Since I’ve been testing the content network and doing some research about it, it became pretty clear I was doing it wrong. I’ve tested a campaign with 100 adgroups which had 5000 longtail keywords in it. Result: a few impressions. After some digging through the forums and blogs it became clear to me that the content network is a whole different ballgame than the search network. But after you know what the deal is on the content network, it begins to make sense a bit.

The content network is all about themes. Forget about the search network and its keywords for a while. On the content network you need to think on a theme level. For example: You want to start a campaign targetting the theme “widgets” (yep, the good old widgets). So you make the overall theme of the campaign “widgets”. Now you want to make some adgroups like “blue widgets”, “green widgets”, etc. with keywords related to those adgroup themes. The recommendation from Google is to also put in the general keyword “widgets” in every adgroup to give the campaign a “widgets”-theme. (You’ve noticed now that duplicate keywords are allowed in the content network).

Some points to consider are:

Use max 50 keywords per adgroup

Too long tail sucks

Create a theme for your adgroups

You bid on adgroup level, so actually you are bidding on the theme, not the keywords

You can use duplicate keywords

Creating a theme for an adgroup can still be difficult

Other things to consider are:

I haven’t made a profitable campaign yet, so why listen to me

I might be lying and make tons of money and just trying to get you off track

I am drunk at moment of writing

After dropping the question in the forums I figured out that probably the domain was slapped by Google. Why the domain was slapped? I actually don’t know. I will try the campaigns on a new domain and try to figure out what was wrong with the other one. Hopefully I will find it out soon.

Two days ago I launched 10 campaigns on the Google content network. I started of running some polls, targetted to the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. I first want to make some profitable campaigns running on the content network before I go any further. The offers I’m running are offers from Neverblue and Copeac. They are ZIP and email submit offers. Let’s take a look at the Noob stats so far:

2008-10-15

Google Adwords Content Network

NeverBlue Stats

Copeac Stats

Results 2008-10-15:

Costs: $9,36
Commissions: $5,95
Earnings: -$3,41

2008-10-16

Google Adwords Content Network

NeverBlue Stats

Copeac Stats

Results 2008-10-16:

Costs: $25,96
Commissions: $3,35
Earnings: -$22,61

Ok, I didn’t lost a fortune yet, but there are some things notable about these stats. The stats from Copeac are kind of disturbing with 83 clicks and only 2 leads. Are they scrubbing? Maybe. It does result in the fact that I’m taking down the Copeac offers at first and test more NeverBlue offers.

Other reasons for the noob stats are:

I suck at adcopy

I suck at choosing the right offers

I suck at choosing the right keywords

I generally suck at pay per click

So far no ballin’ to the bank for the Noob. Well, we’ll see if I can tame this beast in the next couple of days or weeks.

Welcome to the renewed blog of PPC Noob! In this blog I will track and discuss everything I learn about pay per click advertising. Maybe in time you will be able to get some good information about pay per click out of this blog. At first I will really need to educate myself in pay per click advertising and build many campaigns to see if there are some profitable ones among them.

The first step I have already made: getting approved for the CPA networks. The list of the CPA networks I’m approved at are NeverBlue, Copeac, MaxBounty, which is not much yet. I still need to call FluxAds, OurFreeStuff.net and ClickBooth. If anyone has any suggestions, I’m open for new networks!
