable for realistic power transfer scenarios such as charging mobile devices or other electrical devices as you move around in your home or in the neighbourhood.

"This will help in finding solutions for some of the daunting challenges the Indian power sector is faced with, such as enabling better access to electricity, providing lifeline supply to all households and reducing T&D losses among others. This would also guide planning and investments for future power projects and T&D activities," B N Sharma, joint secretary, ministry of power said.

Speaking at an international conference organised as part of an international exhibition on electrical products and services, ELECRAMA, on Friday, he said the government had recently unveiled the Smart Grid Vision and Road Map for the future for both modernising the ageing grids as well as for transition towards low carbon power economy by integrating renewable generation with the grid.

According to ABB, a smart grid is an evolved grid system that manages electricity demand in a sustainable, reliable and economic manner, built on advanced infrastructure and tuned to facilitate the integration of all involved. Smart grids will provide more electricity to meet rising demand, increase reliability and quality of power supplies, increase energy efficiency, and be able to integrate low carbon energy sources into power networks.

G Kumar Naik, Managing Director, KPTCL said, "The Government of Karnataka has given top most priority to transformers by proposing to set up transformer repair centres in every taluk in the state and transformer banks in every district head quarter."

Raj Eswaran, President, Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturing Association (IEEMA) said in his address that the industry body had identified five areas for strategic and policy interventions by both the government and industry.

India's Rs 12,000 crore transformer industry is facing a few challenges as it is currently operating at about 60 per cent capacity due to a slump in demand projected by the government companies, said Aditya Dhoot, Vice-Chairman ELECRAMA. The Mission plan 2012-2022 for the electrical equipment industry was launched in July 2013 and its vision is to make India the country of choice for production of electrical equipment and reach an output of $100 billion by balancing exports and imports.

Source: Business Standard

Power grids need to be more intelligent, feels Alstom chief...

India is a world leader in the power transmission business, but lags behind in the transmission end of the business, said Gregoire Poux-Guillaume, Executive Vice-President, Alstom, and Head of Alstom Grid Worldwide, here on Wednesday.

Speaking at the inaugural session of ELECRAMA 2014, an international event of the power transmission and distribution industry, Mr. Guillaume said, “The problem is mainly because of under-investment as a result of the heavy losses being made by companies.” Observing that the global energy markets are ‘changing like never before’, Mr. Guillaume said, ‘Grids need to be more intelligent’.

For instance, digital sub-stations were needed to cope with the dynamic nature of energy supply and demand. He pointed out that the rising proportion of renewable energy in the energy mix had resulted in the emergence of ‘prosumers’ — entities that generate energy at certain times but also draw energy from the grid at other times. “Greater automation of the grid is, thus, a necessity,” he observed.

The rapid expansion of the grid capacity in the last few years belied the notion that economic growth in the country had tapered off, contented Devendra Chaudhry, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Power. He pointed out that about one lakh circuit kilometres of capacity was to be added to the distribution network, and about 2.8 mega volt amperes of transmission capacity was to be added in the next few years. “I do not think this kind of expansion can be termed a slowdown,” he quipped.

Source

Linking Ladakh with national grid: PGCIL to implement Rs 2076.56 crore project...

The government has finally decided to start implementing the 220-kv power transmission line that would link the arid Ladakh desert with the national grid. The PGCIL will implement the Rs 2076.56 crore project that will be jointly funded by the centre and the state government but will eventually become property of the J&K state. CCEA has approved the project.

Apart from having two small stretches of 8.30 kms length underground to avoid damages by massive snow fall on Zoji La range, the 352.30 kms Srinagar-Leh line with around 1400 towers will have four 66 kV interconnection systems at Drass, Kargil, Khaltse and Leh. The sub-stations would require laying 50.50 kms of 66 kV transmission network. The line will carry a voice and data line along with.

Surge in power requirement of the region and a deficit of 95 percent apart, the project is being implemented fast to ensure resistibility of supplies to the defence establishments as the area having borders with China and Pakistan has huge strategic importance.

The PGCIL that will implement the project within 42 months will charge only 12% of the project cost as its consultancy fee to help the government make project viable. Given the strategic nature of the region, the government ruled out hiring any foreign consultant. This will be the first project of its kind that PGCIL will implement in highly hostile terrain. PGCIL sources said they have already undertaken the survey of the entire line. Its route alignment was undertaken using Satellite Imageries through National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) Department of Space and for designing avalanche prone towers, help was sought from defence ministry's Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment ( SASE).

For laying towards in a particular stretch, the corporation will have to fly the men and material because there is no possibility of laying any road.

The line will pass through a very hostile terrain comprising very heavy snow zones from Gagangeer to Ghumri (around 60 km), high security areas close to Line of Control (LoC) between Drass and Kargil (about 60 km) and very low temperature and dry climate (cold desert) of Ladakh (about 220 km). The challenges involve working in extremely harsh climatic conditions, lesser working period available and transportation of heavy machinery and laying of 220 KV underground cabling at Z- More and Zozilla Pass. Transformers for four sub-stations may also have to be airlifted because of low capacity of road bridges.

The line that was initially announced as part of the Prime Minister's Reconstruction Plan (PMRP) in 2004 was deferred as the Ladakh region wanted the implementation of twin power project - Nimu-Bazgo and Chutak, on priority. The twin projects with cumulative capacity of 89 MWs are already completed and partly in operation. In absence of power evacuation system or the proper distribution network locally, the twin projects operate as captive stations being linked directly to the load.

The sparsely populated Ladakh constitutes almost 74% of J&K geography but comprises of Leh and Kargil districts only. Apart from a new corps of army that was raised after the Kargil war, the region is emerging tourist destination as well. Currently, the net energy requirement of 150 MWs is expected to reach 224 MWs in next five years. Most of the peak time energy is being managed through highly polluting DG sets that costs Rs 18 per unit and in certain cases upward of Rs 30.

Of the Rs 2076.56 crore investment, J&K is contributing only five percent. But the ownership of the line will eventually be transferred to the J&K government. While substantial Rs 1451.26 crore would go for purchasing equipment, the project has Rs 34.33 crore for compensating forests and private land and Rs 64.64 crore for raising required civil works. The project would require 40 acres for substations and another 78 acres for the transmission line. It includes 131.43 hectors of forest land. The project is expected to be ready by latter 2018.

Source

Indian T&D industry should tap global opportunities to increase exports: World Bank...

Domestic transmission and distribution companies need to tap global opportunities to increase exports from the current $ 5 billion to $ 25 billion in the next five years, a World Bank official said.

"Indian transmission and distribution industry should look for opportunities globally to enhance exports from $ 5 billion to $ 25 billion in the next five years in power generation, transmission and distribution," World Bank Director (Department of Sustainable Energy) Subramaniam V Iyer said.

Speaking at an event organised by the Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers' Association here, Iyer said this growth potential should be seen with the perspective of the huge untapped demand for power.

"Globally 1.2 billion people still do not get power, and India occupies a prime place as around 300 million people are not getting any power. So one can understand the need for the resources and efforts to reach out to the deprived lot."

According to the International Energy Agency, demand for energy is going to grow exponentially but the transmission and distribution losses will also grow in a big way unless the T&D equipment makers improve their efficiency.

"There was a concern about the climate change, and reduction of carbon footprint should be a major focus area for the generation and transmission equipment makers," Iyer added.

IEEMA President Raj Eswaran said frugal engineering and innovation help cope with business cycles in the global electricity sector, and manufacturers should embrace upcoming technologies.

Source

Alstom displays its new T155·4ZO kV Gas-Insulated Substation: compact and smart grid ready...

Alstom Grid, a global leader in power transmission and smart grid technology, showcases a number of technologies and innovations at the ELECRAMA 2014 - one of the largest trade shows for electrical and electronics industry in Asia. The industry has a lead role to play in driving India's economy at 9% GDP speed - if not more. In terms of technologies, we all are ready for that great day and the journey to get there is not such a long one. This forum will enable us to embrace the debate and lead us all to achieve a common goal of getting the energy infrastructure ready for India's next chapter. "

Alstom Grid displayed a wide spectrum of products, systems and services that improve energy efficiency and productivity at every stage of the energy chain - from generation to end use. In addition to its strong portfolio of automation technologies, Alstom Grid also showcased its latest generation of T1SS gas-insulated substation (GIS) designed to meet the future challenges of electrical networks up to 420 kV, 63 kA, S000/6300A.

The T155 substation is 40% more compact than its previous version with a reduced footprint, and is easier to access at ground level, easier to transport and 30% faster to erect. The reduced size is mainly due to the single-chamber circuit-breaker that requires less energy to operate. The bays are manufactured, assembled and tested in Alstom Grid's Chennai factory, which employs around 400 people.

With this product, Alstom sets the world benchmark in digital substations. Embedded digital monitoring and control functions communicate via the IEC 61850 protocol, making the solution fully digital with all the following benefits: interoperability, ease of configuration, reliability, availability, real-time operation and enhanced communication capabilities.

Source: NSE

L&T wins Saudi Aramco contract for transmission lines and related system development...

India granted Pakistan the MFN status in 1996.

India’s Central Electricity Authority and Power Grid Corporation of India will be the nodal technical agencies. Pakistan will have the National Transmission and Despatch Company and Chief Engineering Advisor as its nodal agencies.

Officials said there was a broad agreement that cross border trading would be done through HVDC (high voltage direct current) coupling, as is being done with Bangladesh, ensuring that both the grids operate independently.

As Lahore is near Punjab, it will be economical to transfer power through Amritsar, officials said.

The project will require 45 kilometres of 220 kV transmission lines on both sides of the border — 25 kilometres in India and 20 kilometres in the neighbouring country.

The tariff is likely to be around Rs 8 per unit, which is almost similar to the rates in Pakistan, sources said.

Pakistan faces a 37 per cent, or 5,000MW, energy shortage and is desperately looking for ways to bridge the huge shortfall. Power shortages, along with endemic violence, have resulted in its textile mills moving to Bangladesh.

At present, Islamabad imports 35MW from Iran, which it plans to increase to 100MW. It is also considering importing another 1,000MW from Tajikistan.

Power production in Pakistan is only about 10,000-16,000MW against an installed capacity of 20,800MW. The sector is plagued by old plants, poor maintenance and high debt.

Source\

With national grid, South to have access to 1,500MW additional power...

Providing succour for the power starved South, the region is expected to have access to additional electricity flow of about 1,500 MW once the all India national power grid becomes fully operational.

In a major step, the Southern power grid was synchronised with the rest of the national grid on December 31, 2013, and it is expected to be fully operational in a few months.

A government official said that once the new grid is fully operational, it would be able to carry an additional of about 1,500 MW electricity to Southern region.

In the absence of grid connectivity, Southern region was unable to utilise excess power available in other regions.

South witnessed peak power deficit of 6.8 per cent in November last year, the highest among the regions, according to latest official data.

Peak power deficit refers to shortage of electricity when demand is at the maximum.

During November last, while Southern region's electricity demand touched 34,118 MW, the availability was only around 31,786 MW.

Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Lakshwadeep make up the Southern region, as per power sector's planning body Central Electricity Authority (CEA).

The country's power system is operating through five regional grids. Till December 31, the Northern, Eastern, Western and North-eastern regions' grids were connected synchronously while Southern grid was connected through HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) links.

"Synchronous integration of Southern grid with rest of the national power grid shall not only augment the inter- regional power transfer capacity of Southern region but also relieve the congestion being experienced in few transmission corridors," the Power Ministry had said on January 1.

"This will be a great boost for further economic growth of the country. It is likely to take a few months before power flow over this line is stabilised," it had said.

Out of the country's total installed generation capacity of 2,32,164 MW, Southern region accounted for 57,529 MW at the end of November 2013.

Source
